How beautiful are your sandaled feet, princess![a](A)
The curves of your thighs are like jewelry,
the handiwork of a master.
Your navel is a rounded bowl;
it never lacks mixed wine.
Your waist[b] is a mound of wheat
surrounded by lilies.
Your breasts are like two fawns,
twins of a gazelle.(B)
Your neck is like a tower of ivory,(C)
your eyes like pools in Heshbon
by the gate of Bath-rabbim.
Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon
looking toward Damascus.
Your head crowns you[c] like Mount Carmel,
the hair of your head like purple cloth—
a king could be held captive(D) in your tresses.
How beautiful you are and how pleasant,(E)
my love, with such delights!
Your stature is like a palm tree;
your breasts are clusters of fruit.
I said, “I will climb the palm tree
and take hold of its fruit.”(F)
May your breasts be like clusters of grapes,
and the fragrance of your breath like apricots.(G)
Your mouth[d] is like fine wine(H)

W flowing smoothly for my love,
gliding past my lips and teeth![e]
10 I belong to my love,
and his desire(I) is for me.(J)

11 Come, my love,
let’s go to the field;
let’s spend the night among the henna blossoms.[f]
12 Let’s go early to the vineyards;
let’s see if the vine has budded,
if the blossom has opened,
if the pomegranates are in bloom.(K)
There I will give you my love.
13 The mandrakes(L) give off a fragrance,
and at our doors is every delicacy—
new as well as old.
I have treasured them up for you, my love.
If only I could treat you like my brother,[g]
one who nursed at my mother’s breasts,
I would find you in public and kiss you,
and no one would scorn me.
I would lead you, I would take you,
to the house of my mother(M) who taught me.[h]
I would give you spiced wine to drink
from my pomegranate juice.
His left hand is under my head,
and his right arm embraces me.(N)
Young women of Jerusalem, I charge you:
do not stir up or awaken love
until the appropriate time.(O)

Y Who is this(P) coming up from the wilderness,
leaning on the one she loves?

W I awakened you under the apricot tree.(Q)
There your mother conceived you;
there she conceived and gave you birth.
Set me as a seal on your heart,
as a seal on your arm.(R)
For love is as strong as death;(S)
ardent love is as unrelenting as Sheol.
Love’s flames are fiery flames(T)
the fiercest of all.[i]
Mighty waters cannot extinguish love;
rivers cannot sweep it away.
If a man were to give all his wealth[j] for love,(U)
it would be utterly scorned.

B Our sister is young;
she has no breasts.(V)
What will we do for our sister
on the day she is spoken for?
If she is a wall,
we will build a silver parapet on it.
If she is a door,
we will enclose it with cedar planks.[k](W)

10 W I am[l] a wall
and my breasts like towers.
So in his eyes I have become
like one who finds peace.[m]

11 Solomon owned a vineyard in Baal-hamon.(X)
He leased the vineyard to tenants.(Y)
Each was to bring for his fruit
1,000 pieces of silver.(Z)
12 I have my own vineyard.[n](AA)
The 1,000 are for you, Solomon,
but 200 for those who guard its fruits.

13 M You[o] who dwell in the gardens—
companions(AB) are listening for your voice—
let me hear you!(AC)

14 W Hurry to me, my love,
and be like a gazelle
or a young stag
on the mountains of spices.(AD)

The vision(AE) concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah(AF) son of Amoz saw during the reigns[p][q] of Uzziah,(AG) Jotham,(AH) Ahaz,(AI) and Hezekiah,(AJ) kings of Judah.(AK)

Judah on Trial

Listen, heavens, and pay attention, earth,(AL)
for the Lord has spoken:
“I have raised children[r] and brought them up,
but they have rebelled against Me.(AM)
The ox knows its owner,
and the donkey its master’s feeding trough,
but Israel does not know;
My people do not understand.”(AN)

Oh sinful nation,
people weighed down with iniquity,(AO)
brood of evildoers,(AP)
depraved children![s]
They have abandoned(AQ) the Lord;
they have despised(AR) the Holy One of Israel;(AS)
they have turned their backs on Him.

Why do you want more beatings?
Why do you keep on rebelling?
The whole head is hurt,
and the whole heart is sick.
From the sole of the foot even to the head,(AT)
no spot is uninjured(AU)
wounds, welts, and festering sores
not cleansed, bandaged,
or soothed with oil.

Your land is desolate,
your cities burned with fire;(AV)
foreigners devour your fields
before your very eyes—
a desolation demolished by foreigners.
Daughter Zion(AW) is abandoned
like a shelter in a vineyard,
like a shack in a cucumber field,
like a besieged city.
If the Lord of Hosts(AX)
had not left us a few survivors,(AY)
we would be like Sodom,
we would resemble Gomorrah.(AZ)

10 Hear the word of the Lord,(BA)
you rulers of Sodom!
Listen to the instruction of our God,
you people of Gomorrah!(BB)
11 “What are all your sacrifices to Me?”
asks the Lord.
“I have had enough of burnt offerings and rams
and the fat of well-fed cattle;
I have no desire for the blood of bulls,
lambs, or male goats.(BC)
12 When you come to appear before Me,
who requires this from you—
this trampling of My courts?
13 Stop bringing useless offerings.(BD)
Your incense is detestable to Me.
New Moons and Sabbaths,(BE)
and the calling of solemn assemblies(BF)
I cannot stand iniquity(BG) with a festival.
14 I hate your New Moons and prescribed festivals.
They have become a burden to Me;
I am tired of putting up with them.
15 When you lift up your hands in prayer,(BH)
I will refuse to look at you;
even if you offer countless prayers,
I will not listen.(BI)
Your hands are covered with blood.(BJ)

Purification of Jerusalem

16 “Wash yourselves. Cleanse yourselves.(BK)
Remove your evil deeds from My sight.
Stop doing evil.(BL)
17 Learn to do what is good.
Seek justice.(BM)
Correct the oppressor.[t]
Defend the rights of the fatherless.
Plead the widow’s cause.

18 “Come, let us discuss this,”(BN)
says the Lord.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
they will be as white as snow;(BO)
though they are as red as crimson,
they will be like wool.
19 If you are willing and obedient,
you will eat the good things of the land.(BP)
20 But if you refuse and rebel,
you will be devoured by the sword.”(BQ)
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.(BR)

21 The faithful city—
what an adulteress[u] she has become!
She was once full of justice.
Righteousness once dwelt in her—
but now, murderers!
22 Your silver has become dross,[v]
your beer[w] is diluted with water.
23 Your rulers are rebels,
friends of thieves.(BS)
They all love graft
and chase after bribes.(BT)
They do not defend the rights of the fatherless,
and the widow’s case never comes before them.(BU)

24 Therefore the Lord God of Hosts,
the Mighty One of Israel, declares:
“Ah, I will gain satisfaction from My foes;
I will take revenge against My enemies.(BV)
25 I will turn My hand against you(BW)
and will burn away your dross[x] completely;[y]
I will remove all your impurities.(BX)
26 I will restore your judges(BY) to what they once were,[z]
and your advisers to their former state.[aa]
Afterward you will be called the Righteous City,(BZ)
a Faithful City.”

27 Zion will be redeemed by justice,
her repentant ones by righteousness.(CA)
28 But both rebels and sinners will be destroyed,
and those who abandon the Lord will perish.
29 Indeed, they[ab] will be ashamed of the sacred trees
you desired,(CB)
and you will be embarrassed because of the gardens
you have chosen.(CC)
30 For you will become like an oak
whose leaves are withered,
and like a garden without water.(CD)
31 The strong one will become tinder,
and his work a spark;
both will burn together,(CE)
with no one to quench the flames.(CF)
