Admiration by the Groom

[a]How beautiful are your feet in sandals,
[b](A)Prince’s daughter!
The curves of your hips are like jewels,
The work of the hands of an artist.
Your navel is like a round goblet
That never lacks mixed wine;
Your belly is like a heap of wheat,
[c]Surrounded with lilies.
Your (B)two breasts are like two fawns,
Twins of a gazelle.
Your (C)neck is like a tower of ivory,
Your eyes like the pools in (D)Heshbon
By the gate of Bath-rabbim;
Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon,
Which looks toward Damascus.
Your head [d]crowns you like (E)Carmel,
And the flowing hair of your head is like purple threads;
The king is captivated by your tresses.
How (F)beautiful and how delightful you are,
[e]My love, with all your delights!
[f]Your stature is like a palm tree,
And your breasts are like its clusters.
I said, ‘I will climb the palm tree,
I will grasp its fruit stalks.’
Oh, may your breasts be like clusters of the vine,
And the fragrance of your [g]breath like (G)apples,
And your [h](H)mouth like the best wine!”

The Bride

“It (I)goes down smoothly for my beloved,
Flowing gently through the lips of those who are asleep.

The Union of Love

10 (J)I am my beloved’s,
And his (K)desire is for me.
11 Come, my beloved, let’s go out to the [i]country,
Let’s spend the night in the villages.
12 Let’s rise early and go to the vineyards;
Let’s (L)see whether the vine has grown
And its buds have opened,
And whether the pomegranates have bloomed.
There I will give you my love.
13 The (M)mandrakes have given forth fragrance;
And over our doors are all (N)delicious fruits,
New as well as old,
Which I have saved for you, my beloved.

The Lovers Speak

“Oh that you were like a brother to me
Who nursed at my mother’s breasts.
If I found you outdoors, I would kiss you;
No one would despise me, either.
I would lead you and (O)bring you
Into the house of my mother, who used to instruct me;
I would give you spiced wine to drink from the juice of my pomegranates.
Let (P)his left hand be under my head,
And his right hand embrace me.”

The Groom

(Q)Swear to me, you daughters of Jerusalem:
[j]Do not disturb or awaken my love
Until she pleases.”

The Chorus

(R)Who is this coming up from the wilderness,
Leaning on her beloved?”

The Bride

“Beneath the (S)apple tree I awakened you;
There your mother went into labor with you,
There she was in labor and gave birth to you.
Put me like a seal over your heart,
Like a (T)seal on your arm.
For love is as strong as death,
[k](U)Jealousy is as severe as Sheol;
Its flames are flames of fire,
[l]The flame of the Lord.
Many waters cannot quench love,
Nor will rivers flood over it;
(V)If a man were to give all the riches of his house for love,
It would be utterly despised.”

The Chorus

“We have a little sister,
And she (W)has no breasts;
What shall we do for our sister
On the day when she is spoken for?
If she is a wall,
We will build on her a battlement of silver;
But if she is a door,
We will barricade her with (X)planks of cedar.”

The Bride

10 “I was a wall, and (Y)my breasts were like towers;
Then I became in his eyes as one who finds peace.
11 Solomon had a (Z)vineyard at Baal-hamon;
He (AA)entrusted the vineyard to (AB)caretakers.
Each one was to bring a (AC)thousand shekels of silver for its (AD)fruit.
12 My very own vineyard is [m]at my disposal;
The thousand shekels are for you, Solomon,
And two hundred are for those who take care of its fruit.”

The Groom

13 “You who sit in the gardens:
My (AE)companions are listening for your voice—
(AF)Let me hear it!”

The Bride

14 [n]Hurry, my beloved,
And be (AG)like a gazelle or a young [o]stag
On the (AH)mountains of balsam trees!”

Rebellion of God’s People

The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz concerning (AI)Judah and Jerusalem, which he saw during the [p]reigns of (AJ)Uzziah, (AK)Jotham, (AL)Ahaz, and (AM)Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

(AN)Listen, heavens, and hear, (AO)earth;
For the Lord has spoken:
(AP)Sons I have raised and brought up,
But they have (AQ)revolted against Me.
An ox knows its owner,
And a donkey its master’s manger,
But Israel (AR)does not know,
My people (AS)do not understand.”

Oh, sinful nation,
People weighed down with guilt,
[q](AT)Offspring of evildoers,
Sons who (AU)act corruptly!
They have (AV)abandoned the Lord,
They have (AW)despised the Holy One of Israel,
They have turned away [r]from Him.

Where will you be stricken again,
As you (AX)continue in your rebellion?
The entire head is (AY)sick
And the entire heart is faint.
(AZ)From the sole of the foot even to the head
There is (BA)nothing healthy in it,
Only bruises, slashes, and raw wounds;
(BB)Not pressed out nor bandaged,
Nor softened with oil.

Your (BC)land is desolate,
Your cities are burned with fire;
As for your fields, strangers are devouring them in front of you;
It is desolation, as overthrown by strangers.
The daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard,
Like a watchman’s hut in a cucumber field, like a city under watch.
(BD)If the Lord of armies
Had not left us a few (BE)survivors,
We would be like (BF)Sodom,
We would be like Gomorrah.

God Has Had Enough

10 Hear (BG)the word of the Lord,
You rulers of (BH)Sodom;
Listen to the instruction of our God,
You people of Gomorrah!
11 (BI)What are your many sacrifices to Me?”
Says the Lord.
“I [s]have had enough of burnt offerings of rams
And the fat of fattened cattle;
And I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs, or goats.
12 When you come (BJ)to appear before Me,
Who requires [t]of you this trampling of My courtyards?
13 Do not go on bringing your worthless offerings,
(BK)Incense is an abomination to Me.
(BL)New moon and Sabbath, the (BM)proclamation of an assembly—
I cannot (BN)endure wrongdoing and the festive assembly.
14 [u]I hate your new moon festivals and your (BO)appointed feasts,
They have become a burden to Me;
I am (BP)tired of bearing them.
15 So when you (BQ)spread out your hands in prayer,
(BR)I will hide My eyes from you;
Yes, even though you (BS)offer many prayers,
I will not be listening.
(BT)Your hands are [v]covered with blood.

16 (BU)Wash yourselves, (BV)make yourselves clean;
(BW)Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight.
(BX)Stop doing evil,
17 Learn to do good;
(BY)Seek justice,
Rebuke the oppressor,
(BZ)Obtain justice for the orphan,
Plead for the widow’s case.

Invitation to Debate

18 “Come now, and (CA)let us [w]debate your case,”
Says the Lord,
(CB)Though your sins are as scarlet,
They shall become as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They shall be like wool.
19 (CC)If you are willing and obedient,
You will (CD)eat the best of the land;
20 But if you refuse and rebel,
You will be (CE)devoured by the sword.”
For (CF)the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

Zion Corrupted; Will Be Redeemed

21 How the faithful city has become a (CG)prostitute,
She who was full of justice!
Righteousness once dwelt in her,
But now murderers.
22 Your silver has become [x]waste matter,
Your drink diluted with water.
23 Your (CH)rulers are rebels
And companions of thieves;
Everyone (CI)loves a bribe
And chases after gifts.
They (CJ)do not obtain justice for the [y]orphan,
Nor does the widow’s case come before them.

24 Therefore the Lord [z]God of armies,
The (CK)Mighty One of Israel, declares,
“Ah, I will have satisfaction against My adversaries,
And (CL)avenge Myself on My enemies.
25 I will also turn My hand against you,
And (CM)smelt away your impurities as with lye;
And I will remove all your slag.
26 Then I will restore your (CN)judges as at first,
And your counselors as at the beginning;
After that you will be called the (CO)city of righteousness,
A faithful city.”

27 Zion will be (CP)redeemed with justice
And her [aa]repentant ones with righteousness.
28 But [ab]wrongdoers and sinners together will be (CQ)broken,
And those who abandon the Lord will come to an end.
29 [ac]You certainly will be ashamed of the [ad](CR)oaks which you have desired,
And you will be embarrassed by the (CS)gardens which you have chosen.
30 For you will be like an [ae]oak whose (CT)leaf withers away,
Or like a garden that has no water.
31 The strong man will become like [af]flax fiber,
And his work a spark.
So they shall both (CU)burn together
And there will be (CV)no one to extinguish them.
