Inleiding
1 De wijze spreuken van Salomo, de zoon van David, de koning van Israël. 2+3 Hij schreef deze spreuken op om andere mensen wijsheid te leren. Hij wilde hen daarmee opvoeden tot verstandige mensen. 4 Zijn spreuken leren de mensen wat rechtvaardig en eerlijk is. Onverstandige mensen kunnen er verstandig van worden. Jonge mensen kunnen er kennis en wijsheid uit leren. 5 Wijze mensen kunnen er nog wijzer van worden, en verstandige mensen nog verstandiger. 6 Zij zullen deze spreuken en wijsheden van wijze mensen en raadgevers begrijpen.
7 Maar alle wijsheid begint bij een diep ontzag voor de Heer. Wie geen ontzag heeft voor God, wil niets van wijsheid weten.
Pas op voor slecht gezelschap
8 Mijn zoon, luister naar de goede raad van je ouders.
Doe iets met hun wijze lessen.
9 Ze zijn een sieraad voor je,
zoals een kroon op je hoofd,
of een ketting om je hals.
10 Mijn zoon, als slechte mensen tegen je zeggen:
"Doe met ons mee!"
laat je dan niet door hen overhalen.
11 Als ze tegen je zeggen:
"Kom mee, we gaan iemand vermoorden.
We overvallen hem en doden hem.
Nee, hij heeft ons helemaal niets gedaan.
12 Maar we gaan hem vermoorden.
We jagen hem de dood in.
13 Want we zullen bij hem een rijke buit kunnen halen.
We kunnen er onze huizen mee vullen!
14 We zullen alles eerlijk verdelen.
Jij krijgt je eigen deel."
15 Mijn zoon, doe dan niet met hen mee.
Ga niet met hen het slechte pad op.
16 Want ze willen graag kwaad doen.
Ze houden ervan om te moorden.
17 Het spreekwoord zegt:
"Een vogel die het vangnet ziet hangen,
laat zich echt niet zomaar vangen."
18 Maar zij zien het vangnet niet.
Ze zien niet dat ze uiteindelijk zelf in de val zullen lopen.
Ze zien niet dat het hun uiteindelijk het leven zal kosten.
19 Als mensen op rijkdom loeren,
wordt dat uiteindelijk hun dood.
De Wijsheid roept op tot wijsheid
20 De Wijsheid roept luid op de straat.
Op de pleinen is haar stem te horen.
21 Daar waar het druk is, roept zij.
Ze roept bij de poorten van de stad:
22 "Schurken, hoelang zullen jullie van het kwaad blijven houden?
Spotters, hoelang blijven jullie God nog belachelijk maken?
Dwazen, hoelang zullen jullie een hekel aan wijsheid blijven hebben?
23 Luister naar mijn woorden!
Ik wil mijn wijsheid over jullie uitstorten.
Ik wil jullie vertellen wat ik weet.
24 Maar toen ik jullie riep, wilden jullie niet naar me luisteren.
Ik wilde jullie helpen, maar jullie wilden niet geholpen worden.
25 Jullie wilden niet luisteren naar mijn goede raad.
Jullie wilden niets doen met mijn waarschuwingen.
26 Daarom zal ik om jullie lachen als het slecht met jullie afloopt.
Ik zal jullie uitlachen als jullie door rampen worden getroffen.
27 Want die rampen zullen aankomen als een storm.
Jullie ondergang komt zo snel op jullie af als een wervelwind.
Dan zullen jullie door angst overvallen worden.
28 Pas als jullie in de ellende zitten, zullen jullie mij roepen.
Maar dan zal ik niet antwoorden.
Jullie zullen me zoeken, maar me niet vinden.
29 Want jullie hebben nooit verstandig willen zijn.
Jullie hebben nooit ontzag voor God willen hebben.
30 Jullie hebben niet naar mijn goede raad geluisterd.
Jullie hebben niets met mijn waarschuwingen gedaan.
31 Daarom zullen jullie de gevolgen dragen van jullie manier van leven.
Jullie zullen de gevolgen dragen van jullie gedrag!
32 Want doordat jullie niet naar goede raad wilden luisteren,
zullen jullie worden gedood.
Door jullie eigen zorgeloosheid zal het slecht met jullie aflopen.
33 Maar de mensen die naar mij luisteren, zullen in vrede kunnen leven.
Er zullen hun geen rampen overkomen."

New Living Translation
The Purpose of Proverbs
1 These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel.
2 Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline,
to help them understand the insights of the wise.
3 Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives,
to help them do what is right, just, and fair.
4 These proverbs will give insight to the simple,
knowledge and discernment to the young.
5 Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser.
Let those with understanding receive guidance
6 by exploring the meaning in these proverbs and parables,
the words of the wise and their riddles.
7 Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
A Father’s Exhortation: Acquire Wisdom
8 My child,[a] listen when your father corrects you.
Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.
9 What you learn from them will crown you with grace
and be a chain of honor around your neck.
10 My child, if sinners entice you,
turn your back on them!
11 They may say, “Come and join us.
Let’s hide and kill someone!
Just for fun, let’s ambush the innocent!
12 Let’s swallow them alive, like the grave[b];
let’s swallow them whole, like those who go down to the pit of death.
13 Think of the great things we’ll get!
We’ll fill our houses with all the stuff we take.
14 Come, throw in your lot with us;
we’ll all share the loot.”
15 My child, don’t go along with them!
Stay far away from their paths.
16 They rush to commit evil deeds.
They hurry to commit murder.
17 If a bird sees a trap being set,
it knows to stay away.
18 But these people set an ambush for themselves;
they are trying to get themselves killed.
19 Such is the fate of all who are greedy for money;
it robs them of life.
Wisdom Shouts in the Streets
20 Wisdom shouts in the streets.
She cries out in the public square.
21 She calls to the crowds along the main street,
to those gathered in front of the city gate:
22 “How long, you simpletons,
will you insist on being simpleminded?
How long will you mockers relish your mocking?
How long will you fools hate knowledge?
23 Come and listen to my counsel.
I’ll share my heart with you
and make you wise.
24 “I called you so often, but you wouldn’t come.
I reached out to you, but you paid no attention.
25 You ignored my advice
and rejected the correction I offered.
26 So I will laugh when you are in trouble!
I will mock you when disaster overtakes you—
27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
when disaster engulfs you like a cyclone,
and anguish and distress overwhelm you.
28 “When they cry for help, I will not answer.
Though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me.
29 For they hated knowledge
and chose not to fear the Lord.
30 They rejected my advice
and paid no attention when I corrected them.
31 Therefore, they must eat the bitter fruit of living their own way,
choking on their own schemes.
32 For simpletons turn away from me—to death.
Fools are destroyed by their own complacency.
33 But all who listen to me will live in peace,
untroubled by fear of harm.”
