Job 42 - Psalm 24

Job’s Confession

42 Then Job answered the Lord and said,

“I know that (A)You can do all things,
And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.
‘Who is this that (B)hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand,
Things (C)too wonderful for me, which I did not know.”
‘Hear, now, and I will speak;
I will (D)ask You, and You instruct me.’
“I have (E)heard of You by the hearing of the ear;
But now my (F)eye sees You;
Therefore I retract,
And I repent in dust and ashes.”

God Displeased with Job’s Friends

It came about after the Lord had spoken these words to Job, that the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you and against your two friends, because you have not spoken of Me what is right (G)as My servant Job has. Now therefore, take for yourselves (H)seven bulls and seven rams, and go to My servant Job, and offer up a (I)burnt offering for yourselves, and My servant Job will (J)pray for you. (K)For I will [a]accept him so that I may not do with you according to your folly, because you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.” So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the Lord told them; and the Lord [b]accepted Job.

God Restores Job’s Fortunes

10 The Lord (L)restored the fortunes of Job when he prayed for his friends, and the Lord increased all that Job had twofold. 11 Then all his (M)brothers and all his sisters and all who had known him before came to him, and they ate bread with him in his house; and they (N)consoled him and comforted him for all the adversities that the Lord had brought on him. And each one gave him one [c]piece of money, and each a ring of gold. 12 (O)The Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; (P)and he had 14,000 sheep and 6,000 camels and 1,000 yoke of oxen and 1,000 female donkeys. 13 (Q)He had seven sons and three daughters. 14 He named the first Jemimah, and the second Keziah, and the third Keren-happuch. 15 In all the land no women were found so fair as Job’s daughters; and their father gave them inheritance among their brothers. 16 After this, Job lived 140 years, and saw his sons and his grandsons, four generations. 17 (R)And Job died, an old man and full of days.

BOOK 1

The Righteous and the Wicked Contrasted.

How blessed is the man who (S)does not walk in the (T)counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the [d](U)path of sinners,
Nor (V)sit in the seat of scoffers!
But his (W)delight is (X)in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates (Y)day and (Z)night.
He will be like (AA)a tree firmly planted by [e]streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season
And its [f]leaf does not wither;
And [g]in whatever he does, (AB)he prospers.

The wicked are not so,
But they are like (AC)chaff which the wind drives away.
Therefore (AD)the wicked will not stand in the (AE)judgment,
Nor sinners in (AF)the assembly of the righteous.
For the Lord [h](AG)knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of (AH)the wicked will perish.

The Reign of the Lord’s Anointed.

Why are (AI)the [i]nations in an uproar
And the peoples (AJ)devising a vain thing?
The (AK)kings of the earth take their stand
And the rulers take counsel together
(AL)Against the Lord and against His [j](AM)Anointed, saying,
“Let us (AN)tear their fetters apart
And cast away their cords from us!”

He who [k]sits in the heavens (AO)laughs,
The Lord (AP)scoffs at them.
Then He will speak to them in His (AQ)anger
And (AR)terrify them in His fury, saying,
“But as for Me, I have [l]installed (AS)My King
Upon Zion, (AT)My holy mountain.”

“I will surely tell of the [m]decree of the Lord:
He said to Me, ‘You are (AU)My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
‘Ask of Me, and (AV)I will surely give (AW)the [n]nations as Your inheritance,
And the very (AX)ends of the earth as Your possession.
‘You shall [o](AY)break them with a [p]rod of iron,
You shall (AZ)shatter them like [q]earthenware.’”

10 Now therefore, O kings, (BA)show discernment;
Take warning, O [r]judges of the earth.
11 [s]Worship the Lord with [t](BB)reverence
And rejoice with (BC)trembling.
12 [u]Do homage to (BD)the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way,
For (BE)His wrath may [v]soon be kindled.
How blessed are all who (BF)take refuge in Him!

Morning Prayer of Trust in God.

A Psalm of David, when [w]he fled from Absalom his son.

O Lord, how (BG)my adversaries have increased!
Many are rising up against me.
Many are saying [x]of my soul,
“There is no [y](BH)deliverance for him in God.” [z]Selah.

But You, O Lord, are (BI)a shield about me,
My (BJ)glory, and the One who (BK)lifts my head.
I was crying to the Lord with my voice,
And He (BL)answered me from (BM)His holy [aa]mountain. Selah.
[ab]I (BN)lay down and slept;
I awoke, for the Lord sustains me.
I will (BO)not be afraid of ten thousands of people
Who have (BP)set themselves against me round about.

(BQ)Arise, O Lord; (BR)save me, O my God!
For You [ac]have (BS)smitten all my enemies on the [ad]cheek;
You [ae]have (BT)shattered the teeth of the wicked.
[af](BU)Salvation belongs to the Lord;
Your (BV)blessing [ag]be upon Your people! Selah.

Evening Prayer of Trust in God.

[ah]For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.

(BW)Answer me when (BX)I call, O God [ai]of my righteousness!
You have [aj](BY)relieved me in my distress;
Be (BZ)gracious to me and (CA)hear my prayer.

O sons of men, how long will (CB)my [ak]honor become (CC)a reproach?
How long will you love (CD)what is worthless and aim at (CE)deception? [al]Selah.
But know that the Lord has [am](CF)set apart the (CG)godly man for Himself;
The Lord (CH)hears when I call to Him.

[an](CI)Tremble, [ao](CJ)and do not sin;
[ap](CK)Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.
Offer [aq]the (CL)sacrifices of righteousness,
And (CM)trust in the Lord.

Many are saying, “(CN)Who will show us any good?”
(CO)Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O Lord!
You have put (CP)gladness in my heart,
More than when their grain and new wine abound.
In peace I will [ar]both (CQ)lie down and sleep,
For You alone, O Lord, make me to (CR)dwell in safety.

Prayer for Protection from the Wicked.

For the choir director; for [as]flute accompaniment. A Psalm of David.

(CS)Give ear to my words, O Lord,
Consider my [at](CT)groaning.
Heed (CU)the sound of my cry for help, (CV)my King and my God,
For to You I pray.
In the morning, O Lord, [au]You will hear my voice;
In the (CW)morning I will order my [av]prayer to You and eagerly (CX)watch.

For You are not a God (CY)who takes pleasure in wickedness;
(CZ)No evil [aw]dwells with You.
The (DA)boastful shall not (DB)stand before Your eyes;
You (DC)hate all who do iniquity.
You (DD)destroy those who speak falsehood;
The Lord abhors (DE)the man of bloodshed and deceit.
But as for me, (DF)by Your abundant lovingkindness I will enter Your house,
[ax]At Your holy temple I will (DG)bow in (DH)reverence for You.

O Lord, (DI)lead me (DJ)in Your righteousness (DK)because of [ay]my foes;
Make Your way [az]straight before me.
There is (DL)nothing [ba]reliable in [bb]what they say;
Their (DM)inward part is destruction itself.
Their (DN)throat is an open grave;
They [bc]flatter with their tongue.
10 Hold them guilty, O God;
(DO)By their own devices let them fall!
In the multitude of their transgressions (DP)thrust them out,
For they are (DQ)rebellious against You.

11 But let all who (DR)take refuge in You (DS)be glad,
Let them ever sing for joy;
And [bd]may You (DT)shelter them,
That those who (DU)love Your name may exult in You.
12 For it is You who (DV)blesses the righteous man, O Lord,
You (DW)surround him with favor as with a shield.

Prayer for Mercy in Time of Trouble.

For the choir director; with stringed instruments, [be]upon an eight-string lyre. A Psalm of David.

O Lord, (DX)do not rebuke me in Your anger,
Nor chasten me in Your wrath.
Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am (DY)pining away;
(DZ)Heal me, O Lord, for (EA)my bones are dismayed.
And my (EB)soul is greatly dismayed;
But You, O Lord(EC)how long?

Return, O Lord, (ED)rescue my [bf]soul;
Save me because of Your lovingkindness.
For (EE)there is no [bg]mention of You in death;
In [bh]Sheol who will give You thanks?

I am (EF)weary with my sighing;
Every night I make my bed swim,
I dissolve my couch with (EG)my tears.
My (EH)eye has wasted away with grief;
It has become old because of all my adversaries.

(EI)Depart from me, all you who do iniquity,
For the Lord (EJ)has heard the voice of my weeping.
The Lord (EK)has heard my supplication,
The Lord (EL)receives my prayer.
10 All my enemies will (EM)be ashamed and greatly dismayed;
They shall [bi]turn back, they will (EN)suddenly be ashamed.

The Lord Implored to Defend the Psalmist against the Wicked.

A [bj]Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the Lord [bk]concerning Cush, a Benjamite.

O Lord my God, (EO)in You I have taken refuge;
Save me from all those who pursue me, and (EP)deliver me,
Or he will tear [bl]my soul (EQ)like a lion,
[bm]Dragging me away, while there is none to deliver.

O Lord my God, if I have done this,
If there is (ER)injustice in my hands,
If I have (ES)rewarded evil to [bn]my friend,
Or have (ET)plundered [bo]him who without cause was my adversary,
Let the enemy pursue [bp]my soul and overtake [bq]it;
And let him trample my life down to the ground
And lay my glory in the dust. [br]Selah.

(EU)Arise, O Lord, in Your anger;
(EV)Lift up Yourself against (EW)the rage of my adversaries,
And (EX)arouse Yourself [bs]for me; You have appointed judgment.
Let the assembly of the (EY)peoples encompass You,
And over [bt]them return on high.
The Lord (EZ)judges the peoples;
[bu](FA)Vindicate me, O Lord, according to my righteousness and my integrity that is in me.
O let (FB)the evil of the wicked come to an end, but (FC)establish the righteous;
For the righteous God (FD)tries the hearts and [bv]minds.
10 My (FE)shield is [bw]with God,
Who (FF)saves the upright in heart.
11 God is a (FG)righteous judge,
And a God who has (FH)indignation every day.

12 If [bx]a man (FI)does not repent, He will (FJ)sharpen His sword;
He has (FK)bent His bow and [by]made it ready.
13 He has also prepared [bz]for Himself deadly weapons;
He makes His (FL)arrows fiery shafts.
14 Behold, he travails with wickedness,
And he (FM)conceives mischief and brings forth falsehood.
15 He has dug a pit and hollowed it out,
And has (FN)fallen into the hole which he made.
16 His (FO)mischief will return upon his own head,
And his (FP)violence will descend upon [ca]his own pate.

17 I will give thanks to the Lord (FQ)according to His righteousness
And will (FR)sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.

The Lord’s Glory and Man’s Dignity.

For the choir director; on the Gittith. A Psalm of David.

O Lord, our Lord,
How majestic is Your name in all the earth,
Who have [cb](FS)displayed Your splendor above the heavens!
(FT)From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established [cc](FU)strength
Because of Your adversaries,
To make (FV)the enemy and the revengeful cease.

When I [cd](FW)consider (FX)Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The (FY)moon and the stars, which You have [ce]ordained;
(FZ)What is man that You [cf]take thought of him,
And the son of man that You care for him?
Yet You have made him a (GA)little lower than [cg]God,
And (GB)You crown him with (GC)glory and majesty!
You make him to (GD)rule over the works of Your hands;
You have (GE)put all things under his feet,
All sheep and oxen,
And also the [ch]beasts of the field,
The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea,
Whatever passes through the paths of the seas.

(GF)O Lord, our Lord,
How majestic is Your name in all the earth!

A Psalm of Thanksgiving for God’s Justice.

For the choir director; on [ci]Muth-labben. A Psalm of David.

I will give thanks to the Lord with all (GG)my heart;
I will (GH)tell of all Your [cj]wonders.
I will be glad and (GI)exult in You;
I will (GJ)sing praise to Your name, O (GK)Most High.

When my enemies turn back,
They stumble and (GL)perish before You.
For You have (GM)maintained [ck]my just cause;
You have sat on the throne [cl](GN)judging righteously.
You have (GO)rebuked the nations, You have destroyed the wicked;
You have (GP)blotted out their name forever and ever.
[cm]The enemy has come to an end in perpetual ruins,
And You have uprooted the cities;
The very (GQ)memory of them has perished.

But the (GR)Lord [cn]abides forever;
He has established His (GS)throne for judgment,
And He will (GT)judge the world in righteousness;
He will execute judgment for the peoples with equity.
[co]The Lord also will be a (GU)stronghold for the oppressed,
A stronghold in times of trouble;
10 And [cp]those who (GV)know Your name will put their trust in You,
For You, O Lord, have not (GW)forsaken those who seek You.

11 Sing praises to the Lord, who (GX)dwells in Zion;
(GY)Declare among the peoples His deeds.
12 For (GZ)He who [cq]requires blood remembers them;
He does not forget (HA)the cry of the afflicted.
13 Be gracious to me, O Lord;
See my affliction from those (HB)who hate me,
You who (HC)lift me up from the gates of death,
14 That I may tell of (HD)all Your praises,
That in the gates of the daughter of Zion
I may (HE)rejoice in Your [cr]salvation.
15 The nations have sunk down (HF)in the pit which they have made;
In the (HG)net which they hid, their own foot has been caught.
16 The Lord has (HH)made Himself known;
He has (HI)executed judgment.
In the work of his own hands the wicked is snared. [cs]Higgaion [ct]Selah.

17 The wicked will [cu](HJ)return to [cv]Sheol,
Even all the nations who (HK)forget God.
18 For the (HL)needy will not always be forgotten,
Nor the (HM)hope of the afflicted perish forever.
19 (HN)Arise, O Lord, do not let man prevail;
Let the nations be (HO)judged before You.
20 Put them (HP)in fear, O Lord;
Let the nations know that they are (HQ)but men. Selah.

A Prayer for the Overthrow of the Wicked.

10 Why (HR)do You stand afar off, O Lord?
Why (HS)do You hide [cw]Yourself in times of trouble?
In (HT)pride the wicked [cx]hotly pursue the afflicted;
[cy]Let them be (HU)caught in the plots which they have devised.

For the wicked (HV)boasts of his (HW)heart’s desire,
And [cz]the greedy man curses and (HX)spurns the Lord.
The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, (HY)does not seek Him.
All his [da]thoughts are, “(HZ)There is no God.”

His ways [db](IA)prosper at all times;
Your judgments are on high, (IB)out of his sight;
As for all his adversaries, he snorts at them.
He says to himself, “(IC)I will not be moved;
[dc]Throughout all generations (ID)I will not be in adversity.”
His (IE)mouth is full of curses and deceit and (IF)oppression;
(IG)Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness.
He sits in the (IH)lurking places of the villages;
In the hiding places he (II)kills the innocent;
His eyes [dd]stealthily watch for the [de](IJ)unfortunate.
He lurks in a hiding place as (IK)a lion in his [df]lair;
He (IL)lurks to catch (IM)the afflicted;
He catches the afflicted when he draws him into his (IN)net.
10 He [dg]crouches, he [dh]bows down,
And the [di]unfortunate fall [dj]by his mighty ones.
11 He (IO)says to himself, “God has forgotten;
He has hidden His face; He will never see it.”

12 Arise, O Lord; O God, (IP)lift up Your hand.
(IQ)Do not forget the afflicted.
13 Why has the wicked (IR)spurned God?
He has said to himself, “You will not require it.”
14 You have seen it, for You have beheld (IS)mischief and vexation to [dk]take it into Your hand.
The [dl](IT)unfortunate commits himself to You;
You have been the (IU)helper of the orphan.
15 (IV)Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer,
[dm](IW)Seek out his wickedness until You find none.

16 The Lord is (IX)King forever and ever;
(IY)Nations have perished from His land.
17 O Lord, You have heard the (IZ)desire of the [dn]humble;
You will (JA)strengthen their heart, (JB)You will incline Your ear
18 To [do]vindicate the (JC)orphan and the (JD)oppressed,
So that man who is of the earth will no longer cause (JE)terror.

The Lord a Refuge and Defense.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

11 In the Lord I (JF)take refuge;
How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your (JG)mountain;
For, behold, the wicked (JH)bend the bow,
They [dp](JI)make ready their arrow upon the string
To (JJ)shoot in darkness at the upright in heart.
If the (JK)foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?”

The Lord is in His (JL)holy temple; the [dq]Lord’s (JM)throne is in heaven;
His (JN)eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.
The Lord (JO)tests the righteous and (JP)the wicked,
And the one who loves violence His soul hates.
Upon the wicked He will (JQ)rain [dr]snares;
(JR)Fire and brimstone and (JS)burning wind will be the portion of (JT)their cup.
For the Lord is (JU)righteous, (JV)He loves [ds]righteousness;
The upright will (JW)behold His face.

God, a Helper against the Treacherous.

For the choir director; [dt]upon an eight-stringed lyre. A Psalm of David.

12 Help, Lord, for (JX)the godly man ceases to be,
For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.
They (JY)speak [du]falsehood to one another;
With (JZ)flattering [dv]lips and with a double heart they speak.
May the Lord cut off all flattering lips,
The tongue that (KA)speaks great things;
Who (KB)have said, “With our tongue we will prevail;
Our lips are [dw]our own; who is lord over us?”
“Because of the (KC)devastation of the afflicted, because of the groaning of the needy,
Now (KD)I will arise,” says the Lord; “I will (KE)set him in the safety for which he longs.”

The (KF)words of the Lord are pure words;
As silver (KG)tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.
You, O Lord, will keep them;
You will (KH)preserve him from this generation forever.
The (KI)wicked strut about on every side
When [dx](KJ)vileness is exalted among the sons of men.

Prayer for Help in Trouble.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

13 How long, O Lord? Will You (KK)forget me forever?
How long (KL)will You hide Your face from me?
How long shall I (KM)take counsel in my soul,
Having (KN)sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long will my enemy be exalted over me?

(KO)Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
(KP)Enlighten my eyes, or I will (KQ)sleep the sleep of death,
And my enemy will (KR)say, “I have overcome him,”
And (KS)my adversaries will rejoice when I am shaken.

But I have (KT)trusted in Your lovingkindness;
My heart shall (KU)rejoice in Your salvation.
I will (KV)sing to the Lord,
Because He has (KW)dealt bountifully with me.

Folly and Wickedness of Men.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

14 The fool has (KX)said in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, they have committed abominable [dy]deeds;
There is (KY)no one who does good.
The Lord has (KZ)looked down from heaven upon the sons of men
To see if there are any who [dz](LA)understand,
Who (LB)seek after God.
They have all (LC)turned aside, together they have become corrupt;
There is (LD)no one who does good, not even one.

Do all the workers of wickedness (LE)not know,
Who (LF)eat up my people as they eat bread,
And (LG)do not call upon the Lord?
There they are in great dread,
For God is with the (LH)righteous generation.
You would put to shame the counsel of the afflicted,
But the Lord is his (LI)refuge.

Oh, that (LJ)the salvation of Israel [ea]would come out of Zion!
When the Lord [eb](LK)restores His captive people,
Jacob will rejoice, Israel will be glad.

Description of a Citizen of Zion.

A Psalm of David.

15 O Lord, who may [ec]abide (LL)in Your tent?
Who may dwell on Your (LM)holy hill?
He who (LN)walks with integrity, and works righteousness,
And (LO)speaks truth in his heart.
He (LP)does not slander [ed]with his tongue,
Nor (LQ)does evil to his neighbor,
Nor (LR)takes up a reproach against his friend;
In [ee]whose eyes a reprobate is despised,
But [ef]who (LS)honors those who fear the Lord;
He (LT)swears to his own hurt and does not change;
He (LU)does not put out his money [eg]at interest,
Nor (LV)does he take a bribe against the innocent.
(LW)He who does these things will never be shaken.

The Lord the Psalmist’s Portion in Life and Deliverer in Death.

A [eh]Mikhtam of David.

16 (LX)Preserve me, O God, for (LY)I take refuge in You.
[ei]I said to the Lord, “You are [ej]my Lord;
I (LZ)have no good besides You.”
As for the [ek](MA)saints who are in the earth,
[el]They are the majestic ones (MB)in whom is all my delight.
The [em](MC)sorrows of those who have [en]bartered for another god will be multiplied;
I shall not pour out their drink offerings of (MD)blood,
Nor will I (ME)take their names upon my lips.

The Lord is the (MF)portion of my inheritance and my (MG)cup;
You support my (MH)lot.
The (MI)lines have fallen to me in pleasant places;
Indeed, my heritage is (MJ)beautiful to me.

I will bless the Lord who has (MK)counseled me;
Indeed, my [eo](ML)mind instructs me in the night.
(MM)I have (MN)set the Lord continually before me;
Because He is (MO)at my right hand, (MP)I will not be shaken.
Therefore (MQ)my heart is glad and (MR)my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will (MS)dwell securely.
10 For You (MT)will not abandon my soul to [ep]Sheol;
Nor will You [eq](MU)allow Your [er]Holy One to [es]undergo decay.
11 You will make known to me (MV)the path of life;
In (MW)Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are (MX)pleasures forever.

Prayer for Protection against Oppressors.

A Prayer of David.

17 Hear a (MY)just cause, O Lord, (MZ)give heed to my cry;
(NA)Give ear to my prayer, which is not from (NB)deceitful lips.
Let (NC)my [et]judgment come forth from Your presence;
Let Your eyes look with (ND)equity.
You have (NE)tried my heart;
You have visited me by night;
You have (NF)tested me and (NG)You find [eu]nothing;
I have (NH)purposed that my mouth will not transgress.
As for the deeds of men, (NI)by the word of Your lips
I have kept from the (NJ)paths of the violent.
My (NK)steps have held fast to Your [ev]paths.
My (NL)feet have not slipped.

I have (NM)called upon You, for You will answer me, O God;
(NN)Incline Your ear to me, hear my speech.
(NO)Wondrously show Your lovingkindness,
O (NP)Savior of those who take refuge [ew]at Your right hand
From those who rise up against them.
Keep me as [ex]the (NQ)apple of the eye;
Hide me (NR)in the shadow of Your wings
From the (NS)wicked who despoil me,
My (NT)deadly enemies who surround me.
10 They have (NU)closed their [ey]unfeeling heart,
With their mouth they (NV)speak proudly.
11 They have now (NW)surrounded us in our steps;
They set their eyes (NX)to cast us down to the ground.
12 He is (NY)like a lion that is eager to tear,
And as a young lion (NZ)lurking in hiding places.

13 (OA)Arise, O Lord, confront him, (OB)bring him low;
(OC)Deliver my soul from the wicked with (OD)Your sword,
14 From men with (OE)Your hand, O Lord,
From men [ez]of the world, (OF)whose portion is in this life,
And whose belly You (OG)fill with Your treasure;
They are satisfied with children,
And leave their abundance to their babes.
15 As for me, I shall (OH)behold Your face in righteousness;
(OI)I will be satisfied [fa]with Your (OJ)likeness when I awake.

The Lord Praised for Giving Deliverance.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord, [fb]who spoke to the Lord the words of this song in the day that the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said,

18 “I love You, O Lord, (OK)my strength.”
The Lord is (OL)my [fc]rock and (OM)my fortress and my (ON)deliverer,
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge;
My (OO)shield and the (OP)horn of my salvation, my (OQ)stronghold.
I call upon the Lord, who is (OR)worthy to be praised,
And I am (OS)saved from my enemies.

The (OT)cords of death encompassed me,
And the (OU)torrents of [fd]ungodliness [fe]terrified me.
The (OV)cords of [ff]Sheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.
In my (OW)distress I called upon the Lord,
And cried to my God for help;
He heard my voice (OX)out of His temple,
And my (OY)cry for help before Him came into His ears.

Then the (OZ)earth shook and quaked;
And the (PA)foundations of the mountains were trembling
And were shaken, because He was angry.
Smoke went up [fg]out of His nostrils,
And (PB)fire from His mouth devoured;
Coals were kindled by it.
He (PC)bowed the heavens also, and came down
With thick (PD)darkness under His feet.
10 He rode upon a (PE)cherub and flew;
And He sped upon the (PF)wings of the wind.
11 He made (PG)darkness His hiding place, (PH)His [fh]canopy around Him,
Darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
12 From the (PI)brightness before Him passed His thick clouds,
Hailstones and (PJ)coals of fire.
13 The Lord also (PK)thundered in the heavens,
And the Most High uttered His voice,
Hailstones and coals of fire.
14 He (PL)sent out His arrows, and scattered them,
And lightning flashes in abundance, and [fi]routed them.
15 Then the (PM)channels of water appeared,
And the foundations of the world were [fj]laid bare
At Your (PN)rebuke, O Lord,
At the blast of the (PO)breath of Your nostrils.

16 He (PP)sent from on high, He took me;
He drew me out of (PQ)many waters.
17 He (PR)delivered me from my strong enemy,
And from those who hated me, for they were (PS)too mighty for me.
18 They confronted me in (PT)the day of my calamity,
But (PU)the Lord was my stay.
19 He brought me forth also into a (PV)broad place;
He rescued me, because (PW)He delighted in me.

20 The Lord has (PX)rewarded me according to my righteousness;
According to the (PY)cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.
21 For I have (PZ)kept the ways of the Lord,
And have (QA)not wickedly departed from my God.
22 For all (QB)His ordinances were before me,
And I did not put away His (QC)statutes from me.
23 I was also [fk](QD)blameless with Him,
And I (QE)kept myself from my iniquity.
24 Therefore the Lord has (QF)recompensed me according to my righteousness,
According to the cleanness of my hands in His eyes.

25 With (QG)the kind You show Yourself kind;
With the [fl]blameless (QH)You show Yourself blameless;
26 With the pure You show Yourself (QI)pure,
And with the crooked (QJ)You show Yourself [fm]astute.
27 For You (QK)save an afflicted people,
But (QL)haughty eyes You abase.
28 For You (QM)light my lamp;
The Lord my God (QN)illumines my darkness.
29 For by You I can [fn](QO)run upon a troop;
And by my God I can (QP)leap over a wall.

30 As for God, His way is [fo](QQ)blameless;
The (QR)word of the Lord is tried;
He is a (QS)shield to all who take refuge in Him.
31 For (QT)who is God, but the Lord?
And who is a (QU)rock, except our God,
32 The God who (QV)girds me with strength
And [fp]makes my way [fq](QW)blameless?
33 He (QX)makes my feet like hinds’ feet,
And (QY)sets me upon my high places.
34 He (QZ)trains my hands for battle,
So that my arms can (RA)bend a bow of bronze.
35 You have also given me (RB)the shield of Your salvation,
And Your (RC)right hand upholds me;
And (RD)Your [fr]gentleness makes me great.
36 You (RE)enlarge my steps under me,
And my [fs](RF)feet have not slipped.

37 I (RG)pursued my enemies and overtook them,
And I did not turn back (RH)until they were consumed.
38 I shattered them, so that they were (RI)not able to rise;
They fell (RJ)under my feet.
39 For You have (RK)girded me with strength for battle;
You have [ft](RL)subdued under me those who rose up against me.
40 You have also made my enemies (RM)turn their backs to me,
And I [fu](RN)destroyed those who hated me.
41 They cried for help, but there was (RO)none to save,
Even to the Lord, but (RP)He did not answer them.
42 Then I beat them fine as the (RQ)dust before the wind;
I emptied them out as the mire of the streets.

43 You have delivered me from the (RR)contentions of the people;
You have placed me as (RS)head of the nations;
A (RT)people whom I have not known serve me.
44 As soon as they hear, they obey me;
Foreigners [fv](RU)submit to me.
45 Foreigners (RV)fade away,
And (RW)come trembling out of their [fw]fortresses.

46 The Lord (RX)lives, and blessed be (RY)my rock;
And exalted be (RZ)the God of my salvation,
47 The God who (SA)executes vengeance for me,
And (SB)subdues peoples under me.
48 He (SC)delivers me from my enemies;
Surely You (SD)lift me above those who rise up against me;
You rescue me from the (SE)violent man.
49 Therefore I will (SF)give thanks to You among the nations, O Lord,
And I will (SG)sing praises to Your name.
50 He gives great [fx](SH)deliverance to His king,
And shows lovingkindness to (SI)His anointed,
To David and (SJ)his [fy]descendants forever.

The Works and the Word of God.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

19 The (SK)heavens are telling of the glory of God;
And their (SL)expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
Day to (SM)day pours forth speech,
And (SN)night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words;
Their voice is not heard.
Their [fz](SO)line has gone out through all the earth,
And their utterances to the end of the world.
In them He has (SP)placed a tent for the sun,
Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber;
It rejoices as a strong man to run his course.
Its (SQ)rising is from [ga]one end of the heavens,
And its circuit to the [gb]other end of them;
And there is nothing hidden from its heat.

(SR)The law of the Lord is [gc](SS)perfect, (ST)restoring the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is (SU)sure, making (SV)wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are (SW)right, (SX)rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the Lord is (SY)pure, (SZ)enlightening the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the Lord are (TA)true; they are (TB)righteous altogether.
10 They are more desirable than (TC)gold, yes, than much fine gold;
(TD)Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.
11 Moreover, by them (TE)Your servant is warned;
In keeping them there is great (TF)reward.
12 Who can (TG)discern his errors? (TH)Acquit me of (TI)hidden faults.
13 Also keep back Your servant (TJ)from presumptuous sins;
Let them not (TK)rule over me;
Then I will be [gd](TL)blameless,
And I shall be acquitted of (TM)great transgression.
14 Let the words of my mouth and (TN)the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
O Lord, (TO)my rock and my (TP)Redeemer.

Prayer for Victory over Enemies.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

20 May the Lord answer you (TQ)in the day of trouble!
May the (TR)name of the (TS)God of Jacob set you securely on high!
May He send you help (TT)from the sanctuary
And (TU)support you from Zion!
May He (TV)remember all your meal offerings
And (TW)find your burnt offering [ge]acceptable! [gf]Selah.

May He grant you your (TX)heart’s desire
And (TY)fulfill all your [gg]counsel!
[gh]We will (TZ)sing for joy over your [gi]victory,
And in the name of our God we will (UA)set up our banners.
May the Lord (UB)fulfill all your petitions.

Now (UC)I know that the Lord saves His anointed;
He will (UD)answer him from His holy heaven
With the [gj](UE)saving strength of His right hand.
Some [gk]boast in chariots and some in (UF)horses,
But (UG)we [gl]will boast in the name of the Lord, our God.
They have (UH)bowed down and fallen,
But we have (UI)risen and stood upright.
[gm](UJ)Save, O Lord;
May the (UK)King answer us in the day we call.

Praise for Deliverance.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

21 O Lord, in Your strength the king will (UL)be glad,
And in Your [gn]salvation how greatly he will rejoice!
You have (UM)given him his heart’s desire,
And You have not withheld the request of his lips. [go]Selah.
For You (UN)meet him with the blessings of good things;
You set a (UO)crown of fine gold on his head.
He asked life of You,
You (UP)gave it to him,
(UQ)Length of days forever and ever.
His (UR)glory is great through Your [gp]salvation,
(US)Splendor and majesty You place upon him.
For You make him [gq]most (UT)blessed forever;
You make him joyful (UU)with gladness in Your presence.

For the king (UV)trusts in the Lord,
And through the lovingkindness of the Most High (UW)he will not be shaken.
Your hand will (UX)find out all your enemies;
Your right hand will find out those who hate you.
You will make them (UY)as a fiery oven in the time [gr]of your anger;
The Lord will (UZ)swallow them up in His wrath,
And (VA)fire will devour them.
10 Their [gs]offspring You will destroy from the earth,
And their [gt](VB)descendants from among the sons of men.
11 Though they [gu](VC)intended evil against You
And (VD)devised a plot,
They will not succeed.
12 For You will (VE)make them turn their back;
You will [gv]aim (VF)with Your bowstrings at their faces.
13 Be exalted, O Lord, in Your strength;
We will (VG)sing and praise Your power.

A Cry of Anguish and a Song of Praise.

For the choir director; upon [gw]Aijeleth Hashshahar. A Psalm of David.

22 (VH)My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?
[gx](VI)Far from my deliverance are the words of my [gy](VJ)groaning.
O my God, I (VK)cry by day, but You do not answer;
And by night, but [gz]I have no rest.
Yet (VL)You are holy,
O You who [ha]are enthroned upon (VM)the praises of Israel.
In You our fathers (VN)trusted;
They trusted and You (VO)delivered them.
To You they cried out and were delivered;
(VP)In You they trusted and were not [hb]disappointed.

But I am a (VQ)worm and not a man,
A (VR)reproach of men and (VS)despised by the people.
All who see me [hc](VT)sneer at me;
They [hd]separate with the lip, they (VU)wag the head, saying,
[he]Commit yourself to the Lord; (VV)let Him deliver him;
Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.”

Yet You are He who (VW)brought me forth from the womb;
You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts.
10 Upon You I was cast (VX)from [hf]birth;
You have been my God from my mother’s womb.

11 (VY)Be not far from me, for [hg]trouble is near;
For there is (VZ)none to help.
12 Many (WA)bulls have surrounded me;
Strong bulls of (WB)Bashan have encircled me.
13 They (WC)open wide their mouth at me,
As a ravening and a roaring (WD)lion.
14 I am (WE)poured out like water,
And all my (WF)bones are out of joint;
My (WG)heart is like wax;
It is melted within [hh]me.
15 My (WH)strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And (WI)my tongue cleaves to my jaws;
And You (WJ)lay me [hi]in the dust of death.
16 For (WK)dogs have surrounded me;
[hj]A band of evildoers has encompassed me;
[hk]They (WL)pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I can count all my bones.
(WM)They look, they stare at me;
18 They (WN)divide my garments among them,
And for my clothing they cast lots.

19 But You, O Lord, (WO)be not far off;
O You my help, (WP)hasten to my assistance.
20 Deliver my [hl]soul from (WQ)the sword,
My (WR)only life from the [hm]power of the dog.
21 Save me from the (WS)lion’s mouth;
From the horns of the (WT)wild oxen You (WU)answer me.

22 I will (WV)tell of Your name to my brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.
23 (WW)You who fear the Lord, praise Him;
All you [hn]descendants of Jacob, (WX)glorify Him,
And (WY)stand in awe of Him, all you [ho]descendants of Israel.
24 For He has (WZ)not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted;
Nor has He (XA)hidden His face from him;
But (XB)when he cried to Him for help, He heard.

25 From You comes (XC)my praise in the great assembly;
I shall (XD)pay my vows before those who fear Him.
26 The [hp]afflicted will eat and (XE)be satisfied;
Those who seek Him will (XF)praise the Lord.
Let your (XG)heart live forever!
27 All the (XH)ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord,
And all the (XI)families of the nations will worship before [hq]You.
28 For the (XJ)kingdom is the Lord’s
And He (XK)rules over the nations.
29 All the [hr](XL)prosperous of the earth will eat and worship,
All those who (XM)go down to the dust will bow before Him,
Even he who [hs](XN)cannot keep his soul alive.
30 [ht](XO)Posterity will serve Him;
It will be told of the Lord to (XP)the coming generation.
31 They will come and (XQ)will declare His righteousness
To a people (XR)who will be born, that He has performed it.

The Lord, the Psalmist’s Shepherd.

A Psalm of David.

23 The Lord is my (XS)shepherd,
I [hu]shall (XT)not want.
He makes me lie down in (XU)green pastures;
He (XV)leads me beside [hv](XW)quiet waters.
He (XX)restores my soul;
He (XY)guides me in the [hw](XZ)paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.

Even though I (YA)walk through the [hx]valley of the shadow of death,
I (YB)fear no [hy]evil, for (YC)You are with me;
Your (YD)rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You (YE)prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You [hz]have (YF)anointed my head with oil;
My (YG)cup overflows.
[ia]Surely (YH)goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will [ib](YI)dwell in the house of the Lord [ic]forever.

The King of Glory Entering Zion.

A Psalm of David.

24 The (YJ)earth is the Lord’s, and [id]all it contains,
The (YK)world, and those who dwell in it.
For He has (YL)founded it upon the seas
And established it upon the rivers.
Who may (YM)ascend into the (YN)hill of the Lord?
And who may stand in His holy (YO)place?
He who has (YP)clean hands and a (YQ)pure heart,
Who has not (YR)lifted up his soul [ie]to falsehood
And has not (YS)sworn deceitfully.
He shall receive a (YT)blessing from the Lord
And [if](YU)righteousness from the God of his salvation.
[ig]This is the generation of those who (YV)seek Him,
Who seek Your face—even Jacob. [ih]Selah.

(YW)Lift up your heads, O gates,
And be lifted up, O [ii]ancient doors,
That the King of (YX)glory may come in!
Who is the King of glory?
The Lord (YY)strong and mighty,
The Lord (YZ)mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, O gates,
And lift them up, O [ij]ancient doors,
That the King of (ZA)glory may come in!
10 Who is this King of glory?
The Lord of (ZB)hosts,
He is the King of glory. Selah.
