¹⁸ ¶ If the world hates you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

¹⁹ If ye were of the world, the world would love its own; but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

²⁰ Remember the word that I said unto you, The slave is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my word, they will keep yours also.

²¹ But they will do all these things unto you for my name’s sake, because they do not know him that sent me.

²² If I had not come and spoken unto them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.

²³ He that hates me hates my Father also.

²⁴ If I had not done among them works which no other man has done, they would not have sin; but now they have seen them and hate both me and my Father.

²⁵ But this comes to pass that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

²⁶ ¶ But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceeds from the Father, he shall testify of me;

²⁷ and ye also shall bear witness because ye have been with me from the beginning.

16 ¶ These things I have spoken unto you that ye should not be offended.

² They shall put you out of the synagogues, and the hour will even come when whosoever kills you will think that he does God service.

³ And they will do these things unto you because they do not know the Father, nor me.

⁴ But I have told you these things that when that hour shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And I did not say these things unto you at the beginning because I was with you.

⁵ But now I go unto him that sent me, and none of you asks me, Where goest thou?

⁶ But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow has filled your heart.

⁷ ¶ Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

⁸ And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment:

⁹ of sin, because they do not believe in me;

¹⁰ of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

¹¹ of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

¹² I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

¹³ Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth, for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak, and he will cause you to know the things which are to come.

¹⁴ He shall clarify me, for he shall take of that which is mine and shall cause you to know it.

¹⁵ All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he shall take of that which is mine and shall cause you to know it.

¹⁶ ¶ A little while, and ye shall not see me; and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

¹⁷ Then some of his disciples said among themselves, What is this that he says unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me; and again, a little while, and ye shall see me; and, Because I go to the Father?

¹⁸ They said therefore, What is this that he says, A little while? we cannot understand what he says.

¹⁹ Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of what I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me; and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?

²⁰ Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, and the world shall rejoice; but even though ye shall be sorrowful, your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

²¹ The woman, when she is in travail, has pain, because her hour is come; but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembers the anguish no more, for joy that a man is born into the world.

²² And ye now therefore have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and no one shall take your joy from you.

²³ ¶ And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give you.

²⁴ Until now ye have asked nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be fulfilled.

²⁵ I have spoken these things unto you in proverbs, but the hour comes when I shall no longer speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall show you plainly of the Father.

²⁶ In that day ye shall ask in my name, and I do not say unto you that I will ask the Father for you;

²⁷ for the Father himself loves you because ye have loved me and have believed that I came out from God.

²⁸ ¶ I came forth from the Father and am come into the world; again, I leave the world and go to the Father.

²⁹ His disciples said unto him, Behold, now thou speakest plainly and speakest no proverb.

³⁰ Now we understand that thou knowest all things and needest not that anyone should ask thee; by this we believe that thou didst come forth from God.

³¹ Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

³² Behold, the hour comes and is now come, that ye shall be scattered, each one to his own, and shall leave me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

³³ These things I have spoken unto you that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

17 ¶ Jesus spoke these words and lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, Father, the hour is come; clarify thy Son, that thy Son may also clarify thee,

² as thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

³ And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

⁴ I have clarified thee on the earth; I have finished the work which thou didst give me to do.

⁵ And now, O Father, clarify thou me with thine own self with that clarity which I had with thee before the world was.

⁶ ¶ I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou didst give me out of the world; thine they were, and thou didst give them me; and they have kept thy word.

⁷ Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.

⁸ For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

⁹ I pray for them; I do not pray for the world, but for those whom thou hast given me; for they are thine.

¹⁰ And all my things are thine, and thine are mine; and I have been clarified in them.

¹¹ ¶ And now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, those whom thou hast given me, keep them in thy name, that they may be one, as we are.

¹² While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name; those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled.

¹³ And now I come to thee; and these things I speak in the world that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

¹⁴ I have given them thy word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

¹⁵ I do not pray that thou should take them out of the world, but that thou should keep them from the evil.

¹⁶ They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

¹⁷ ¶ Sanctify them in thy truth; thy word is the truth.

¹⁸ As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

¹⁹ And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified in the truth.

²⁰ ¶ Neither do I pray for these alone, but also for those who shall believe in me through their word;

²¹ that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us, that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

²² And the clarity which thou gavest me I have given them, that they may be one, even as we are one:

²³ I in them, and thou in me, that they may be perfect in one and that the world may know that thou hast sent me and hast loved them as thou hast loved me.

²⁴ ¶ Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am, that they may behold my clarity, which thou hast given me, for thou hast loved me from before the foundation of the world.

²⁵ O righteous Father, the world has not known thee; but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

²⁶ And I have manifested unto them thy name and will manifest it still, that the love with which thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

18 ¶ When Jesus had spoken these things, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he entered, and his disciples.

² And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus gathered there often with his disciples.

³ Judas then, taking a company of soldiers and ministers of the high priests and of the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.

⁴ Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

⁵ They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said unto them, I AM. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them.

⁶ And when he said unto them, I AM, they went backward and fell to the ground.

⁷ Then he asked them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

⁸ Jesus answered, I have told you that I AM; if, therefore, ye seek me, let these go away,

⁹ that the word might be fulfilled, which he spoke, Of those whom thou gavest me I have lost none.

¹⁰ Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and smote the high priest’s slave and cut off his right ear. The slave’s name was Malchus.

¹¹ Then Jesus said unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath; the cup which my Father has given me, shall I not drink it?

¹² Then the company of soldiers and the tribune and the ministers of the Jews took Jesus and bound him

¹³ ¶ and led him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was the high priest of that year and he sent him bound unto Caiaphas, the high priest.

¹⁴ Now Caiaphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

¹⁵ And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple; that disciple was known unto the high priest and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.

¹⁶ But Peter stood at the door without. Then that other disciple, who was known unto the high priest, went out and spoke unto her that kept the door and brought in Peter.

¹⁷ Then the damsel that kept the door said unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He said, I am not.

¹⁸ And the slaves and servants stood there, who had made a fire of coals, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves; and Peter stood with them and warmed himself.

¹⁹ The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples and of his doctrine.

²⁰ Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews gather; and I have said nothing in secret.

²¹ Why dost thou ask me? Ask those who heard me what I have said unto them; behold, they know what I said.

²² And when he had thus spoken, one of the servants who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

²³ Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil, but if well, why dost thou smite me?

²⁴ Thus Annas sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

²⁵ And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it and said, I am not.

²⁶ One of the slaves of the high priest, kinsman of the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said, Did I not see thee in the garden with him?

²⁷ Peter then denied again, and immediately the cock crew.

²⁸ ¶ Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment, and it was early; and they themselves did not go into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the passover.

²⁹ Pilate then went out unto them and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?

³⁰ They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.

³¹ Then Pilate said unto them, Take him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death;

³² that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying what death he should die.

³³ Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again and called Jesus and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

³⁴ Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it unto thee of me?

³⁵ Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me; what hast thou done?

³⁶ Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews; now, therefore, my kingdom is not from here.

³⁷ Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I AM king. To this end I was born, and for this cause I came into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice.

³⁸ Pilate said unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and said unto them, I find no fault at all in him.

³⁹ But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover; will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

⁴⁰ Then they all cried again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

19 ¶ Then Pilate, therefore, took Jesus and scourged him.

² And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him

³ and said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

⁴ Pilate therefore went forth again and said unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

⁵ Then Jesus came forth, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said unto them, Behold the man!

⁶ When the princes of the priests and the servants saw him, they cried out, saying, crucify him, crucify him. {Gr. stauroo – hang him on a stake} Pilate said unto them, Take him, and crucify him, for I find no fault in him.

⁷ The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die because he made himself the Son of God.

⁸ Therefore when Pilate heard that word, he was the more afraid

⁹ and went again into the judgment hall and said unto Jesus, Where art thou from? But Jesus gave him no answer.

¹⁰ Then Pilate said unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee {Gr. stauroo – hang thee on a stake} and have power to release thee?

¹¹ Jesus answered, Thou could have no power at all against me, unless it were given thee from above; therefore he that delivered me unto thee has the greater sin.

¹² And from then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend; whosoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.

¹³ Therefore when Pilate heard that word, he brought Jesus forth and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

¹⁴ And it was the preparation of the passover and about the sixth hour; then he said unto the Jews, Behold your King!

¹⁵ But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate said unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The high priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

¹⁶ ¶ So that then, he delivered him unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away.

¹⁷ And he, bearing his cross, {Gr. stauros – stake} went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha,

¹⁸ where they crucified him and two others with him, one on either side and Jesus in the middle.

¹⁹ ¶ And Pilate also wrote a title and put it above the cross. {Gr. stauros – stake} And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

²⁰ And many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near to the city; and it was written in Hebrew and Greek and Latin.

²¹ Then the high priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews, but that he said, I AM King of the Jews.

²² Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

²³ Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts (to each soldier a part); and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

²⁴ They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be; that the scripture might be fulfilled, which says, They parted my garments among them, and for my raiment they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

²⁵ Now there stood by the cross {Gr. stauros – stake} of Jesus his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

²⁶ When Jesus therefore saw his mother and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he said unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

²⁷ Then he said to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

²⁸ After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said, I thirst.

²⁹ Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar, and they filled a sponge with vinegar and put it upon hyssop and put it to his mouth.

³⁰ When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished, and he bowed his head and gave up the Spirit.

³¹ ¶ The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross {Gr. stauros – stake} on the sabbath day (for that sabbath day was a high day) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.

³² Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who were crucified with him.

³³ But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was dead already, they did not break his legs,

³⁴ but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith blood and water came out.

³⁵ And he that saw it gives testimony, and his testimony is true, and he knows that he says the truth, that ye also might believe.

³⁶ For these things were done that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

³⁷ And again another scripture says, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

³⁸ ¶ After these things, Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore and took the body of Jesus.

³⁹ Then Nicodemus came also, who at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about one hundred pounds.

⁴⁰ And they took the body of Jesus and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as is the manner of the Jews to bury.

⁴¹ Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new sepulchre, in which no one had yet been laid.

⁴² Therefore they laid Jesus there because of the Jews’ preparation day, for the sepulchre was near.

20 ¶ The first of the sabbaths, Mary Magdalene came early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre and saw the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

² Then she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

³ Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.

⁴ So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came first to the sepulchre.

⁵ And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet he did not go in.

⁶ Then came Simon Peter following him and went into the sepulchre and saw the linen clothes lying

⁷ and the napkin, that had been placed over his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.

⁸ Then that other disciple, who came first to the sepulchre, went in also and he saw and believed.

⁹ For as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

¹⁰ Then the disciples went away again unto their own.

¹¹ ¶ But Mary stood outside near the sepulchre weeping, and as she wept, she stooped down and looked into the sepulchre

¹² and saw two angels in white sitting, the one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been placed.

¹³ And they said unto her, Woman, why dost thou weep? She said unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.

¹⁴ And when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there and did not know that it was Jesus.

¹⁵ Jesus said unto her, Woman, why dost thou weep? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, said unto him, Lord, if thou didst carry him off, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

¹⁶ Jesus said unto her, Mary! Turning herself around, she said unto him, Rabboni, which is to say, Master.

¹⁷ Jesus said unto her, Touch me not, for I have not yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brethren and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God.

¹⁸ Mary Magdalene came giving the news to the disciples, That I have seen the Lord, and he spoke these things unto me.

¹⁹ ¶ Then the same day at evening, being the first of the sabbaths, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said unto them, Peace be unto you.

²⁰ And having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

²¹ Then Jesus said to them again, Peace be unto you; as my Father has sent me, even so send I you.

²² And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said unto them, Receive ye the Holy Spirit;

²³ unto those whose sins ye release, they shall be released; and unto those whose sins ye retain, they shall be retained.

²⁴ But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

²⁵ The other disciples, therefore, said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Unless I shall see in his hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the print of the nails and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

²⁶ ¶ And again eight days later, his disciples were within and Thomas with them; then Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst and said, Peace be unto you.

²⁷ Then he said to Thomas, Reach here thy finger and behold my hands and reach here thy hand and thrust it into my side and be not unbelieving, but faithful.

²⁸ And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

²⁹ Jesus said unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed; blessed are those that have not seen and yet have believed.

³⁰ And Jesus truly did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book;

³¹ but these are written that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye might have life in his name.

21 ¶ After these things Jesus manifested himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias, and he manifested himself in this manner:

² Simon Peter and Thomas, called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee and the sons of Zebedee and two other of his disciples were together.

³ Simon Peter said unto them, I am going fishing. They said unto him, Let us also go with thee. They went forth and entered into a ship immediately, and that night they caught nothing.

⁴ But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not understand that it was Jesus.

⁵ Then Jesus said unto them, Children, have ye any food? They answered him, No.

⁶ And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right hand side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

⁷ Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher’s coat unto him (for he was naked) and cast himself into the sea.

⁸ And the other disciples came in the little ship (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits), dragging the net with the fishes.

⁹ As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and a fish laid thereon, and bread.

¹⁰ Jesus said unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.

¹¹ Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land full of great fishes, one hundred and fifty-three; and being so many, yet the net was not broken.

¹² Jesus said unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples dared to ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.

¹³ Jesus then came and took the bread and gave them, and the fish likewise.

¹⁴ This was now the third time that Jesus manifested himself to his disciples, after he was risen from the dead.

¹⁵ ¶ So when they had dined, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He said unto him, Yes, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He said unto him, Feed my lambs.

¹⁶ He said to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He said unto him, Yes, Lord thou knowest that I love thee. He said unto him, Feed my sheep.

¹⁷ He said unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus said unto him, Feed my sheep.

¹⁸ Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou didst gird thyself and walk where thou wouldest, but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee and carry thee where thou wouldest not.

¹⁹ This he spoke, signifying by what death he should clarify God. And when he had spoken this, he said unto him, Follow me.

²⁰ ¶ Then Peter, turning about, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrays thee?

²¹ Peter seeing him said to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?

²² Jesus said unto him, If I will that he tarry until I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

²³ Then this saying went abroad among the brethren that that disciple should not die; yet Jesus did not say unto him, He shall not die, but, If I will that he tarry until I come, what is that to thee?

²⁴ This is the disciple who testifies of these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.

²⁵ And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which, if they should be written every one, I think that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

1 ¶ The former treatise I have made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

² until the day in which, having given commandments by the Holy Spirit unto the apostles whom he had chosen, he was received on high;

³ unto whom he also showed himself alive, after he had suffered, by many infallible proofs, appearing unto them for forty days and speaking to them of the kingdom of God;

⁴ and gathering them together, he commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, Which, he said, ye have heard of me.

⁵ For John truly baptized in water, but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.

⁶ ¶ Then those that were come together asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

⁷ And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father has put under his authority only.

⁸ But ye shall receive the virtue of the Holy Spirit which shall come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judaea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

⁹ And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

¹⁰ And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel,

¹¹ who also said, Ye men of Galilee, what do ye stand gazing at up into heaven? This same Jesus, who is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

¹² ¶ Then they returned unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey.

¹³ And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where Peter and James and John and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James were.

¹⁴ These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary, the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

¹⁵ ¶ And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples and said (the number of names together were about one hundred and twenty),

¹⁶ Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit by the mouth of David spoke before concerning Judas, who was guide to those that took Jesus.

¹⁷ For he was numbered with us, and had obtained a lot or inheritance of this ministry.

¹⁸ He, therefore, purchased a field with the reward of his iniquity; and hanging himself, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

¹⁹ And it was known unto all the dwellers of Jerusalem, in such a manner that the field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.

²⁰ For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no one dwell therein, and let another take his office.

²¹ It behooves, therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

²² beginning from the baptism of John unto that same day that he was received on high from among us, that one must be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

²³ And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

²⁴ And they prayed and said, Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of everyone, show which of these two thou hast chosen,

²⁵ that he may take the lot or inheritance of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas rebelled that he might go to his own place.

²⁶ And they gave forth their lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

2 ¶ And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

² And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

³ And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

⁴ And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

⁵ ¶ (And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.)

⁶ Now at this sound, the multitude came together and were confounded because each one heard them speak in his own tongue.

⁷ And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these who speak Galilaeans?

⁸ And how do we hear each one speak in our own tongue, with which we were brought up?

⁹ Parthians and Medes and Elamites and the dwellers in Mesopotamia and in Judaea and Cappadocia, in Pontus and Asia,

¹⁰ Phrygia and Pamphylia, in Egypt and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,

¹¹ Cretes and Arabians, we hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

¹² And they were all amazed and were in doubt, saying one to another, What does this mean?

¹³ Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

¹⁴ ¶ Then Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea and all ye that dwell in Jerusalem, be this known unto you and hearken to my words;

¹⁵ for these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

¹⁶ But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel:

¹⁷ And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;

¹⁸ and for certain on my slaves and on my handmaids I will pour out in those days of my Spirit, and they shall prophesy;

¹⁹ and I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath: blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke;

²⁰ the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood before that great and notable day of the Lord shall come;

²¹ and it shall come to pass that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

²² Ye men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know,

²³ him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken and by wicked hands have crucified and slain,

²⁴ whom God has raised up, having loosed the pains of death because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

²⁵ For David speaks concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved,

²⁶ therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover even my flesh shall rest in hope

²⁷ because thou wilt not leave my soul in Hades, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

²⁸ Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.

²⁹ Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.

³⁰ Therefore being a prophet and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne;

³¹ he, seeing this before, spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that his soul was not left in Hades, neither did his flesh see corruption.

³² This Jesus God has raised up, of whom we all are witnesses.

³³ Therefore being raised up by the right hand of God and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which ye now see and hear.

³⁴ For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand

³⁵ until I make thy foes thy footstool.

³⁶ Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

³⁷ ¶ Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

³⁸ Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized each one of you into the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

³⁹ For the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

⁴⁰ And with many other words he testified and exhorted, saying, Be saved from this perverse generation.

⁴¹ So that those who gladly received his word were baptized, and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

⁴² ¶ And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship and in breaking of bread and in prayers.

⁴³ And fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

⁴⁴ And all that believed were together and had all things common

⁴⁵ and sold their possessions and property and distributed them to everyone, as each one had need.

⁴⁶ And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food together with gladness and singleness of heart,

⁴⁷ praising God and having grace with all the people. And the Lord added to the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} daily such as should be saved.

3 ¶ Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour.

² And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms {lit. acts of mercy} of those that entered into the temple,

³ who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked for alms.

⁴ And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us.

⁵ And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them.

⁶ Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have I give thee: in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.

⁷ And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.

⁸ And he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered with them into the temple, walking and leaping and praising God.

⁹ And all the people saw him walking and praising God,

¹⁰ and they knew that it was he who sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him.

¹¹ And as the lame man who was healed held onto Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon’s, greatly wondering.

¹² ¶ And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own virtue or godliness we had made this man walk?

¹³ The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his Son Jesus, whom ye delivered up and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he had judged to let him go.

¹⁴ But ye denied the Holy One and the Just and desired a murderer to be granted unto you

¹⁵ and killed the Author of life, whom God has raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses.

¹⁶ And in the faith of his name, unto this man whom ye see and know, has confirmed his name; and the faith which is by him has given this man this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

¹⁷ And now, brethren, I know that through ignorance ye did it as did also your princes.

¹⁸ But God has thus fulfilled those things which he had showed in advance by the mouth of all his prophets, that his Christ should suffer.

¹⁹ Repent ye therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out, for the times of refreshing of the presence of the Lord are come;

²⁰ who has sent Jesus Christ, who before was preached unto you,

²¹ whom it is certainly necessary that the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the age began.

²² For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things doing whatever he shall say unto you.

²³ And it shall come to pass that every soul which will not hear that prophet shall be destroyed from among the people.

²⁴ And all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.

²⁵ Ye are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

²⁶ Unto you first, God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, that each one of you might turn from his iniquities.

4 ¶ And as they spoke unto the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,

² resentful that they taught the people and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

³ And they laid hands on them and put them in jail unto the next day, for it was now evening.

⁴ But many of those who heard the word believed, and the number of the men was about five thousand.

⁵ ¶ And it came to pass on the next day that their princes and elders and scribes

⁶ and Annas, the high priest, and Caiaphas and John and Alexander and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest were gathered together at Jerusalem.

⁷ And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power or by what name have ye done this?

⁸ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said unto them, Ye princes of the people and elders of Israel,

⁹ if we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole,

¹⁰ be it known unto you all and to all the people of Israel that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him does this man stand here before you whole.

¹¹ This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.

¹² Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men in which we can be saved.

¹³ Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled, and they took knowledge of them that they had been with Jesus.

¹⁴ And beholding the man who was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.

¹⁵ ¶ But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,

¹⁶ saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle has been done by them is manifest to all those that dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.

¹⁷ But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them that from now on they speak to no man in this name.

¹⁸ And they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

¹⁹ Then Peter and John answered and said unto them, Judge whether it is right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God.

²⁰ For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

²¹ So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way how they might punish them because of the people, for everyone glorified God for that which was done.

²² For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shown.

²³ ¶ And being let go, they went to their own company and reported all that the princes of the priests and the elders had said unto them.

²⁴ And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord and said, Lord, thou art the God, who hast made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them,

²⁵ who (in the Holy Spirit) by the mouth of thy servant David (our father) hast said, Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples imagine vain things?

²⁶ The kings of the earth were present, and the princes were gathered together against the Lord and against his Christ.

²⁷ For of a truth against thy holy servant Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together (in this city),

²⁸ to do that which thy hand and thy counsel had determined beforehand must be done.

²⁹ And now, Lord, behold their threatenings and grant unto thy slaves that with all boldness they may speak thy word,

³⁰ that thou might stretch forth thine hand so that healings and signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy slave Jesus.

³¹ And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

³² ¶ And of the multitude of those that had believed was one heart and one soul; no one said that anything he possessed was his own, but they had all things common.

³³ And with great power the apostles gave witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.

³⁴ Neither was there any among them that lacked, for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them and brought the prices of the things that were sold

³⁵ and laid them down at the apostles’ feet; and distribution was made unto each one according to their need.

³⁶ Then Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation), a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,

³⁷ having land, sold it and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

5 ¶ But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession

² and defrauded of the price, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

³ But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled thy heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to defraud of the price of the land?

⁴ Retaining it, was it not thy own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thy heart? Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

⁵ Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and gave up the spirit; and great fear came on all those that heard these things.

⁶ And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out and buried him.

⁷ And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.

⁸ Then Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yes, for so much.

⁹ Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried thy husband are at the door and shall carry thee out.

¹⁰ Then she fell down straightway at his feet and yielded up the spirit; and the young men came in and found her dead and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

¹¹ And great fear came upon all the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} and upon as many as heard these things.

¹² ¶ And by the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were wrought in the people. (And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch.

¹³ And of the others, no one dared join themself to them, but the people magnified them.

¹⁴ And those that believed in the Lord increased in number, multitudes both of men and women.)

¹⁵ So much that they brought forth the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.

¹⁶ There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks and those who were tormented with unclean spirits, and they were healed every one.

¹⁷ ¶ Then the prince of the priests rose up, and all those that were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees) were filled with jealousy

¹⁸ and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison.

¹⁹ But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors and brought them forth and said,

²⁰ Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.

²¹ And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning and taught. In the meantime, the prince of the priests came, and those that were with him, and called the council together and all the elders of the sons of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.

²² But when the officers came and found them not in the prison, they returned and told,

²³ saying, We certainly found the prison shut with all security and the keepers standing outside before the doors, but when we had opened, we found no one within.

²⁴ Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the princes of the priests heard these things, they were perplexed regarding what this would come to.

²⁵ Then someone came and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.

²⁶ ¶ Then the captain with the officers went and brought them without violence, for they feared being stoned by the people.

²⁷ And when they had brought them, they set them before the council, and the prince of the priests asked them,

²⁸ saying, Did we not strictly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.

²⁹ Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We must persuade God rather than men.

³⁰ The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew, hanging him on a tree.

³¹ God has exalted him with his right hand as Prince and Saviour, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.

³² And we are his witnesses of these things, and so is also the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those that persuade him.

³³ When they heard that, they were divided and took counsel to slay them.

³⁴ Then a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, who had a reputation among all the people, stood up in the council and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space

³⁵ and said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as concerning these men.

³⁶ For before these days, rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves; who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered and brought to nought.

³⁷ After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing and drew away many people after him; he also perished, and all those that consented with him were dispersed.

³⁸ And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men and let them alone; for if this counsellor or this work is of men, it will come to nought,

³⁹ but if it is of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest ye be found fighting against God.

⁴⁰ And they agreed with him; and when they had called the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus and let them go.

⁴¹ And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

⁴² And daily in the temple and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach the gospel of Jesus the Christ.

6 ¶ And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, that their widows were neglected in the daily ministry.

² Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them and said, It is not right that we should leave the word of God and serve tables;

³ therefore, brethren, seek out among you seven men of whom you bear witness, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

⁴ And we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.

⁵ And the saying pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip and Prochorus and Nicanor and Timon and Parmenas and Nicolas, a proselyte of Antioch:

⁶ these they set before the apostles, and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.

⁷ And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly, and also a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.
