Genesis 3-4

Adam and Eve Sent Out from the Garden

Now (A)the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which Yahweh God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘[a]You shall not eat from [b]any tree of the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “(B)From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God said, ‘You shall not eat from it, and you shall not touch it, lest you die.’” (C)And the serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and (D)you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (E)Then the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, so she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they (F)knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves [c]loin coverings.

Then they heard the sound of (G)Yahweh God walking in the garden in the [d]cool of the day, (H)and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God in the midst of the trees of the garden. Yahweh God called to the man and said to him, “(I)Where are you?” 10 And he said, “(J)I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 (K)And the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave to me from the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then Yahweh God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “(L)The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 And Yahweh God said to the serpent,

(M)Because you have done this,
Cursed are you more than any of the cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you will go,
And (N)dust you will eat
All the days of your life;
15 And I will put (O)enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her seed;
(P)He shall [e]bruise you on the head,
And you shall bruise him on the heel.”

16 To the woman He said,

“I will greatly multiply
Your pain and [f]conception,
In pain you will [g](Q)bear children;
Your desire will be for your husband,
And (R)he will rule over you.”

17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’;

(S)Cursed is the ground because of you;
(T)In [h]pain you will eat of it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall (U)grow for you;
And you will eat the [i]plants of the field;
19 By the sweat of your [j]face
You will eat bread,
Till you (V)return to the ground,
Because (W)from it you were taken;
For you are dust,
And to dust you shall return.”

20 Now the man called his wife’s name [k](X)Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. 21 Then Yahweh God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.

22 Then Yahweh God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of (Y)Us [l]to know good and evil; and now, lest he send forth his hand and take also from (Z)the tree of life and eat and live forever”— 23 therefore Yahweh God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to [m]cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So (AA)He drove the man out; and at the (AB)east of the garden of Eden He stationed the (AC)cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to [n]guard the way to (AD)the tree of life.

Cain and Abel

Now the man [o]knew his wife Eve, and she conceived and [p]gave birth to [q]Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a [r]man with the help of Yahweh.” And again, she [s]gave birth to his brother Abel. (AE)Abel was (AF)a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a cultivator of the ground. So it happened [t]in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to Yahweh of the fruit of the ground. (AG)Abel, on his part, also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And (AH)Yahweh had regard for Abel and for his offering; but (AI)for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So (AJ)Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell. Then Yahweh said to Cain, “(AK)Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? (AL)If you do well, [u]will not your countenance be lifted up? (AM)And if you do not do well, sin is lying at the door; and its desire is for you, (AN)but you must rule over it.” Then Cain [v]spoke to Abel his brother; and it happened when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and (AO)killed him.

Then Yahweh said to Cain, “(AP)Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” 10 And He said, “What have you done? (AQ)The voice of your brother’s blood is crying out to Me from the ground. 11 And now, (AR)cursed are you from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 (AS)When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; (AT)you will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth.” 13 And Cain said to Yahweh, “My punishment is too great to bear! 14 Behold, You have (AU)driven me this day from the face of the ground; and from Your face I will be hidden, and (AV)I will be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth, and it will be that (AW)whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 So Yahweh said to him, “Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him (AX)sevenfold.” And Yahweh [w](AY)appointed a sign for Cain, so that no one who found him would strike him.

16 Then Cain went out from the presence (AZ)of Yahweh and [x]settled in the land of [y]Nod, east of Eden.

17 Then Cain [z]knew his wife, and she conceived and [aa]gave birth to Enoch; and he built a city and called the name of the city Enoch, after the name of his son. 18 Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad [ab]was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael [ac]was the father of Methushael, and Methushael [ad]was the father of Lamech. 19 And Lamech took for himself (BA)two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other, Zillah. 20 And Adah [ae]gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and have livestock. 21 And his brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. 22 As for Zillah, she also [af]gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

23 And Lamech said to his wives,

“Adah and Zillah,
Hear my voice,
You wives of Lamech,
Give ear to my word,
(BB)For I [ag]have killed a man for [ah]striking me;
And a boy for wounding me;
24 If Cain is avenged (BC)sevenfold,
Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”

25 (BD)Then Adam [ai]knew his wife again; and she [aj]gave birth to a son and named him [ak]Seth, for she said, “God [al]has set for me another [am]seed in place of Abel, (BE)for Cain killed him.” 26 And to Seth, to him also, (BF)a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. Then men began (BG)to call [an]upon the name of Yahweh.

Matthew 2:13-3:6

The Flight to Egypt

13 Now when they had departed, behold, an (A)angel of the [a]Lord *(B)appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him.”

14 So [b]Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and departed for Egypt. 15 And he [c]remained there until the death of Herod, in order that what had been spoken by the [d]Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, “(C)Out of Egypt I called (D)My Son.”

Herod Slaughters Children

16 Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by (E)the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and (F)slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had carefully determined from the magi. 17 Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying,

18 (G)A voice was heard in Ramah,
Weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children;
And she was refusing to be comforted,
Because they were no more.”

19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the [e]Lord *(H)appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, 20 “Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.” 21 So [f]Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being (I)warned by God in a dream, he departed for the district of Galilee, 23 and came and lived in a city called (J)Nazareth, so that what was spoken through the prophets would be fulfilled: “He shall be called a (K)Nazarene.”

The Preaching of John the Baptist

Now (L)in those days [g](M)John the Baptist *[h]came, [i]preaching in the (N)wilderness of Judea, saying, (O)Repent, for (P)the kingdom of heaven [j]is at hand.” For this is the (Q)one referred to [k]by Isaiah the prophet, saying,

(R)The voice of one [l]crying in the wilderness,
(S)Make ready the way of the [m]Lord,
Make His paths straight!’”

Now John himself had [n](T)a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was (U)locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem (V)was going out to him, and all Judea, and all (W)the district around the Jordan; and they were being (X)baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.

Psalm 2

The Reign of Yahweh’s Anointed

Why do (A)the [a]nations rage
And the peoples (B)meditate on a vain thing?
The (C)kings of the earth take their stand
And the rulers take counsel together
(D)Against Yahweh and against His [b](E)Anointed, saying,
“Let us (F)tear their fetters apart
And cast away their cords from us!”

He who [c]sits in the heavens (G)laughs,
The Lord (H)mocks them.
Then He speaks to them in His (I)anger
And (J)terrifies them in His fury, saying,
“But as for Me, I have [d]installed (K)My King
Upon Zion, (L)My holy mountain.”

“I will surely tell of the [e]decree of Yahweh:
He said to Me, ‘You are (M)My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
Ask of Me, and (N)I will surely give (O)the [f]nations as Your inheritance,
And the (P)ends of the earth as Your possession.
You shall [g](Q)break them with a [h]rod of iron,
You shall (R)shatter them like a potter’s vessel.’”

10 So now, O kings, (S)show insight;
Take warning, O [i]judges of the earth.
11 Serve Yahweh with (T)fear
And rejoice with (U)trembling.
12 [j]Kiss (V)the Son, lest He become angry, and you perish in the way,
For (W)His [k]wrath may [l]soon be kindled.
How blessed are all who (X)take refuge in Him!

Proverbs 1:7-9

(A)The fear of [a]Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge;
[b]Ignorant fools despise wisdom and discipline.

The Enticement of Sinners

(B)Hear, my son, your father’s discipline
And (C)do not abandon your mother’s [c]instruction;
For they are a (D)garland of grace for your head
And [d](E)ornaments about your neck.
