17 And Isaac departed from there and camped in the valley of Gerar and [a]settled there.
The Quarrel over the Wells
18 Then Isaac dug again the wells of water which [b]had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, but the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham; and he [c]called them by the same names by which his father had called them. 19 Then Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found there a well of [d]flowing water. 20 And the herdsmen of Gerar (A)contended with the herdsmen of Isaac, saying, “The water is ours!” So he named the well [e]Esek, because they quarreled with him. 21 Then they dug another well, and they contended over it also, so he called it [f]Sitnah. 22 Then he moved away from there and dug another well, and they did not contend over it; so he named it [g]Rehoboth, and he said, “[h](B)At last Yahweh has made [i]room for us, and we will be (C)fruitful in the land.”
23 And he went up from there to (D)Beersheba. 24 And Yahweh (E)appeared to him that night and said,
“(F)I am the God of your father Abraham;
(G)Do not fear, for I am with you.
I (H)will bless you and multiply your seed,
For the sake of My servant Abraham.”
25 So he built an (I)altar there and called upon the name of Yahweh and pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug out a well.
Isaac’s Oath with Abimelech
26 Now (J)Abimelech came to him from Gerar [j]with his adviser Ahuzzath and Phicol the commander of his army. 27 And Isaac said to them, “(K)Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?” 28 Then they said, “We see plainly (L)that Yahweh has been with you; so we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us—between [k]you and us—and let us cut a covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you [l]and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the (M)blessed of Yahweh.’” 30 Then (N)he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. 31 In the morning they arose early, and (O)each swore to [m]the other; then Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace. 32 Now it happened on that day, that Isaac’s servants came in and told him about the well which they had dug and said to him, “We have found water.” 33 So he called it Shibah; therefore the name of the city is (P)Beersheba to this day.
34 And Esau was forty years old, (Q)and he took as a wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite; 35 and (R)they [n]brought bitterness to Isaac and Rebekah.
Isaac Calls to Bless Esau
27 Now it happened that when Isaac was old and (S)his eyes were too dim to see, that he called his (T)older son Esau and said to him, “My son.” And he said to him, “Here I am.” 2 [o](U)And Isaac said, “Behold now, I am old, and I do not know the day of my death. 3 So now, please take up your gear, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and (V)hunt game for me; 4 and prepare a savory dish for me such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, so that (W)my soul may bless you before I die.”
5 Now Rebekah was listening while Isaac was speaking to his son Esau. Then Esau went to the field to hunt for game to bring to Isaac. 6 (X)But Rebekah spoke to her son Jacob, saying, “Behold, I heard your father speaking to your brother Esau, saying, 7 ‘Bring me some game and prepare a savory dish for me, that I may eat and bless you in the presence of Yahweh before my death.’ 8 So now, my son, (Y)listen to my voice [p]as I command you. 9 Go now to the flock and [q]get for me two choice [r]young goats from there, that I may prepare them as a savory dish for your father, such as he loves. 10 Then you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death.” 11 Then Jacob [s]answered his mother Rebekah, “Behold, Esau my brother is a (Z)hairy man, and I am a smooth man. 12 (AA)Perhaps my father will feel me, then I will be as a mocker in his sight, and I will bring upon myself a curse and not a blessing.” 13 But his mother said to him, “Your curse be on me, my son; only (AB)listen to my voice, and go, get them for me.” 14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother; and his mother made a savory dish such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took the [t]best (AC)garments of Esau her elder son, which were with her in the house, and she put them on Jacob her younger son. 16 And she put the skins of the [u]young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 She also gave the savory dish and the bread, which she had prepared into the hand of her son Jacob.
Isaac Blesses Jacob and Esau
18 Then he came to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?” 19 And Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done as you told me. (AD)Rise up, please, sit and eat of my game, that (AE)your soul may bless me.” 20 Then Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?” And he said, “(AF)Because Yahweh your God caused it to happen to me.” 21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that (AG)I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.” 22 So Jacob came near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 And he did not recognize him because his hands were (AH)hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him. 24 And he said, “Are you really my son Esau?” And he said, “I am.” 25 So he said, “Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, that (AI)my soul may bless you.” And he brought it near to him, and he ate; he also brought him wine, and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come near and kiss me, my son.” 27 So he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his garments, and then he (AJ)blessed him and said,
“See, (AK)the smell of my son
Is like the smell of a field (AL)which Yahweh has blessed;
28 Now may (AM)God give you of the dew of heaven,
And of the (AN)fatness of the earth,
And an abundance of grain and new wine;
29 (AO)May peoples serve you,
And nations bow down to you;
(AP)Be master of your brothers,
(AQ)And may your mother’s sons bow down to you.
(AR)Cursed be those who curse you,
And blessed be those who bless you.”
30 Now it happened that as soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had hardly gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting. 31 Then he also made a savory dish and brought it to his father; and he said to his father, “(AS)Let my father arise and eat of his son’s game, that (AT)your soul may bless me.” 32 And Isaac his father said to him, “(AU)Who are you?” And he said, “I am your son, (AV)your firstborn, Esau.” 33 Then Isaac [v]trembled exceedingly violently and said, “(AW)Who was he then that hunted game and brought it to me, so that I ate of all of it before you came and blessed him? (AX)Indeed, he shall be blessed.” 34 As Esau heard the words of his father, (AY)he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me, me also, O my father!” 35 And he said, “(AZ)Your brother came deceitfully and has taken away your blessing.” 36 Then he said, “[w]Is he not rightly named (BA)Jacob, for he has supplanted me these two times? He took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?” 37 But Isaac answered and said to Esau, “Behold, I have made him (BB)your master, and all his fellow brothers I have given to him [x]as servants; and with grain and new wine I have sustained him. Now as for you then, what can I do, my son?” 38 And Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father.” So Esau lifted his voice and (BC)wept.
39 Then (BD)Isaac his father answered and said to him,
“Behold, [y](BE)away from the fatness of the earth shall be your habitation,
And [z]away from the dew of heaven from above.
40 By your sword you shall live,
And your brother (BF)you shall serve;
But it shall be (BG)when you become restless,
That you will [aa]break his yoke from your neck.”
41 So Esau (BH)bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him; and Esau said in his heart, “(BI)The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.” 42 Then the words of her elder son Esau were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Behold, your brother Esau is consoling himself concerning you by planning to kill you. 43 So now, my son, (BJ)listen to my voice, and arise, [ab]flee to (BK)Haran, to my brother (BL)Laban! 44 Stay with him (BM)a few days, until your brother’s wrath [ac]subsides, 45 until your brother’s anger [ad]against you subsides and he forgets (BN)what you did to him. Then I will send and get you from there. Why should I be bereaved of you both in one day?”
46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am tired of [ae]living because of (BO)the daughters of Heth; (BP)if Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth, like these, from the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”
Jesus Heals a Paralytic
9 And getting into a boat, Jesus crossed over the sea and came to (A)His own city.
2 (B)And behold, they brought to Him a (C)paralytic lying on a bed. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, “(D)Take courage, [a]son; (E)your sins are forgiven.” 3 And behold, some of the scribes said [b]to themselves, “This man (F)blasphemes.” 4 And Jesus (G)knowing their thoughts said, “Why are you thinking evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, ‘(H)Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But so that you may know that (I)the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then He *said to the (J)paralytic, “Get up, pick up your bed and go home.” 7 And he got up and [c]went home. 8 But when the crowds saw this, they were afraid, and (K)glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
Matthew and Sinners Called
9 (L)And as Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called (M)Matthew, sitting in the tax office; and He *said to him, “(N)Follow Me!” And he stood up and followed Him.
10 [d]Then it happened that as [e]Jesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and [f]sinners came and were dining with Jesus and His disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “(O)Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when Jesus heard this, He said, “It is not (P)those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. 13 But go and learn [g](Q)what this means: ‘(R)I desire [h]compassion, [i]and not sacrifice,’ for (S)I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
A Question About Fasting
14 Then the disciples of John *came to Him, [j]asking, “Why do we and (T)the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, “Can the [k]attendants of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 But no one puts [l]a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for [m]the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results. 17 Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”
