Genesis 28-29

Jacob Is Sent to Laban

28 So Isaac called Jacob and (A)blessed him and commanded him and said to him, “(B)You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of (C)Bethuel your mother’s father; and from there take to yourself a wife from the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother. May [a](D)God Almighty (E)bless you and (F)make you fruitful and (G)multiply you, that you may become an (H)assembly of peoples. May He also give you the (I)blessing of Abraham, to you and to your seed with you, that you may (J)possess the land of your (K)sojournings, which God gave to Abraham.” Then (L)Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

And Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram to take for himself a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, saying, “(M)You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,” and that Jacob had listened to his father and his mother and had gone to Paddan-aram. So Esau saw that (N)the daughters of Canaan were displeasing [b]in the sight of his father Isaac; and Esau went to Ishmael and took Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife, (O)besides the wives that he had.

Jacob’s Dream

10 Then Jacob departed from (P)Beersheba and went toward (Q)Haran. 11 And he reached [c]a (R)certain place and spent the night there because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of the place and put it [d]under his head and lay down in that place. 12 (S)Then he had a dream, and behold, a [e]ladder stood on the earth with its top touching heaven; and behold, (T)the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 And behold, (U)Yahweh stood [f]above it and said, “I am Yahweh, (V)the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it (W)to you and to (X)your seed. 14 And your seed will also be like (Y)the dust of the earth, and you will [g]spread out (Z)to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and (AA)in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. 15 Behold, (AB)I am with you and (AC)will keep you wherever you go. And (AD)I will bring you back to this land; for (AE)I will not forsake you until I have done what I have [h]promised you.” 16 Then Jacob (AF)awoke from his sleep and said, “(AG)Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17 And he was afraid and said, “(AH)How fearsome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

18 So Jacob rose early in the morning and took (AI)the stone that he had put [i]under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top. 19 And he called the name of that place [j](AJ)Bethel; however, [k]previously the name of the city had been (AK)Luz. 20 Then Jacob (AL)made a vow, saying, “(AM)If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey on which I am going, and will give me [l](AN)food to eat and garments to wear, 21 and (AO)I return to my father’s house in peace, (AP)then Yahweh will be my God. 22 Now this stone, which I have set up as a pillar, (AQ)will be God’s house, and (AR)of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”

Jacob’s Love for Rachel

29 Then Jacob [m]took up his journey and came to the land of (AS)the sons of the east. And he looked, and behold, (AT)a well in the field, and behold, three flocks of sheep were lying there beside it, for from that well they gave water to the flocks to drink. Now the stone on the mouth of the well was large. And all the flocks would be gathered there, and they would roll the stone from the mouth of the well and give water to the sheep to drink and return the stone back to its place on the mouth of the well.

And Jacob said to them, “My brothers, where are you from?” And they said, “We are from (AU)Haran.” Then he said to them, “Do you know Laban the (AV)son of Nahor?” And they said, “We know him.” And he said to them, “Is it well with him?” And they said, “It is well, and here is (AW)Rachel his daughter coming with the sheep.” And he said, “Behold, it is still high day; it is not time for the livestock to be gathered. Give water to the sheep to drink, and go, pasture them.” But they said, “We cannot, until all the flocks are gathered, and they roll the stone from the mouth of the well; then we give water to the sheep to drink.”

While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherdess. 10 Now it happened, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother’s brother and the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother, Jacob came near and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well and gave water to the flock of Laban his mother’s brother to drink. 11 Then Jacob (AX)kissed Rachel and lifted his voice and wept. 12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was a [n](AY)relative of her father and that he was Rebekah’s son, and (AZ)she ran and told her father.

13 So it happened that when (BA)Laban heard the report of Jacob his sister’s son, he ran to meet him, and he (BB)embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house. Then he recounted to Laban all these things. 14 And Laban said to him, “Surely you are (BC)my bone and my flesh.” And he stayed with him one month.

15 Then Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my [o]relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall (BD)your wages be?” 16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 And Leah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was (BE)beautiful in form and beautiful in appearance. 18 Now Jacob (BF)loved Rachel, so he said, “(BG)I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.” 19 And Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you than to give her to another man; stay with me.” 20 So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they were in his sight but a few days (BH)because of his love for her.

Laban Deceives Jacob

21 Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may (BI)go in to her.” 22 And Laban gathered all the men of the place and made a feast. 23 Now it happened in the evening that he took his daughter Leah and brought her to him; and Jacob went in to her. 24 Laban also gave his servant-woman Zilpah to his daughter Leah as a servant-woman. 25 Now it happened in the morning that, behold, it was Leah! And he said to Laban, “(BJ)What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served with you? Why then have you (BK)deceived me?” 26 But Laban said, “It is not [p]the practice in our place to give the younger before the firstborn. 27 Fulfill the week of this one, and we will give you the other also for the service which (BL)you shall serve with me for another seven years.” 28 And Jacob did so and fulfilled her week, and he gave him his daughter Rachel as his wife. 29 Laban also gave his servant-woman Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her servant-woman. 30 So Jacob went in to Rachel also, and indeed (BM)he loved Rachel more than Leah, and he served with [q]Laban for (BN)another seven years.

31 And Yahweh saw that Leah was [r]unloved, and He opened her womb, but Rachel was barren. 32 So Leah conceived and bore a son and named him [s]Reuben, for she said, “Because Yahweh has [t](BO)seen my affliction; surely now my husband will love me.” 33 Then she conceived again and bore a son and said, “(BP)Because Yahweh has [u]heard that I am [v]unloved, He has therefore given me this son also.” So she named him Simeon. 34 And she conceived again and bore a son and said, “Now this time my husband will be [w]joined to me because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore he was named (BQ)Levi. 35 And she conceived again and bore a son and said, “This time I will [x]praise Yahweh.” Therefore she named him [y](BR)Judah. Then she stopped bearing.

Matthew 9:18-38

Miracles of Healing

18 (A)While He was saying these things to them, behold, [a]a synagogue [b]official came and [c](B)was bowing down before Him, and said, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 And Jesus got up and began to follow him, and so did His disciples.

20 And behold, a woman who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years, came up behind Him and touched (C)the [d]fringe of His [e]garment; 21 for she was saying [f]to herself, “If I only (D)touch His garment, I will [g]be saved from this.” 22 But Jesus turning and seeing her said, “Daughter, (E)take courage; (F)your faith has [h]saved you.” [i]At once the woman was [j]saved from her hemorrhage.

23 And when Jesus came into the [k]official’s house, and saw (G)the flute-players and the crowd in noisy disorder, 24 He was saying, “Leave; for the girl (H)has not died, but is asleep.” And they began laughing at Him. 25 But (I)when the crowd had been sent out, coming in, He (J)took her by the hand, and the girl [l]got up. 26 (K)And this news spread throughout all that land.

27 And as Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, [m]crying out, “Have mercy on us, (L)Son of David!” 28 And when He entered the house, the blind men came up to Him, and Jesus *said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They *said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, [n]It shall be done to you (M)according to your faith.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus (N)sternly warned them, saying, “See that no one knows about this!” 31 But they went out and (O)spread the news about Him throughout all that land.

32 Now as they were going out, behold, (P)a mute, (Q)demon-possessed man [o]was brought to Him. 33 And after the demon was cast out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, “(R)Nothing like this has [p]ever been seen in Israel.” 34 But the Pharisees were saying, “He (S)casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons.”

35 And Jesus was going through all the cities and villages, (T)teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.

36 (U)And seeing the crowds, He felt compassion for them, (V)because they were [q]distressed and [r]downcast like sheep [s]without a shepherd. 37 Then He *said to His disciples, (W)The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”

Psalm 11

Yahweh Is in His Holy Temple

For the choir director. Of David.

11 In Yahweh I (A)take refuge;
How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your (B)mountain;
For, behold, the wicked (C)bend the bow,
They [a](D)make ready their arrow upon the string
To (E)shoot in darkness at the upright in heart.
If the (F)foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?”

Yahweh is in His (G)holy temple; [b]Yahweh’s (H)throne is in heaven;
His (I)eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.
Yahweh (J)tests the righteous,
But (K)the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.
May He (L)rain [c]snares upon the wicked;
(M)Fire and brimstone and (N)burning wind will be the portion of (O)their cup.
For Yahweh is (P)righteous, (Q)He loves [d]righteousness;
The upright will (R)behold His face.

Proverbs 3:11-12

11 (A)My son, do not reject the [a]discipline of Yahweh
Or loathe His reproof,
12 For (B)whom Yahweh loves He reproves,
Even (C)as a father reproves the son in whom he delights.
