Genesis 39:1-41:16

Joseph in Potiphar’s House

39 Now Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian official of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him [a]from the (A)Ishmaelites, who had brought him down there. (B)And Yahweh was with Joseph, so he became a [b]successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian. Now his master (C)saw that Yahweh was with him and how Yahweh (D)caused all that he did to succeed in his hand. So Joseph (E)found favor in his sight and [c]attended on him; and he appointed him overseer over his house, and (F)all that he owned he gave in his hand. Now it happened that from the time he appointed him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, Yahweh (G)blessed the Egyptian’s house on account of Joseph; thus (H)the blessing of Yahweh was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field. So he left everything he owned in Joseph’s hand; and with him there he did not [d]concern himself with anything except the [e]food which he [f]ate.

Now Joseph was (I)beautiful in form and beautiful in appearance.

And it happened after these events (J)that his master’s wife [g]set her eyes on Joseph and said, “(K)Lie with me.” But (L)he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, with me here, my master [h]does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has given all that he owns into my hand. [i](M)There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil and (N)sin against God?” 10 So it happened that as she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her.

11 Now it happened [j]one day that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the household was there inside. 12 Then she seized him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” And he left his garment in her hand and fled and went outside. 13 Now it happened, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled outside, 14 that she called to the men of her household and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in a [k]Hebrew to us to laugh at us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I [l]screamed. 15 Now it happened that when he heard that I raised my voice and [m]screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled and went outside.” 16 And she placed his garment beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she (O)spoke to him [n]with these words, saying, “The Hebrew slave, whom you brought to us, came in to me to laugh at me; 18 and as I raised my voice and [o]screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled outside.”

Joseph Is Put into Jail

19 Now it happened that when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, “[p]This is what your slave did to me,” (P)his anger burned. 20 So Joseph’s master took him and (Q)put him into the jail, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined; and he was there in the jail. 21 But (R)Yahweh was with Joseph and [q]extended lovingkindness to him and (S)gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer. 22 So the chief jailer (T)gave into the hand of Joseph all the prisoners who were in the jail; so that whatever was done there, he was [r]the one who did it. 23 (U)The chief jailer did not supervise anything under Joseph’s hand because (V)Yahweh was with him; and whatever he did, (W)Yahweh made to succeed.

Joseph Interprets the Officials’ Dreams

40 Now it happened that after these things, (X)the cupbearer and the baker for the king of Egypt offended their lord, the king of Egypt. And Pharaoh was (Y)furious with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker. So he put them in confinement in the house of the (Z)captain of the bodyguard, in the jail, the same place where Joseph was imprisoned. And the captain of the bodyguard appointed Joseph as overseer over them, and he [s]attended to them; and they were in confinement for [t]some time. Then the cupbearer and the baker for the king of Egypt, who were confined in jail, both had a dream the same night, each man with his own dream and each dream with its own interpretation. Now Joseph came to them in the morning and saw them, and behold, they were dejected. So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were with him in confinement in his master’s house, saying, “(AA)Why are your faces so sad today?” Then they said to him, “(AB)We have [u]had a dream, and there is no one to interpret it.” Then Joseph said to them, “(AC)Do not interpretations belong to God? Recount it to me, please.”

So the chief cupbearer recounted his dream to Joseph and said to him, “In my dream, [v]behold, there was a vine in front of me; 10 and on the vine were three branches. And as it was budding, its blossoms came out, and its clusters produced ripe grapes. 11 Now Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; so I took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I put the cup into Pharaoh’s [w]hand.” 12 Then Joseph said to him, “This is the (AD)interpretation of it: the three branches are three days; 13 within three more days Pharaoh will [x]lift up your head and restore you to your [y]office; and you will put Pharaoh’s cup into his hand according to your former custom when you were his cupbearer. 14 Only remember me when it goes well with you, and please (AE)show me lovingkindness by remembering me to Pharaoh and getting me out of this house. 15 For (AF)I was in fact stolen from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing that they should have put me into the pit.”

16 And the chief baker saw that he had interpreted favorably, so he said to Joseph, “I also saw in my dream, and behold, there were three baskets of white bread on my head; 17 and in the top basket there were some of all [z]sorts of baked food for Pharaoh, and the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.” 18 Then Joseph answered and said, “This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days; 19 within three more days Pharaoh will lift up your head off of you and will hang you on a tree, and the birds will eat your flesh off of you.”

20 Thus it happened on the third day, which was (AG)Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants; (AH)and he lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants. 21 And he restored the chief cupbearer to his [aa]office, and (AI)he put the cup into Pharaoh’s [ab]hand; 22 but (AJ)he hanged the chief baker, just as Joseph had interpreted to them. 23 Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but (AK)forgot him.

Joseph Interprets Pharaoh’s Dream

41 Now it happened at the end of two full years that Pharaoh had a dream, and behold, he was standing by the Nile. And behold, from the Nile there came up seven cows, sleek and [ac]fat; and they grazed in the (AL)reeds. Then behold, seven other cows came up after them from the Nile, [ad]ugly and [ae]thin, and they stood by the other cows on the bank of the Nile. And the ugly and [af]thin cows ate up the seven sleek and fat cows. Then Pharaoh awoke. He again fell asleep and dreamed a second time; and behold, seven ears of grain came up on a single stalk, plump and good. And behold, seven ears, thin and scorched by the east wind, sprouted up after them. And the thin ears swallowed up the seven plump and full ears. Then Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream. Now it happened that in the morning (AM)his spirit was troubled, so he sent and called for all the [ag](AN)magicians of Egypt and all its (AO)wise men. And Pharaoh recounted to them his dream, but (AP)there was no one who could interpret them to Pharaoh.

Then the chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, “I would bring to remembrance today (AQ)my own [ah]offenses. 10 Pharaoh was (AR)furious with his servants, and (AS)he put me in confinement in the house of the captain of the bodyguard, both me and the chief baker. 11 (AT)And we had a dream [ai]on the same night, [aj]he and I; each of us dreamed according to the interpretation of his own dream. 12 Now there was with us a Hebrew youth, a (AU)slave of the captain of the bodyguard, and we recounted them to him, and (AV)he interpreted our dreams for us. To each one he interpreted according to his own dream. 13 And just (AW)as he interpreted for us, so it happened; he restored me in my [ak]office, but he hanged him.”

14 Then Pharaoh sent and (AX)called for Joseph, and they (AY)rushed him out of the pit; and he shaved himself and changed his clothes, and he came to Pharaoh. 15 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, (AZ)but no one can interpret it; yet (BA)I have heard [al]it said about you, that [am]you hear a dream and that you can interpret it.” 16 Joseph then answered Pharaoh, saying, “[an](BB)It is not in me; (BC)God will [ao]answer concerning the welfare of Pharaoh.”

Matthew 12:46-13:23

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers

46 (A)While He was still speaking to the crowds, behold, His (B)mother and (C)brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to Him. 47 [a]Now someone said to Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside seeking to speak to You.” 48 But [b]Jesus answered the one who was telling Him and said, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, “Behold My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.”

The Parable of the Sower

13 On that day Jesus went out of (D)the house and was sitting (E)by the sea. And [c]large crowds gathered to Him, so (F)He got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd was standing on the beach.

And He spoke many things to them in (G)parables, saying, “Behold, the sower went out to sow; and as he sowed, some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate them up. And others fell on the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of soil. But when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And others fell [d]among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out. And others fell on the good soil and were yielding [e]a crop, some a (H)hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty. (I)He who has ears, [f]let him hear.”

The Purpose of the Parables

10 And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” 11 And [g]Jesus answered and said to them, (J)To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 (K)For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him. 13 Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while (L)seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says,

[h](M)You will keep on hearing, [i]but will not understand;
[j]You will keep on seeing, but will not perceive;
15 (N)For the heart of this people has become dull,
And with their ears they scarcely hear,
And they have closed their eyes,
Lest they would see with their eyes,
Hear with their ears,
And understand with their heart and return,
And I would heal them.’

16 (O)But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. 17 For truly I say to you that (P)many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

The Parable of the Sower Explained

18 (Q)Hear then the parable of the sower. 19 When anyone hears (R)the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, (S)the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road. 20 And the one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he [k](T)falls away. 22 And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the one who hears the word, and the worry of (U)the [l]world and the (V)deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 23 And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some (W)a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.”

Psalm 17

In the Shadow of Your Wings

A Prayer of David.

17 Hear a (A)righteous cause, O Yahweh, (B)give heed to my cry of lamentation;
(C)Give ear to my prayer, which is not from (D)deceitful lips.
May (E)my [a]judgment come from Your presence;
May Your eyes behold (F)what is upright.
You have (G)tested my heart;
You have visited me by night;
You have (H)tried me and (I)You find [b]nothing;
I have (J)purposed that my mouth will not [c]transgress.
As for the deeds of men, (K)by the word of Your lips
I have kept from the (L)paths of the violent.
My (M)steps have held fast to Your [d]paths.
My (N)footsteps have not stumbled.

I have (O)called upon You, for You will answer me, O God;
(P)Incline Your ear to me, hear my speech.
(Q)Marvelously show Your lovingkindnesses,
O (R)Savior of those who take refuge [e]at Your right hand
From those who rise up against them.
Keep me as [f]the (S)apple of the eye;
Hide me (T)in the shadow of Your wings
From the (U)wicked who devastate me,
My (V)deadly enemies who surround me.
10 They have (W)closed their [g]unfeeling heart,
With their mouth they (X)speak proudly.
11 They have now (Y)surrounded us in our steps;
They set their eyes (Z)to cast us down to the ground.
12 He is (AA)like a lion that is eager to tear,
And as a young lion (AB)lurking in hiding places.

13 (AC)Arise, O Yahweh, confront him, (AD)bring him low;
(AE)Protect my soul from the wicked with (AF)Your sword,
14 From men with (AG)Your hand, O Yahweh,
From men [h]of the world, (AH)whose portion is in this life,
And whose belly You (AI)fill with Your treasure;
They are satisfied with children,
And leave their excess to their infants.
15 As for me, I shall (AJ)behold Your face in righteousness;
(AK)I will be satisfied [i]with Your (AL)likeness when I awake.

Proverbs 3:33-35

33 The (A)curse of Yahweh is on the house of the wicked one,
But He (B)blesses the abode of the righteous.
34 Though (C)He scoffs at the scoffers,
Yet (D)He gives grace to the humble.
35 (E)The wise will inherit glory,
But [a]fools raise up disgrace.
