Exodus 2:11-3:22

Moses Flees to Midian

11 Now it happened in those days, (A)that Moses had grown up. And he went out to his brothers and looked on their [a](B)hard labors. And (C)he saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers. 12 So he turned this way and that, and he saw that there was no one around. So he (D)struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 Then he went out (E)the next day, and behold, two Hebrews were struggling with each other; and he said to the [b]wicked one, “Why are you striking your companion?” 14 But he said, “(F)Who made you a [c]ruler or a judge over us? Are you [d]intending to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and said, “Surely the matter has become known.” 15 And Pharaoh heard of this matter, so he sought to kill Moses. But (G)Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, and he [e]sat down (H)by a well. 16 Now (I)the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and (J)they came and drew water and filled the troughs to give water to their father’s flock to drink. 17 Then the shepherds came and drove them away, but (K)Moses rose up and saved them and gave water to their flock to drink. 18 Then they came to (L)Reuel their father, and he said, “Why have you come back so soon today?” 19 So they said, “An Egyptian delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and he actually even drew the water for us and gave water to the flock to drink.” 20 And he said to his daughters, “Where is he then? Why is it that you have left the man behind? Call him so that he may eat bread.” 21 (M)And Moses was willing to settle down with the man, and he gave his daughter (N)Zipporah to Moses. 22 Then she gave birth to (O)a son, and he named him [f]Gershom, for he said, “I have been (P)a [g]sojourner in a foreign land.”

God Hears Israel’s Groaning

23 Now it happened in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel (Q)sighed because of the slavery, and they cried out; and (R)their cry for help because of their slavery rose up to God. 24 So (S)God heard their groaning; and God remembered (T)His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 25 (U)And God saw the sons of Israel, and God knew them.

God Calls Moses at the Burning Bush

Now Moses was pasturing the flock of (V)Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the [h]west side of the wilderness and came to (W)Horeb, the (X)mountain of God. (Y)And the angel of [i]Yahweh appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of the (Z)bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed. So Moses said, “[j](AA)I must turn aside now and see this [k]marvelous sight. Why is the bush not burned up?” And Yahweh saw that he turned aside to look, so (AB)God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Do not come near here. (AC)Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” He said also, “(AD)I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” (AE)Then Moses hid his face, for he was (AF)afraid to look at God.

And Yahweh said, “I have surely (AG)seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sufferings. So I have come down (AH)to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from that land to a (AI)good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of (AJ)the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. So now, behold, (AK)the cry of the sons of Israel has come to Me; and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 So now, come and I will send you to Pharaoh, (AL)and so you shall bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, “(AM)Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 And He said, “Certainly (AN)I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: (AO)when you have brought the people out of Egypt, (AP)you shall [l]serve God at this mountain.”

13 Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am about to come to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ And they will say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” 14 And God said to Moses, “[m](AQ)I AM WHO [n]I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘[o]I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 And God furthermore said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘(AR)Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is My (AS)memorial-name from generation to generation. 16 Go and (AT)gather the elders of Israel together and say to them, ‘(AU)Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, “[p](AV)I indeed care about you and what has been done to you in Egypt. 17 So (AW)I said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of (AX)the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite, to a land (AY)flowing with milk and honey.”’ 18 (AZ)And they will listen to your voice; and (BA)you with the elders of Israel will come to the king of Egypt, and you all will say to him, ‘Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. So now, please, let us go a (BB)three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to Yahweh our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt (BC)will not give you permission to go, (BD)except by a strong hand. 20 So I will stretch out (BE)My hand and strike Egypt with all My (BF)wondrous deeds which I shall do in the midst of it; and (BG)after that he will let you go. 21 And I will give this people (BH)favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and it shall be that when you go, you will not go empty. 22 But every woman (BI)shall ask of her neighbor and of the woman who lives in her house, for articles of silver and articles of gold, and clothing; and you will put them on your sons and daughters. Thus you will (BJ)plunder the Egyptians.”

Matthew 17:10-27

10 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Why then do the scribes say that (A)Elijah must come first?” 11 And He answered and said, “Elijah is coming and will restore all things; 12 but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did [a]to him whatever they wished. So also (B)the Son of Man is going to suffer [b]at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist.

Jesus Casts Out a Demon

14 (C)And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to Jesus, falling on his knees before Him and saying, 15 [c]Lord, have mercy on my son, for he has [d](D)seizures and suffers terribly; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 And I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him.” 17 And Jesus answered and said, “O you unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18 And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured [e]at once.

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” 20 And He *said to them, “Because of your little faith; for truly I say to you, (E)if you have faith [f]the size of (F)a mustard seed, you will say to (G)this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and (H)nothing will be impossible to you. 21 [g][(I)But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”]

22 (J)And while they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be [h]delivered into the hands of men; 23 and (K)they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day.” And they were deeply grieved.

The Temple Tax

24 Now when they came to Capernaum, those who collected (L)the [i]two-drachma tax came to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay (M)the [j]two-drachma tax?” 25 He *said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect (N)tolls or (O)taxes, from their sons or from strangers?” 26 And when Peter said, “From strangers,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are [k]exempt. 27 However, so that we do not [l](P)offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a [m]stater. Take that and give it to them for Me and you.”

Psalm 22:1-18

Why Have You Forsaken Me?

For the choir director. According to [a]Aijeleth Hashshahar. A Psalm of David.

22 (A)My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?
[b](B)Far from my salvation are the words of my [c](C)groaning.
O my God, I (D)call by day, but You do not answer;
And by night, but [d]I have no rest.
Yet (E)You are holy,
[e]Enthroned upon (F)the praises of Israel.
In You our fathers (G)trusted;
They trusted and You (H)rescued them.
To You they cried out and were granted escape;
(I)In You they trusted and were not [f]disappointed.

But I am a (J)worm and not a man,
A (K)reproach of men and (L)despised by the people.
All who see me (M)mock me;
They [g]smack their lip, they (N)wag their head, saying,
[h]Commit yourself to Yahweh; (O)let Him rescue him;
Let Him deliver him, because He delights in him.”

Yet You are He who (P)brought me out of the womb;
You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts.
10 Upon You I was cast (Q)from [i]birth;
You have been my God from my mother’s womb.

11 (R)Be not far from me, for [j]distress is near;
For there is (S)none to help.
12 Many (T)bulls have surrounded me;
Strong bulls of (U)Bashan have encircled me.
13 They (V)open wide their mouth at me,
As a (W)lion that tears and roars.
14 I am (X)poured out like water,
And all my (Y)bones are out of joint;
My (Z)heart is like wax;
It is melted within [k]me.
15 My (AA)strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And (AB)my tongue cleaves to my jaws;
And You (AC)lay me [l]in the dust of death.
16 For (AD)dogs have surrounded me;
[m]A band of evildoers has encompassed me;
[n]They (AE)pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I count all my bones.
(AF)They look, they stare at me;
18 They (AG)divide my garments among them,
And for my clothing they cast lots.

Proverbs 5:7-14

(A)So now, my sons, listen to me
And (B)do not turn away from the words of my mouth.
(C)Keep your way far from her
And do not go near the (D)door of her house,
Lest you give your splendor to others
And your years to the cruel one;
10 Lest strangers be satisfied by your strength
And by your painful labor, those in the house of a foreigner;
11 And you groan at your [a]end,
When your flesh and your body are consumed;
12 And you say, “How I have (E)hated discipline!
And my heart (F)spurned reproof!
13 I have not listened to the voice of my (G)instructors,
And I have not inclined my ear to my teachers!
14 I was almost in utter ruin
In the midst of the assembly and congregation.”
