Exodus 35:10-36:38

10 “‘Let everyone who is skilled[a] among you come and make everything that the Lord has commanded: 11 the tent, its tent, its covering, its clasps, its boards, its bars, its pillars, and its sockets, 12 the ark, its poles, the Mercy Seat, the curtain,[b] 13 the table, its poles, all its furnishings, and the bread of the presence, 14 the lamp stand for light, its furnishings, its lamps, and oil for the light, 15 the altar of incense, its poles, the anointing oil, the aromatic incense, and the screen for the doorway at the entrance to the tent, 16 the altar for burnt offerings, the bronze lattice for it, its poles, and all its furnishings, the basin and its base, 17 the hangings for the court, its pillars, its sockets,[c] the screen for the gate of the court, 18 the pegs for the tent, the pegs for the court, and their cords, 19 the woven garments for ministering in the Holy Place, the holy garments of Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons for serving as priests.’”

20 Then the entire congregation of the Israelis withdrew from Moses’ presence, 21 and every person whose heart moved him and all whose spirits prompted them, brought an offering to the Lord for constructing[d] the Tent of Meeting, for all its service, and for the holy garments. 22 Both the men and women came—all whose hearts prompted them—and brought brooches, earrings, rings, pendants, and all kinds of gold jewelry. Every person presented a wave offering of gold to the Lord.

23 Everyone who had blue, purple, and scarlet material, fine linen, goat hair, ram skins dyed red,[e] and dolphin[f] skins brought them. 24 Everyone who could give an offering of silver and bronze brought it as a contribution for the Lord. Also all who had acacia wood for any use in the work[g] brought it.

25 Every skilled[h] woman spun with her hands, and brought what she had spun: blue, purple, and scarlet material, and fine linen. 26 All the women who were skilled artisans[i] spun the goat hair.

27 The leaders brought onyx stones and stones to be set in the ephod and the breast piece, 28 spices and oil for the light and for the anointing oil and the aromatic incense. 29 Each Israeli man and woman whose heart was prompted brought something[j] as a freewill offering to the Lord for all the work that the Lord had commanded them to do through[k] Moses.

Craftsmen for Building the Tent

30 Moses told the Israelis, “Look, the Lord has called[l] Uri’s son Bezalel, grandson of Hur, from the tribe of Judah, 31 and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, and with knowledge of all kinds of work, 32 to make artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, 33 to cut stones for setting, to carve wood, and to engage in all kinds of artistic work. 34 And he has given both him and Ahisamach’s son Oholiab from the tribe of Dan the ability to teach. 35 He has equipped them[m] to do all kinds of work done by an engraver, designer, embroider in blue, purple and scarlet material and in fine linen, or as a weaver. They were able to do[n] all kinds of work and were skilled designers. 36 Bezalel and Oholiab and all the skilled craftsmen to whom the Lord gave wisdom and understanding to know how to do all the work in constructing[o] the sanctuary are to do everything that the Lord has commanded.”

Contributions for Building the Tent

Then Moses summoned Bezalel, Oholiab, and all the skilled[p] people to whom the Lord had given ability,[q] including everyone whose hearts stirred them to come forward to do the work. They received from Moses all the offerings that the Israelis had brought for doing the work of constructing[r] the sanctuary, and the people[s] continued to bring freewill offerings every morning. All the craftsmen who were doing all the work on the sanctuary left the work they were doing and told Moses, “The people are bringing much more than enough for the work that the Lord has commanded us to do.” Then Moses issued an order, and the message was taken throughout the camp, “Men and women, don’t bring any more offerings for the sanctuary.” The people were restrained from bringing any more,[t] since the material was more than sufficient for doing all the work.

All the skilled craftsmen among the workers made the tent with ten curtains of fine woven[u] linen, blue, purple, and scarlet material.[v] He[w] made them with cherubim skillfully worked into them. The length of each curtain was 28 cubits,[x] and the width of each curtain two cubits.[y] All the curtains had the same measurements.[z] 10 He joined five of the curtains together, and the other five curtains he joined together. 11 He made loops of blue material[aa] along the edge of the outermost curtain in the first set, and likewise, he made loops along the edge of the outermost curtain in the second set. 12 He made 50 loops in the one curtain, and he made 50 loops along the edge of the curtain that is in the second set, with the loops opposite each other. 13 Then he made 50 gold clasps, and joined the curtains to each other with the clasps so the tent was one piece.

14 He made curtains of goat hair for a tent over the tent; he made 11 curtains. 15 The length of each curtain was 30 cubits,[ab] and the width of each curtain was two cubits;[ac] the measurements of each of the eleven curtains was the same.[ad] 16 He joined five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves. 17 He made 50 loops along the edge of the outermost curtain in the first set, and 50 loops along the edge of the curtain of the other set. 18 He made 50 bronze clasps to join the tent together so it would be one piece. 19 Then he made a cover for the tent of ram skins dyed red[ae] and a covering of dolphin[af] skins above that.

20 Then he made upright boards of acacia wood for the tent. 21 Each[ag] board was ten cubits[ah] long, and one and a half cubits[ai] wide. 22 Each board had two pegs, joined to one another, and he did this for all the boards of the tent. 23 He made the boards for the tent: 20 boards for the south side.[aj] 24 He made 40 silver sockets under the 20 boards: two sockets under one board for its two pegs and two sockets[ak] under the next[al] board for its two pegs. 25 For the second side of the tent to the north he made 20 boards,[am] 26 and 40 silver sockets for them, two sockets under one board and two sockets under the next[an] board. 27 For the rear of the tent on the west he made six boards, 28 and he made two boards for the rear corners of the tent. 29 They were joined together[ao] at the bottom and they were connected[ap] on top, by one ring. He did this for the two of them, and they were the two corners. 30 There were eight boards with their sixteen silver sockets, two sockets under each board.

31 Then he made bars of acacia wood, five for the boards on one side of the tent, 32 five bars for the boards on the second side of the tent, and five bars for the boards on the back side of the tent to the west. 33 He made the middle bar in the center of the boards pass through from end to end. 34 He overlaid the boards with gold, and made gold rings for them as holders for the bars, and he overlaid the bars with gold.

35 He made a curtain of blue, purple, and scarlet material, and fine woven linen. He made it with cherubim skillfully worked into it. 36 He made four pillars of acacia for it and overlaid them with gold, along with their gold hooks, and he cast four silver sockets for them. 37 For the doorway of the tent, he made a screen of blue, purple, and scarlet material and fine woven linen, the work of an embroiderer, 38 and five pillars of acacia along with their hooks. He overlaid their tops and their bands[aq] with gold. Their five sockets were made of bronze.

Matthew 27:32-66

Jesus is Crucified(A)

32 As they were leaving, they found a man from Cyrene named Simon, whom they forced to carry Jesus’[a] cross. 33 When they came to a place called Golgotha (which means “Skull Place”), 34 they offered him a drink of wine mixed with gall. But when he tasted it, he refused to drink it. 35 After they had crucified him, they determined who would get his clothes by throwing dice for them.[b] 36 Then they sat down there and continued guarding him. 37 Above his head they placed the charge against him. It read, “This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.”

38 At that time two bandits[c] were crucified with him, one on his right and the other on his left. 39 Those who passed by kept insulting[d] him, shaking their heads, 40 and saying, “You who were going to destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days—save yourself! If you’re the Son of God, come down from the cross!”

41 In the same way the high priests, along with the scribes and elders, were also making fun of him. They kept saying, 42 “He saved others but can’t save himself! He is the king of Israel. Let him[e] come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God[f] rescue him, if he wants to do so now. After all, he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’

44 In a similar way, the bandits[g] who were being crucified with him kept insulting him.

Jesus Dies on the Cross(B)

45 From noon[h] on, darkness came over the whole land[i] until three in the afternoon.[j] 46 About three o’clock,[k] Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eli, eli,[l] lema sabachthani?”,[m] which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”[n]

47 When some of the people standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling for Elijah.”[o] 48 So one of the men ran off at once, took a sponge, and soaked it in some sour wine. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus[p] a drink.

49 But the others kept saying, “Wait! Let’s see if Elijah will come and save him.”[q]

50 Then Jesus cried out with a loud voice again and died.[r] 51 Suddenly, the curtain[s] in the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth shook, rocks were split open, 52 tombs were opened, and many[t] saints who had died[u] were brought back to life. 53 After his resurrection, they came out of their tombs, went into the Holy City,[v] and appeared to many people.

54 When the centurion[w] and those guarding Jesus with him saw the earthquake and the other things that were taking place, they were terrified and said, “This man certainly was the Son of God!”

55 Now many women were also there, watching from a distance. They had accompanied Jesus from Galilee and had ministered to[x] him. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene,[y] Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.

Jesus is Buried(C)

57 Later that evening, a rich man arrived from Arimathea. His name was Joseph, and he had become a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered it to be done. 59 So Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth. 60 Then he placed it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out of the rock. After rolling a large stone across the door of the tomb, he left, 61 but Mary Magdalene[z] and the other Mary remained there, sitting in front of the tomb.

The Tomb is Secured

62 The following day (that is, after the Day of Preparation), the high priests and Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said while he was still alive, ‘I will be raised after three days.’ 64 Therefore, order the tomb to be secured until the third day, or his disciples may go and steal him and then tell the people, ‘He has been raised from the dead.’ Then the last deception would be worse than the first one.”

65 Pilate told them, “You have[aa] a military guard. Go and make the tomb[ab] as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and secured the tomb by putting a seal on the stone in the presence of the guards.

Psalm 34:1-10

By David, when he pretended to be insane before Abimelech, who drove him away. So David[a] left.

Learning about God’s Deliverance

34 [b]I will bless the Lord at all times;
    his praise will be in my mouth continuously.
My soul will glorify the Lord;
    the humble will hear about it and rejoice.
Magnify the Lord with me!
Let us lift up his name together!

I sought the Lord and he answered me;
    he delivered me from all of my fears.
Look to him and be radiant;
    and you[c] will not be ashamed.

This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard
    and delivered him from all of his distress.
The angel of the Lord surrounds those who fear him,
    and he delivers them.

Taste and see that the Lord is good!
    How blessed is the person who trusts in him!
Fear the Lord, you holy ones of his;
    for those who fear him lack nothing.
10 Young lions lack and go hungry,
    but those who seek the Lord will never lack any good thing.

Proverbs 9:7-8

Wisdom Extends Life

Whoever corrects a mocker invites only insult,[a]
    and whoever rebukes the wicked will himself become stained.
Don’t rebuke a mocker or he will hate you.
    Rebuke a wise person, and he will love you.
