The Arrangement of the Camps

Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, “The Israelites[a] will encamp each with his standard, with a banner according to their families;[b] they will encamp around the tent of assembly. The ones who encamp on the eastern side, toward the sunrise, will be of the standard of the camp of Judah according to their divisions; and the leader of the descendants of Judah will be Nahshon son of Amminadab, and his division and the ones counted[c] are seventy-four thousand six hundred. And the ones who encamp next to him will be the tribe of Issachar. And the leader of the descendants of Issachar will be Nethanel son of Zuar, and his division are fifty-four thousand four hundred. For the tribe of Zebulun: the leader of the descendants of Zebulun will be Eliab son of Helon, and his division and the ones counted[d] are fifty-seven thousand four hundred. All those counted from the camp of Judah are one hundred and eighty-six thousand four hundred. They will set out first according to their divisions.

10 “The standard of the camp of Reuben will be to the south according to their divisions. The leader of the descendants will be Elizur son of Shedeur. 11 And his division and the ones counted[e] are forty-six thousand five hundred. 12 Those encamped next to him will be the tribe of Simeon. The leader of the descendants of Simeon will be Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. 13 And his division and the ones counted[f] are fifty-nine thousand three hundred. 14 For the tribe of Gad: the leader of the descendants of Gad will be Eliasaph son of Reuel. 15 And his division and the ones counted[g] are forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty. 16 All those counted[h] from the camp of Reuben are one hundred and fifty-one thousand four hundred and fifty. They will set out second according to their divisions.

17 “The tent of assembly the camp of the Levites will set out in the midst of the camps; they will set out just as they encamped, each according to their standards.[i]

18 “The standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their divisions will be to the west. The leader of the descendants of Ephraim will be Elishama son of Ammihud. 19 And his division and the ones counted[j] are forty thousand five hundred. 20 The tribe of Manasseh will be next to him. The leader of the descendants of the tribe of Manasseh will be Camaliel son of Pedahzur. 21 And his division and the ones counted[k] are thirty-two thousand two hundred. 22 For the tribe of Benjamin: the leader of the descendants of Benjamin will be Abidan son of Gideoni. 23 And his division and the ones counted[l] are thirty-five thousand four hundred. 24 All those counted[m] from the camp of Ephraim are one hundred and eighty thousand one hundred. They will set out third according to their divisions.

25 “The standard of the camp of Dan according to their divisions will be to the west. The leader of the descendants of Dan will be Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. 26 And his division and the ones counted[n] are sixty-two thousand seven hundred. 27 Those encamped next to him will be the tribe of Asher. The leader of the descendants of Asher will be Pagiel son of Ocran. 28 And his division and the ones counted[o] are forty-one thousand five hundred. 29 For the tribe of Naphtali: the leader of the descendants of Naphtali will be Ahira son of Enan. 30 And his division and the ones counted[p] are fifty-three thousand four hundred. 31 All the ones counted[q] from the camp of Dan are one hundred and fifty-seven thousand six hundred. They will set out last[r] according to their divisions.”

32 These were the ones counted of the Israelites[s] according to their families;[t] all those counted from the camps according to their divisions were six hundred and three thousand five hundred. 33 The Levites were not counted in the midst of the Israelites,[u] just as Yahweh commanded Moses.

34 And the Israelites[v] did everything that Yahweh commanded Moses. They encamped according to their standards, and they[w] set out each one according to their clans[x] among their families.[y]

Aaron’s Sons

These are the genealogies of Aaron and Moses at the time[z] when Yahweh spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai. These are the names of the descendants of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. These are the names of the descendants of Aaron, the priests, the anointed ones whom he consecrated as priests.[aa] Nadab and Abihu died before Yahweh[ab] when they presented a strange fire before Yahweh[ac] in the desert of Sinai, and they had no children.[ad] Eleazar and Ithamar served as priest during the presence of Aaron their father.

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “Bring near the tribe of Levi, and set the tribe[ae] before Aaron[af] the priest, and they will minister to him. They shall observe his duties and the duties of the entire community before the tent of assembly, to do the work of the tabernacle. And they will keep all the vessels of the tent of assembly and the responsibilities of the Israelites,[ag] to do the work[ah] of the tabernacle. You will give the Levites to Aaron and to his descendants; they are surely assigned to him from among the Israelites.[ai] 10 But you will count Aaron and his descendants; they will keep their priesthood, and the stranger[aj] who approaches will be put to death.”

11 Yahweh spoke to Moses saying, 12 “I myself receive the Levites from the midst of the Israelites[ak] in the place of all the firstborn of the offspring of the womb from the Israelites.[al] The Levites will be mine 13 because all the firstborn are mine; on the day of my killing all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated for myself all the firstborn in Israel, both humankind and animal;[am] they will be mine. I am Yahweh.”

14 Yahweh spoke to Moses in the desert of Sinai, saying, 15 “Muster[an] the descendants of Levi according to their families,[ao] according to their clans. You will count every male from one month[ap] and above.” 16 So Moses mustered[aq] them according to the command of Yahweh,[ar] just as he commanded. 17 These were the sons of Levi according to their names: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 18 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon according to their clans: Libni and Shimei. 19 And the sons of Kohath according to their clans: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. 20 The sons of Merari according to their tribes: Mahli and Mushi. These are the clans of the Levites according to their families.[as]

21 To Gershon belonged[at] the clan of the Libnites and the clan of the Shimeites; these are the clans of the Gershonites. 22 The ones counted[au] according to the number of every male from one month[av] and above were seven thousand five hundred. 23 The clans of the Gershonites will camp behind the tabernacle to the west, 24 and the leader of the family[aw] of the Gershonites is Eliasaph son of Lael. 25 And the responsibility of the descendants of Gershon in the tent of assembly is the tabernacle, and the tent covering it and the curtain of the doorway of the tent of the assembly, 26 and the hangings of the courtyard and the curtain of the doorway of the courtyard that is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its ten cords, all of its use.

27 To Kohath belonged[ax] the clan of Amramites,[ay] the clan of the Izharites,[az] the clan of the Hebronites,[ba] and the clan of the Uzzielites;[bb] these were the clans of the Kohathites.[bc] 28 According to the number of every male from one month[bd] and above there were eight thousand six hundred keeping the responsibility of the sanctuary. 29 The clan of the descendants of Kohath will encamp on the side of the tabernacle to the south. 30 The leader of his family[be] according to the clans of the Kohathites[bf] is Elizaphan the son of Uzziel. 31 Their responsibility was the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altar, and the vessels of the sanctuary, with which they ministered, and the curtain, and all of its use. 32 The chief of the leaders[bg] of the Levites[bh] was Eleazar son of Aaron the priest who had oversight of those keeping the responsibility of the sanctuary.

33 To Merari belonged[bi] the clan of Mahlites[bj] and the clan of the Mushites:[bk] these are the clans of Merari. 34 The ones counted[bl] according to the number of every male from one month[bm] and above were six thousand two hundred. 35 The leader of the family[bn] according to the clans of Merari is Zuriel son of Abihail; they will encamp of the side of the tabernacle to the north. 36 The responsibility of the sons of Merari was the supervision of the frames of the tabernacle, its bars, pillars, bases, and all its vessels and all its service, 37 and the pillars around the courtyard, and their bases, pegs, and cords.

38 Those encamped before the tabernacle to the east—before the tent of assembly to the east—were Moses and Aaron and his sons; they will keep the responsibility of the sanctuary for the Israelites;[bo] and the stranger[bp] who approaches will be put to death. 39 All those counted from the Levites whom Moses and Aaron mustered[bq] according to the word of Yahweh,[br] according to their clans, every male from one month[bs] and above were twenty-two thousand.

40 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Muster every firstborn male from the Israelites[bt] from one month[bu] and above and count[bv] their names. 41 And you will receive the Levites for me—I am Yahweh—in the place of all the firstborn among the Israelites,[bw] and the animals[bx] of the Levites in the place of all the firstborn among the animals[by] among the Israelites.”[bz] 42 So Moses mustered[ca] all the firstborn among the Israelites[cb] just as Yahweh commanded him. 43 And all the firstborn males[cc] among the number of names from one month[cd] and above, the ones counted,[ce] were twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventy-three.

44 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 45 “Receive the Levites in the place of all the firstborn among the Israelites,[cf] and the animals of the Levites in the place of their animals; the Levites will be mine. I am Yahweh. 46 And the ransom of the two hundred and seventy-three of the firstborn of the Israelites[cg] who are excessive over the Levites, 47 you will receive five shekels a person, in the sanctuary shekel; you will collect twenty gerahs[ch] per shekel. 48 You will give the money to Aaron, and to his sons the ransom of the ones who are excessive among them.” 49 And Moses received the money of the redemption from the ones who were excessive from those redeemed of the Levites. 50 From the firstborn of the Israelites[ci] he took the money, one thousand three hundred and sixty-five shekels, in the sanctuary shekel. 51 And Moses gave the money of the ransom to Aaron and to his sons according to the word[cj] of Yahweh just as Yahweh commanded Moses.

Mark 11:27-12:17

Jesus’ Authority Challenged

27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as[a] he was walking in the temple courts,[b] the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came up to him 28 and said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority that you do these things?” 29 So Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question. Answer me and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men? Answer me!” 31 And they began to discuss[c] this[d] with one another, saying, “What should we say?[e] If we say ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘From men’”—they were afraid of the crowd, because they all looked upon John as truly a prophet.[f] 33 And they replied to Jesus saying, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

The Parable of the Tenant Farmers in the Vineyard

12 And he began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard, and put a fence around it, and dug a trough for the winepress, and built a watchtower, and leased it to tenant farmers, and went on a journey. And he sent a slave to the tenant farmers at the proper time, so that he could collect some of the fruit of the vineyard from the tenant farmers. And they seized him and[g] beat him[h] and sent him[i] away empty-handed. And again he sent to them another slave, and that one they struck on the head and dishonored. And he sent another, and that one they killed. And he sent[j] many others, some of whom they beat and some of whom they killed. He had one more, a beloved son. Last of all he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenant farmers said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours!’ And they seized and[k] killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. What[l] will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenant farmers and give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not read this scripture:

‘The stone which the builders rejected,
    this has become the cornerstone.[m]
11 This came about from the Lord,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”[n]

12 And they were seeking to arrest him, and they were afraid of the crowd, because they knew that he had told the parable with reference to them. And they left him and[o] went away.

Paying Taxes to Caesar

13 And they sent some of the Pharisees and the Herodians to him so that they could catch him unawares in a statement. 14 And when they[p] came, they said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are truthful and you do not care what anyone thinks,[q] because you do not regard the opinion of people[r] but teach the way of God in truth. Is it permitted to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?” 15 But because he[s] knew their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius so that I can look at it!”[t] 16 So they brought one.[u] And he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” And they said to him, “Caesar’s.” 17 And Jesus said to them, “Give to Caesar the things of Caesar, and to God the things of God!” And they were utterly amazed at him.

Psalm 47

God Is King over All the Earth

For the music director. Of the sons of Korah. A psalm.[a]

47 All you peoples, clap your hands.[b]
Shout to God with a voice of rejoicing.
For Yahweh Most High is awesome,[c]
a great king over all the earth.
He subdues peoples under us
and nations under our feet.
He chooses for us our inheritance,
the pride of Jacob whom he loves.
God has gone up with a shout,
Yahweh with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises.
Sing praises to our king, sing praises.
For God is king of all the earth.
Sing praises with understanding.[d]
God reigns over nations;
God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples are gathered together
with the people of Abraham’s God.
For the shields of the earth belong to God.
He is very exalted.

Proverbs 10:24-25

24 The dread of the wicked will come upon him,
but the desire of the righteous will be granted.
25 With the passing of the tempest, there is no wickedness,
but the righteous have a foundation forever.
