Revised Geneva Translation (RGT)
Version
Genesis 3-4

Now the serpent was more cunning than any wild animal which the LORD God had made; and he said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

And the woman said to the serpent, “We eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden.

“But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat of it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’”

Then the serpent said to the woman, “You shall not die at all.

“But, God knows that when you shall eat thereof, your eyes shall be opened; and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”6 So the woman (seeing that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired, to get knowledge) took of the fruit thereof and ate; and also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

Then, the eyes of them both were opened; and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig tree leaves together and made themselves coverings.

Afterward, they heard the voice of the LORD God, walking in the garden in the cool of the day. And the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God, among the trees of the garden.

But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”

10 Who said, “I heard Your voice in the garden and was afraid, because I was naked. Therefore, I hid myself.”

11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree whereof I commanded you that you should not eat?”

12 Then the man said, “The woman, which You gave to be with me, she gave to me from the tree, and I ate.”

13 And the LORD God said to the woman, “Why have you done this?” And the woman said, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate.”

14 Then the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all cattle, and above every wild animal. Upon your belly you shall go; and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.

15 “I will also put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He shall break your head and you shall bruise His heel.”

16 To the woman, He said, “I will greatly increase your sorrows and your conceptions. In sorrow you shall bring forth children. And your desire shall be subject to your husband. And he shall rule over you.”

17 Also, He said to Adam, “Because you have obeyed the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree (whereof I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’), the earth is cursed for your sake. In sorrow you shall eat from it, all the days of your life.

18 “Also, it shall bring forth thorns and thistles to you. And you shall eat the herb of the field.

19 “In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, until you return to the earth. For out of it you were taken because you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

20 And the man called his wife’s name “Eve”, because she was the mother of all living.

21 Also, to Adam and to his wife, the LORD God made coats of skins, and clothed them.

22 And the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become as one of us, knowing good and evil. And now, lest he also put forth his hand and take and eat of the Tree of Life, and live forever…”

23 Therefore, the LORD God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden, to till the earth from where he was taken.

24 Thus, He cast out the man; and at the east side of the Garden of Eden, He set the Cherubims, and the blade of a shaken sword, to keep the way of the Tree of Life.

Afterward, the man knew Eve, his wife. Who conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have obtained a man by the LORD.”

And again, she brought forth his brother, Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep; and Cain was a tiller of the ground.

And in process of time, it happened that Cain brought an oblation to the LORD from the fruit of the ground.

And Abel also brought one from the firstfruits of his sheep (and from the fat of them). And the LORD had respect toward Abel, and to his offering.

But to Cain and to his offering He had no regard. Therefore, Cain was exceedingly angry; and his face was cast down.

Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why is your face cast down?

“If you do well, shall you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. Also, his desire shall be subject to you; and you shall rule over him.”

Then Cain spoke to Abel, his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.

Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel, your brother?” He answered, “I cannot tell. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10 Again He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the earth.

11 “Therefore, you are now cursed from the earth, which has opened her mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

12 “From now on, when you shall till the ground, it shall not yield her strength to you. A vagabond and a fugitive shall you be on the Earth.”

13 Then Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.

14 “Behold, You have cast me out from the Earth today. And I shall be hidden from Your face and shall be a vagabond and a fugitive on the Earth. And whoever finds me shall kill me.”

15 Then the LORD said to him, “Doubtless, whoever kills Cain, he shall be punished sevenfold.” And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any man finding him should kill him.

16 Then Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and dwelt in the land of Nod, toward the east side of Eden.

17 Cain also knew his wife, who conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city and called the name of the city by the name of his son, Enoch.

18 And to Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begat Mehujael; and Mehujael begat Methushael; and Methushael begat Lamech.

19 ¶ And Lamech took to him two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

20 And Adah bore Jabal, who was the father of those who dwell in the tents, and of those who have cattle.

21 And his brother’s name was Jubal, who was the father of all who play on the harp and organs.

22 And Zillah also bore Tubal-Cain, who wrought cunningly every craft of brass and of iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.

23 Then Lamech said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, “Hear my voice, you wives of Lamech. Listen my speech. For I would kill a man for wounding me, and a young man who hurts me.

24 “If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy times sevenfold.”

25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son. And she called his name Seth. “For God,” said she, “has appointed another seed to me, to replace Abel, because Cain killed him.”

26 And to the same Seth there was also born a son. And he called his name “Enosh”. Then men began to call upon the Name of the LORD.

Matthew 2:13-3:6

13 After their departure, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, and take the Child and His mother, and flee into Egypt. And stay there until I bring you word. For Herod will seek the Child to destroy Him.”

14 So he arose and took the Child and His mother by night and departed into Egypt.

15 And they were there until the death of Herod, so that which was spoken from the Lord by the prophet might be fulfilled, which says, “Out of Egypt have I called my Son.”

16 Then Herod, seeing that he had been mocked by the wise men, was exceedingly enraged. And he sent forth and had put to death all the male children in Bethlehem and the surrounding territory who were two years old and under (according to the time which he had carefully determined from the wise men).

17 Then that which was spoken by the Prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled, which says,

18 “A voice was heard in Ramah - mourning and weeping and howling greatly - Rachel weeping for her children. And she would not be comforted, because they were no more.”

19 And when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in Egypt, in a dream,

20 saying, “Arise. And take the Child and His mother. And go into the land of Israel. For those who sought the Child’s life are dead.”

21 Then he rose up, and took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.

22 But when he heard that Archelaus reigned in Judea (instead of his father Herod) he was afraid to go there. But after he was warned by God in a dream, he withdrew into the parts of Galilee.

23 And he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, so that which was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, which says that He would be “called a Nazarite.”

And in those days, John the Baptist came and preached in the wilderness of Judea,

and said, “Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!”

For this is he of whom it is spoken by the Prophet Isaiah, saying, “The voice of him who cries in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord! Make His paths straight!’”

And this John had his garment of camel’s hair, and a girdle of a skin around his loins. Also, his food was locusts and wild honey.

Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region around Jordan went out to him.

And they were baptized by him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

Psalm 2

Why do the heathen rage, and the people murmur in vain?

The kings of the Earth stand together. And the Princes are assembled together against the LORD, and against His Christ.

Let us break their bands and cast their cords from us.

But he who dwells in the heavens shall laugh. The LORD shall hold them in derision.

Then shall He speak to them in His wrath, and vex them in His sore displeasure, saying,

“I have set My King upon Zion, My Holy Mountain.”

“I will declare the decree. The LORD has said to me, ‘You are My Son. This day have I begotten You.

“Ask of Me, and I shall give You the heathen for Your inheritance, and the ends of the Earth for Your possession.

“You shall crush them with a scepter of iron; and break them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.’”

10 Be wise now, therefore, you kings. Be learned, you judges of the Earth.

11 Serve the LORD in fear; and rejoice in trembling.

12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish on the way when His wrath shall suddenly burn. Blessed are all who trust in Him. A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.

Proverbs 1:7-9

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

My son, hear your father’s instruction, and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

For they shall be a comely ornament for your head, and as chains for your neck.
