Jeremiah 35-36

35 The Word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, in the days of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying,

“Go to the House of the Rechabites, and speak to them, and bring them into the House of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.”

Then I took Jaazaniah, the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole House of the Rechabites,

and I brought them into the House of the LORD, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah, the son of Shallum, the keeper of the treasure.

And I set pots full of wine and cups before the sons of the House of the Rechabites, and said to them, “Drink wine.”

But they said, “We will drink no wine. For Jonadab, the son of Rechab our father, commanded us, saying, ‘You shall drink no wine, neither you nor your sons, forever.

‘Nor shall you build house or sow seed or plant vineyard or have any of them. But you shall dwell in tents all your days, so that you may live a long time in the land where you are strangers.’

“Thus we have obeyed the voice of Jonadab, the son of Rechab our father, in all that he has charged us. And we never drink wine, neither we, our wives, our sons nor our daughters.

“Nor do we build houses for us to dwell in, nor do we have vineyard or field or seed.

10 “But we have remained in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.

11 “But when Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, came up into the land, we said, ‘Come and let us go to Jerusalem, for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and of the army of Aram.’ So we dwell in Jerusalem.”

12 Then came the Word of the LORD to Jeremiah, saying,

13 “Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, “Will you not receive doctrine to obey My Words,” says the LORD?

14 ‘The commandment of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons—that they should drink no wine—is surely kept. For to this day they drink none and obey their father’s commandment. Nevertheless, I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, but you would not obey Me.

15 ‘I have also sent all My servants the Prophets to you, rising up early and sending, saying, “Turn now every man from his evil way, and amend your works, and do not go after other gods, to serve them. And you shall dwell in the land which I have given to you, and to your fathers.” But you would not incline your ear, nor obey Me.

16 ‘Surely the sons of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, have kept the commandment of their father, which he gave them. But this people has not obeyed Me.’

17 “Therefore thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will bring upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, all the misery that I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them but they would not hear. And I have called to them, but they would not answer.’”

18 And Jeremiah said to the House of the Rechabites, “Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according to all that he has commanded you,

19 ‘therefore thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: “Jonadab, the son of Rechab, shall not lack a man to stand before Me, forever.”’”

36 And in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, came this Word to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

“Take a scroll of a Book and write in it all the Words that I have spoken to you against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day that I spoke to you (from the days of Josiah) to this day.

“It may be that the House of Judah will hear of all the misery which I determined to bring to them, so that everyone may turn from his evil way, so that I may forgive their iniquity and their sins.”

Then Jeremiah called Baruch, the son of Neriah. And Jeremiah dictated, and Baruch wrote down, all the Words of the LORD which He had spoken to Jeremiah upon a scroll of a Book.

And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, “I am detained, and cannot go into the House of the LORD.

“Therefore, you go and read the scroll which I have dictated and you have written, the Words of the LORD, in the audience of the people in the LORD’s House, upon the fasting day. Also, you shall read them within the hearing of all Judah who come from their cities.

“It may be that they will pray before the LORD, and everyone will turn from his evil way. For great is the anger and the wrath that the LORD has declared against this people.”

So Baruch, the son of Neriah, did according to all that Jeremiah the Prophet commanded him, reading the Words of the LORD from the Book in the LORD’s House.

And in the fifth year of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people who came to Jerusalem from the cities of Judah.

10 Then Baruch read the words of Jeremiah from the Book, in the House of the LORD, in the chamber of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan the Secretary, in the higher court at the entry of the New Gate of the LORD’s House, within the hearing of all the people.

11 When Michaiah, the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard all the Words of the LORD from the Book,

12 then, he went down to the king’s house, into the Chancellor’s chamber. And lo, all the princes sat there: Elishama the Chancellor, Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, Elnathan the son of Achbor, Gemariah the son of Shaphan, Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes.

13 Then Michaiah declared to them all the Words that he had heard when Baruch read from the Book in the audience of the people.

14 Therefore, all the princes sent Jehudi, the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, “Take the scroll in your hand from which you have read in the audience of the people, and come.” So, Baruch, the son of Neriah, took the scroll in his hand and came to them.

15 And they said to him, “Sit down, now, and read it, so that we may hear.” So, Baruch read it, and revealed it to them.

16 Now when they had heard all the Words, they turned in fear to one another, and said to Baruch, “We will surely declare to the king all of these Words!”

17 And they examined Baruch, saying, “Tell us, now, how did you write all these Words — from his mouth?”

18 Then Baruch answered them, “He dictated all these Words to me with his mouth, and I wrote them in the Book with ink.”

19 Then the princes said to Baruch, “Go and hide, you and Jeremiah. And do not let anyone know where you are.”

20 And they went in to the king, to the court. But they stored the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the Chancellor, and told the king all the Words, so that he might hear.

21 So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the scroll. And he took it out of Elishama the Chancellor’s chamber. And Jehudi read it in the hearing of the king, and in the audience of all the princes who stood beside the king.

22 Now the king sat in the winter house, in the ninth month. And there was a fire burning before him.

23 And when Jehudi had read three or four columns, he cut it with the sheath and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until the whole scroll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.

24 Yet they were not afraid and did not tear their garments, neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these Words.

25 Nevertheless, Elnathan, Delaiah and Gemariah had implored the king not to burn the scroll. But he would not hear them.

26 Rather, the king commanded Jerahmeel, the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah, the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah, the son of Abdeel, to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the Prophet. But the LORD hid them.

27 Then the Word of the LORD came to Jeremiah (after the king had burnt the scroll and the Words that Jeremiah had dictated to Baruch) saying,

28 “Again, take another scroll. And write in it all the former Words that were in the first scroll which Jehoiakim, the king of Judah, has burnt.

29 “And you shall say to Jehoiakim, king of Judah, ‘Thus says the LORD: “You have burnt this scroll, saying, ‘Why have you written in it, saying that the king of Babel shall certainly come and destroy this land and shall cause man and beast to cease from there?’”

30 ‘Therefore thus says the LORD of Jehoiakim, king of Judah: “He shall have no one to sit upon the throne of David. And his dead body shall be cast out in the heat of the day and to the frost of the night.

31 “And I will visit him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity. And I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the misery that I have pronounced against them. But they would not hear.”’”

32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote in it, from the dictation of Jeremiah, all the Words of the Book which Jehoiakim, king of Judah, had burnt in the fire. And many similar Words were also added to them.

1 Timothy 5

Do not rebuke an elder, but encourage him as a father, and the younger men as brothers;

the elder women as mothers, the younger as sisters, with all pureness.

Honor widows which are truly widows.

But if any widow has children or nephews, let them learn first to show godliness toward their own house, and to repay their family. For that is an honorable thing, and acceptable before God.

And she who is a true widow, and left alone, trusts in God, and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.

But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.

Therefore, warn them of these things, so that they may be blameless.

If there is anyone who does not look out for his own, and namely for those of his household, he denies the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Do not let a widow under 60 years old be registered; who has been the wife of one husband

10 and has a reputation for good works (whether she has nourished her children, taken in strangers, washed the saints’ feet, ministered to those who were in adversity, and if she has constantly pursued every good work).

11 But refuse the younger widows. For when their desires begin to draw them away from Christ, they will marry,

12 having damnation because they have broken their first faith.

13 And also, being idle, they learn to go about from house to house. Indeed, not only are they idle, but also gossips and busybodies, speaking things which are not necessary.

14 Therefore, I desire that the younger women marry, and bear children, and govern the house, and give no opportunity for the adversary to speak evil.

15 For some have already turned back after Satan.

16 If any faithful man or faithful woman has widows, let them minister to them, and do not let the Church be charged, so that there may be enough for those who are true widows.

17 Let the elders who rule well have double the honor, especially those who labor in the Word and doctrine.

18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treads out the corn,” and, “The laborer is worthy of his wages.”

19 Receive no accusation against an elder unless by two or three witnesses.

20 Rebuke those who sin openly, so that the rest may also fear.

21 I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels to observe these things, without preferring one to another. And do nothing with partiality.

22 Do not quickly lay hands on anyone or share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.

23 Drink water no longer. But use a little wine for your stomach’s sake, and your frequent infirmities.

24 Some men’s sins are evident, preceding them to judgment. But some follow afterward.

25 Likewise, good works are also evident beforehand. And those which are otherwise cannot be hidden.

Psalm 89:14-37

14 Righteousness and equity are the establishment of Your throne. Mercy and truth go before Your face.

15 Blessed is the people who can rejoice in You. They shall walk in the light of Your countenance, O LORD.

16 They shall rejoice continually in Your Name; and in Your righteousness they shall exalt themselves.

17 For You are the glory of their strength; and by Your favor our horns shall be exalted.

18 For our shield belongs to the LORD, and our King to the Holy One of Israel.

19 You spoke, then, in a vision to Your holy one, and said, “I have laid help upon one who is mighty. I have exalted one chosen out of the people.

20 “I have found David, My servant. With My holy oil have I anointed him.

21 “Therefore, My hand shall be established with him and My arm shall strengthen him.

22 “The enemy shall not oppress him, nor shall the wicked hurt him.

23 “But I will destroy his foes before his face and plague those who hate him.

24 “My truth also, and My mercy, shall be with him; and in My Name shall his horn be exalted.

25 “I will also set his hand in the sea, and his right hand in the floods.

26 “He shall cry to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’

27 “Also, I will make him My firstborn, higher than the kings of the Earth.

28 “I will keep My mercy for him for evermore; and My Covenant shall stand fast with him.

29 “I will also make his Seed endure forever, and his Throne as the days of Heaven.

30 “If his children forsake My Law and do not walk in My Judgments,

31 “if they break my statutes and do not keep My Commandments,

32 “then I will visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with strokes.

33 “Yet, I will not take My lovingkindness from him, nor will I falsify My truth.

34 “Nor will I break My Covenant, nor alter the thing that has gone out of My lips.

35 “I have sworn once, by My holiness, that I will not fail David.

36 “His Seed shall endure forever; and his Throne shall be as the Sun before Me.

37 “He shall be established forevermore as the Moon, and as a faithful witness in the heaven.” Selah.

Proverbs 25:25-27

25 As are cold waters to a weary soul, so is good news from a far country.

26 A righteous man faltering before the wicked is like a polluted well and a corrupt spring.

27 It is not good to eat much honey; just as it is no glory to seek one’s own glory.
