Israel’s Last Days
48 Now it came about after these things that [a]Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is sick.” So he took his two sons (A)Manasseh and Ephraim with him. 2 When [b]it was told to Jacob, “Behold, your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel [c]collected his strength and sat [d]up in the bed. 3 Then Jacob said to Joseph, “[e](B)God Almighty appeared to me at (C)Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, 4 and He said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and numerous, and I will make you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your [f]descendants after you for (D)an everlasting possession.’ 5 Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; (E)Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as (F)Reuben and Simeon are. 6 But your offspring that [g]have been born after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the [h]names of their brothers in their inheritance. 7 Now as for me, when I came from (G)Paddan, (H)Rachel died, [i]to my sorrow, in the land of Canaan on the journey, when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”
8 When Israel (I)saw Joseph’s sons, he said, “Who are these?” 9 Joseph said to his father, “(J)They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” So he said, “Bring them to me, please, that (K)I may bless them.” 10 Now (L)the eyes of Israel were so dim from age that he could not see. Then [j]Joseph brought them close to him, and he (M)kissed them and embraced them. 11 Israel said to Joseph, “I never [k]expected to see your face, and behold, God has let me see your [l]children as well.” 12 Then Joseph [m]took them from his knees, and (N)bowed with his face to the ground. 13 Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right, and brought them close to him. 14 But Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, [n]crossing his hands, [o]although (O)Manasseh was the firstborn. 15 He blessed Joseph, and said,
“(P)The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
(Q)The God who has been my shepherd [p]all my life to this day,
16 (R)The angel who has redeemed me from all evil,
(S)Bless the lads;
And may my name [q]live on in them,
And the [r]names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
And (T)may they grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”
17 When Joseph saw that his father (U)laid his right hand on Ephraim’s head, it displeased him; and he grasped his father’s hand to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn. Place your right hand on his head.” 19 But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know; he also will become a people and he also will be great. However, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and (V)his [s]descendants shall become a [t]multitude of nations.” 20 (W)He blessed them that day, saying,
“By you Israel will pronounce blessing, saying,
‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh!’”
Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh. 21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am about to die, but (X)God will be with you, and (Y)bring you back to the land of your fathers. 22 I give you one [u]portion more than your brothers, (Z)which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow.”
Israel’s Prophecy concerning His Sons
49 Then Jacob summoned his sons and said, “Assemble yourselves that I may tell you what will befall you (AA)in the [v]days to come.
2 “Gather together and hear, O sons of Jacob;
And (AB)listen to Israel your father.
3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn;
My might and (AC)the beginning of my strength,
[w]Preeminent in dignity and [x]preeminent in power.
4 “[y]Uncontrolled as water, you shall not have preeminence,
(AD)Because you went up to your father’s bed;
Then you defiled it—he went up to my couch.
5 “(AE)Simeon and Levi are brothers;
Their swords are implements of violence.
6 “(AF)Let my soul not enter into their council;
Let not my glory be united with their assembly;
Because in their anger they slew [z]men,
And in their self-will they lamed [aa]oxen.
7 “Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;
And their wrath, for it is cruel.
(AG)I will [ab]disperse them in Jacob,
And scatter them in Israel.
8 “Judah, your brothers shall praise you;
Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
(AH)Your father’s sons shall bow down to you.
9 “Judah is a (AI)lion’s whelp;
From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
(AJ)He [ac]couches, he lies down as a lion,
And as a [ad]lion, who [ae]dares rouse him up?
10 “(AK)The scepter shall not depart from Judah,
Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
[af]Until Shiloh comes,
And (AL)to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
11 “[ag](AM)He ties his foal to the vine,
And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine;
(AN)He washes his garments in wine,
And his robes in the blood of grapes.
12 “His eyes are [ah]dull from wine,
And his teeth [ai]white from milk.
13 “(AO)Zebulun will dwell at the seashore;
And he shall be [aj]a haven for ships,
And his flank shall be toward Sidon.
14 “Issachar is [ak]a strong donkey,
(AP)Lying down between the [al]sheepfolds.
15 “When he saw that a resting place was good
And that the land was pleasant,
He bowed his shoulder to bear burdens,
And became a slave at forced labor.
16 “(AQ)Dan shall (AR)judge his people,
As one of the tribes of Israel.
17 “Dan shall be a serpent in the way,
A horned snake in the path,
That bites the horse’s heels,
So that his rider falls backward.
18 “(AS)For Your salvation I wait, O Lord.
21 “(AW)Naphtali is a doe let loose,
He gives beautiful words.
22 “(AX)Joseph is a fruitful [ar]bough,
A fruitful [as]bough by a spring;
Its [at]branches run over a wall.
23 “The archers bitterly attacked him,
And shot at him and harassed him;
24 But his (AY)bow remained [au]firm,
And [av](AZ)his arms were agile,
From the hands of the (BA)Mighty One of Jacob
(From there is (BB)the Shepherd, (BC)the Stone of Israel),
25 From (BD)the God of your father who helps you,
And [aw](BE)by the [ax]Almighty who blesses you
With (BF)blessings of heaven above,
Blessings of the deep that lies beneath,
Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
26 “The blessings of your father
Have surpassed the blessings of my ancestors
Up to the [ay]utmost bound of (BG)the everlasting hills;
May they be on the head of Joseph,
And on the crown of the head of the one distinguished among his brothers.
27 “Benjamin is a [az]ravenous wolf;
In the morning he devours the prey,
And in the evening he divides the spoil.”
28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them [ba]when he blessed them. He blessed them, every one [bb]with the blessing appropriate to him. 29 Then he charged them and said to them, “I am about to be (BH)gathered to my people; (BI)bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in (BJ)the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the (BK)cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field from Ephron the Hittite for a [bc]burial site. 31 There they buried (BL)Abraham and his wife (BM)Sarah, there they buried (BN)Isaac and his wife Rebekah, and there I buried Leah— 32 the field and the cave that is in it, purchased from the sons of Heth.” 33 When Jacob finished charging his sons, he drew his feet into the bed and (BO)breathed his last, and was (BP)gathered to his people.
Healing Crowds
29 (A)Departing from there, Jesus went along by (B)the Sea of Galilee, and having gone up on the mountain, He was sitting there. 30 And [a]large crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and (C)He healed them. 31 So the crowd marveled as they saw the mute speaking, the crippled [b]restored, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they (D)glorified the God of Israel.
Four Thousand Fed
32 (E)And Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, “(F)I feel compassion for the [c]people, because they [d]have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.” 33 The disciples *said to Him, “Where would we get so many loaves in this desolate place to satisfy such a large crowd?” 34 And Jesus *said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” 35 And He directed the [e]people to [f]sit down on the ground; 36 and He took the seven loaves and the fish; and (G)giving thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 37 And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, seven large (H)baskets full. 38 And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.
39 And sending away the crowds, Jesus got into (I)the boat and came to the region of (J)Magadan.
Pharisees Test Jesus
16 (K)The (L)Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus, they (M)asked Him to show them a [g]sign from heaven. 2 But He replied to them, “[h](N)When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ 3 And in the morning, ‘There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ (O)Do you know how to discern the [i]appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times? 4 (P)An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a [j]sign; and a [k]sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah.” And He left them and went away.
5 And the disciples came to the other side of the sea, but they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 And Jesus said to them, “Watch out and (Q)beware of the [l]leaven of the (R)Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 They began to discuss this among themselves, saying, “He said that because we did not bring any bread.” 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, “(S)You men of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves that you have no bread? 9 Do you not yet understand or remember (T)the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets full you picked up? 10 Or (U)the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many large baskets full you picked up? 11 How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But (V)beware of the [m]leaven of the (W)Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the (X)Pharisees and Sadducees.
Prayer for Victory over Enemies.
For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
20 May the Lord answer you (A)in the day of trouble!
May the (B)name of the (C)God of Jacob set you securely on high!
2 May He send you help (D)from the sanctuary
And (E)support you from Zion!
3 May He (F)remember all your meal offerings
And (G)find your burnt offering [a]acceptable! [b]Selah.
4 May He grant you your (H)heart’s desire
And (I)fulfill all your [c]counsel!
5 [d]We will (J)sing for joy over your [e]victory,
And in the name of our God we will (K)set up our banners.
May the Lord (L)fulfill all your petitions.
6 Now (M)I know that the Lord saves His anointed;
He will (N)answer him from His holy heaven
With the [f](O)saving strength of His right hand.
7 Some [g]boast in chariots and some in (P)horses,
But (Q)we [h]will boast in the name of the Lord, our God.
8 They have (R)bowed down and fallen,
But we have (S)risen and stood upright.
9 [i](T)Save, O Lord;
May the (U)King answer us in the day we call.
20 My son, (A)give attention to my words;
(B)Incline your ear to my sayings.
21 (C)Do not let them depart from your sight;
(D)Keep them in the midst of your heart.
22 For they are (E)life to those who find them
And (F)health to all [a]their body.
23 Watch over your heart with all diligence,
For (G)from it flow the springs of life.
24 Put away from you a (H)deceitful mouth
And (I)put devious [b]speech far from you.
25 Let your eyes look directly ahead
And let your [c]gaze be fixed straight in front of you.
26 (J)Watch the path of your feet
And all your (K)ways will be established.
27 (L)Do not turn to the right nor to the left;
(M)Turn your foot from evil.
