Genesis 50:1 - Exodus 2:10

The Death of Israel

50 Then Joseph fell on his father’s face, and wept over him and kissed him. Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians (A)embalmed Israel. Now forty days were [a]required for [b]it, for [c]such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians (B)wept for him seventy days.

When the days of [d]mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak [e]to Pharaoh, saying, (C)My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am about to die; in my grave (D)which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’” Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”

So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt, and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father’s household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen. There also went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and it was a very great company. 10 When they came to the [f]threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they (E)lamented there with a very great and [g]sorrowful lamentation; and he [h]observed seven days mourning for his father. 11 Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at [i]the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a [j]grievous [k]mourning for the Egyptians.” Therefore it was named [l]Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

Burial at Machpelah

12 Thus his sons did for him as he had charged them; 13 for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in (F)the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field for a [m]burial site from Ephron the Hittite. 14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.

15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “(G)What if Joseph bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him!” 16 So they [n]sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father charged before he died, saying, 17 ‘Thus you shall say to Joseph, “Please forgive, I beg you, the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong.”’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18 Then his brothers also came and (H)fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in God’s place? 20 As for you, (I)you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about [o]this present result, to preserve many people alive. 21 So therefore, do not be afraid; (J)I will provide for you and your little ones.” So he comforted them and spoke [p]kindly to them.

Death of Joseph

22 Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father’s household, and Joseph lived one hundred and ten years. 23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were (K)born on Joseph’s knees. 24 Joseph said to his brothers, “(L)I am about to die, but God will surely [q]take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He [r]promised on oath to (M)Abraham, to (N)Isaac and to (O)Jacob.” 25 Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely [s]take care of you, and (P)you shall carry my bones up from here.” 26 So Joseph died at the age of one hundred and ten years; and [t]he was (Q)embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt.

Israel Multiplies in Egypt

Now these are the (R)names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob; they came each one [u]with his household: Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah; Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin; Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. All the [v]persons who came from the loins of Jacob were (S)seventy [w]in number, but Joseph was already in Egypt. (T)Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. But the sons of Israel (U)were fruitful and [x]increased greatly, and multiplied, and became exceedingly [y]mighty, so that the land was filled with them.

Now a new (V)king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. (W)He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are [z]more and mightier than we. 10 Come, let us (X)deal wisely with them, or else they will multiply and [aa]in the event of war, they will also join themselves to those who hate us, and fight against us and [ab]depart from the land.” 11 So they appointed (Y)taskmasters over them to afflict them with [ac](Z)hard labor. And they built for Pharaoh (AA)storage cities, Pithom and (AB)Raamses. 12 But the more they afflicted them, (AC)the more they multiplied and the more they [ad]spread out, so that they were in dread of the sons of Israel. 13 The Egyptians compelled the sons of Israel (AD)to labor rigorously; 14 and they made (AE)their lives bitter with hard labor in mortar and bricks and at all kinds of labor in the field, all their labors which they rigorously [ae]imposed on them.

15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom [af]was named Shiphrah and the other [ag]was named Puah; 16 and he said, “When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birthstool, (AF)if it is a son, then you shall put him to death; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.” 17 But the midwives [ah](AG)feared God, and (AH)did not do as the king of Egypt had [ai]commanded them, but let the boys live. 18 So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and let the boys live?” 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife [aj]can get to them.” 20 So (AI)God was good to the midwives, and (AJ)the people multiplied, and became very [ak]mighty. 21 Because the midwives [al](AK)feared God, He [am](AL)established [an]households for them. 22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “(AM)Every son who is born [ao]you are to cast into (AN)the Nile, and every daughter you are to keep alive.”

The Birth of Moses

Now a man from (AO)the house of Levi went and [ap]married a daughter of Levi. The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw [aq]that he was [ar](AP)beautiful, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a [as](AQ)wicker [at]basket and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and set it among the (AR)reeds by the bank of the Nile. (AS)His sister stood at a distance to [au]find out what would [av]happen to him.

The daughter of Pharaoh came down (AT)to bathe at the Nile, with her maidens walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the [aw]basket among the reeds and sent her maid, and she brought it to her. When she opened it, she [ax]saw the child, and behold, the [ay]boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call [az]a nurse for you from the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for you?” Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go ahead.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter and (AU)he became her son. And she named him [ba]Moses, and said, “Because I [bb]drew him out of the water.”

Matthew 16:13-17:9

Peter’s Confession of Christ

13 (A)Now when Jesus came into the district of (B)Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that (C)the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say (D)John the Baptist; and others, [a](E)Elijah; but still others, [b]Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” 15 He *said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are [c](F)the Christ, (G)the Son of (H)the living God.” 17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, (I)Simon [d]Barjona, because (J)flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 I also say to you that you are [e](K)Peter, and upon this [f]rock I will build My church; and the gates of (L)Hades will not overpower it. 19 I will give you (M)the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and (N)whatever you bind on earth [g]shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth [h]shall have been loosed in heaven.” 20 (O)Then He [i]warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was [j](P)the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death

21 (Q)From that time [k]Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and (R)suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. 22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “[l]God forbid it, Lord! This shall never [m]happen to You.” 23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, (S)Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on [n]God’s interests, but man’s.”

Discipleship Is Costly

24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and (T)take up his cross and follow Me. 25 For (U)whoever wishes to save his [o]life will lose it; but whoever loses his [p]life for My sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the (V)Son of Man (W)is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and (X)will then [q]repay every man according to his [r]deeds.

28 “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the (Y)Son of Man (Z)coming in His kingdom.”

The Transfiguration

17 (AA)Six days later Jesus *took with Him (AB)Peter and [s]James and John his brother, and *led them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, (AC)I will make three [t]tabernacles here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, (AD)a voice out of the cloud said, “(AE)This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell [u]face down to the ground and were terrified. And Jesus came to them and touched them and said, “Get up, and (AF)do not be afraid.” And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus Himself alone.

(AG)As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, (AH)Tell the vision to no one until (AI)the Son of Man has (AJ)risen from the dead.”

Psalm 21

Praise for Deliverance.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

21 O Lord, in Your strength the king will (A)be glad,
And in Your [a]salvation how greatly he will rejoice!
You have (B)given him his heart’s desire,
And You have not withheld the request of his lips. [b]Selah.
For You (C)meet him with the blessings of good things;
You set a (D)crown of fine gold on his head.
He asked life of You,
You (E)gave it to him,
(F)Length of days forever and ever.
His (G)glory is great through Your [c]salvation,
(H)Splendor and majesty You place upon him.
For You make him [d]most (I)blessed forever;
You make him joyful (J)with gladness in Your presence.

For the king (K)trusts in the Lord,
And through the lovingkindness of the Most High (L)he will not be shaken.
Your hand will (M)find out all your enemies;
Your right hand will find out those who hate you.
You will make them (N)as a fiery oven in the time [e]of your anger;
The Lord will (O)swallow them up in His wrath,
And (P)fire will devour them.
10 Their [f]offspring You will destroy from the earth,
And their [g](Q)descendants from among the sons of men.
11 Though they [h](R)intended evil against You
And (S)devised a plot,
They will not succeed.
12 For You will (T)make them turn their back;
You will [i]aim (U)with Your bowstrings at their faces.
13 Be exalted, O Lord, in Your strength;
We will (V)sing and praise Your power.

Proverbs 5:1-6

Pitfalls of Immorality

My son, (A)give attention to my wisdom,
(B)Incline your ear to my understanding;
That you may (C)observe discretion
And your (D)lips may reserve knowledge.
For the lips of an [a](E)adulteress (F)drip honey
And (G)smoother than oil is her [b]speech;
But in the end she is (H)bitter as wormwood,
(I)Sharp as a two-edged sword.
Her feet (J)go down to death,
Her steps take hold of Sheol.
[c]She does not ponder the (K)path of life;
Her ways are (L)unstable, she (M)does not know it.
