Exodus 2:11-3:22

11 Now it came about in those days, (A)when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his brethren and looked on their [a](B)hard labors; and (C)he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 So he [b]looked this way and that, and when he saw there was no one around, he (D)struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 He went out (E)the next day, and behold, two Hebrews were [c]fighting with each other; and he said to the [d]offender, “Why are you striking your companion?” 14 But he said, “(F)Who made you a [e]prince or a judge over us? Are you [f]intending to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and said, “Surely the matter has become known.”

Moses Escapes to Midian

15 When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he tried to kill Moses. But (G)Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh and [g]settled in the land of Midian, and he sat down (H)by a well.

16 Now (I)the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and (J)they came to draw water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock. 17 Then the shepherds came and drove them away, but (K)Moses stood up and helped them and watered their flock. 18 When they came to (L)Reuel their father, he said, “Why have you come back so soon today?” 19 So they said, “An Egyptian delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and what is more, he even drew the water for us and watered the flock.” 20 He said to his daughters, “Where is he then? Why is it that you have left the man behind? Invite him [h]to have something to eat.” 21 (M)Moses was willing to dwell with the man, and he gave his daughter (N)Zipporah to Moses. 22 Then she gave birth to (O)a son, and he named him [i]Gershom, for he said, “I have been (P)a [j]sojourner in a foreign land.”

23 Now it came about in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel (Q)sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out; and (R)their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God. 24 So (S)God heard their groaning; and God remembered (T)His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 25 (U)God saw the sons of Israel, and God [k]took notice of them.

The Burning Bush

Now Moses was pasturing the flock of (V)Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the [l]west side of the wilderness and came to (W)Horeb, the (X)mountain of God. (Y)The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of [m]a (Z)bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed. So Moses said, “[n](AA)I must turn aside now and see this [o]marvelous sight, why the bush is not burned up.” When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, (AB)God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Do not come near here; (AC)remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” He said also, “(AD)I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” (AE)Then Moses hid his face, for he was (AF)afraid to look at God.

The Lord said, “I have surely (AG)seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt, and have given heed to their cry because of their taskmasters, for I am aware of their sufferings. So I have come down (AH)to deliver them from the [p]power of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a (AI)good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of (AJ)the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. Now, behold, (AK)the cry of the sons of Israel has come to Me; furthermore, I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians are oppressing them.

The Mission of Moses

10 Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, (AL)so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, “(AM)Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 And He said, “Certainly (AN)I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: (AO)when you have brought the people out of Egypt, (AP)you shall [q]worship God at this mountain.”

13 Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “[r](AQ)I AM WHO [s]I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘[t]I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 God, furthermore, said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘(AR)The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is My (AS)memorial-name [u]to all generations. 16 Go and (AT)gather the elders of Israel together and say to them, ‘(AU)The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, “[v](AV)I am indeed concerned about you and what has been done to you in Egypt. 17 So (AW)I said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of (AX)the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite, to a land (AY)flowing with milk and honey.”’ 18 (AZ)They will [w]pay heed to what you say; and (BA)you with the elders of Israel will come to the king of Egypt and you will say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. So now, please, let us go a (BB)three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt (BC)will not permit you to go, (BD)except [x]under compulsion. 20 So I will stretch out (BE)My hand and strike Egypt with all My (BF)miracles which I shall do in the midst of it; and (BG)after that he will let you go. 21 I will grant this people (BH)favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and it shall be that when you go, you will not go empty-handed. 22 But every woman (BI)shall ask of her neighbor and the woman who lives in her house, articles of silver and articles of gold, and clothing; and you will put them on your sons and daughters. Thus you will (BJ)plunder the Egyptians.”

Matthew 17:10-27

10 And His disciples asked Him, “Why then do the scribes say that (A)Elijah must come first?” 11 And He answered and said, “Elijah is coming and will restore all things; 12 but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did [a]to him whatever they wished. So also (B)the Son of Man is going to suffer [b]at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist.

The Demoniac

14 (C)When they came to the crowd, a man came up to Jesus, falling on his knees before Him and saying, 15 [c]Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a [d](D)lunatic and is very ill; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him.” 17 And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18 And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured [e]at once.

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not drive it out?” 20 And He *said to them, “Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, (E)if you have faith [f]the size of (F)a mustard seed, you will say to (G)this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and (H)nothing will be impossible to you. 21 [[g](I)But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”]

22 (J)And while they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be [h]delivered into the hands of men; 23 and (K)they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day.” And they were deeply grieved.

The Tribute Money

24 When they came to Capernaum, those who collected (L)the [i]two-drachma tax came to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay (M)the [j]two-drachma tax?” 25 He *said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect (N)customs or (O)poll-tax, from their sons or from strangers?” 26 When Peter said, “From strangers,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are [k]exempt. 27 However, so that we do not [l](P)offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find [m]a shekel. Take that and give it to them for you and Me.”

Psalm 22:1-18

A Cry of Anguish and a Song of Praise.

For the choir director; upon [a]Aijeleth Hashshahar. A Psalm of David.

22 (A)My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?
[b](B)Far from my deliverance are the words of my [c](C)groaning.
O my God, I (D)cry by day, but You do not answer;
And by night, but [d]I have no rest.
Yet (E)You are holy,
O You who [e]are enthroned upon (F)the praises of Israel.
In You our fathers (G)trusted;
They trusted and You (H)delivered them.
To You they cried out and were delivered;
(I)In You they trusted and were not [f]disappointed.

But I am a (J)worm and not a man,
A (K)reproach of men and (L)despised by the people.
All who see me [g](M)sneer at me;
They [h]separate with the lip, they (N)wag the head, saying,
[i]Commit yourself to the Lord; (O)let Him deliver him;
Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.”

Yet You are He who (P)brought me forth from the womb;
You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts.
10 Upon You I was cast (Q)from [j]birth;
You have been my God from my mother’s womb.

11 (R)Be not far from me, for [k]trouble is near;
For there is (S)none to help.
12 Many (T)bulls have surrounded me;
Strong bulls of (U)Bashan have encircled me.
13 They (V)open wide their mouth at me,
As a ravening and a roaring (W)lion.
14 I am (X)poured out like water,
And all my (Y)bones are out of joint;
My (Z)heart is like wax;
It is melted within [l]me.
15 My (AA)strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And (AB)my tongue cleaves to my jaws;
And You (AC)lay me [m]in the dust of death.
16 For (AD)dogs have surrounded me;
[n]A band of evildoers has encompassed me;
[o]They (AE)pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I can count all my bones.
(AF)They look, they stare at me;
18 They (AG)divide my garments among them,
And for my clothing they cast lots.

Proverbs 5:7-14

(A)Now then, my sons, listen to me
And (B)do not depart from the words of my mouth.
(C)Keep your way far from her
And do not go near the (D)door of her house,
Or you will give your vigor to others
And your years to the cruel one;
10 And strangers will be filled with your strength
And your hard-earned goods will go to the house of an alien;
11 And you groan at your [a]final end,
When your flesh and your body are consumed;
12 And you say, “How I have (E)hated instruction!
And my heart (F)spurned reproof!
13 “I have not listened to the voice of my (G)teachers,
Nor inclined my ear to my instructors!
14 “I was almost in utter ruin
In the midst of the assembly and congregation.”
