Amalek Fought
8 Then (A)Amalek came and fought against Israel at (B)Rephidim. 9 So Moses said to (C)Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with (D)the staff of God in my hand.” 10 Joshua did as Moses [a]told him, [b]and fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and (E)Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand [c]down, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses’ hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur (F)supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set. 13 So Joshua [d]overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “(G)Write this in [e]a book as a memorial and [f]recite it to Joshua, [g]that (H)I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 Moses built an (I)altar and named it (J)The Lord is My Banner; 16 and he said, “[h](K)The Lord has sworn; the Lord will have war against Amalek from generation to generation.”
Jethro, Moses’ Father-in-law
18 Now (L)Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel His people, how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt. 2 Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Moses’ wife (M)Zipporah, after he had sent her away, 3 and her (N)two sons, of whom [i]one was named Gershom, for Moses said, “I have been (O)a [j]sojourner in a foreign land.” 4 [k]The other was named [l](P)Eliezer, for he said, “(Q)The God of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.”
5 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses [m]in the wilderness where he was camped, at (R)the mount of God. 6 He [n]sent word to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.” 7 Then Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and (S)he bowed down and (T)kissed him; and they (U)asked each other of their welfare and went into the tent. 8 Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians (V)for Israel’s sake, all the (W)hardship that had befallen them on the journey, and how (X)the Lord had delivered them. 9 Jethro rejoiced over all (Y)the goodness which the Lord had done to Israel, [o]in delivering [p]them from the hand of the Egyptians. 10 So Jethro said, “(Z)Blessed be the Lord who delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh, and who delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that (AA)the Lord is greater than all the gods; [q]indeed, (AB)it was proven when they dealt proudly against [r]the people.” 12 (AC)Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat [s]a meal with Moses’ father-in-law before God.
13 It came about the next day that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood about Moses from the morning until the evening. 14 Now when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, “What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge and all the people stand about you from morning until evening?” 15 Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me (AD)to inquire of God. 16 When they have a [t](AE)dispute, it comes to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor and make known the statutes of God and His laws.”
Jethro Counsels Moses
17 Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you are doing is not good. 18 (AF)You will surely wear out, both yourself and [u]these people who are with you, for the [v]task is too heavy for you; (AG)you cannot do it alone. 19 Now listen to [w]me: I will give you counsel, and God be with you. [x]You be the people’s representative before God, and you (AH)bring the [y]disputes to God, 20 (AI)then teach them the statutes and the laws, and make known to them (AJ)the way in which they are to walk and the work they are to do. 21 Furthermore, you shall [z]select out of all the people (AK)able men (AL)who fear God, men of truth, those who (AM)hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, [aa]of hundreds, [ab]of fifties and [ac]of tens. 22 Let them judge the people at all times; and let it be (AN)that every major [ad]dispute they will bring to you, but every minor [ae]dispute they themselves will judge. So it will be easier for you, and (AO)they will bear the burden with you. 23 If you do this thing and God so commands you, then you will be able to [af]endure, and all [ag]these people also will go to [ah]their place in peace.”
24 So Moses listened [ai]to his father-in-law and did all that he had said. 25 Moses chose (AP)able men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, leaders of thousands, [aj]of hundreds, [ak]of fifties and [al]of tens. 26 They judged the people at all times; (AQ)the difficult [am]dispute they would bring to Moses, but every minor [an]dispute they themselves would judge. 27 Then Moses [ao](AR)bade his father-in-law farewell, and he went his way into his own land.
Moses on Sinai
19 (AS)In the third month after the sons of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, [ap]on that very day they came into the wilderness of (AT)Sinai. 2 When they set out from (AU)Rephidim, they came to the wilderness of Sinai and camped in the wilderness; and there Israel camped in front of (AV)the mountain. 3 Moses went up to God, and (AW)the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob and tell the sons of Israel: 4 ‘(AX)You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on (AY)eagles’ wings, and brought you to Myself. 5 Now then, (AZ)if you will indeed obey My voice and (BA)keep My covenant, then you shall be (BB)My [aq]own possession among all the peoples, for (BC)all the earth is Mine; 6 and you shall be to Me (BD)a kingdom of priests and (BE)a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”
7 (BF)So Moses came and called the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which the Lord had commanded him. 8 (BG)All the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do!” And Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord. 9 The Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you in (BH)a thick cloud, so that the (BI)people may hear when I speak with you and may also believe in you forever.” Then Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.
10 The Lord also said to Moses, “Go to the people and (BJ)consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them (BK)wash their garments; 11 and let them be ready for the third day, for on (BL)the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘[ar]Beware that you do not go up on the mountain or touch the border of it; (BM)whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. 13 No hand shall touch him, but (BN)he shall surely be stoned or [as]shot through; whether beast or man, he shall not live.’ When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast, they shall come up to (BO)the mountain.” 14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and consecrated the people, and they washed their garments. 15 He said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not go near a woman.”
34 (A)But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced (B)the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together. 35 One of them, [a](C)a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “‘(D)You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the great and [b]foremost commandment. 39 The second is like it, ‘(E)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 (F)On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”
41 (G)Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question: 42 “What do you think about [c]the Christ, whose son is He?” They *said to Him, “(H)The son of David.” 43 He *said to them, “Then how does David [d](I)in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying,
44 ‘(J)The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Until I put Your enemies beneath Your feet”’?
45 If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his son?” 46 (K)No one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him [e]another question.
Pharisaism Exposed
23 (L)Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, 2 saying: “(M)The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; 3 therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them. 4 (N)They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger. 5 But they do all their deeds (O)to be noticed by men; for they (P)broaden their [f]phylacteries and lengthen (Q)the tassels of their garments. 6 They (R)love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called (S)Rabbi by men. 8 But (T)do not be called (U)Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 Do not call anyone on earth your father; for (V)One is your Father, He who is in heaven. 10 Do not be called [g]leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ. 11 (W)But the greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 (X)Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.
7 (A)Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice,
And be gracious to me and (B)answer me.
8 When You said, “(C)Seek My face,” my heart said to You,
“Your face, O Lord, (D)I shall seek.”
9 (E)Do not hide Your face from me,
Do not turn Your servant away in (F)anger;
You have been (G)my help;
(H)Do not abandon me nor (I)forsake me,
O God of my salvation!
10 [a]For my father and (J)my mother have forsaken me,
But (K)the Lord will take me up.
11 (L)Teach me Your way, O Lord,
And lead me in a (M)level path
Because of [b]my foes.
12 Do not deliver me over to the [c](N)desire of my adversaries,
For (O)false witnesses have risen against me,
And such as (P)breathe out violence.
13 [d]I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the (Q)goodness of the Lord
In the (R)land of the living.
14 (S)Wait for the Lord;
Be (T)strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the Lord.
27 Can a man [a]take fire in his bosom
And his clothes not be burned?
28 Or can a man walk on hot coals
And his feet not be scorched?
29 So is the one who (A)goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
Whoever touches her (B)will not [b]go unpunished.
30 [c]Men do not despise a thief if he steals
To (C)satisfy [d]himself when he is hungry;
31 But when he is found, he must (D)repay sevenfold;
He must give all the [e]substance of his house.
32 The one who commits adultery with a woman is (E)lacking [f]sense;
He who would (F)destroy [g]himself does it.
33 Wounds and disgrace he will find,
And his reproach will not be blotted out.
34 For (G)jealousy [h]enrages a man,
And he will not spare in the (H)day of vengeance.
35 He will not [i]accept any ransom,
Nor will he be [j]satisfied though you give many [k]gifts.
