28 “(A)For they are a nation where counsel perishes,
And there is no discernment in them.
29 (B)Would that they were wise, that they had insight into this,
(C)That they would understand their [a]future!
30 (D)How could one pursue one thousand,
And two put ten thousand to flight,
Unless their (E)Rock had sold them,
And Yahweh had handed them over?
31 Indeed their rock is not like our Rock,
(F)Even our enemies [b]themselves judge this.
32 For their vine is from the vine of Sodom,
And from the fields of Gomorrah;
Their grapes are grapes of (G)poison,
Their clusters, bitter.
33 Their wine is the venom of [c]serpents,
And the [d]deadly poison of cobras.
34 ‘(H)Is it not laid up in store with Me,
Sealed up in My treasuries?
35 (I)Vengeance is Mine, and retribution,
(J)In due time their foot will stumble;
(K)For the day of their disaster is near,
And the impending things are hastening upon them.’
36 (L)For Yahweh will render justice to His people,
(M)And will have compassion on His slaves,
When He sees that their [e]strength is gone,
And there is none remaining, bond or free.
37 And He will say, ‘(N)Where are their gods,
The rock in which they sought refuge?
38 (O)Who ate the fat of their sacrifices,
And drank the wine of their drink offering?
(P)Let them rise up and help you,
Let them be your hiding place!
39 (Q)See now that I, I am He,
(R)And there is no god besides Me;
(S)It is I who put to death and give life.
(T)I have wounded, and it is I who heal,
(U)And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.
40 Indeed, (V)I lift up My hand to heaven,
And say, as I live forever,
41 (W)If I sharpen My [f]flashing sword,
And My hand takes hold on judgment,
(X)I will render vengeance on My adversaries,
And I will repay those who hate Me.
42 (Y)I will make My arrows drunk with blood,
(Z)And My sword will devour flesh,
With the blood of the slain and the captives,
From the long-haired [g]leaders of the enemy.’
43 (AA)O nations, cause His people to shout for joy;
(AB)For He will avenge the blood of His slaves,
(AC)And He will render vengeance on His adversaries,
(AD)And He will atone for His land and His people.”
44 Then Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he and [h](AE)Joshua the son of Nun. 45 Then Moses finished speaking all these words to all Israel, 46 and he said to them, “(AF)Place in your heart all the words with which I am warning you today, which you shall command (AG)your sons to be careful to do, even all the words of this law. 47 For it is not an idle word for you; indeed (AH)it is your life. And (AI)by this word you will prolong your days in the land, [i]which you are about to cross the Jordan to [j]possess.”
Moses to Go Up Mount Nebo
48 (AJ)And Yahweh spoke to Moses that very same day, saying, 49 “(AK)Go up to this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab [k]opposite Jericho, and look at the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel for a possession. 50 Then die on the mountain where you ascend, and be (AL)gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people, 51 (AM)because you both acted unfaithfully with Me in the midst of the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the (AN)wilderness of Zin, because you both did not treat Me as holy in the midst of the sons of Israel. 52 (AO)For you shall see the land at a distance, but (AP)you shall not go there, into the land which I am giving the sons of Israel.”
Be Ready for His Coming
35 “(A)Gird up (B)your loins, and keep your lamps lit. 36 And be like men who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that they may immediately open the door to him when he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find (C)awake when he comes; truly I say to you, that (D)he will gird himself to serve, and have them recline at the table, and will come up and wait on them. 38 (E)Whether he comes in the [a]second watch, or even in the [b]third, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves.
39 “(F)But [c]be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have allowed his house to be [d](G)broken into. 40 (H)You too, be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not [e]expect.”
41 Now Peter said, “Lord, are You addressing this parable to us, or (I)to everyone else as well?” 42 And (J)the Lord said, “(K)Who then is the faithful and prudent (L)steward, whom his master will put in charge of his [f]servants, to give them their rations at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that (M)slave whom his [g]master finds so doing when he comes. 44 Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But if that slave says in his heart, ‘My master [h]will be a long time in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces, and assign him a place with the unbelievers. 47 And that slave who knew his master’s will and did not get ready or act in accord with his will, will (N)receive many beatings, 48 but the one who did not (O)know it, and committed deeds worthy of a beating, will receive but a few. (P)From everyone who has been given much, much will be required, and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more.
Not Peace, but Division
49 “I [i]have come to cast fire upon the earth, and [j]how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a (Q)baptism to [k]undergo, and how distressed I am until it is finished! 51 (R)Do you think that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division; 52 for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, (S)father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
54 And He was also saying to the crowds, “(T)When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and so it happens. 55 And when you see a south wind blowing, you say, ‘It will be a (U)hot day,’ and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! (V)You know how to examine the appearance of the earth and the sky, but [l]why do you not examine this present time?
57 “And (W)why do you not even judge for yourselves what is right? 58 For (X)while you are going with your opponent to appear before the magistrate, on your way there make an effort to [m]settle with him, so that he may not drag you before the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I say to you, you will not get out of there until you have paid the last [n](Y)lepton.”
56 Yet they [a](A)tested and (B)rebelled against the Most High God
And did not keep His testimonies,
57 But turned back and (C)acted treacherously like their fathers;
They (D)turned aside like a treacherous bow.
58 For they (E)provoked Him with their (F)high places
And (G)aroused His jealousy with their (H)graven images.
59 God heard and [b]was filled with (I)wrath
And greatly (J)rejected Israel;
60 So that He (K)abandoned the (L)dwelling place at Shiloh,
The tent [c]which He caused to dwell among men,
61 And gave up His (M)strength to captivity
And His beauty (N)into the hand of the adversary.
62 He also (O)gave over His people to the sword,
And [d]was filled with wrath at His inheritance.
63 (P)Fire devoured [e]His choice men,
And [f]His (Q)virgins had no wedding songs.
64 [g]His (R)priests fell by the sword,
And [h]His (S)widows could not weep.
