1 Samuel 10-11

Saul Among the Prophets

10 Then (A)Samuel took the flask of oil, poured it on his head, (B)kissed him, and said, “Has not (C)Yahweh anointed you a ruler over (D)His inheritance? When you go from me today, then you will find two men close to (E)Rachel’s tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say to you, ‘(F)The donkeys which you went to search for have been found. Now behold, your father has [a]ceased to be concerned about the donkeys and is anxious for you, saying, “What shall I do about my son?”’ Then you will go on further from there, and you will come as far as the [b](G)oak of Tabor, and there three men going up (H)to God at Bethel will meet you, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a jug of wine; and they will greet you and give you two loaves of bread. And you will take them from their hand. Afterward you will come to [c](I)the hill of God where the Philistine garrison is; and it shall be as soon as you have come there to the city, that you will meet (J)a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and a lyre before them, and (K)they will be prophesying. Then (L)the Spirit of Yahweh will [d]come upon you mightily, and (M)you shall prophesy with them and be changed into another man. Now it will be when these signs come to you, (N)do for yourself whatever your hand finds to do, for (O)God is with you. And (P)you shall go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and (Q)sacrifice peace offerings. (R)You shall wait seven days until I come to you and make you know what you should do.”

Then it happened when he turned his back to leave Samuel, God (S)changed [e]his heart; and all those signs came about on that day. 10 (T)And they came to [f]the hill there, and behold, a group of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God [g]came upon him mightily, so that he prophesied among them. 11 Now it happened that all who knew him previously saw, and behold, he was prophesying with the prophets, so the people said to one another, “What has happened to the son of Kish? (U)Is Saul also among the prophets?” 12 And a man there answered and said, “Now, who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb: “(V)Is Saul also among the prophets?” 13 Then he finished prophesying and came to the high place.

14 Now (W)Saul’s uncle said to him and his young man, “Where did you go?” And he said, “(X)To look for the donkeys. And we saw that they were not anywhere, so we went to Samuel.” 15 And Saul’s uncle said, “Please tell me what Samuel said to you.” 16 So Saul said to his uncle, “(Y)He told us plainly that the donkeys had been found.” But he did not tell him about the matter of the kingdom which Samuel had said.

Saul the King

17 Then Samuel called the (Z)people together to Yahweh at Mizpah; 18 and he said to the sons of Israel, “(AA)Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘I brought Israel up from Egypt, and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.’ 19 But you (AB)have today rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses; yet you have [h]said, ‘No, but set a king over us!’ So now, (AC)take your stand before Yahweh by your tribes and by your clans.”

20 Thus Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. 21 Then he brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its families, and the Matrite family was taken. And Saul the son of Kish was taken; but they looked for him, and he could not be found. 22 Therefore (AD)they inquired further of Yahweh, “Has the man come here yet?” So Yahweh said, “Behold, he is hiding himself by the baggage.” 23 So they ran and took him from there, and he stood among the people. And (AE)he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward. 24 And Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him (AF)whom Yahweh has chosen? Surely there is no one like him among all the people.” So all the people shouted and said, “[i](AG)Long live the king!”

25 Then Samuel spoke with the people about (AH)the legal judgments of the kingdom and wrote them in the book and (AI)placed it before Yahweh. And Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his house. 26 Saul also went (AJ)to his house at Gibeah; and the valiant men whose hearts God had touched went with him. 27 But certain [j](AK)vile men said, “How can this one save us?” And they despised him and (AL)did not bring him any present. But he kept silent.

Saul Strikes Down the Ammonites

11 And (AM)Nahash the Ammonite came up and [k]besieged (AN)Jabesh-gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Cut (AO)a covenant with us, and we will serve you.” But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “I will cut it with you on this condition, (AP)that I will gouge out the right eye of every one of you, thus I will make it (AQ)a reproach on all Israel.” (AR)Then the elders of Jabesh said to him, “Let us alone for seven days, that we may send messengers throughout the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you.” Then the messengers came (AS)to Gibeah of Saul and spoke these words in the hearing of the people, and all the people (AT)lifted up their voices and wept.

Now behold, Saul was coming from the field (AU)behind the oxen, and [l]he said, “What is the matter with the people that they weep?” So they recounted to him the words of the men of Jabesh. Then (AV)the Spirit of God [m]came upon Saul mightily when he heard these words, and [n]he burned with anger exceedingly. Then he took a pair of oxen and (AW)cut them in pieces and sent them throughout the territory of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “(AX)Whoever does not come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” Then the dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out (AY)as one man. And he [o]numbered them in (AZ)Bezek; and the (BA)sons of Israel were 300,000, and the men of Judah 30,000. And they said to the messengers who had come, “Thus you shall say to the men of Jabesh-gilead, ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will have salvation.’” So the messengers went and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad. 10 Then the men of Jabesh said, “(BB)Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good in your eyes.” 11 Then the next morning Saul put the people (BC)in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp at the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

12 Then the people said to Samuel, “(BD)Who is he that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ [p](BE)Bring the men, that we may put them to death.” 13 But Saul said, “(BF)Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today (BG)Yahweh has accomplished salvation in Israel.”

14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come and let us go to (BH)Gilgal and (BI)renew the kingdom there.” 15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king (BJ)before Yahweh in Gilgal. There they also (BK)offered sacrifices of peace offerings before Yahweh; and there Saul and all the men of Israel were exceedingly glad.

John 6:43-71

43 Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop grumbling among yourselves. 44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me (A)draws him; and I will (B)raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written (C)in the prophets, ‘(D)And they shall all be (E)taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me. 46 (F)Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes (G)has eternal life. 48 (H)I am the bread of life. 49 (I)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread which (J)comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and (K)not die. 51 (L)I am the living bread that (M)came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, (N)he will live forever; and also the bread which I will give (O)for the life of the world is (P)My flesh.”

52 (Q)Then the Jews (R)began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of (S)the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will (T)raise him up on the last day. 55 For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood (U)abides in Me, and I in him. 57 As the (V)living Father (W)sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread which (X)came down out of heaven, not as (Y)the fathers ate and died. He who eats this bread (Z)will live forever.”

Words to the Disciples

59 These things He said (AA)in the synagogue as He taught (AB)in Capernaum.

60 Therefore many of His (AC)disciples, when they heard this said, “(AD)This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, (AE)knowing in Himself that His disciples were grumbling at this, said to them, “Does this (AF)cause you to stumble? 62 What then if you see (AG)the Son of Man (AH)ascending to where He was before? 63 (AI)The Spirit is the One who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; (AJ)the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. 64 But there are (AK)some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus (AL)knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and (AM)who it was that would [a]betray Him. 65 And He was saying, “For this reason I have (AN)said to you, that no one can come to Me unless (AO)it has been granted him from the Father.”

Peter Confesses Jesus Is the Christ

66 As a result of this many of His (AP)disciples [b](AQ)went away and were not walking with Him anymore. 67 So Jesus said to (AR)the twelve, “Do you also want to go?” 68 (AS)Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (AT)words of eternal life. 69 And we have believed and have come to know that You are (AU)the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, (AV)Did I Myself not choose you, (AW)the twelve, and yet one of you is (AX)a devil?” 71 Now He was speaking of Judas (AY)the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, (AZ)one of (BA)the twelve, [c]was going to betray Him.

Psalm 107

BOOK 5

Yahweh Saves in Times of Trouble

107 Oh (A)give thanks to Yahweh, for (B)He is good,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
Let (C)the redeemed of Yahweh say so,
Whom He has (D)redeemed from the hand of the adversary
And (E)gathered from the lands,
From the east and from the west,
From the north and from the [a]south.

They (F)wandered in the wilderness along the way of the wasteland;
They did not find an inhabited (G)city.
Hungry [b]and thirsty,
Their (H)soul fainted within them.
Then they (I)cried out to Yahweh in their trouble;
He delivered them out of their distresses.
He led them by a [c](J)straight way,
To go to (K)an inhabited city.
(L)Let them give thanks to Yahweh for His lovingkindness,
And for His wondrous deeds to the sons of men!
For He has (M)satisfied the [d]thirsty soul,
And the (N)hungry soul He has filled with what is good.

10 There were those who (O)inhabited darkness and the shadow of death,
(P)Prisoners in affliction and irons,
11 Because they had (Q)rebelled against the words of God
And (R)spurned the (S)counsel of the Most High.
12 So He subdued their heart with labor;
They stumbled and there was (T)none to help.
13 Then they (U)cried out to Yahweh in their trouble;
He saved them out of their distresses.
14 He (V)brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death
And (W)broke their bands apart.
15 (X)Let them give thanks to Yahweh for His lovingkindness,
And for His wondrous deeds to the sons of men!
16 For He has (Y)shattered the doors of bronze
And cut through the bars of iron.

17 [e]Ignorant fools, because of their way of transgression,
And (Z)because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
18 Their (AA)soul abhorred all kinds of food,
And they (AB)reached the (AC)gates of death.
19 Then they cried out to Yahweh in their trouble;
He saved them out of their distresses.
20 He (AD)sent His word and (AE)healed them,
And (AF)provided them escape from their [f]destructions.
21 (AG)Let them give thanks to Yahweh for His lovingkindness,
And for His wondrous deeds to the sons of men!
22 Let them also offer (AH)sacrifices of thanksgiving,
And (AI)recount His works with joyful singing.

23 Those who (AJ)go down to the sea in ships,
Who do business on many waters;
24 They have seen the works of Yahweh,
And His wondrous deeds in the deep.
25 He (AK)spoke and set up a (AL)stormy wind,
Which (AM)raised up the waves [g]of the sea.
26 They went up to the heavens, they went down to the depths;
Their soul (AN)melted away in the [h]calamity.
27 They staggered and (AO)swayed like a drunken man,
And all their wisdom was swallowed up.
28 Then they cried to Yahweh in their trouble,
And He brought them out of their distresses.
29 He (AP)caused the storm to stand still,
So that its waves were hushed.
30 Then they were glad because they were quiet,
So He led them to their desired haven.
31 (AQ)Let them give thanks to Yahweh for His lovingkindness,
And for His (AR)wondrous deeds to the sons of men!
32 Let them (AS)exalt Him also (AT)in the assembly of the people,
And (AU)praise Him at the seat of the elders.

33 He [i](AV)makes rivers into a [j]wilderness
And springs of water into a thirsty ground;
34 A (AW)fruitful land into a (AX)salt waste,
Because of the evil of those who inhabited it.
35 He (AY)makes a wilderness into a pool of water
And a dry land into springs of water;
36 And there He causes the hungry to inhabit,
So that they may establish (AZ)an inhabited city,
37 And sow fields and (BA)plant vineyards,
And produce a fruitful harvest.
38 Also He blesses them and they (BB)multiply greatly,
And He (BC)does not let their cattle decrease.

39 But when they (BD)decrease and are (BE)bowed down
Through oppression, evil, and sorrow,
40 He (BF)pours contempt upon nobles
And (BG)makes them wander (BH)in a pathless void.
41 But He (BI)sets the needy [k]securely on high away from affliction,
And (BJ)makes his families like a flock.
42 The (BK)upright see it and are glad;
But all (BL)unrighteousness shuts its mouth.
43 Who is (BM)wise? Let him keep these things,
And carefully consider the (BN)lovingkindnesses of Yahweh.

Proverbs 15:1-3

15 A (A)gentle answer turns away wrath,
But a [a](B)harsh word stirs up anger.
The (C)tongue of the wise makes knowledge look good,
But the (D)mouth of [b]fools pours forth [c]folly.
The (E)eyes of Yahweh are in every place,
Watching the evil and the good.
