1 Samuel 10-11

Saul among Prophets

10 Then (A)Samuel took the flask of oil, poured it on his head, (B)kissed him and said, “Has not (C)the Lord anointed you a ruler over (D)His inheritance? When you go from me today, then you will find two men close to (E)Rachel’s tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say to you, ‘(F)The donkeys which you went to look for have been found. Now behold, your father has [a]ceased to be concerned about the donkeys and is anxious for you, saying, “What shall I do about my son?”’ Then you will go on further from there, and you will come as far as the [b](G)oak of Tabor, and there three men going up (H)to God at Bethel will meet you, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a jug of wine; and they will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you will accept from their hand. Afterward you will come to [c](I)the hill of God where the Philistine garrison is; and it shall be as soon as you have come there to the city, that you will meet (J)a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and a lyre before them, and (K)they will be prophesying. Then (L)the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you mightily, and (M)you shall prophesy with them and be changed into another man. It shall be when these signs come to you, (N)do for yourself what [d]the occasion requires, for (O)God is with you. And (P)you shall go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and (Q)sacrifice peace offerings. (R)You shall wait seven days until I come to you and show you what you should do.”

Then it happened when he turned his back to leave Samuel, God (S)changed [e]his heart; and all those signs came about on that day. 10 (T)When they came to [f]the hill there, behold, a group of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him mightily, so that he prophesied among them. 11 It came about, when all who knew him previously saw that he prophesied now with the prophets, that the people said to one another, “What has happened to the son of Kish? (U)Is Saul also among the prophets?” 12 A man there said, “Now, who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb: “(V)Is Saul also among the prophets?” 13 When he had finished prophesying, he came to the high place.

14 Now (W)Saul’s uncle said to him and his servant, “Where did you go?” And he said, “(X)To look for the donkeys. When we saw that they could not be found, we went to Samuel.” 15 Saul’s uncle said, “Please tell me what Samuel said to you.” 16 So Saul said to his uncle, “(Y)He told us plainly that the donkeys had been found.” But he did not tell him about the matter of the kingdom which Samuel had mentioned.

Saul Publicly Chosen King

17 Thereafter Samuel called the (Z)people together to the Lord at Mizpah; 18 and he said to the sons of Israel, “(AA)Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I brought Israel up from Egypt, and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the [g]power of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.’ 19 But you (AB)have today rejected your God, who delivers you from all your calamities and your distresses; yet you have [h]said, ‘No, but set a king over us!’ Now therefore, (AC)present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your clans.”

20 Thus Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. 21 Then he brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its families, and the Matrite family was taken. And Saul the son of Kish was taken; but when they looked for him, he could not be found. 22 Therefore (AD)they inquired further of the Lord, “Has the man come here yet?” So the Lord said, “Behold, he is hiding himself by the baggage.” 23 So they ran and took him from there, and when he stood among the people, (AE)he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward. 24 Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him (AF)whom the Lord has chosen? Surely there is no one like him among all the people.” So all the people shouted and said, “[i](AG)Long live the king!”

25 Then Samuel told the people (AH)the ordinances of the kingdom, and wrote them in the book and (AI)placed it before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his house. 26 Saul also went (AJ)to his house at Gibeah; and the valiant men whose hearts God had touched went with him. 27 But certain [j](AK)worthless men said, “How can this one deliver us?” And they despised him and (AL)did not bring him any present. But he kept silent.

Saul Defeats the Ammonites

11 Now (AM)Nahash the Ammonite came up and [k]besieged (AN)Jabesh-gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make (AO)a covenant with us and we will serve you.” But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “I will make it with you on this condition, (AP)that I will gouge out the right eye of every one of you, thus I will make it (AQ)a reproach on all Israel.” (AR)The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Let us alone for seven days, that we may send messengers throughout the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to deliver us, we will come out to you.” Then the messengers came (AS)to Gibeah of Saul and spoke these words in the hearing of the people, and all the people (AT)lifted up their voices and wept.

Now behold, Saul was coming from the field (AU)behind the oxen, and [l]he said, “What is the matter with the people that they weep?” So they related to him the words of the men of Jabesh. Then (AV)the Spirit of God came upon Saul mightily when he heard these words, and [m]he became very angry. He took a yoke of oxen and (AW)cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout the territory of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “(AX)Whoever does not come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” Then the dread of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out (AY)as one man. He [n]numbered them in (AZ)Bezek; and the (BA)sons of Israel were 300,000, and the men of Judah 30,000. They said to the messengers who had come, “Thus you shall say to the men of Jabesh-gilead, ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will have deliverance.’” So the messengers went and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad. 10 Then the men of Jabesh said, “(BB)Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good [o]to you.” 11 The next morning Saul put the people (BC)in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp at the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

12 Then the people said to Samuel, “(BD)Who is he that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ [p](BE)Bring the men, that we may put them to death.” 13 But Saul said, “(BF)Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today (BG)the Lord has accomplished deliverance in Israel.”

14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come and let us go to (BH)Gilgal and (BI)renew the kingdom there.” 15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king (BJ)before the Lord in Gilgal. There they also (BK)offered sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

John 6:43-71

43 Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me (A)draws him; and I will (B)raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written (C)in the prophets, ‘(D)And they shall all be (E)taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. 46 (F)Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes (G)has eternal life. 48 (H)I am the bread of life. 49 (I)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread which (J)comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and (K)not die. 51 (L)I am the living bread that (M)came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, (N)he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give (O)for the life of the world is (P)My flesh.”

52 (Q)Then the Jews (R)began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of (S)the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will (T)raise him up on the last day. 55 For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood (U)abides in Me, and I in him. 57 As the (V)living Father (W)sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread which (X)came down out of heaven; not as (Y)the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread (Z)will live forever.”

Words to the Disciples

59 These things He said (AA)in the synagogue as He taught (AB)in Capernaum.

60 Therefore many of His (AC)disciples, when they heard this said, “(AD)This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, (AE)conscious that His disciples grumbled at this, said to them, “Does this (AF)cause you to stumble? 62 What then if you see (AG)the Son of Man (AH)ascending to where He was before? 63 (AI)It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; (AJ)the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. 64 But there are (AK)some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus (AL)knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and (AM)who it was that would [a]betray Him. 65 And He was saying, “For this reason I have (AN)said to you, that no one can come to Me unless (AO)it has been granted him from the Father.”

Peter’s Confession of Faith

66 As a result of this many of His (AP)disciples (AQ)withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore. 67 So Jesus said to (AR)the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?” 68 (AS)Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (AT)words of eternal life. 69 We have believed and have come to know that You are (AU)the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, (AV)Did I Myself not choose you, (AW)the twelve, and yet one of you is (AX)a devil?” 71 Now He meant Judas (AY)the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, (AZ)one of (BA)the twelve, [b]was going to betray Him.

Psalm 107

BOOK 5

The Lord Delivers Men from Manifold Troubles.

107 Oh (A)give thanks to the Lord, for (B)He is good,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Let (C)the redeemed of the Lord say so,
Whom He has (D)redeemed from the hand of the adversary
And (E)gathered from the lands,
From the east and from the west,
From the north and from the [a]south.

They (F)wandered in the wilderness in a [b]desert region;
They did not find a way to [c]an inhabited (G)city.
They were hungry [d]and thirsty;
Their (H)soul fainted within them.
Then they (I)cried out to the Lord in their trouble;
He delivered them out of their distresses.
He led them also by a [e](J)straight way,
To go to [f](K)an inhabited city.
(L)Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness,
And for His [g]wonders to the sons of men!
For He has (M)satisfied the [h]thirsty soul,
And the (N)hungry soul He has filled with what is good.

10 There were those who (O)dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death,
(P)Prisoners in [i]misery and [j]chains,
11 Because they had (Q)rebelled against the words of God
And (R)spurned the (S)counsel of the Most High.
12 Therefore He humbled their heart with labor;
They stumbled and there was (T)none to help.
13 Then they (U)cried out to the Lord in their trouble;
He saved them out of their distresses.
14 He (V)brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death
And (W)broke their bands apart.
15 (X)Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness,
And for His [k]wonders to the sons of men!
16 For He has (Y)shattered gates of bronze
And cut bars of iron asunder.

17 Fools, because of [l]their rebellious way,
And (Z)because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
18 Their (AA)soul abhorred all kinds of food,
And they (AB)drew near to the (AC)gates of death.
19 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble;
He saved them out of their distresses.
20 He (AD)sent His word and (AE)healed them,
And (AF)delivered them from their [m]destructions.
21 (AG)Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness,
And for His [n]wonders to the sons of men!
22 Let them also offer (AH)sacrifices of thanksgiving,
And (AI)tell of His works with joyful singing.

23 Those who (AJ)go down to the sea in ships,
Who do business on great waters;
24 They have seen the works of the Lord,
And His [o]wonders in the deep.
25 For He (AK)spoke and raised up a (AL)stormy wind,
Which (AM)lifted up the waves [p]of the sea.
26 They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths;
Their soul (AN)melted away in their misery.
27 They reeled and (AO)staggered like a drunken man,
And [q]were at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
And He brought them out of their distresses.
29 He (AP)caused the storm to be still,
So that the waves [r]of the sea were hushed.
30 Then they were glad because they were quiet,
So He guided them to their desired haven.
31 (AQ)Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness,
And for His [s](AR)wonders to the sons of men!
32 Let them (AS)extol Him also (AT)in the congregation of the people,
And (AU)praise Him at the seat of the elders.

33 He [t](AV)changes rivers into a [u]wilderness
And springs of water into a thirsty ground;
34 A (AW)fruitful land into a (AX)salt waste,
Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
35 He [v](AY)changes a [w]wilderness into a pool of water
And a dry land into springs of water;
36 And there He makes the hungry to dwell,
So that they may establish [x](AZ)an inhabited city,
37 And sow fields and (BA)plant vineyards,
And [y]gather a fruitful harvest.
38 Also He blesses them and they (BB)multiply greatly,
And He (BC)does not let their cattle decrease.

39 When they are (BD)diminished and (BE)bowed down
Through oppression, misery and sorrow,
40 He (BF)pours contempt upon [z]princes
And (BG)makes them wander (BH)in a pathless waste.
41 But He (BI)sets the needy [aa]securely on high away from affliction,
And (BJ)makes his families like a flock.
42 The (BK)upright see it and are glad;
But all (BL)unrighteousness shuts its mouth.
43 Who is (BM)wise? Let him give heed to these things,
And consider the (BN)lovingkindnesses of the Lord.

Proverbs 15:1-3

Contrast the Upright and the Wicked

15 A (A)gentle answer turns away wrath,
But a [a](B)harsh word stirs up anger.
The (C)tongue of the wise makes knowledge [b]acceptable,
But the (D)mouth of fools spouts folly.
The (E)eyes of the Lord are in every place,
Watching the evil and the good.
