5 So David went out wherever Saul sent him and [a]prospered; and Saul set him over the men of war. And it was pleasing in the eyes of all the people and also in the eyes of Saul’s servants.
Saul Looks at David with Suspicion
6 And it happened as they were coming, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, that (A)the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with gladness, and with [b]musical instruments. 7 And the women (B)sang as they [c]were merry and said,
8 Then Saul became very angry, for this saying was [d]displeasing in his eyes; and he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, but to me they have ascribed thousands. Now (E)what more can he have but the kingdom?” 9 So Saul looked at David with suspicion from that day on.
10 Now it happened on the next day that (F)an evil spirit from God [e]came mightily upon Saul, and (G)he raved in the midst of the house. Now David was playing the harp with his hand, [f](H)as usual; and [g](I)a spear was in Saul’s hand. 11 (J)Then Saul hurled the spear for he thought, “I will [h]pin David to the wall.” But David [i]escaped from his presence twice.
12 And (K)Saul was afraid of David, (L)for Yahweh was with him but (M)had turned away from Saul. 13 Therefore Saul turned him away from [j]his presence and appointed him as his commander of one thousand; and (N)he went out and came in before the people. 14 And David was [k]prospering in all his ways, and (O)Yahweh was with him. 15 Then Saul saw that he was [l]prospering greatly, so he dreaded him. 16 But (P)all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them.
17 Then Saul said to David, “(Q)Here is my older daughter Merab; I will give her to you as a wife; only be a man of valor for me and fight (R)Yahweh’s battles.” For Saul thought, “My hand shall not be against him, but (S)let the hand of the Philistines be against him.” 18 But David said to Saul, “(T)Who am I, and what is my life or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be the king’s son-in-law?” 19 So it happened at the time when Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David, that she was given to (U)Adriel (V)the Meholathite as a wife.
Saul’s Daughter Given to David
20 And (W)Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved David. So they told Saul, and the thing was right in his eyes. 21 And Saul said, “I will give her to him that she may become a snare to him, and (X)that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David, “(Y)For a second time you may be my son-in-law today.” 22 Then Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David secretly, saying, ‘Behold, the king delights in you, and all his servants love you; so now, become the king’s son-in-law.’” 23 So Saul’s servants spoke these words in [m]David’s hearing. But David said, “Is it trivial in your eyes to become the king’s son-in-law, (Z)since I am a poor man and lightly esteemed?” 24 And the servants of Saul told to him [n]according to these words which David spoke. 25 Saul then said, “Thus you shall say to David, ‘The king does not desire any (AA)dowry except one hundred foreskins of the Philistines, (AB)to take vengeance on the king’s enemies.’” Now (AC)Saul planned to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. 26 Then his servants told David these words, and it was right in the eyes of David to become the king’s son-in-law. [o](AD)So before the days had expired, 27 David rose up and went, (AE)he and his men, and struck down two hundred men among the Philistines. Then (AF)David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might become the king’s son-in-law. So Saul gave him Michal his daughter as a wife. 28 Then Saul saw and knew that Yahweh was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him, 29 so Saul was even more afraid of David. So Saul was David’s enemy continually.
30 Then the commanders of the Philistines (AG)went out to battle, and it happened as often as they went out, that David (AH)behaved himself more insightfully than all the servants of Saul. So his name was highly esteemed.
David Escapes from Saul
19 Then Saul spoke with Jonathan his son and all his servants (AI)to put David to death. But (AJ)Jonathan, Saul’s son, greatly delighted in David. 2 So Jonathan told David saying, “Saul my father is seeking to put you to death. So now, please be careful in the morning, and stay in a secret place and hide yourself. 3 And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak with my father about you; (AK)what I [p]perceive, I will tell you.” 4 Then Jonathan (AL)spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “(AM)Do not let the king sin against his servant David, since he has not sinned against you, and since his works have been very good for you. 5 For (AN)he took his life in his hand and struck the Philistine, and (AO)Yahweh brought about a great salvation for all Israel; you saw it and were glad. (AP)Why then will you sin against innocent blood by putting David to death without a cause?” 6 And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan, and Saul swore, “As Yahweh lives, he shall not be put to death.” 7 Then Jonathan called David, and Jonathan told him all these words. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as (AQ)formerly.
8 Then there was war again. And David went out and fought with the Philistines and struck them with a great slaughter, so that they fled before him. 9 Now there was (AR)an evil spirit from Yahweh on Saul as he was sitting in his house (AS)with his spear in his hand, (AT)and David was playing the harp with his hand. 10 (AU)And Saul tried to [q]pin David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence, so that he [r]stuck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.
11 Then (AV)Saul sent messengers to David’s house to keep watch over him, in order to put him to death in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife, told him, saying, “If you do not make an escape for your life tonight, tomorrow you will be put to death.” 12 (AW)So Michal let David down through a window, and he went out and fled and escaped. 13 Then Michal took (AX)the [s]household idol and laid it on the bed and put a quilt of goats’ hair at its head and covered it with clothes. 14 Then Saul sent messengers to take David, but she said, “(AY)He is sick.” 15 So Saul sent messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me on [t]his bed, that I may put him to death.” 16 The messengers came, and behold, the [u]household idol was on the bed with the quilt of goats’ hair at its head. 17 So Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me like this and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?” And Michal said to Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go! (AZ)Why should I put you to death?’”
18 Now David fled and escaped and came (BA)to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and stayed in (BB)Naioth. 19 And it was told to Saul, saying, “Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.” 20 Then (BC)Saul sent messengers to take David, but they saw (BD)the company of the prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing and presiding over them. And the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul; and (BE)they also prophesied. 21 This was told to Saul, and he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. So Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also prophesied. 22 Then he himself went to Ramah and came as far as the large well that is in Secu; and he asked and said, “Where are Samuel and David?” And someone said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.” 23 So he went there, to Naioth in Ramah; and (BF)the Spirit of God came upon him also, so that he went along prophesying continually until he came to Naioth in Ramah. 24 He also stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and [v]lay down [w](BG)naked all that day and all that night. Therefore they say, “(BH)Is Saul also among the prophets?”
The Son Will Make You Free
31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “(A)If you abide in My word, then you are truly My (B)disciples; 32 and (C)you will know the truth, and (D)the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “(E)We are Abraham’s seed and have never yet been enslaved to anyone. How is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (F)everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 (G)And the slave does not remain in the house forever; (H)the son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son (I)makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are (J)Abraham’s seed; yet (K)you are seeking to kill Me, because My word [a]has no place in you. 38 I speak the things which I have seen [b]with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from (L)your father.”
39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is (M)our father.” Jesus *said to them, “(N)If you are Abraham’s children, you would do the deeds of Abraham. 40 But now (O)you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has (P)told you the truth, which I heard from God. This Abraham did not do. 41 You are doing the deeds of (Q)your father.” They said to Him, “We were not born of sexual immorality; (R)we have one Father: God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, (S)you would love Me, (T)for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have (U)not even come of Myself, but [c](V)He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand [d](W)what I am saying? It is because you cannot (X)hear My word. 44 (Y)You are of (Z)your father the devil, and (AA)you want to do the desires of your father. (AB)He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because (AC)there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks [e]a lie, he (AD)speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of [f]lies. 45 But because (AE)I speak the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If (AF)I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 (AG)He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”
48 (AH)The Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a (AI)Samaritan and (AJ)have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not (AK)have a demon, but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 But (AL)I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51 Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone (AM)keeps My word he will never (AN)see death—ever.” 52 (AO)The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You (AP)have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets also; and You say, ‘If anyone (AQ)keeps My word, he will never (AR)taste of death—ever.’ 53 Surely You (AS)are not greater than our father Abraham who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, “(AT)If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; (AU)it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; 55 and (AV)you have not known Him, (AW)but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be (AX)a liar like you, (AY)but I do know Him and (AZ)keep His word. 56 (BA)Your father Abraham (BB)rejoiced [g]to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” 57 (BC)So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, (BD)I am.” 59 Therefore they (BE)picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus [h](BF)hid Himself and went out of the temple.
