David Does Not Kill Saul
24 Now (A)when Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, (B)he was told, saying, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.” 2 Then (C)Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and went to seek David and his men in front of the Rocks of the Wild Goats. 3 And he came to the sheepfolds on the way, where there was a cave; and Saul (D)went in to [a]relieve himself. Now (E)David and his men were sitting in the inner recesses of the cave. 4 Then the men of David said to him, “Behold, (F)this is the day of which Yahweh said to you, ‘Behold, (G)I am about to give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it seems good in your eyes.’” Then David arose and cut off the edge of Saul’s robe secretly. 5 And it happened afterward that (H)David’s heart struck him because he had cut off the edge of Saul’s robe. 6 So he said to his men, “(I)Far be it from me because of Yahweh that I should do this thing to my lord, the anointed of Yahweh, to send forth my hand against him, since he is the anointed of Yahweh.” 7 And David tore his men to pieces with these words and did not allow them to rise up against Saul. And Saul arose, [b]left the cave, and went on his way.
8 Now afterward David arose and went out of the cave and called after Saul, saying, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked behind him, (J)David bowed with his [c]face to the ground and prostrated himself. 9 And David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of men, saying, ‘Behold, David seeks [d]to do you evil’? 10 (K)Behold, this day your eyes have seen that Yahweh had given you today into my hand in the cave, and (L)some said to kill you, but my eye had pity on you; and I said, ‘I will not send forth my hand against my lord, for he is the anointed of Yahweh.’ 11 Now, (M)my father, see! Indeed, see the edge of your robe in my hand! For in that I cut off the edge of your robe and did not kill you, know and see that there is no evil or transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against you, though you (N)are lying in wait for my life to take it. 12 (O)May Yahweh judge between [e]you and me, and may Yahweh avenge me on you; but my hand shall not be against you. 13 As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘(P)Out of the wicked comes forth wickedness’; but my hand shall not be against you. 14 After whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom are you pursuing? (Q)After a dead dog, after (R)a single flea? 15 (S)Therefore Yahweh be judge and execute justice between [f]you and me; and may He see and (T)plead my cause and execute justice for me to escape from your hand.”
16 Now it happened that when David had finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, “(U)Is this your voice, my son David?” Then Saul lifted up his voice and wept. 17 (V)And he said to David, “You are more righteous than I; for (W)you have dealt well with me, while I have dealt evil with you. 18 And you have declared today that you have done good to me, that (X)Yahweh surrendered me into your hand, and yet you did not kill me. 19 For if a man (Y)finds his enemy, will he let him go away [g]safely? May Yahweh therefore reward you with good in return for what you have done to me this day. 20 So now, behold, (Z)I know that you will surely be king, and that (AA)the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hand. 21 So now (AB)swear to me by Yahweh that you will not cut off my seed after me and that you will not destroy my name from my father’s household.” 22 So David swore to Saul. And Saul went to his home, but David and his men went up to (AC)the fortress.
The Death of Samuel
25 (AD)Then Samuel died; and all Israel gathered together and (AE)lamented for him and (AF)buried him at his house in Ramah. And David arose and went down to the (AG)wilderness of Paran.
David and Abigail
2 Now there was a man in (AH)Maon whose work was in (AI)Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep and one thousand goats. And it happened, while (AJ)he was shearing his sheep in Carmel 3 (now the man’s name was Nabal, and his (AK)wife’s name was Abigail. And the woman was good in insight and beautiful in appearance, but the man was harsh and evil in his dealings, and he was (AL)a Calebite), 4 that David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep. 5 So David sent ten young men; and David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, come to Nabal, and greet him in my name; 6 and thus you shall say, ‘[h]Have a long life; (AM)peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have. 7 So now I have heard (AN)that you have shearers; now your shepherds have been with us; and we have not dishonored them, (AO)nor have they missed anything all the days they were in Carmel. 8 Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your eyes, for we have come on (AP)a [i]festive day. Please give whatever you find at hand to your servants and to your son, to David.’”
9 Then David’s young men came and spoke to Nabal according to all these words in David’s name. Then they waited. 10 But Nabal answered David’s servants and said, “(AQ)Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants today who are each breaking away from his master. 11 Shall I then (AR)take my bread and my water and my meat that I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give it to men [j]whose origin I do not know?” 12 So David’s young men went back on their way and returned; and they came and told him according to all these words. 13 Then David said to his men, “Each of you gird on his sword.” So each man girded on his sword. And David also girded on his sword, and about (AS)four hundred men went up behind David, and two hundred (AT)stayed with the baggage.
14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, “Behold, David sent messengers from the wilderness to [k](AU)greet our master, and he rushed at them angrily. 15 Yet the men were very good to us, and we were not (AV)dishonored, nor did we miss anything [l]as long as we went about with them, while we were in the field. 16 (AW)They were a wall to us both by night and by day, all the time we were with them shepherding the sheep. 17 So now, know and see what you should do, for evil is decided against our master and against all his household; and he is such a [m]vile man that no one can speak to him.”
Abigail’s Discernment
18 Then Abigail hurried and (AX)took two hundred loaves of bread and two [n]jugs of wine and five sheep already prepared and [o]five seahs of roasted grain and one hundred clusters of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs, and loaded them on donkeys. 19 Then she said to her young men, “(AY)Go on before me; behold, I am coming after you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal. 20 So it was happening, as she was riding on her donkey and coming down by the hidden part of the mountain, that behold, David and his men were coming down toward her; and she met them. 21 Now David had said, “Surely for a lie I have guarded all that this man has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him; and he has (AZ)returned me evil for good. 22 (BA)May God do so to the enemies of David, and more also, (BB)if by morning I leave as much as one [p]male of any who belong to him.”
23 Then Abigail saw David; so she hurried and dismounted from her donkey and fell on her face [q]before David (BC)and bowed herself to the ground. 24 And she fell at his feet and said, “On me [r]alone, my lord, be the blame. And please let your maidservant speak in your ears, and listen to the words of your maidservant. 25 Please do not let my lord [s]pay attention to this [t]vile man, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. [u]Nabal is his name, and wicked foolishness is with him; but I your maidservant did not see the young men of my lord whom you sent.
26 “So now, my lord, as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives, since Yahweh has restrained you from [v]shedding blood, and (BD)from saving yourself by your own hand, so now, (BE)let your enemies and those who seek evil against my lord, be as Nabal. 27 So now let (BF)this [w]gift which your servant-woman has brought to my lord be given to the young men who [x]went about with my lord. 28 Please forgive (BG)the transgression of your maidservant; for (BH)Yahweh will certainly make for my lord an enduring house because my lord is (BI)fighting the battles of Yahweh, and (BJ)evil will not be found in you all your days. 29 And should anyone rise up to pursue you and to seek your [y]life, then the [z]life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living with Yahweh your God; but the [aa]lives of your enemies (BK)He will sling out [ab]as from the hollow of a sling. 30 And it will be that when Yahweh does for my lord according to all the good that He has spoken concerning you, and (BL)appoints you ruler over Israel, 31 then this will not [ac]cause stumbling or a troubled heart to my lord, both by having shed blood without cause and by my lord having saved himself. (BM)When Yahweh deals well with my lord, then remember your maidservant.”
32 Then David said to Abigail, “(BN)Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me, 33 and blessed be your discernment, and blessed be you, (BO)who have kept me this day from [ad]bloodshed and from saving myself by my own hand. 34 Nevertheless, as Yahweh, the God of Israel, lives, (BP)who has restrained me from harming you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, surely there would not have been left to Nabal until the morning light as much as one [ae]male.” 35 So David received from her hand what she had brought him and said to her, “(BQ)Go up to your house in peace. See, I have listened to your voice and [af](BR)granted your request.”
36 Then Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, he was holding (BS)a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal’s heart was merry within him, (BT)for he was very drunk; so (BU)she did not tell him anything small or great until the morning light. 37 But in the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him so that he became as a stone. 38 Now it happened that about ten days later, (BV)Yahweh smote Nabal, and he died.
Abigail Becomes David’s Wife
39 Then David heard that Nabal was dead, so he said, “Blessed be Yahweh, who has (BW)pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal and (BX)has kept back His servant from evil. Yahweh has also returned the evil of Nabal on his own head.” Then David sent [ag](BY)a proposal to Abigail, to take her as his wife. 40 Then the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel and spoke to her, saying, “David has sent us to you to take you as his wife.” 41 And she arose (BZ)and bowed with her [ah]face to the ground and said, “Behold, your maidservant is a servant-woman (CA)to wash the feet of my lord’s servants.” 42 Then (CB)Abigail hurried and arose, and she rode on a donkey, with her five young women who [ai]went about with her; and she went after the messengers of David and became his wife.
43 David had also taken Ahinoam of (CC)Jezreel, and (CD)they both became his wives.
44 Now Saul had given (CE)Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was from (CF)Gallim.
I and the Father Are One
22 At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place at Jerusalem; 23 it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple in the Portico of (A)Solomon. 24 (B)The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, “How long [a]will You keep us in suspense? If You are the [b]Christ, tell us (C)openly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “(D)I told you, and you do not believe; (E)the works that I do in My Father’s name, these bear witness of Me. 26 But you do not believe because (F)you are not of My sheep. 27 My sheep (G)hear My voice, and (H)I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give (I)eternal life to them, and they will never perish—ever; and (J)no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 [c]My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 (K)I and the Father are [d]one.”
31 The Jews (L)picked up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” 33 The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for (M)blasphemy; and because You, being a man, (N)make Yourself God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in (O)your (P)Law, ‘(Q)I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him, whom the Father (R)sanctified and (S)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘(T)I am the Son of God’? 37 (U)If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe (V)the works, so that you may know and continue knowing that (W)the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.” 39 Therefore (X)they were seeking again to seize Him, and (Y)He eluded their grasp.
40 And He went away (Z)again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He was staying there. 41 And many came to Him and were saying, “While John did no (AA)sign, yet (AB)everything John said about this man was true.” 42 (AC)And many believed in Him there.
I Love Yahweh
116 (A)I love Yahweh, because He (B)hears
My voice and my supplications.
2 Because He has (C)inclined His ear to me,
So I shall call upon Him in all my days.
3 The (D)cords of death encompassed me
And the [a]distresses of Sheol found me;
I found distress and sorrow.
4 Then (E)I called upon the name of Yahweh:
“O Yahweh, I beseech You, [b](F)provide my soul escape!”
5 (G)Gracious is Yahweh, and (H)righteous;
And our God is (I)compassionate.
6 Yahweh keeps (J)the simple;
I was (K)brought low, and He saved me.
7 Return to your (L)rest, O my soul,
For Yahweh has (M)dealt bountifully with you.
8 For You have (N)rescued my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
My feet from stumbling.
9 I shall walk before Yahweh
In the [c](O)land of the living.
10 I (P)believed when I said,
“I am (Q)greatly afflicted.”
11 I (R)said in my alarm,
“(S)All men are liars.”
12 What shall I (T)give to Yahweh in return
For all His (U)bountiful dealings [d]with me?
13 I shall lift up the (V)cup of [e]salvation
And (W)call upon the name of Yahweh.
14 I shall (X)pay my vows to Yahweh,
Oh may it be (Y)in the presence of all His people.
15 (Z)Precious in the sight of Yahweh
Is the death of His holy ones.
16 O Yahweh, [f]surely I am (AA)Your slave,
I am Your slave, the (AB)son of Your maidservant,
You have (AC)loosed my bonds.
17 To You I shall offer (AD)a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And (AE)call upon the name of Yahweh.
18 I shall (AF)pay my vows to Yahweh,
Oh may it be in the presence of all His people,
19 In the (AG)courts of the house of Yahweh,
In the midst of you, O (AH)Jerusalem.
[g]Praise Yah!
