Ish-bosheth Murdered
4 Now when [a]Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, heard that (A)Abner had died in Hebron, [b](B)he lost courage, and all Israel was disturbed. 2 Saul’s son had two men who were commanders of bands: the name of the one was Baanah and the name of the other Rechab, sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, of the sons of Benjamin (for (C)Beeroth is also considered (D)part of Benjamin, 3 and the Beerothites fled to (E)Gittaim and have been aliens there until this day).
4 Now (F)Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son crippled in his feet. He was five years old when the (G)report of Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel, and his nurse took him up and fled. And it happened that in her hurry to flee, he fell and became lame. And his name was [c](H)Mephibosheth.
5 So the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, departed and came to the house of (I)Ish-bosheth in the heat of the day while he was taking his midday rest. 6 [d]They came to the middle of the house as [e]if to get wheat, and (J)they struck him in the belly; and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped. 7 Now when they came into the house, as he was lying on his bed in his bedroom, they struck him and killed him and beheaded him. And they took his head and [f](K)traveled by way of the Arabah all night. 8 Then they brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David at Hebron and said to the king, “Behold, the head of Ish-bosheth (L)the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life; thus the Lord has given my lord the king vengeance this day on Saul and his [g]descendants.”
9 David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said to them, “As the Lord lives, (M)who has redeemed my life from all distress, 10 (N)when one told me, saying, ‘Behold, Saul is dead,’ and [h]thought he was bringing good news, I seized him and killed him in Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news. 11 How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous man in his own house on his bed, shall I not now (O)require his blood from your hand and [i]destroy you from the earth?” 12 Then (P)David commanded the young men, and they killed them and cut off their hands and feet and hung them up beside the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth (Q)and buried it in the grave of Abner in Hebron.
David King over All Israel
5 (R)Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and [j]said, “Behold, we are (S)your bone and your flesh. 2 Previously, when Saul was king over us, (T)you were the one who led Israel out and in. And the Lord said to you, ‘(U)You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be (V)a ruler over Israel.’” 3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David (W)made a covenant with them before the Lord at Hebron; then (X)they anointed David king over Israel. 4 David was (Y)thirty years old when he became king, and (Z)he reigned forty years. 5 At Hebron (AA)he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.
6 (AB)Now the king and his men went to (AC)Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, and they said to [k]David, “You shall not come in here, but the blind and lame will turn you away”; [l]thinking, “David cannot enter here.” 7 Nevertheless, David captured the stronghold of Zion, that is (AD)the city of David. 8 David said on that day, “Whoever would strike the Jebusites, let him reach the lame and the blind, who are hated by David’s soul, through the water tunnel.” Therefore they say, “The blind or the lame shall not come into the house.” 9 So David lived in the stronghold and called it (AE)the city of David. And David built all around from the [m](AF)Millo and inward. 10 (AG)David became greater and greater, for the Lord God of hosts was with him.
11 (AH)Then Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees and carpenters and stonemasons; and (AI)they built a house for David. 12 And David realized that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, and that He had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
13 Meanwhile (AJ)David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he came from Hebron; and more sons and daughters were born to David. 14 Now (AK)these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet.
War with the Philistines
17 When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, (AL)all the Philistines went up to seek out David; and when David heard of it, he went down to the (AM)stronghold. 18 Now the Philistines came and spread themselves out in (AN)the valley of Rephaim. 19 Then (AO)David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them into my hand?” And (AP)the Lord said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.” 20 So David came to (AQ)Baal-perazim and [n]defeated them there; and he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me like the breakthrough of waters.” Therefore he named that place [o]Baal-perazim. 21 They abandoned their idols there, so (AR)David and his men carried them away.
22 Now (AS)the Philistines came up once again and spread themselves out in the valley of Rephaim. 23 When (AT)David inquired of the Lord, He said, “You shall not go directly up; circle around behind them and come at them in front of the [p]balsam trees. 24 It shall be, when (AU)you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the [q]balsam trees, then you shall act promptly, for then (AV)the Lord will have gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.” 25 Then David did so, just as the Lord had commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from [r](AW)Geba [s]as far as (AX)Gezer.
Peril in Moving the Ark
6 (AY)Now David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2 And David arose and went with all the people who were with him to [t](AZ)Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God which is called by the (BA)Name, the very name of the Lord of hosts who (BB)is [u]enthroned above the cherubim. 3 They [v]placed the ark of God on (BC)a new cart that they might bring it from the house of Abinadab which was on the hill; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were leading the new cart. 4 So (BD)they brought it with the ark of God from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill; and Ahio was walking ahead of the ark. 5 Meanwhile, David and all the house of Israel (BE)were celebrating before the Lord (BF)with all kinds of instruments made of [w]fir wood, and with lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets and cymbals.
6 But when they came to the (BG)threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah (BH)reached out toward the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen nearly upset it. 7 And the anger of the Lord burned against Uzzah, and (BI)God struck him down there for [x]his irreverence; and he died there by the ark of God. 8 David became angry because [y]of the Lord’s outburst against Uzzah, and that place is called [z]Perez-uzzah to this day. 9 So (BJ)David was afraid of the Lord that day; and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” 10 And David was unwilling to move the ark of the Lord into the city of David with him; but David took it aside to the house of (BK)Obed-edom the Gittite. 11 Thus the ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, and the Lord (BL)blessed Obed-edom and all his household.
The Ark Is Brought to Jerusalem
12 Now it was told King David, saying, “The Lord has blessed the house of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, on account of the ark of God.” (BM)David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into (BN)the city of David with gladness. 13 And so it was, that when the (BO)bearers of the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed an (BP)ox and a fatling. 14 And (BQ)David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, and David was [aa](BR)wearing a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouting and the sound of the trumpet.
16 Then it happened as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David that (BS)Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart.
17 So they brought in the ark of the Lord and set it (BT)in its place inside the tent which David had pitched for it; and (BU)David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 18 When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the peace offering, (BV)he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts. 19 Further, he distributed to all the people, to all the multitude of Israel, both to men and women, a cake of bread and one of dates and one of raisins to each one. Then all the people departed each to his house.
20 But when David returned to bless his household, Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel distinguished himself today! (BW)He uncovered himself today in the eyes of his servants’ maids as one of the (BX)foolish ones shamelessly uncovers himself!” 21 So David said to Michal, “(BY)It was before the Lord, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel; therefore I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will be more lightly esteemed than this and will be humble in my own eyes, but with the maids of whom you have spoken, with them I will be distinguished.” 23 Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.
31 Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus *said, “Now [a]is (A)the Son of Man (B)glorified, and (C)God [b]is glorified in Him; 32 [c]if God is glorified in Him, (D)God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately. 33 (E)Little children, I am with you (F)a little while longer. (G)You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ 34 A (H)new commandment I give to you, (I)that you love one another, (J)even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 (K)By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
36 Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “(L)Where I go, you cannot follow Me now; but (M)you will follow later.” 37 Peter *said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? (N)I will lay down my life for You.” 38 Jesus *answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, (O)a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.
Jesus Comforts His Disciples
14 “(P)Do not let your heart be troubled; [d]believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for (Q)I go to prepare a place for you. 3 If I go and prepare a place for you, (R)I will come again and receive you to Myself, that (S)where I am, there you may be also. 4 And you know the way where I am going.” 5 (T)Thomas *said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” 6 Jesus *said to him, “I am (U)the way, and (V)the truth, and (W)the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
Oneness with the Father
7 (X)If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you (Y)know Him, and have (Z)seen Him.”
8 (AA)Philip *said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus *said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? (AB)He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (AC)I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? (AD)The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works. 11 Believe Me that (AE)I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise (AF)believe because of the works themselves. 12 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and (AG)greater works than these he will do; because (AH)I go to the Father. 13 (AI)Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that (AJ)the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask Me anything (AK)in My name, I will do it.
Gimel.
17 (A)Deal bountifully with Your servant,
That I may live and keep Your word.
18 Open my eyes, that I may behold
Wonderful things from Your law.
19 I am a (B)stranger in the earth;
Do not hide Your commandments from me.
20 My soul is crushed [a](C)with longing
After Your ordinances at all times.
21 You (D)rebuke the arrogant, [b]the (E)cursed,
Who (F)wander from Your commandments.
22 (G)Take away reproach and contempt from me,
For I (H)observe Your testimonies.
23 Even though (I)princes sit and talk against me,
Your servant (J)meditates on Your statutes.
24 Your testimonies also are my (K)delight;
They are [c]my counselors.
Daleth.
25 My (L)soul cleaves to the dust;
(M)Revive me (N)according to Your word.
26 I have told of my ways, and You have answered me;
(O)Teach me Your statutes.
27 Make me understand the way of Your precepts,
So I will (P)meditate on Your wonders.
28 My (Q)soul [d]weeps because of grief;
(R)Strengthen me according to Your word.
29 Remove the false way from me,
And graciously grant me Your law.
30 I have chosen the faithful way;
I have [e]placed Your ordinances before me.
31 I (S)cling to Your testimonies;
O Lord, do not put me to shame!
32 I shall run the way of Your commandments,
For You will (T)enlarge my heart.
