2 Samuel 7-8

David Plans to Build a Temple

(A)Now it came about when the king lived in his house, and the Lord had given him rest on every side from all his enemies, that the king said to (B)Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in (C)a house of cedar, but the ark of God (D)dwells within tent curtains.” Nathan said to the king, “(E)Go, do all that is in your mind, for the Lord is with you.”

But in the same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, “Go and say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord, “(F)Are you the one who should build Me a house to dwell in? For (G)I have not dwelt in a house since the day I brought up the sons of Israel from Egypt, even to this day; but I have been moving about (H)in a tent, even in a [a]tabernacle. (I)Wherever I have gone with all the sons of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the tribes of Israel, (J)which I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’”’

God’s Covenant with David

“Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, “(K)I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, (L)to be ruler over My people Israel. (M)I have been with you wherever you have gone and (N)have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth. 10 I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and (O)will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, (P)nor will the [b]wicked afflict them any more as formerly, 11 even (Q)from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and (R)I will give you rest from all your enemies. The Lord also declares to you that (S)the Lord will make a house for you. 12 (T)When your days are complete and you (U)lie down with your fathers, (V)I will raise up your [c]descendant after you, who will come forth from [d]you, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 (W)He shall build a house for My name, and (X)I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 (Y)I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; (Z)when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men, 15 but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, (AA)as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 (AB)Your house and your kingdom shall endure before [e]Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”’” 17 In accordance with all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

David’s Prayer

18 Then David the king went in and sat before the Lord, and he said, “(AC)Who am I, O Lord [f]God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far? 19 And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, O Lord God, (AD)for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. And (AE)this is the [g]custom of man, O Lord God. 20 Again what more can David say to You? For (AF)You know Your servant, O Lord God! 21 (AG)For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your servant know. 22 For this reason (AH)You are great, O Lord God; for (AI)there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, (AJ)according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23 And (AK)what one nation on the earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people and to make a name for Himself, and (AL)to do a great thing for You and awesome things for Your land, before (AM)Your people whom (AN)You have redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, from nations and their gods? 24 For (AO)You have established for Yourself Your people Israel as Your own people forever, and (AP)You, O Lord, have become their God. 25 Now therefore, O Lord God, the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house, confirm it forever, and do as You have spoken, 26 (AQ)that Your name may be magnified forever, by saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel’; and may the house of Your servant David be established before You. 27 For You, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have [h]made a revelation to Your servant, saying, ‘(AR)I will build you a house’; therefore Your servant has found [i]courage to pray this prayer to You. 28 Now, O Lord God, You are God, and (AS)Your words are truth, and You have [j]promised this good thing to Your servant. 29 Now therefore, may it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You. For You, O Lord God, have spoken; and (AT)with Your blessing may the house of Your servant be blessed forever.”

David’s Triumphs

(AU)Now after this it came about that David [k]defeated the Philistines and subdued them; and David took [l]control of the chief city from the hand of the Philistines.

(AV)He [m]defeated (AW)Moab, and measured them with the line, making them lie down on the ground; and he measured two lines to put to death and one full line to keep alive. And (AX)the Moabites became servants to David, (AY)bringing tribute.

Then David [n]defeated (AZ)Hadadezer, the son of Rehob king of Zobah, as (BA)he went to restore his [o]rule at the [p]River. David captured from him 1,700 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers; and David (BB)hamstrung the chariot horses, but reserved enough of them for 100 chariots. When (BC)the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer, king of Zobah, David [q]killed 22,000 Arameans. Then David put garrisons among the Arameans of Damascus, and (BD)the Arameans became servants to David, bringing tribute. And (BE)the Lord helped David wherever he went. David took the shields of gold which were [r]carried by the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. From [s]Betah and from (BF)Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took a very large amount of bronze.

Now when Toi king of (BG)Hamath heard that David had [t]defeated all the army of Hadadezer, 10 Toi sent [u]Joram his son to King David to [v]greet him and bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and [w]defeated him; for Hadadezer [x]had been at war with Toi. And [y]Joram brought with him articles of silver, of gold and of bronze. 11 King David also (BH)dedicated these to the Lord, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated from all the nations which he had subdued: 12 from [z]Aram and (BI)Moab and (BJ)the sons of Ammon and (BK)the Philistines and (BL)Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

13 So (BM)David made a name for himself when he returned from [aa]killing 18,000 [ab]Arameans in (BN)the Valley of Salt. 14 He put garrisons in Edom. In all Edom he put garrisons, and (BO)all the Edomites became servants to David. And (BP)the Lord helped David wherever he went.

15 So David reigned over all Israel; and David [ac]administered justice and righteousness for all his people. 16 (BQ)Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and (BR)Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was (BS)recorder. 17 (BT)Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were (BU)priests, and Seraiah was (BV)secretary. 18 (BW)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada [ad]was over the (BX)Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were [ae](BY)chief ministers.

John 14:15-31

15 (A)If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

Role of the Spirit

16 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another [a](B)Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is (C)the Spirit of truth, (D)whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; (E)I will come to you. 19 [b](F)After a little while (G)the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; (H)because I live, you will live also. 20 (I)In that day you will know that (J)I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21 (K)He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and (L)he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will (M)disclose Myself to him.” 22 (N)Judas (not Iscariot) *said to Him, “Lord, what then has happened (O)that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered and said to him, (P)If anyone loves Me, he will (Q)keep My word; and (R)My Father will love him, and We (S)will come to him and make Our abode with him. 24 He who does not love Me (T)does not keep My words; and (U)the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. 26 But the (V)Helper, the Holy Spirit, (W)whom the Father will send in My name, (X)He will teach you all things, and (Y)bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. 27 (Z)Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. (AA)Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. 28 (AB)You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and (AC)I will come to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because (AD)I go to the Father, for (AE)the Father is greater than I. 29 Now (AF)I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe. 30 I will not speak much more with you, for (AG)the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me; 31 but so that the world may know that I love the Father, [c]I do exactly as (AH)the Father commanded Me. Get up, (AI)let us go from here.

Psalm 119:33-48

He.

33 (A)Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes,
And I shall observe it to the end.
34 (B)Give me understanding, that I may (C)observe Your law
And keep it (D)with all my heart.
35 Make me walk in the (E)path of Your commandments,
For I (F)delight in it.
36 (G)Incline my heart to Your testimonies
And not to (H)dishonest gain.
37 Turn away my (I)eyes from looking at vanity,
And (J)revive me in Your ways.
38 (K)Establish Your [a]word to Your servant,
[b]As that which produces reverence for You.
39 (L)Turn away my reproach which I dread,
For Your ordinances are good.
40 Behold, I (M)long for Your precepts;
Revive me through Your righteousness.

Vav.

41 May Your (N)lovingkindnesses also come to me, O Lord,
Your salvation (O)according to Your [c]word;
42 So I will have an (P)answer for him who (Q)reproaches me,
For I trust in Your word.
43 And do not take the word of truth utterly out of my mouth,
For I [d](R)wait for Your ordinances.
44 So I will (S)keep Your law continually,
Forever and ever.
45 And I will (T)walk [e]at liberty,
For I (U)seek Your precepts.
46 I will also speak of Your testimonies (V)before kings
And shall not be ashamed.
47 I shall [f](W)delight in Your commandments,
Which I (X)love.
48 And I shall lift up my hands to Your commandments,
Which I (Y)love;
And I will (Z)meditate on Your statutes.

Proverbs 15:33

33 The [a]fear of the Lord is the instruction for wisdom,
And before honor comes humility.
