Now the chiefs of Edom were: chief Timna, chief [q]Aliah, chief Jetheth, 52 chief Oholibamah, chief Elah, chief Pinon, 53 chief Kenaz, chief Teman, chief Mibzar, 54 chief Magdiel, chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom.

Acts 23:11-35

11 But on (A)the night immediately following, the Lord stood at his side and said, (B)Take courage; for (C)as you have (D)solemnly witnessed to My cause at Jerusalem, so you must witness at Rome also.”

A Conspiracy to Kill Paul

12 When it was day, (E)the Jews formed a [a]conspiracy and (F)bound themselves under an oath, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul. 13 There were more than forty who formed this plot. 14 They came to the chief priests and the elders and said, “We have (G)bound ourselves under a solemn oath to taste nothing until we have killed Paul. 15 Now therefore, you [b]and (H)the [c]Council notify the [d]commander to bring him down to you, as though you were going to determine his case by a more thorough investigation; and we for our part are ready to slay him before he comes near the place.”

16 But the son of Paul’s sister heard of their ambush, [e]and he came and entered (I)the barracks and told Paul. 17 Paul called one of the centurions to him and said, “Lead this young man to the [f]commander, for he has something to report to him.” 18 So he took him and led him to the [g]commander and *said, “Paul (J)the prisoner called me to him and asked me to lead this young man to you since he has something to tell you.” 19 The [h]commander took him by the hand and stepping aside, began to inquire of him privately, “What is it that you have to report to me?” 20 And he said, “(K)The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down tomorrow to (L)the [i]Council, as though they were going to inquire somewhat more thoroughly about him. 21 So do not [j]listen to them, for more than forty of them are (M)lying in wait for him who have (N)bound themselves under a curse not to eat or drink until they slay him; and now they are ready and waiting for the promise from you.” 22 So the [k]commander let the young man go, instructing him, “Tell no one that you have notified me of these things.”

Paul Moved to Caesarea

23 And he called to him two of the centurions and said, “Get two hundred soldiers ready by [l]the third hour of the night to proceed to (O)Caesarea, [m]with seventy horsemen and two hundred [n]spearmen.” 24 They were also to provide mounts to put Paul on and bring him safely to (P)Felix the governor. 25 And he wrote a letter having this form:

26 “Claudius Lysias, to the (Q)most excellent governor Felix, (R)greetings.

27 “When this man was arrested by the Jews and was about to be slain by them, (S)I came up to them with the troops and rescued him, (T)having learned that he was a Roman. 28 “And (U)wanting to ascertain the charge for which they were accusing him, I (V)brought him down to their [o](W)Council; 29 and I found him to be accused over (X)questions about their Law, but [p]under (Y)no accusation deserving death or [q]imprisonment.

30 “When I was (Z)informed that there would be (AA)a plot against the man, I sent him to you at once, also instructing (AB)his accusers to [r]bring charges against him before you.”

31 So the soldiers, in accordance with their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris. 32 But the next day, leaving (AC)the horsemen to go on with him, they returned to (AD)the barracks. 33 When these had come to (AE)Caesarea and delivered the letter to (AF)the governor, they also presented Paul to him. 34 When he had read it, he asked from what (AG)province he was, and when he learned that (AH)he was from Cilicia, 35 he said, “I will give you a hearing after your (AI)accusers arrive also,” giving orders for him to be (AJ)kept in Herod’s [s]Praetorium.

Psalm 3

Morning Prayer of Trust in God.

A Psalm of David, when [a]he fled from Absalom his son.

O Lord, how (A)my adversaries have increased!
Many are rising up against me.
Many are saying [b]of my soul,
“There is no [c](B)deliverance for him in God.” [d]Selah.

But You, O Lord, are (C)a shield about me,
My (D)glory, and the One who (E)lifts my head.
I was crying to the Lord with my voice,
And He (F)answered me from (G)His holy [e]mountain. Selah.
[f]I (H)lay down and slept;
I awoke, for the Lord sustains me.
I will (I)not be afraid of ten thousands of people
Who have (J)set themselves against me round about.

(K)Arise, O Lord; (L)save me, O my God!
For You [g]have (M)smitten all my enemies on the [h]cheek;
You [i]have (N)shattered the teeth of the wicked.
[j](O)Salvation belongs to the Lord;
Your (P)blessing [k]be upon Your people! Selah.

Proverbs 18:14-15

14 The (A)spirit of a man can endure his sickness,
But as for a (B)broken spirit who can bear it?
15 The [a](C)mind of the prudent acquires knowledge,
And the (D)ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
