Version
2 Chronicles 8:11-10:19

11 (A)Then Solomon brought Pharaoh’s daughter up from the city of David to the house which he had built for her, for he said, “My wife shall not dwell in the house of David king of Israel, because [a]the places are holy where the ark of the Lord has entered.”

12 Then Solomon offered burnt offerings to the Lord on (B)the altar of the Lord which he had built before the porch; 13 and (C)did so according to the daily rule, offering them up (D)according to the commandment of Moses, for (E)the sabbaths, (F)the new moons and the (G)three annual feasts—the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks and the Feast of Booths.

14 Now according to the ordinance of his father David, he appointed (H)the divisions of the priests for their service, and (I)the Levites for their duties of praise and ministering before the priests according to the daily rule, and (J)the gatekeepers by their divisions at every gate; for (K)David the man of God had so commanded. 15 And they did not depart from the commandment of the king to the priests and Levites in any manner or concerning the storehouses.

16 Thus all the work of Solomon was carried out [b]from the day of the foundation of the house of the Lord, and until it was finished. So the house of the Lord was completed.

17 Then Solomon went to (L)Ezion-geber and to (M)Eloth on the seashore in the land of Edom. 18 And Huram by his servants sent him ships and servants who knew the sea; and they went with Solomon’s servants to Ophir, and (N)took from there four hundred and fifty talents of gold and brought them to King Solomon.

Visit of the Queen of Sheba

(O)Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to Jerusalem to test Solomon with difficult questions. She had a very large retinue, with camels carrying spices and a large amount of gold and precious stones; and when she came to Solomon, she spoke with him about all that was on her heart. Solomon [c]answered all her questions; nothing was hidden from Solomon which he did not [d]explain to her. When the queen of Sheba had seen the wisdom of Solomon, the house which he had built, the food at his table, the seating of his servants, the attendance of his ministers and their attire, his cupbearers and their attire, and [e]his stairway by which he went up to the house of the Lord, she was breathless. Then she said to the king, “It was a true report which I heard in my own land about your words and your wisdom. Nevertheless I did not believe their reports until I came and my eyes had seen it. And behold, the half of the greatness of your wisdom was not told me. You surpass the report that I heard. How [f]blessed are your men, how [g]blessed are these your servants who stand before you continually and hear your wisdom. Blessed be the Lord your God who delighted in you, (P)setting you on His throne as king for the Lord your God; (Q)because your God loved Israel establishing them forever, therefore He made you king over them, to do justice and righteousness.” Then she gave the king one hundred and twenty talents of gold and a very great amount of spices and precious stones; there had never been spice like that which the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

10 The servants of Huram and the servants of Solomon (R)who brought gold from Ophir, also brought algum trees and precious stones. 11 From the algum trees the king made steps for the house of the Lord and for the king’s palace, and lyres and harps for the singers; and none like that was seen before in the land of Judah.

12 King Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all her desire which she requested besides a return for what she had brought to the king. Then she turned and went to her own land with her servants.

Solomon’s Wealth and Power

13 (S)Now the weight of gold which came to Solomon in one year was 666 talents of gold, 14 besides that which the traders and merchants brought; and all (T)the kings of Arabia and the governors of the country brought gold and silver to Solomon. 15 King Solomon made 200 large shields of beaten gold, [h]using 600 shekels of beaten gold on each large shield. 16 He made 300 shields of beaten gold, [i]using three hundred shekels of gold on each shield, and the king put them in the house of the forest of Lebanon.

17 Moreover, the king made a great throne of ivory and overlaid it with pure gold. 18 There were six steps to the throne and a footstool in gold attached to the throne, and [j]arms [k]on each side of the seat, and two lions standing beside the [l]arms. 19 Twelve lions were standing there on the six steps on the one side and on the other; nothing like it was made for any other kingdom. 20 All King Solomon’s drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold; silver was not considered [m]valuable in the days of Solomon. 21 (U)For the king had ships which went to Tarshish with the servants of Huram; once every three years the ships of Tarshish came bringing gold and silver, ivory and apes and peacocks.

22 (V)So King Solomon became greater than all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom. 23 And all the kings of the earth were seeking the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom which God had put in his heart. 24 (W)They brought every man his gift, articles of silver and gold, garments, weapons, spices, horses and mules, so much year by year.

25 Now Solomon had (X)4,000 stalls for horses and chariots and 12,000 horsemen, and he stationed them in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem. 26 (Y)He was the ruler over all the kings from the Euphrates River even to the land of the Philistines, and as far as the border of Egypt. 27 (Z)The king made silver as common as stones in Jerusalem, and he made cedars as plentiful as sycamore trees that are in the [n]lowland. 28 (AA)And they were bringing horses for Solomon from Egypt and from all countries.

29 (AB)Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, from first to last, (AC)are they not written in the [o]records of Nathan the prophet, and in the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and in the visions of [p]Iddo the seer concerning Jeroboam the son of Nebat? 30 (AD)Solomon reigned forty years in Jerusalem over all Israel.

Death of Solomon

31 And Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in (AE)the city of his father David; and his son Rehoboam reigned in his place.

Rehoboam’s Reign of Folly

10 (AF)Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for (AG)he was in Egypt where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon), Jeroboam returned from Egypt. So they sent and summoned him. When Jeroboam and all Israel came, they spoke to Rehoboam, saying, “Your father made our (AH)yoke hard; now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.” He said to them, “Return to me again in three days.” So the people departed.

Then King Rehoboam (AI)consulted with the elders who had [q]served his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, “How do you counsel me to answer this people?” They spoke to him, saying, “If you will be kind to this people and please them and (AJ)speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.” But he (AK)forsook the counsel of the elders which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who grew up with him [r]and served him. So he said to them, “What counsel do you give that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?” 10 The young men who grew up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you shall say to the people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter for us.’ Thus you shall say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s loins! 11 Whereas my father loaded you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.’”

12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day as the king had [s]directed, saying, “Return to me on the third day.” 13 The king answered them harshly, and King Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the elders. 14 He spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, “[t]My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people, (AL)for it was a turn of events from God (AM)that the Lord might establish His word, which He spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

16 When all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them the people answered the king, saying,

(AN)What portion do we have in David?
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse.
Every man to your tents, O Israel;
Now look after your own house, David.”

(AO)So all Israel departed to their tents. 17 But as for the sons of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. 18 Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was (AP)over the forced labor, and the sons of Israel stoned him [u]to death. And King Rehoboam made haste to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem. 19 So (AQ)Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

Romans 8:9-25

However, you are not (A)in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God (B)dwells in you. But (C)if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 (D)If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is [a]alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who (E)raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, (F)He who raised (G)Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies [b]through His Spirit who dwells in you.

12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for (H)if you are living according to the flesh, you [c]must die; but if by the Spirit you are (I)putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are (J)being led by the Spirit of God, these are (K)sons of God. 15 For you (L)have not received a spirit of slavery [d]leading to fear again, but you (M)have received [e]a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “(N)Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself (O)testifies with our spirit that we are (P)children of God, 17 and if children, (Q)heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, (R)if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (S)are not worthy to be compared with the (T)glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the (U)anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for (V)the revealing of the (W)sons of God. 20 For the creation (X)was subjected to (Y)futility, not willingly, but (Z)because of Him who subjected it, [f]in hope 21 that (AA)the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation (AB)groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. 23 (AC)And not only this, but also we ourselves, having (AD)the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves (AE)groan within ourselves, (AF)waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, (AG)the redemption of our body. 24 For (AH)in hope we have been saved, but (AI)hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? 25 But (AJ)if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.

Psalm 18:16-36

16 He (A)sent from on high, He took me;
He drew me out of (B)many waters.
17 He (C)delivered me from my strong enemy,
And from those who hated me, for they were (D)too mighty for me.
18 They confronted me in (E)the day of my calamity,
But (F)the Lord was my stay.
19 He brought me forth also into a (G)broad place;
He rescued me, because (H)He delighted in me.

20 The Lord has (I)rewarded me according to my righteousness;
According to the (J)cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.
21 For I have (K)kept the ways of the Lord,
And have (L)not wickedly departed from my God.
22 For all (M)His ordinances were before me,
And I did not put away His (N)statutes from me.
23 I was also [a](O)blameless with Him,
And I (P)kept myself from my iniquity.
24 Therefore the Lord has (Q)recompensed me according to my righteousness,
According to the cleanness of my hands in His eyes.

25 With (R)the kind You show Yourself kind;
With the [b]blameless (S)You show Yourself blameless;
26 With the pure You show Yourself (T)pure,
And with the crooked (U)You show Yourself [c]astute.
27 For You (V)save an afflicted people,
But (W)haughty eyes You abase.
28 For You (X)light my lamp;
The Lord my God (Y)illumines my darkness.
29 For by You I can [d](Z)run upon a troop;
And by my God I can (AA)leap over a wall.

30 As for God, His way is [e](AB)blameless;
The (AC)word of the Lord is tried;
He is a (AD)shield to all who take refuge in Him.
31 For (AE)who is God, but the Lord?
And who is a (AF)rock, except our God,
32 The God who (AG)girds me with strength
And [f]makes my way [g](AH)blameless?
33 He (AI)makes my feet like hinds’ feet,
And (AJ)sets me upon my high places.
34 He (AK)trains my hands for battle,
So that my arms can (AL)bend a bow of bronze.
35 You have also given me (AM)the shield of Your salvation,
And Your (AN)right hand upholds me;
And (AO)Your [h]gentleness makes me great.
36 You (AP)enlarge my steps under me,
And my [i](AQ)feet have not slipped.

Proverbs 19:26

26 He (A)who assaults his father and drives his mother away
Is a shameful and disgraceful son.
