Ezra 4:24-6:22

24 Then the work on the house of God in Jerusalem stopped, and it was stopped until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

Rebuilding the House of God Begins Again

And the prophets, (A)Haggai the prophet and (B)Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them. Then (C)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak arose and began to rebuild the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and (D)the prophets of God were with them supporting them.

At that time (E)Tattenai, the governor of the province beyond the [a]River, and Shethar-bozenai and their colleagues came to them and spoke to them thus, “(F)Who issued you a decree to rebuild this house and to complete this structure?” (G)Then we told them accordingly what the names of the men were who were rebuilding this building. But (H)the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they did not stop them until a report could come to Darius, and then a document be returned concerning this.

Tattenai and Others Write to King Darius

This is the copy of the letter which (I)Tattenai, the governor of the province beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai and his colleagues (J)the officials, who were beyond the River, sent to Darius the king. They sent word to him in which it was written thus:

“To Darius the king, all peace.

Let it be known to the king that we have gone to the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, and it is being built with huge stones, and timber is being put within the walls; and that work is going on with all diligence and is succeeding in their hands.

Then we asked those elders and said to them thus, ‘Who issued you a decree to rebuild this house and to complete this structure?’

10 And we also asked them their names in order to make known to you, and that we might write down the names of the men who were at their head.

11 Thus they responded with a word to us, saying,

‘We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and are rebuilding the house that was built many years ago, (K)which a great king of Israel built and completed.

12 But (L)because our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, (M)He gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house and took the people away into exile in Babylon.

13 However, (N)in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, King Cyrus (O)issued a decree to rebuild this house of God.

14 Also (P)the gold and silver utensils of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple [b]in Jerusalem and brought them to the temple of Babylon, these King Cyrus took out from the temple of Babylon, and they were given to one (Q)whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had appointed governor.

15 He said to him, “Take these articles, go and deposit them in the temple [c]in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be rebuilt in its place.”

16 Then that Sheshbazzar came and (R)laid the foundations of the house of God [d]in Jerusalem; and from then until now it is being rebuilt, and it is (S)not yet finished.’

17 So now if it seems good to the king, (T)let a search be made in the king’s treasure house, which is there in Babylon, if it be that a decree was issued by King Cyrus to rebuild that house of God in Jerusalem; and let the king send to us his will concerning this matter.”

The Scroll with Cyrus’ Decree Is Found

Then King Darius issued a decree, and a (U)search was made in the [e]archives, where the treasures were deposited in Babylon. And in [f]Ecbatana in the fortress, which is (V)in the province of Media, a scroll was found and there was written in it as follows:

“Memorandum—

(W)In the first year of King Cyrus, Cyrus the king issued a decree:

Concerning the house of God in Jerusalem, let that house, the place where sacrifices are offered, be rebuilt and let its foundations be [g]retained, its height being [h]60 cubits and its width 60 cubits;

(X)with three layers of huge stones and [i]one layer of timbers. And let the cost be given from the [j]royal treasury.

And also let (Y)the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to Babylon, be returned and [k]brought to their places in the temple in Jerusalem; and you shall deposit them in the house of God.’

“Now (Z)Tattenai, governor of the province beyond the [l]River, Shethar-bozenai and their colleagues, the officials of the provinces beyond the River, [m]keep away from there.

Leave that work on the house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews rebuild that house of God in its designated place.

Moreover, (AA)I issue a decree concerning what you shall do for those elders of Judah in the rebuilding of that house of God: the full cost is to be given to those people from the royal treasury out of the tribute of the provinces beyond the River, and that without negligence.

Whatever is needed, both young bulls, rams, and lambs for a burnt offering to the God of heaven, and wheat, salt, wine, and anointing oil, according to what the priests in Jerusalem say, it is to be given to them daily without negligence,

10 that they may bring sweet-smelling sacrifices near to the God of heaven and (AB)pray for the life of the king and his sons.

11 And I issued a decree that (AC)any man who violates this edict, a timber shall be pulled out from his house and he shall be impaled on it and (AD)his house shall be made a refuse heap on account of this.

12 May the God who (AE)has caused His name to dwell there overthrow any king or people who [n]stretches out his hand to change it, so as to destroy that house of God in Jerusalem. I, Darius, have issued this decree, let it be done with all diligence!”

The Dedication of the House of God

13 Then (AF)Tattenai, the governor of the province beyond the River, Shethar-bozenai and their colleagues carried out the decree with all diligence, just as King Darius had sent. 14 And (AG)the elders of the Jews were building and succeeding through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. So they built and completed it according to the decree of the God of Israel and the decree (AH)of Cyrus, (AI)Darius, and (AJ)Artaxerxes king of Persia. 15 And this house was brought to completion [o]on the third day of the (AK)month Adar; it was the sixth year of the reign of King Darius.

16 And the sons of Israel, the priests, the Levites and the rest of the [p]exiles, (AL)celebrated the dedication of this house of God with joy. 17 They brought near for the dedication of this house of God 100 bulls, 200 rams, 400 lambs, and as a sin offering for all Israel (AM)12 male goats, corresponding to the number of the tribes of Israel. 18 Then they appointed the priests to (AN)their sections and the Levites in (AO)their divisions for the service of God [q]in Jerusalem, (AP)as it is written in the book of Moses.

Passover Celebrated

19 (AQ)And the exiles celebrated the Passover on (AR)the fourteenth of the first month. 20 (AS)For the priests and the Levites had cleansed themselves together; all of them were clean. Then (AT)they slaughtered the Passover lamb for all the exiles, both for their brothers the priests and for themselves. 21 Then the sons of Israel who returned from exile and (AU)all those who had separated themselves from (AV)the uncleanness of the nations of the land to join them, to seek Yahweh, the God of Israel, ate the Passover. 22 And (AW)they celebrated the Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days with gladness, for Yahweh had caused them to be glad and (AX)had turned the heart of (AY)the king of Assyria toward them to [r]strengthen them in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.

1 Corinthians 3:5-23

What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? (A)Servants through whom you believed, even (B)as the Lord gave to each one. (C)I planted, (D)Apollos watered, but (E)God was causing the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, but each will (F)receive his own [a]reward according to his own labor. For we are God’s (G)fellow workers; you are God’s [b](H)field, God’s (I)building.

10 According to (J)the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder (K)I laid a foundation, and (L)another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it. 11 For no one can lay a (M)foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, [c]precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 (N)each man’s work will become evident, for (O)the day will indicate it because it is revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test [d]the quality of each man’s work. 14 If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will (P)receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, but he himself will be saved, yet (Q)so as through fire.

16 (R)Do you not know that (S)you are a [e]sanctuary of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If any man destroys the [f]sanctuary of God, God will destroy him, for the [g]sanctuary of God is holy, and [h]that is what you are.

18 (T)Let no man deceive himself. (U)If any man among you thinks that he is wise in (V)this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise. 19 For (W)the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. For it is written, “He is (X)the one who catches the wise in their craftiness”; 20 and again, “(Y)The Lord knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are useless.” 21 So then (Z)let no one boast in men. For (AA)all things belong to you, 22 (AB)whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or (AC)life or death or things present or things to come; all things belong to you, 23 and (AD)you belong to Christ, and (AE)Christ belongs to God.

Psalm 29

The Voice of Yahweh

A Psalm of David.

29 (A)Ascribe to Yahweh, O [a]sons of the mighty,
Ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength.
Ascribe to Yahweh the glory of His name;
Worship Yahweh (B)in the splendor of holiness.

The (C)voice of Yahweh is upon the waters;
The God of glory (D)thunders,
Yahweh is over [b](E)many waters.
The voice of Yahweh is (F)powerful,
The voice of Yahweh is full of splendor.
The voice of Yahweh breaks the cedars;
Indeed, Yahweh breaks in pieces (G)the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon (H)skip like a calf,
And (I)Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of Yahweh hews out [c]flames of fire.
The voice of Yahweh causes the wilderness to tremble;
Yahweh causes the wilderness of (J)Kadesh to tremble.
The voice of Yahweh makes (K)the deer to calve
And strips the forests bare;
And (L)in His temple everything says, “Glory!”

10 Yahweh sat enthroned over the (M)flood;
Indeed, Yahweh sits as (N)King forever.
11 [d]Yahweh will give (O)strength to His people;
[e]Yahweh will bless His people with (P)peace.

Proverbs 20:26-27

26 A (A)wise king winnows the wicked,
And turns the (B)threshing wheel over them.
27 The [a](C)breath of man is the lamp of Yahweh,
Searching all the [b]innermost parts of his body.
