Job 12-15

Job Answers

12 Then Job answered and said,

“Truly then (A)you are the people,
And with you wisdom will die!
But (B)I have a heart of wisdom as well as you;
I do not fall short of you.
And [a]who does not know such things as these?
I am a (C)laughingstock to [b]my friends,
The one who called on God and He answered him;
The righteous and (D)blameless man is a laughingstock.
[c]As for upheaval, there is only contempt by the one who acts at ease,
But it is prepared for those whose feet slip.
The (E)tents of the destroyers are complacent,
And those who provoke God (F)are secure,
[d]Whom God brings (G)into their power.

“But now ask the beasts, and let them instruct you;
And the birds of the sky, and let them tell you.
Or muse to the earth, and let it instruct you;
And let the fish of the sea recount it to you.
Who among all these does not know
That (H)the hand of Yahweh has done this,
10 (I)In whose hand is the life of every living thing,
And (J)the breath of all the flesh of man?
11 Does not (K)the ear test words,
As the palate [e]tastes its food?
12 Wisdom is with (L)aged men,
With [f]long life is discernment.

Job Speaks of God’s Strength

13 “With Him are (M)wisdom and (N)might;
To Him belong counsel and (O)discernment.
14 Behold, He (P)pulls down, and it cannot be rebuilt;
He (Q)closes a man in, and it cannot be opened.
15 Behold, He (R)restrains the waters, and they dry up;
And He (S)sends them out, and they overturn the earth.
16 With Him are strength and sound wisdom;
The (T)misled and the misleader belong to Him.
17 He makes (U)counselors walk [g]barefoot
And makes fools of (V)judges.
18 He (W)opens the [h]bond of kings
And binds their loins with a belt.
19 He makes priests walk [i]barefoot
And subverts (X)the enduring ones.
20 He removes speech from the faithful
And (Y)takes away the discerning taste of the elders.
21 He (Z)pours contempt on nobles
And (AA)loosens the belt of the strong.
22 He (AB)reveals mysteries from the darkness
And brings out the shadows of death into light.
23 He (AC)makes the nations great, then makes them perish;
He [j]enlarges the nations, then leads them away.
24 He (AD)removes the heart of wisdom from the heads of the earth’s people
And makes them wander in a pathless [k]waste.
25 They (AE)grope in darkness with no light,
And He makes them (AF)wander about like a drunken man.

I Will Be Declared Righteous

13 (AG)Behold, my eye has seen all this;
My ear has heard and understood it.
(AH)What you know I also know;
I have not fallen short of you.

“But (AI)I would speak to [l]the Almighty,
And I desire to (AJ)argue with God.
But you (AK)cover me with lies;
You are all (AL)worthless physicians.
O that you would (AM)be completely silent,
And that it would become your wisdom!
Please hear my argument
And give heed to the contentions of my lips.
Will you (AN)speak what is unrighteous for God,
And speak what is deceitful for Him?
Will you (AO)show partiality for Him?
Will you contend for God?
Will it be well when He examines you?
Or (AP)will you deceive Him as one deceives a man?
10 He will surely reprove you
If you secretly (AQ)show partiality.
11 Will not (AR)His exaltedness terrify you,
And the dread of Him fall on you?
12 Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes;
Your defenses are defenses of clay.

13 (AS)Be silent before me so that I may speak;
Then let come on me what may.
14 Why should I take my flesh in my teeth
And (AT)put my life in my [m]hands?
15 [n](AU)Though He slay me,
I will hope in Him.
Nevertheless I (AV)will argue my ways [o]before Him.
16 This also will be my (AW)salvation,
For (AX)a godless man may not come before His presence.
17 [p]Listen carefully to my words,
And let my declaration fill your ears.
18 Behold now, I have (AY)arranged my case for justice;
I know that (AZ)I will be declared righteous.
19 (BA)Who will contend with me?
For now I am silent and (BB)will breathe my last.

20 “Only two things do not do to me,
Then I will not hide from Your face:
21 (BC)Move Your [q]hand far from me,
And let not the dread of You terrify me.
22 Then call, and (BD)I will answer;
Or let me speak, then respond to me.
23 (BE)How many are my iniquities and sins?
Make known to me my transgression and my sin.
24 Why do You (BF)hide Your face
And think of me as (BG)Your enemy?
25 Will You cause a (BH)driven leaf to tremble?
Or will You pursue the dry (BI)chaff?
26 For You write (BJ)bitter things against me
And (BK)make me to possess the iniquities of my youth.
27 You (BL)put my feet in the stocks
And kept watch over all my paths;
You [r]set a limit for the soles of my feet,
28 While [s]I am decaying like a (BM)rotten thing,
Like a garment that is moth-eaten.

If a Man Dies, Will He Live Again?

14 (BN)Man, who is born of woman,
Is [t]short-lived and (BO)full of turmoil.
(BP)Like a flower he comes forth and withers.
He also flees like (BQ)a shadow and does not stand.
You also (BR)open Your eyes on him
And (BS)bring [u]me into judgment with Yourself.
(BT)Who can make the clean out of the unclean?
No one!
Since his days are determined,
The (BU)number of his months is with You;
And his limits You have [v]set so that he cannot pass.
(BV)Turn Your gaze from him that he may cease from toil,
Until he accepts his day like a hired man.

“For there is hope for a tree,
When it is cut down, that it will change back sprouting again,
And its shoots will not cease.
Though its roots grow old in the ground
And its stump dies in the dry soil,
At the scent of water it will flourish
And put forth sprigs like a plant.
10 But (BW)man dies and lies prostrate.
Man (BX)breathes his last, and where is he?
11 As (BY)water [w]evaporates from the sea,
And a river becomes parched and dried up,
12 So (BZ)man lies down and does not rise.
Until the heavens are no longer,
[x]He will not awake nor be aroused out of [y]his sleep.

13 “Oh that You would conceal me in Sheol,
That You would hide me (CA)until Your anger returns to You,
That You would set a limit for me and remember me!
14 If a man dies, will he live again?
All the days of my labor I will wait
Until my change comes.
15 You will call, and I will answer You;
You will long for (CB)the work of Your hands.
16 For now You (CC)number my steps,
You do not (CD)keep watch over my sin.
17 My transgression is (CE)sealed up in a bag,
And You [z]cover up my iniquity.

18 “But the falling mountain [aa]crumbles away,
And the rock moves from its place;
19 Water wears away stones;
Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth;
So You (CF)make man’s hope perish.
20 You forever overpower him and he (CG)goes away;
You alter his appearance and send him away.
21 His sons achieve honor, but (CH)he does not know it;
Or they become insignificant, but he does not perceive it.
22 But his flesh pains him,
And he mourns only for himself.”

Eliphaz Says Job’s Lips Answer Against Him

15 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

“Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge
(CI)And fill his belly with the east wind?
Should he argue with a word that cannot be used,
Or with speech which is not profitable?
Indeed, you annul reverent fear
And cut off musing before God.
For (CJ)your iniquity teaches your mouth,
And you choose the tongue of (CK)the crafty.
Your (CL)own mouth condemns you, and not I;
And your own lips answer against you.

“Were you the first man to be born,
Or (CM)were you brought forth before the hills?
Do you hear the (CN)secret counsel of God,
And cut down wisdom only unto yourself?
(CO)What do you know that we do not know?
What do you understand that is not with us?
10 Both the (CP)gray-haired and the aged are among us,
Older than your father.
11 Are (CQ)the consolations of God too small for you,
Even the (CR)word spoken gently with you?
12 Why does your (CS)heart take you away?
And why do your eyes flash,
13 That you should turn your spirit against God
And allow such words to go out of your mouth?
14 What is man, that (CT)he should be pure,
Or (CU)he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 Behold, He puts no faith in His (CV)holy ones,
And the (CW)heavens are not pure in His sight;
16 How much less one who is (CX)abominable and corrupt,
Man, who (CY)drinks [ab]unrighteousness like water!

17 “I will tell you, listen to me;
And what I have beheld I will also recount;
18 What wise men have told,
And have not concealed from (CZ)their fathers,
19 To whom alone the land was given,
And no stranger passed among them.
20 The wicked man writhes (DA)in pain all his days,
And [ac]numbered are the years (DB)stored up for the ruthless.
21 [ad]Sounds of (DC)dread are in his ears;
(DD)While at peace the destroyer comes upon him.
22 He does not believe that he will (DE)return from darkness,
And he is destined for (DF)the sword.
23 He wanders about for food, saying, ‘Where is it?’
He knows that a day of (DG)darkness is ready at his hand.
24 Distress and anguish terrify him;
They overpower him like a king ready for the attack,
25 Because he has stretched out his hand against God
And (DH)magnifies himself against [ae]the Almighty.
26 He rushes [af]headlong at Him
With [ag]his massive shield.
27 For he has (DI)covered his face with his fat
And made his thighs heavy with flesh.
28 He has (DJ)dwelt in desolate cities,
In houses no one would inhabit,
Which are destined to become [ah]ruins.
29 He (DK)will not become rich, nor will his wealth endure;
And his grain will not stretch out over the land.
30 He will (DL)not be able to [ai]depart from darkness;
The (DM)flame will wither his shoots,
And by (DN)the breath of His mouth he will depart.
31 Let him not (DO)believe in emptiness, deceiving himself;
For emptiness will be his [aj]reward,
32 When (DP)his days are not yet fulfilled,
And his palm (DQ)branch is not green.
33 He will drop off his unripe grape like the vine,
And will (DR)cast off his flower like the olive tree.
34 For the company of (DS)the godless is barren,
And fire consumes (DT)the tents of [ak]the corrupt.
35 They (DU)conceive [al]trouble and give birth to wickedness,
And their [am]belly prepares deception.”

1 Corinthians 15:29-58

29 Otherwise, what will those do who are baptized [a]for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then are they baptized for them? 30 Why are we also (A)in danger every hour? 31 I affirm, brothers, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, (B)I die daily. 32 If [b]from human motives I (C)fought with wild beasts at (D)Ephesus, what does it profit me? If the dead are not raised, (E)let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. 33 (F)Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” 34 (G)Become righteously sober-minded, and stop sinning; for some have (H)no knowledge of God. (I)I speak this to your shame.

The Resurrection Body

35 But (J)someone will say, “How are (K)the dead raised? And with what kind of body do they come?” 36 (L)You fool! That which you (M)sow does not come to life unless it dies; 37 and that which you sow, you do not sow the body which is to be, but a bare grain, perhaps of wheat or of [c]something else. 38 But God gives it a body just as He wished, and (N)to each of the seeds a body of its own. 39 All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one flesh of men, and another flesh of beasts, and another flesh of birds, and another of fish. 40 There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is one, and the glory of the earthly is another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory.

42 (O)So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown [d](P)a corruptible body, it is raised [e](Q)an incorruptible body; 43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in (R)glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a (S)natural body, it is raised a (T)spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 So also it is written, “The first (U)man, Adam, became a living soul.” The (V)last Adam became a (W)life-giving spirit. 46 However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural; then the spiritual. 47 The first man is (X)from the earth, [f](Y)earthy; the second man is from heaven. 48 As is the earthy, so also are those who are earthy; and as is the heavenly, (Z)so also are those who are heavenly. 49 And just as we have (AA)borne the image of the earthy, [g]we (AB)will also bear the image of the heavenly.

50 Now I say this, brothers, that (AC)flesh and blood cannot (AD)inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the corruptible inherit (AE)the incorruptible. 51 Behold, I tell you a (AF)mystery: we will not all sleep, but we will all be (AG)changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For (AH)the trumpet will sound, and (AI)the dead will be raised incorruptible, and (AJ)we will be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on (AK)the incorruptible, and this (AL)mortal must put on immortality. 54 But when this corruptible puts on the incorruptible, and this mortal puts on immortality, then will come about the word that is written, “(AM)Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 (AN)O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 Now the sting of (AO)death is sin, and (AP)the power of sin is the law; 57 but (AQ)thanks be to God, who gives us the (AR)victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

58 (AS)Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in (AT)the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

Psalm 39

Yahweh, Make Me Know My End

For the choir director. For [a]Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

39 I said, “I will (A)keep watch over my ways
That I (B)may not sin with my tongue;
I will keep watch over (C)my mouth as with a muzzle
While the wicked are in my presence.”
I was (D)mute with silence,
I even kept silent from speaking good,
And my anguish grew worse.
My (E)heart was hot within me,
While I meditated the fire was burning;
Then I spoke with my tongue:
“Yahweh, cause me to know (F)my end
And what is the extent of my days;
Let me know how (G)transient I am.
Behold, You have made (H)my days as [b]handbreadths,
And my (I)lifetime as nothing before You;
Surely every man, even standing firm, is [c]altogether (J)vanity. [d]Selah.
Surely every man (K)walks about as [e]a shadow;
Surely they make an (L)uproar in vain;
He (M)piles up riches and does not know who will gather them.

“And now, Lord, what do I hope in?
My (N)expectation is in You.
(O)Deliver me from all my transgressions;
Make me not the (P)reproach of the wicked fool.
I have become (Q)mute, I do not open my mouth,
Because it is (R)You who have done it.
10 (S)Remove Your plague from me;
Because of (T)the opposition of Your hand I am wasting away.
11 With (U)reproofs You chasten a man for iniquity;
You (V)consume as a moth what is precious to him;
Surely (W)every man is vanity. Selah.

12 (X)Hear my prayer, O Yahweh, and give ear to my cry for help;
Do not be silent (Y)at my tears;
For I am (Z)a sojourner with You,
A (AA)foreign resident like all my fathers.
13 (AB)Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may [f]smile again
Before I go and am no more.”

Proverbs 21:30-31

30 There is (A)no wisdom, there is no discernment
And there is no counsel against Yahweh.
31 The (B)horse is set for the day of battle,
But (C)salvation belongs to Yahweh.
