An Oracle Concerning Moab

15 The [a]oracle concerning (A)Moab.

Surely in a night (B)Ar of Moab is destroyed and ruined;
Surely in a night Kir of Moab is destroyed and ruined.
They have gone up to the [b]temple and to (C)Dibon, even to the high places to weep.
Moab wails over Nebo and Medeba;
Everyone’s head is (D)bald and every beard is cut off.
In their streets they have girded themselves with (E)sackcloth;
(F)On their rooftops and in their squares
Everyone is wailing, [c](G)dissolved in weeping.
(H)Heshbon and Elealeh also cry out,
Their voice is heard all the way to Jahaz;
Therefore [d]the armed men of Moab make a loud shout;
His soul trembles within him.
My heart cries out for Moab;
Those who flee from her are as far as (I)Zoar and Eglath-shelishiyah,
For they go up the (J)ascent of Luhith weeping;
Surely on the road to Horonaim they keep awake with crying in distress (K)over their destruction.
For the (L)waters of Nimrim are [e]desolate.
Surely the grass is dried up, the tender grass has [f]completely ceased,
There is (M)no green thing.
Therefore the (N)abundance they have made and stored up
They carry off over the brook of [g]Arabim.
For the cry has gone around the territory of Moab,
Its wailing goes as far as Eglaim and its wailing even to Beer-elim.
For the waters of Dimon are full of [h]blood;
Surely I will put added woes upon Dimon,
A (O)lion upon those of Moab who have escaped and upon the remnant of the land.

16 (P)Send the tribute lamb to the ruler of the land,
From [i](Q)Sela by way of the wilderness to the (R)mountain of the daughter of Zion.
Then, like [j](S)fleeing birds or scattered [k]nestlings,
The daughters of (T)Moab will be at the fords of the (U)Arnon.
“Bring us counsel, make a decision;
[l]Cast your (V)shadow like night [m]at high noon;
(W)Hide those banished, do not reveal the one who flees.
Let the [n]banished of Moab sojourn with you;
Be a hiding place to them from the destroyer.”
For the extortioner has come to an end, destruction has ceased,
(X)Oppressors have completely disappeared from the land.
And a (Y)throne will be established in lovingkindness,
And a judge will sit on it in truth in the tent of (Z)David;
Moreover, he will seek justice
And be prompt in righteousness.

(AA)We have heard of the pride of Moab, an excessive pride;
Even of his lofty pride, pride, and fury;
(AB)His idle boasts are [o]false.
Therefore Moab will wail; everyone of Moab will wail.
You will moan for the (AC)raisin cakes of (AD)Kir-hareseth
As those who are utterly stricken.
For the fields of (AE)Heshbon have languished, the vines of (AF)Sibmah as well;
The lords of the nations have trampled down its choice clusters
Which reached as far as Jazer and wandered to the deserts;
(AG)Its tendrils spread themselves out and passed over the sea.
Therefore I will (AH)weep bitterly for Jazer, for the vine of Sibmah;
I will drench you with my tears, O (AI)Heshbon and Elealeh;
For the shouting over your (AJ)summer fruits and your harvest has fallen away.
10 (AK)Gladness and joy are taken away from the fruitful orchard;
In the (AL)vineyards also there will be no cries of joy or shouts of jubilation,
No (AM)treader treads out wine in the presses,
For I have made the shouting to cease.
11 Therefore my [p](AN)inner being moans like a harp for Moab
And my [q]inward feelings for Kir-hareseth.
12 So it will be when Moab (AO)appears,
When he (AP)wearies himself upon his (AQ)high place
And comes to his sanctuary to pray,
That he will not prevail.

13 This is the word which Yahweh spoke earlier concerning Moab. 14 But now Yahweh speaks, saying, “Within three years, as [r](AR)a hired man would count them, the glory of (AS)Moab will be dishonored along with all his great population, and his remnant will be very small and not mighty.”

An Oracle Concerning Damascus

17 The [s](AT)oracle concerning (AU)Damascus.

“Behold, Damascus is about to be (AV)removed from being a city
And will become a (AW)fallen ruin.
The cities [t]of (AX)Aroer are forsaken;
They will be for (AY)flocks, and they will lie down in them;
And there will be (AZ)no one to cause them to tremble.
And the [u](BA)fortified city will cease from Ephraim,
And [v]sovereignty from Damascus
And the remnant of Aram;
They will be like the (BB)glory of the sons of Israel,”
Declares Yahweh of hosts.

Now it will be in that day, that the (BC)glory of Jacob will [w]wane,
And (BD)the fatness of his flesh will become lean.
And it will be (BE)even like the [x]reaper gathering the standing grain,
As his arm harvests the ears of grain,
Or it will be like one gleaning ears of grain
In the (BF)valley of Rephaim.
Yet (BG)gleanings will remain in it like the [y]shaking of an olive tree,
Two or three olives on the topmost branch,
Four or five on the twigs of a fruitful tree,
Declares Yahweh, the God of Israel.
In that day man will (BH)have regard for his Maker
And his eyes will look to the Holy One of Israel.
He will not have regard for the (BI)altars, the work of his hands,
Nor will he look to that which his (BJ)fingers have made,
Even the [z](BK)Asherim and [aa]incense stands.
In that day [ab]their strong cities will be like [ac]forsaken places in the forest,
Or like [ad]branches which they forsook before the sons of Israel;
And [ae]the land will be a desolation.
10 For (BL)you have forgotten the (BM)God of your salvation
And have not remembered the (BN)rock of your strong defense.
Therefore you plant delightful plants
And set them with vine branches of a strange god.
11 In the day that you plant it you carefully fence it in,
And in the (BO)morning you cause your seed to flourish;
But the harvest will (BP)be a heap
In a day of sickliness and incurable pain.

12 Alas, the uproar of many peoples
(BQ)Who roar like the roaring of the seas,
And the rumbling of nations
Who rumble on like the (BR)rumbling of mighty waters!
13 The (BS)nations rumble on like the rumbling of many waters,
But He will (BT)rebuke them, and they will flee far away,
And be pursued (BU)like chaff in the mountains before the wind,
Or like whirling dust before a whirlwind.
14 At evening time, behold, there is terror!
Before morning (BV)they are no more.
[af]Such will be the portion of those who pillage us
And the lot of those who plunder us.

A Message to Ethiopia

18 Alas, O land of whirring wings
Which lies beyond the rivers of [ag](BW)Ethiopia,
Which sends envoys by the sea,
Even in (BX)papyrus vessels on the surface of the waters.
Go, swift messengers, to a nation [ah](BY)tall and smooth,
To a people (BZ)feared [ai]far and wide,
A powerful and oppressive nation
Whose land the rivers divide.
(CA)All you inhabitants of the world and dwellers on earth,
As soon as a standard is raised on the mountains, (CB)you will see it,
And as soon as the trumpet is blown, you will hear it.

For thus Yahweh has told me,

“I will look [aj]from My (CC)dwelling place quietly
Like dazzling heat in the [ak](CD)sunshine,
Like a cloud of (CE)dew in the heat of harvest.”
For (CF)before the harvest, as soon as the bud [al]blossoms
And the flower becomes a ripening grape,
Then He will cut off the sprigs with pruning knives
And remove and cut away the spreading branches.
They will be left together for mountain birds (CG)of prey,
And for the beasts of the earth;
And the birds of prey will spend the summer feeding on them,
And all the beasts of the earth will spend harvest time on them.
At that time a gift of homage will be brought to Yahweh of hosts
[am]From a (CH)people [an]tall and smooth,
Even from a people feared [ao]far and wide,
A powerful and oppressive nation,
Whose land the rivers divide—
To the (CI)place of the name of Yahweh of hosts, even Mount Zion.

Galatians 1

Greetings and Grace

Paul, (A)an apostle—(B)not sent from men nor through man, but (C)through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who (D)raised Him from the dead— and all (E)the brothers who are with me,

To (F)the churches of Galatia:

(G)Grace to you and peace from [a]God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who (H)gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from (I)this present evil [b]age, according to the will of (J)our God and Father, (K)to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Distorting the Gospel

I marvel that you are so quickly deserting (L)Him who called you [c]by the grace of Christ for a (M)different gospel, which is really not another, only there are some who are (N)disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or (O)an angel from heaven, should proclaim to you a gospel [d]contrary to the gospel we have proclaimed to you, let him be [e](P)accursed! As we (Q)have said before, so I say again now, (R)if any man is proclaiming to you a gospel [f]contrary to what you received, let him be [g](S)accursed!

10 For am I now (T)seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a (U)slave of Christ.

Paul Called by God

11 For (V)I make known to you, brothers, that the gospel which I am proclaiming as good news is (W)not according to man. 12 For (X)I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a (Y)revelation of Jesus Christ.

13 For you have heard of (Z)my former conduct in Judaism, how I (AA)used to persecute (AB)the church of God beyond measure and (AC)tried to destroy it. 14 And I (AD)was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my countrymen, being far more zealous for the traditions of my (AE)fathers. 15 But when God, who had set me apart from my mother’s womb and (AF)called me through His grace, was pleased 16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might (AG)proclaim Him as good news among the Gentiles, (AH)I did not immediately consult with [h](AI)flesh and blood, 17 (AJ)nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away to Arabia, and returned once more to (AK)Damascus.

18 Then (AL)three years later I went up (AM)to Jerusalem to [i]become acquainted with (AN)Cephas, and stayed with him fifteen days. 19 But I did not see any other of the apostles except [j](AO)James, the Lord’s brother. 20 (Now in what I am writing to you, [k]I assure you (AP)before God that I am not lying!) 21 Then (AQ)I went into the regions of (AR)Syria and (AS)Cilicia. 22 And I was still unknown by [l]sight to (AT)the churches of Judea which are (AU)in Christ; 23 but only, they kept hearing, “He who once persecuted us is now proclaiming the good news of (AV)the faith which he once (AW)tried to destroy.” 24 And they (AX)were glorifying God [m]because of me.

Psalm 58

There Is a God Who Judges on Earth

For the choir director. [a]Al-tashheth. Of David. A [b]Mikhtam.

58 Do you indeed [c]speak righteousness, O [d]gods?
Do you (A)judge [e]with equity, O sons of men?
No, in heart you (B)work unrighteousness;
On earth you [f](C)prepare a path for the violence of your hands.
The wicked are estranged (D)from the womb;
These who speak falsehood (E)wander in error from [g]birth.
They have venom like the (F)venom of a serpent;
Like a deaf cobra that stops up its ear,
So that it (G)does not hear the voice of [h](H)charmers,
Or a skillful caster of spells.

O God, (I)shatter their teeth in their mouth;
Break out the fangs of the young lions, O Yahweh.
Let them (J)flow away like water that runs off;
When he [i](K)aims his arrows, let them be as [j]headless shafts.
Let them be as a snail which [k]melts away as it goes along,
Like the (L)miscarriages of a woman which never behold the sun.
Before your (M)pots can feel the fire of thorns
He will (N)sweep them away with a whirlwind, the living and the burning alike.

10 The (O)righteous will be glad when he (P)beholds the vengeance;
He will (Q)wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 And men will say, “Surely there is a [l](R)reward for the righteous;
Surely there is a God who (S)judges [m]on earth!”

Proverbs 23:12

12 Bring your heart to discipline
And your ears to [a]words of knowledge.
