An Oracle Concerning Egypt
19 The [a](A)oracle concerning (B)Egypt.
Behold, Yahweh is (C)riding on a swift cloud and is about to come to Egypt;
The (D)idols of Egypt will shake at His presence,
And the (E)heart of the Egyptians will melt within them.
2 “So I will incite Egyptians against Egyptians;
And they will (F)each fight against his brother and each against his neighbor,
City against city and kingdom against kingdom.
3 Then the spirit of the Egyptians will be emptied to destruction within them;
And I will confuse their counsel,
So that (G)they will seek idols and ghosts of the dead
And to [b]mediums and spiritists.
4 Moreover, I will deliver the Egyptians into the hand of a (H)cruel master,
And a [c]strong king will rule over them,” declares the Lord, Yahweh of hosts.
5 (I)The waters from the sea will dry up,
And the river will be parched and dry.
6 The (J)rivers will emit a stench,
The [d](K)streams of Egypt will thin out and dry up;
(L)The reeds and rushes will rot away.
7 The bulrushes by the (M)Nile, by the [e]edge of the Nile
And all the sown fields by the Nile
Will become dry, be driven away, and be no more.
8 And the (N)fishermen will lament,
And all those who cast a [f]line into the Nile will mourn,
And those who spread nets on the waters will [g]languish.
9 Moreover, the manufacturers of linen made from combed flax
And the weavers of white (O)cloth will be ashamed.
10 And [h]the (P)pillars of Egypt will be crushed;
All the hired laborers will be grieved in soul.
11 The princes of [i](Q)Zoan are merely ignorant fools;
The counsel of Pharaoh’s wisest counselors has become [j]senseless.
How can you men say to Pharaoh,
“I am a son of the (R)wise, a son of the kings of old”?
12 Well then, where are your wise men?
Please let them tell you,
And let them [k]understand what Yahweh of hosts
Has (S)counseled against Egypt.
13 The princes of [l]Zoan have acted as ignorant fools,
The princes of (T)Memphis are deluded;
Those who are the (U)cornerstone of her tribes
[m]Have led Egypt astray.
14 Yahweh has mixed within her a spirit of (V)distortion;
(W)They have led Egypt astray in all [n]that it does,
As a (X)drunken man [o]strays into his vomit.
15 There will be no work for Egypt
(Y)Which its head or tail, its palm branch or bulrush, may do.
Yahweh Will Bless Egypt, Assyria, and Israel
16 In that day the Egyptians will become like women, and they will tremble and be in (Z)dread because of the (AA)waving of the hand of Yahweh of hosts, which He is going to wave over them. 17 And the land of Judah will become a [p]terror to Egypt; everyone [q]to whom it is mentioned will be in dread of it because of the (AB)counsel of Yahweh of hosts which He is counseling against them.
18 In that day five cities in the land of Egypt will be speaking the language of Canaan and (AC)swearing allegiance to Yahweh of hosts; one will be called the City of [r]Destruction.
19 In that day there will be an (AD)altar to Yahweh in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a (AE)pillar to Yahweh near its border. 20 And it will become a sign and a witness to Yahweh of hosts in the land of Egypt; for they will cry to Yahweh because of oppressors, and He will send them a (AF)Savior and a [s](AG)Champion, and He will deliver them. 21 Thus Yahweh will make Himself known to Egypt, and the Egyptians will know Yahweh in that day. They will even worship with (AH)sacrifice and offering, and they will make a vow to Yahweh and pay it. 22 And Yahweh will smite Egypt, smiting but (AI)healing; so they will (AJ)return to Yahweh, and He will be moved by their entreaty and will heal them.
23 In that day there will be a (AK)highway from Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrians will come into Egypt and the Egyptians into Assyria, and the Egyptians will (AL)worship with the Assyrians.
24 In that day Israel will be the third party with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth, 25 whom Yahweh of hosts has blessed, saying, “Blessed is (AM)Egypt My people, and Assyria (AN)the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.”
A Prophecy About Egypt and Ethiopia
20 In the year that the [t](AO)commander came to (AP)Ashdod, when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him and he fought against Ashdod and captured it, 2 at that time Yahweh spoke by the hand of (AQ)Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, “Go and loosen the (AR)sackcloth from your hips and take your (AS)shoes off your feet.” And he did so, going (AT)naked and barefoot. 3 And Yahweh said, “Even as My servant Isaiah has gone naked and barefoot three years as a (AU)sign and wonder against Egypt and [u](AV)Ethiopia, 4 so the (AW)king of Assyria will lead away the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Ethiopia, (AX)young and old, naked and barefoot with buttocks uncovered, to the [v]shame of Egypt. 5 Then they will be (AY)dismayed and ashamed because of Ethiopia their hope and Egypt their (AZ)boast. 6 So the inhabitants of this coastland will say in that day, ‘Behold, such is our hope, where we fled (BA)for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria; and we, (BB)how shall we escape?’”
Fallen, Fallen Is Babylon
21 The [w](BC)oracle concerning the [x](BD)wilderness of the sea.
As (BE)whirlwinds in the [y]Negev sweep on,
It comes from the wilderness, from a fearsome land.
2 A (BF)harsh vision has been declared to me;
The (BG)treacherous one still deals treacherously, and the destroyer still destroys.
Go up, (BH)Elam, lay siege, Media;
I have made an end of all [z]the groaning she has caused.
3 For this reason my (BI)loins are full of anguish;
Pains have seized me like the pains of a (BJ)woman in labor.
I am so bewildered I cannot hear, so terrified I cannot see.
4 My heart [aa]reels; [ab]horror terrorizes me;
The twilight I longed for has been (BK)turned for me into trembling.
5 They (BL)set the table, they [ac]spread out the cloth, they eat, they drink;
“Rise up, commanders, oil the shields,”
6 For thus the Lord says to me,
“Go, station the lookout, let him (BM)declare what he sees.
7 Indeed, he shall see (BN)riders, horsemen in pairs,
Riders of donkeys, riders of camels,
So let him pay close attention, very close attention.”
8 Then [ad]the lookout called,
“(BO)O Lord, I stand continually by day on the watchtower,
And I am stationed every night at my guard post.
9 Now behold, here comes a troop of riders, horsemen in pairs.”
And one answered and said, “(BP)Fallen, fallen is Babylon;
And all the (BQ)graven images of her gods [ae]are shattered on the ground.”
10 O my (BR)trampled people and my [af]afflicted of the threshing floor!
What I have heard from Yahweh of hosts,
The God of Israel, I have declared to you.
Oracles Concerning Dumah and Arabia
11 The [ag]oracle concerning [ah](BS)Dumah.
One keeps calling to me from (BT)Seir,
“Watchman, [ai]how far gone is the night?
Watchman, [aj]how far gone is the night?”
12 The watchman says,
“Morning comes but also night.
If you would inquire, inquire;
Come back again.”
13 The [ak]oracle about [al](BU)Arabia.
In the thickets of [am]Arabia you [an]must spend the night,
O caravans of (BV)Dedanites.
14 Bring water to meet the thirsty,
O inhabitants of the land of (BW)Tema,
Meet with bread the one who has fled.
15 For they have (BX)fled from the swords,
From the drawn sword, and from the bent bow
And from the heaviness of battle.
16 For thus the Lord said to me, “In a (BY)year, as [ao]a hired man would count it, all the glory of (BZ)Kedar will end; 17 and the (CA)remainder of the number of bowmen, the mighty men of the sons of Kedar, will be few; for Yahweh, the God of Israel, (CB)has spoken.”
Paul Accepted by the Apostles
2 Then after fourteen years I (A)went up again to Jerusalem with (B)Barnabas, taking (C)Titus along also. 2 And I went up [a]because of a (D)revelation, and I laid out to them the (E)gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but I did so in private to those who were of reputation, lest somehow I might be (F)running, or had run, in vain. 3 But not even (G)Titus, who was with me, though he was a Greek, was (H)compelled to be circumcised. 4 But this was because of the (I)false brothers secretly brought in, who (J)had sneaked in to spy out our (K)freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to (L)enslave us. 5 But we did not yield in subjection to them for even [b]a moment, so that (M)the truth of the gospel would remain with you. 6 But from those who [c]were of high (N)reputation (what they were makes no difference to me; (O)God [d]shows no partiality)—well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me. 7 But on the contrary, seeing that I had been (P)entrusted with the (Q)gospel [e]to the uncircumcised, just as (R)Peter had been [f]to the circumcised 8 (for He who worked in Peter unto his (S)apostleship [g]to the circumcised worked in me also unto the Gentiles), 9 and recognizing (T)the grace that had been given to me, (U)James and (V)Cephas and [h]John, who were (W)reputed to be (X)pillars, gave to me and (Y)Barnabas the (Z)right [i]hand of fellowship, so that we might (AA)go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. 10 Only they asked us to remember the poor—(AB)the very thing I also was eager to do.
Paul Opposes Peter (Cephas)
11 But when (AC)Cephas came to (AD)Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he [j]stood condemned. 12 For prior to the coming of certain men from (AE)James, he used to (AF)eat with the Gentiles, but when they came, he began to shrink back and separate himself, (AG)fearing [k]the party of the circumcision. 13 And the rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even (AH)Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they (AI)were not [l]straightforward about (AJ)the truth of the gospel, I said to (AK)Cephas before everyone, “If you, being a Jew, (AL)live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?[m]
15 “We are (AM)Jews by nature and not (AN)sinners from among the Gentiles; 16 nevertheless [n]knowing that (AO)a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by (AP)faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since (AQ)by the works of [o]the Law no [p]flesh will be justified.
Deliver Me from My Enemies
For the choir director. [a]Al-tashheth. Of David. A [b]Mikhtam. [c]When Saul sent men and they watched the house in order to put him to death.
59 (A)Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
[d](B)Set me securely on high away from those who rise up against me.
2 Deliver me from (C)workers of iniquity
And save me from (D)men of bloodshed.
3 For behold, they (E)have lain in wait for my soul;
[e]Fierce men [f](F)launch an attack against me,
(G)Not for my transgression nor for my sin, O Yahweh,
4 [g](H)For no guilt of mine, they run and set themselves against me.
(I)Arouse Yourself to meet me, and see!
5 You, (J)O Yahweh God of hosts, the God of Israel,
Awake to [h](K)punish all the nations;
(L)Do not be gracious to any who are treacherous in [i]iniquity. [j]Selah.
6 They (M)return at evening, they howl like a (N)dog,
And go around the city.
7 Behold, they (O)pour forth speech with their mouth;
(P)Swords are in their lips,
For, they say, “(Q)Who hears?”
8 But You, O Yahweh, (R)laugh at them;
You (S)mock all the nations.
9 Because of [k]his (T)strength I will watch for You,
For God is my (U)stronghold.
10 [l]My God (V)in His lovingkindness will approach me;
God will let me (W)look triumphantly upon [m]my foes.
11 Do not slay them, (X)or my people will forget;
(Y)Make them wander about by Your power, and bring them down,
O Lord, (Z)our shield.
12 [n]On account of the (AA)sin of their mouth and the word of their lips,
Let them even be (AB)caught in their pride,
And on account of (AC)curses and [o]lies which they utter.
13 [p](AD)Destroy them in wrath, [q]destroy them that they may be no more;
That men may (AE)know that God [r]rules in Jacob
To the ends of the earth. Selah.
14 They (AF)return at evening, they howl like a dog,
And go around the city.
15 They (AG)wander about [s]for food
And [t]growl if they are not satisfied.
16 But as for me, I shall (AH)sing of Your strength;
And I shall (AI)joyfully sing of Your lovingkindness in the (AJ)morning,
For You have been my (AK)stronghold
And a (AL)refuge in the day of my distress.
17 (AM)O my strength, I will sing praises to You;
For God is my (AN)stronghold, the [u]God who shows me lovingkindness.
