12 Therefore this is what the Holy One of Israel says:
“(A)Since you have rejected this word
And have put your trust in (B)oppression and crookedness, and have relied on them,
13 Therefore this (C)wrongdoing will be to you
Like a (D)breach about to fall,
A bulge in a high wall,
Whose collapse comes (E)suddenly in an instant,
14 Whose collapse is like the smashing of a (F)potter’s jar,
[a]So ruthlessly shattered
That a shard will not be found among its pieces
To [b]take fire from a hearth
Or to scoop water from a cistern.”
15 For this is what the Lord [c]God, the Holy One of Israel, has said:
“In [d]repentance and (G)rest you will be saved,
In (H)quietness and trust is your strength.”
But you were not willing,
16 And you said, “No, for we will flee on (I)horses!”
Therefore you shall flee!
“And we will ride on swift horses!”
Therefore those who pursue you shall be swift.
17 (J)One thousand will flee at the threat of one man;
You will flee at the threat of five,
Until you are left like a signal post on a mountain top,
And like a flag on a hill.
God Is Gracious and Just
18 Therefore the Lord [e](K)longs to be gracious to you,
And therefore He [f]waits on (L)high to have compassion on you.
For the Lord is a (M)God of justice;
How blessed are all those who [g](N)long for Him.
19 [h]For, you people in Zion, (O)inhabitant in Jerusalem, you will (P)weep no longer. He will certainly be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when He hears it, He will (Q)answer you. 20 Although the Lord has given you (R)bread of deprivation and water of oppression, He, your Teacher, will no longer (S)hide Himself, but your eyes will see your Teacher. 21 Your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the (T)way, walk in it,” whenever you (U)turn to the right or to the left. 22 And you will desecrate your carved (V)images plated with silver, and your cast metal (W)images plated with gold. You will scatter them as a filthy thing, and say to [i]them, “(X)Be gone!”
23 Then He will (Y)give you rain for your seed which you will sow in the ground, and bread from the yield of the ground, and it will be [j]rich and [k]plentiful; on that day (Z)your livestock will graze in a wide pasture. 24 Also the oxen and the donkeys that work the ground will eat [l]seasoned feed, which [m]has been (AA)winnowed with shovel and pitchfork. 25 And on every lofty mountain and (AB)every high hill there will be [n]streams running with water on the day of the great (AC)slaughter, when the towers fall. 26 (AD)And the light of the full moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be seven times brighter, like the light of seven days, on the day (AE)the Lord binds up the (AF)fracture of His people and (AG)heals the wound [o]He has inflicted.
27 Behold, (AH)the name of the Lord comes from a [p]remote place;
(AI)His anger is burning and [q]dense with [r]smoke;
His lips are filled with (AJ)indignation,
And His tongue is like a (AK)consuming fire;
28 His (AL)breath is like an overflowing river,
Which (AM)reaches to the neck,
To (AN)shake the nations back and forth in a [s]sieve,
And to put in the jaws of the peoples (AO)the bridle which leads astray.
29 You will have [t]songs as in the night when you keep the festival,
And gladness of heart as when one marches to the sound of the flute,
To go to the mountain of the Lord, to the Rock of Israel.
30 And the Lord will cause [u]His voice of authority to be heard,
And the [v]descending of His arm to be seen in fierce anger,
And in the flame of a consuming fire
In cloudburst, downpour, and hailstones.
31 For (AP)at the voice of the Lord (AQ)Assyria will be terrified,
When He strikes with the (AR)rod.
32 And every [w]blow of the [x](AS)rod of punishment,
Which the Lord will lay on him,
Will be with the music of (AT)tambourines and lyres;
And in battles, (AU)brandishing weapons, He will fight them.
33 For [y](AV)Topheth has long been ready,
Indeed, it has been prepared for the king.
He has made it deep and large,
[z]A pyre of fire with plenty of wood;
The (AW)breath of the Lord, like a torrent of (AX)brimstone, sets it afire.
Help Not in Egypt but in God
31 Woe to those who go down to (AY)Egypt for help
And (AZ)rely on horses,
And trust in chariots because they are many
And in horsemen because they are very strong,
But they do not (BA)look to the (BB)Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord!
2 Yet He also is (BC)wise and will (BD)bring disaster,
And does (BE)not retract His words,
But will arise against the house of (BF)evildoers,
And against the help of the (BG)workers of injustice.
3 Now the Egyptians are (BH)human and not God,
And their (BI)horses are flesh and not spirit;
So the Lord will (BJ)stretch out His hand,
And any (BK)helper will stumble,
And one who is helped will fall.
And all of them will come to an end together.
4 For this is what the Lord says to me:
“As the (BL)lion or the young lion growls over his prey,
Against which a band of shepherds is called out,
And he will not be terrified at their voice nor disturbed at their noise,
So will the Lord of armies come down to wage (BM)war on Mount Zion and on its hill.”
5 Like [aa]flying (BN)birds so the Lord of armies will protect Jerusalem.
He will (BO)protect and save it;
He will pass over and rescue it.
6 (BP)Return to Him against whom [ab]you have been (BQ)profoundly obstinate, you sons of Israel. 7 For on that day every person will (BR)reject his silver idols and his gold idols, which your hands have made for you as (BS)a sin.
8 And the (BT)Assyrian will fall by a sword not wielded by a man,
And a (BU)sword not of man will devour him.
So he will [ac](BV)not escape the sword,
And his young men will become (BW)forced laborers.
9 “His (BX)rock will pass away because of panic,
And his officers will be terrified by the (BY)flag,”
Declares the Lord, whose (BZ)fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.
The Glorious Future
32 Behold, a (CA)king will reign righteously,
And officials will rule justly.
2 Each will be like a (CB)refuge from the wind
And a shelter from the storm,
Like [ad](CC)streams of water in a dry country,
Like the (CD)shade of a [ae]huge rock in an exhausted land.
3 Then (CE)the eyes of those who see will not be [af]blinded,
And the ears of those who hear will listen.
4 The [ag]mind of the (CF)rash will discern the [ah]truth,
And the tongue of the stammerers will hurry to speak clearly.
5 No longer will the (CG)fool be called noble,
Or the rogue be spoken of as generous.
6 For a fool speaks nonsense,
And his heart [ai](CH)inclines toward wickedness:
To practice (CI)ungodliness and to speak error against the Lord,
To [aj](CJ)keep the hungry person unsatisfied
And [ak]to withhold drink from the thirsty.
7 As for a rogue, his weapons are evil;
He (CK)devises wicked schemes
To (CL)destroy the poor with [al]slander,
(CM)Even though the needy one speaks [am]what is right.
8 But (CN)the noble person devises noble plans;
And by noble plans he stands.
9 Rise up, you (CO)women who are at ease,
And hear my voice;
(CP)Listen to my word,
You complacent daughters.
10 Within a year and a few days
You will be troubled, you complacent daughters;
(CQ)For the vintage is ended,
And the fruit gathering will not come.
11 Tremble, you women who are at ease;
(CR)Be troubled, you complacent daughters;
(CS)Strip, undress, and put sackcloth on your waist,
12 (CT)Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine,
13 (CU)For the land of my people in which thorns and briars will come up;
Indeed, for all the joyful houses and for the (CV)jubilant city.
14 For (CW)the palace has been neglected, the [an]populated (CX)city abandoned.
[ao]Hill and watch-tower have become (CY)caves forever,
A delight for (CZ)wild donkeys, a pasture for flocks,
15 Until the (DA)Spirit is poured out upon us from on high,
And the wilderness becomes a (DB)fertile field,
And the fertile field is considered as a forest.
16 Then (DC)justice will dwell in the wilderness,
And righteousness will remain in the fertile field.
17 And the (DD)work of righteousness will be peace,
And the service of righteousness, (DE)quietness and [ap]confidence forever.
18 Then my people will live in a (DF)peaceful settlement,
In secure dwellings, and in undisturbed (DG)resting places;
19 And it will (DH)hail when the (DI)forest comes down,
And (DJ)the city will be utterly laid low.
20 How (DK)blessed will you be, you who sow beside all waters,
Who [aq]let the ox and the donkey out freely.
The Judgment of God
33 Woe (DL)to you, destroyer,
While you were not destroyed;
And he (DM)who is treacherous, while others did not deal treacherously with him.
As soon as you finish destroying, (DN)you will be destroyed;
As soon as you cease to deal treacherously, others will (DO)deal treacherously with you.
2 Lord, (DP)be gracious to us; we have (DQ)waited for You.
Be [ar]their [as](DR)strength every morning,
Our salvation also in the (DS)time of distress.
3 At the sound of a roar, (DT)peoples flee;
At the (DU)lifting up of Yourself, nations disperse.
4 Your plunder is gathered as the caterpillar gathers;
Like an infestation of locusts, people storm it.
5 The Lord is (DV)exalted, for He dwells on high;
He has (DW)filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
6 And He will be the [at](DX)stability of your times,
A (DY)wealth of salvation, wisdom, and (DZ)knowledge;
The (EA)fear of the Lord is his treasure.
7 Behold, their brave men cry out [au]in the streets,
The [av](EB)ambassadors of peace weep bitterly.
8 The highways are desolate, [aw]the (EC)traveler has ceased,
He has (ED)broken the covenant, he has despised the cities,
He has no regard for mankind.
9 (EE)The land mourns and wastes away,
(EF)Lebanon is shamed and withers;
(EG)Sharon is like a desert plain,
And Bashan and Carmel [ax]lose their foliage.
Follow the Spirit
5 (A)It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore (B)keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a (C)yoke of slavery.
2 Look! I, (D)Paul, tell you that if you have yourselves (E)circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3 And I (F)testify again to every man who has himself (G)circumcised, that he is obligated to (H)keep the whole Law. 4 You have been severed from Christ, you who [a]are seeking to be justified by the [b]Law; you have (I)fallen from grace. 5 For we, [c]through the Spirit, [d]by faith, are (J)waiting for the hope of righteousness. 6 For in (K)Christ Jesus (L)neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but (M)faith working through love.
7 You were (N)running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8 This persuasion did not come from (O)Him who calls you. 9 (P)A little [e]leaven leavens the whole lump of dough. 10 (Q)I have confidence [f]in you in the Lord, that you (R)will adopt no other view; but the one who is (S)disturbing you will bear the punishment, whoever he is. 11 But as for me, brothers and sisters, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still (T)persecuted? Then (U)the stumbling block of the cross has been eliminated. 12 I wish that (V)those who are troubling you would even [g](W)emasculate themselves.
The Thirsting Soul Satisfied in God.
A Psalm of David, [a]when he was in the wilderness of Judah.
63 God, (A)You are my God; I shall be watching for You;
My soul (B)thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You,
In a (C)dry and exhausted land where there is no water.
2 So have I (D)seen You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and glory.
3 Because Your [b](E)favor is better than life,
My lips will praise You.
4 So I will bless You (F)as long as I live;
I will (G)lift up my hands in Your name.
5 My soul is (H)satisfied as with fat and fatness,
And my mouth offers (I)praises with joyful lips.
6 When I remember You (J)on my bed,
I meditate on You in the (K)night watches,
7 For (L)You have been my help,
And in the (M)shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.
8 My soul (N)clings [c]to You;
Your (O)right hand takes hold of me.
9 But those who (P)seek my [d]life to destroy it,
Will go into the [e](Q)depths of the earth.
10 [f]They will be [g](R)turned over to the power of the sword;
They will be a [h](S)prey for foxes.
11 But the (T)king will rejoice in God;
Everyone who (U)swears by Him will boast,
For the (V)mouths of those who speak lies will be stopped.
