8 “(A)How can you say, ‘We are wise,
And the law of Yahweh is with us’?
But behold, the lying pen of the scribes
Has made it into a lie.
9 The wise men are (B)put to shame;
They are dismayed and captured;
Behold, they have (C)rejected the word of Yahweh,
And what kind of wisdom do they have?
10 Therefore I will (D)give their wives to others,
Their fields to [a]new possessors,
Because from the least even to the greatest
Everyone is (E)greedy for gain;
From the prophet even to the priest
Everyone practices lying.
11 They (F)heal the brokenness of the daughter of My people superficially,
Saying, ‘Peace, peace,’
But there is no peace.
12 Were they (G)ashamed because of the abomination they had done?
They certainly were not ashamed,
And they did not know how to feel dishonor;
Therefore they shall (H)fall among those who fall;
At the (I)time of their [b]punishment they shall be brought down,”
Says Yahweh.
13 “I will (J)surely gather them up,” declares Yahweh;
“There will be (K)no grapes on the vine
And (L)no figs on the fig tree,
And the leaf will wither;
And what I have given them will pass away.”’”
14 Why are we sitting still?
(M)Gather yourselves, and let us (N)go into the fortified cities
And let us be silent there
Because Yahweh our God has silenced us
And given us [c](O)poisoned water to drink,
For (P)we have sinned against Yahweh.
15 We (Q)waited for peace, but there was no good;
For a time of healing, but behold, terror!
16 From (R)Dan is heard the snorting of his horses;
At the sound of the neighing of his (S)valiant steeds
The whole land quakes;
And they come and (T)devour the land as well as its fullness,
The city and its inhabitants.
17 “For behold, I am (U)sending serpents against you,
Vipers, for which there is (V)no charm,
And they will bite you,” declares Yahweh.
Sorrow over Zion
18 [d]My (W)sorrow is beyond healing;
My (X)heart is faint within me!
19 Behold, the sound! The cry of the daughter of my people from a (Y)distant land:
“Is Yahweh not in Zion? Is her King not within her?”
“Why have they (Z)provoked Me to anger with their graven images, with foreign [e](AA)idols?”
20 “Harvest is past, summer is ended,
And we are not saved.”
21 For the (AB)brokenness of the daughter of my people I am broken;
I (AC)mourn, desolation has taken hold of me.
22 Is there no (AD)balm in Gilead?
Is there no physician there?
(AE)Why then has not the [f]health of the daughter of my people gone up?
9 [g](AF)Oh that my head were waters
And my eyes a fountain of tears,
That I might weep day and night
For the slain of the (AG)daughter of my people!
2 [h](AH)Oh that I had in the desert
A travelers’ lodging place,
That I might leave my people
And go from them!
For all of them are (AI)adulterers,
A solemn assembly of (AJ)treacherous men.
3 “They (AK)bend their tongue like their bow;
Lies and unfaithfulness prevail in the land,
For they (AL)go onward from evil to evil,
And they (AM)do not know Me,” declares Yahweh.
4 “Let everyone (AN)beware of his neighbor,
And (AO)do not trust any brother,
Because every (AP)brother [i]surely supplants,
And every neighbor (AQ)goes about as a slanderer.
5 Everyone (AR)deceives his neighbor
And does not speak the truth;
They have taught their tongue to speak lies;
They (AS)weary themselves committing iniquity.
6 Your (AT)habitation is in the midst of deceit;
Through deceit they (AU)refuse to know Me,” declares Yahweh.
7 Therefore thus says Yahweh of hosts,
“Behold, I will refine them and (AV)test them;
For (AW)what else can I do, because of the daughter of My people?
8 Their (AX)tongue is a slaughtering arrow;
It speaks deceit;
With his mouth one (AY)speaks peace to his neighbor,
But inwardly he (AZ)sets an ambush for him.
9 (BA)Shall I not punish them for these things?” declares Yahweh.
“On a nation such as this
Shall I not avenge Myself?
10 “For the (BB)mountains I will take up a weeping and wailing,
And for the pastures of the (BC)wilderness a funeral lamentation,
Because they are (BD)turned into ruin so that no one passes through,
And the lowing of the cattle is not heard;
Both the (BE)birds of the sky and the beasts have fled; they are gone.
11 I will make Jerusalem a (BF)heap of ruins,
A haunt of (BG)jackals;
And I will make the cities of Judah a (BH)desolation, without inhabitant.”
12 Who is the (BI)wise man that may understand this? And who is he to whom (BJ)the mouth of Yahweh has spoken, that he may declare it? (BK)Why has the land perished, turned into ruin like a desert, so that no one passes through? 13 Yahweh said, “Because they have (BL)forsaken My law, which I set before them, and have not listened to My voice nor walked according to it, 14 but have (BM)walked after the stubbornness of their heart and after the (BN)Baals, as their (BO)fathers taught them,” 15 therefore thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, “behold, (BP)I will feed them, this people, with wormwood and give them [j](BQ)poisoned water to drink. 16 I will (BR)scatter them among the nations, whom neither they nor their fathers have known; and I will send the (BS)sword after them until I have consumed them.”
17 Thus says Yahweh of hosts,
“Carefully consider and call for the (BT)mourning women, that they may come;
And send for the [k](BU)skillful women, that they may come!
18 Let them make haste and take up a wailing for us,
That our (BV)eyes may shed tears
And our eyelids flow with water.
19 For a voice of (BW)wailing is heard from Zion,
‘(BX)How we are destroyed!
We are put to great shame,
For we have (BY)left the land
Because they have cast down our dwellings.’”
20 Indeed, hear the word of Yahweh, O you (BZ)women,
And let your ear receive the word of His mouth;
Teach your daughters wailing,
And everyone her neighbor a funeral lamentation.
21 For (CA)death has come up through our windows;
It has entered our palaces
To cut off the (CB)infants from the streets,
The choice men from the open squares.
22 Speak, “Thus declares Yahweh,
‘The corpses of men will fall (CC)like dung on the open field
And like the sheaf after the reaper,
But no one will gather them.’”
23 Thus says Yahweh, “(CD)Let not a wise man boast in his wisdom, and let not the (CE)mighty man boast in his might; let not a (CF)rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let him who boasts (CG)boast in this, that he [l]understands and knows Me, that I am Yahweh who (CH)shows lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on earth; for I (CI)delight in these things,” declares Yahweh.
25 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “that I will punish all who are circumcised and yet (CJ)uncircumcised— 26 Egypt and Judah, and Edom and the sons of Ammon, and Moab and (CK)all those inhabiting the desert who clip the hair on their temples; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are (CL)uncircumcised of heart.”
Put On the New Man
3 Therefore, if you have been (A)raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, (B)seated at the right hand of God. 2 [a](C)Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. 3 For you (D)died and your life has been hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, (E)who is our life, is manifested, (F)then you also will be manifested with Him in glory.
5 (G)Therefore, [b]consider (H)the members of your earthly body as dead to (I)sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these things, (J)the wrath of God is coming [c]upon the sons of disobedience, 7 and (K)in them you also once walked, when you were living [d]in them. 8 But now you also, (L)lay them all aside: (M)wrath, anger, malice, slander, and (N)abusive speech from your mouth. 9 [e](O)Do not lie to one another, since you (P)put off the old man with its evil practices, 10 and have (Q)put on the new man who is being [f](R)renewed to a full knowledge (S)according to the image of the One who (T)created him— 11 a renewal in which (U)there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, (V)circumcised and uncircumcised, [g](W)barbarian, Scythian, (X)slave, and freeman, but (Y)Christ is all and in all.
12 So, as the (Z)elect of God, holy and beloved, (AA)put on a (AB)heart of compassion, kindness, (AC)humility, gentleness, and [h](AD)patience; 13 (AE)bearing with one another, and (AF)graciously forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone, (AG)just as the Lord graciously forgave you, so also should you. 14 Above all these things put on love, which is [i](AH)the perfect bond of (AI)unity. 15 And let (AJ)the peace of Christ [j]rule in your hearts, to which [k]indeed you were called in (AK)one body, and [l]be thankful. 16 Let (AL)the word of [m]Christ dwell in you richly, [n]with all wisdom (AM)teaching and admonishing [o]one another (AN)with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, (AO)singing [p]with gratefulness in your hearts to God. 17 (AP)And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, (AQ)giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
32 In spite of all this they (A)still sinned
And (B)did not believe in His wondrous deeds.
33 So He brought (C)their days to an end in [a]futility
And their years in sudden terror.
34 When He killed them, then they (D)sought Him,
And returned and sought (E)earnestly for God;
35 And they remembered that God was their (F)rock,
And the Most High God their (G)Redeemer.
36 But they (H)deceived Him with their mouth
And (I)lied to Him with their tongue.
37 For their heart was not (J)prepared to remain with Him,
Nor were they faithful in His covenant.
38 But He, being (K)compassionate, (L)atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them;
And He abounded in (M)turning back His anger
And did not arouse all His wrath.
39 Thus (N)He remembered that they were but (O)flesh,
A [b](P)wind that goes and does not return.
40 How often they (Q)rebelled against Him in the wilderness
And (R)grieved Him in the (S)wasteland!
41 Again and again they [c](T)tested God,
And pained the (U)Holy One of Israel.
42 They (V)did not remember (W)His [d]power,
The day when He (X)redeemed them from the adversary,
43 When He performed His (Y)signs in Egypt
And His (Z)miracles in the field of Zoan,
44 And (AA)turned their rivers to blood,
And their streams, they could not drink.
45 He sent among them swarms of (AB)flies which devoured them,
And (AC)frogs which destroyed them.
46 He gave also their crops to the (AD)grasshopper
And the fruit of their labor to the (AE)locust.
47 He killed their vines with (AF)hailstones
And their sycamore trees with frost.
48 He gave over their (AG)cattle also to the hailstones
And their herds to bolts of lightning.
49 He (AH)sent upon them His burning anger,
Fury and indignation and [e]distress,
[f]A band of destroying angels.
50 He leveled a path for His anger;
He did not hold back their soul from death,
But (AI)gave over their life to the plague,
51 So He (AJ)struck all the firstborn in Egypt,
The (AK)first of their vigor in the tents of (AL)Ham.
52 But He (AM)led forth His own people like sheep
And guided them in the wilderness (AN)like a flock;
53 He led them (AO)safely, so that they did not fear;
But (AP)the sea covered their enemies.
27 Establish your work outside
And (A)make it ready for yourself in the field;
And afterwards, you shall build your house.
