Jeremiah 12:1-14:10

Jeremiah’s First Complaint

12 Lord, when I bring ·my case to [charges against] you,
    you are ·always right [righteous].
But I want to ·ask you about the justice you give [put my case to you].
Why ·are evil people [L is the way/path of the wicked] successful?
Why do ·dishonest [treasonous; treacherous] people ·have such easy lives [thrive; Job; Ps. 73; Eccl. 7:15–18; 8:10–12]?
You ·have put the evil people here
like plants with strong roots [L plant them; they take root].
They grow and produce fruit [17:7–8].
·With their mouths they speak well of you [L You are near in their mouths],
but ·their hearts are really far away from you [L far from their hearts/thoughts].
But you know ·my heart [L me], Lord.
You see me and test my ·thoughts [L heart] about you [1:5; Ps. 139].
Drag the evil people away like sheep to be ·butchered [slaughtered].
·Set them aside [C Consecrate them] for the day of killing.
How much longer will the land ·stay dried up [L mourn]
and the grass in every field be ·dead [dry]?
The animals and birds in the land ·have died [L are swept away],
    because the people are evil.
Yes, they are even saying,
“God does not see what happens to us.”

The Lord’s Answer to Jeremiah

“If you ·get tired while racing against people [L raced with foot-runners and got tired],
how can you ·race against [compete with] horses?
·If you stumble in a country that is safe, [or You feel confident in a country that is safe, but…]
what will you do in the thick thornbushes along the Jordan River?
Even your own brothers and ·members of your own family [L the house of your father]
are ·making plans against [betraying] you.
They are crying out against you.
Don’t trust them,
even when they say nice things to you!

“I have ·left [abandoned; forsaken] ·Israel [L my house; Ezek. 8:1—11:25];
    I have ·left [cast off] my ·people [L inheritance].
I have given the people I love [C Judah]
·over to [L into the palm of] their enemies.
My ·people [L inheritance] have become to me
like a lion in the forest.
They ·roar [L give forth their voice] at me,
    so I hate them.
My people have become to me
like a ·speckled bird [or hyena’s lair] attacked on all sides by ·hawks [birds of prey].
Go, gather the ·wild animals [L beasts of the field].
Bring them to get something to eat.
10 Many shepherds [C the leaders of Judah] have ruined my vineyards
and trampled ·the plants in my field [L my portion].
They have turned my ·beautiful [precious; coveted; treasured] ·field [L portion]
    into an empty ·desert [wilderness].
11 They have turned ·my field [L it] into ·a desert [desolation]
that is ·wilted [desolate] and ·dead [L mourns].
The whole country is ·an empty desert [desolate],
because no one ·who lives there cares [L sets it on heart].
12 ·Many soldiers [L Destroyers] have marched over those barren hills.
·The Lord is using the armies to punish that land [L The sword of the Lord devours]
from one end to the other.
·No one is safe [L There is no peace for all flesh].
13 The people have planted wheat,
but they have harvested only thorns.
They have worked hard until they were very tired,
but they have nothing for all their work.
They are ashamed of their poor harvest,
because the Lord’s terrible anger has caused this.”

14 This is what the Lord said to me: “Here is what I will do to all my wicked neighbors [C like Edom; Ps. 137:7; Obad. 10–14] who ·take [L touch] the ·land [L inheritance] I ·gave my people Israel [L made my people Israel inherit]. I will ·pull them up and throw them out of [L uproot them from] their land. And I will ·pull up [uproot] the ·people [L house] of Judah from among them. 15 But after I ·pull them up [uproot them; 1:10], I will ·feel sorry for [have compassion on] them again. I will ·bring [restore] each person back to his own ·property [inheritance] and to his own land. 16 I want them to learn their lessons well. In the past they taught my people to swear by Baal’s name. But if they will now learn to swear by my name, saying, ‘As surely as the Lord lives…’ I will ·allow them to rebuild [build them up] among my people. 17 But if a nation will not listen to my message, I will ·pull it up [uproot] completely and destroy it,” says the Lord.

Jeremiah’s Linen Belt

13 This is what the Lord said to me: “Go and buy a linen ·belt [loincloth; underwear; C priests like Jeremiah wore linen undergarments; Ex. 28:39; 39:27–29; Ezek. 44:17–18] and put it around your ·waist [loins]. Don’t let the ·belt [loincloth; underwear] ·get wet [be washed; be brought into water].”

So I bought a ·linen belt [loincloth; underwear], just as the Lord told me, and put it around my ·waist [loins]. Then the Lord spoke his word to me a second time: “Take the ·belt [loincloth; underwear] you bought and ·are wearing [L is on your loins], and go to Perath [C the name of the Euphrates River or a town near Jerusalem with a similar name (Josh. 18:23)]. Hide the ·belt [loincloth; underwear] there in a crack in the rocks.” So I went to Perath and hid the ·belt [loincloth; underwear] there, just as the Lord ·told [commanded] me.

·Many days later [L At the end of many days] the Lord said to me, “Now go to Perath [v. 4] and get the ·belt [loincloth; underwear] I ·told [commanded] you to hide there.” So I went to Perath and dug up the ·belt [loincloth; underwear] and took it from where I had hidden it. But now it was ruined; it was good for nothing.

Then the Lord spoke his word to me. This is what the Lord said: “In the same way I will ·ruin [destroy; rot away] the pride of the people of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem. 10 These evil people refuse to listen to my ·warnings [L words]. They ·stubbornly do only what they want to do [L follow/go after their stubborn hearts], and they ·follow [L go after] other gods to serve and ·worship [bow down to] them. So they will become like this ·linen belt [loincloth; underwear]—good for nothing. 11 As a ·belt [loincloth; underwear] ·is wrapped tightly around [clings to] a person’s ·waist [loins], I ·wrapped the families of Israel and Judah around [L caused all the house of Israel and all the house of Judah to cling to] me,” says the Lord. “I did that so they would be my people and bring fame, praise, and ·honor [splendor] to me. But my people would not listen.

Warnings About Leather Wine Bags

12 “Say to them: ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: All ·leather bags for holding wine [wineskins] should be filled with wine.’ People will say to you: ‘·Of course, we know [L Do we not know that…?] all wine bags should be filled with wine.’ 13 Then you will say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: I will ·make everyone in this land like a drunken person [L fill with drunkenness all who live in this land; C they will drink from the “cup of God’s wrath” (25:15–18)]—the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests and the prophets, and all the people who live in Jerusalem. 14 I will make them smash against one another, fathers and sons alike, says the Lord. I will not feel sorry or have pity on them or show ·mercy [compassion] that would stop me from destroying them.’”

Threat of Slavery

15 Listen and ·pay attention [L give ear].
Don’t ·be too proud [exalt yourself],
because the Lord has spoken to you.
16 Give glory to the Lord your God
    before he brings darkness
and before ·you slip and fall [L your feet stumble]
    on the dark hills.
You hope for light,
    but he will turn it into thick darkness;
he will change it into deep gloom [Amos 5:18–20].
17 If you don’t listen to him,
    I will cry secretly
    because of your pride.
I will cry painfully,
and my eyes will ·overflow [run down] with tears,
because the ·Lord’s people [L the flock of the Lord] will be ·captured [exiled].

18 Tell this to the king and the queen mother [L perhaps Jehoiachin and his mother Nehushta who went into exile in 597 bc (22:26; 29:2; 2 Kin. 24:8–17)]
    “Come down from your thrones,
because your ·beautiful [splendid; glorious] crowns
·have fallen [or will fall] from your heads.”
19 The cities of ·southern Judah [L the Negev] are ·locked [shut] up,
and no one can open them.
All Judah will be ·taken as captives to a foreign land [exiled; C to Babylon];
they will ·be carried away [exiled] completely [C the exile in 597 bc was a precursor to the more complete one in 586 bc].

20 Look up and see [C addressed to queen mother]
the people coming from the north [C the Babylonian army].
Where is the flock ·God gave you to care for [L given to you],
·the flock you bragged about [L your splendid flock; C the people of Judah]?
21 What will you say when ·they [or God] appoint as your ·heads [rulers]
those you had thought were your ·friends [allies]?
Won’t ·you have much pain and trouble [L pain seize you],
    like a woman giving birth to a baby [4:31; 6:24; 22:23; 30:6; 48:41; 49:22, 24; 50:43]?
22 You might ·ask yourself [L say in your heart],
“Why has this happened to me?”
It happened because of your many ·sins [iniquities].
Because of your ·sins [iniquities], your skirt was torn off
and your ·body [L heel; C euphemism for genitals] has been ·treated badly [violated].
23 Can a person from ·Cush [Ethiopia] change ·his skin [L its color]?
Can a leopard change his spots?
In the same way, you [C Jerusalem] cannot change and do good,
because you are accustomed to doing evil.

24 “I will scatter you like chaff that is ·blown away [driven] by the ·desert [wilderness] wind.
25 This is ·what will happen to you [L your lot];
·this is your part in my plans [L the portion decreed for you],” says the Lord.
“Because you forgot me
and ·trusted [had confidence] in ·false gods [falsehood; lies],
26 I will pull your skirts up over your face
so everyone will see your ·shame [humiliation; Nah. 3:6].
27 I have seen the terrible things you have done:
your acts of adultery and your ·snorting [neighing; C like a horse in heat],
    your prostitution,
your ·hateful [abominable; detestable] acts
on the hills and in the fields [C where they had shrines to false gods].
·How terrible it will be for [Woe to] you, Jerusalem.
How long will you continue being unclean?”

A Time Without Rain

14 These are the words that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah ·about the time when there was no rain [concerning the drought; C often a punishment from God; Lev. 26:18–20; Deut. 28:22–24; 1 Kin. 17:1]:

“The nation of Judah ·cries as if someone has died [mourns],
and her ·cities [L gates] ·are very sad [languish].
They ·are distressed [wail] over the land.
A cry goes up [C to God] from Jerusalem.
The ·important men [nobles] send their ·servants [L young/little ones] to get water.
They go to the ·wells [cisterns],
    but they find no water.
So they return with empty jars.
They are ·ashamed [humiliated] and embarrassed
and ·cover [veil] their heads [C in shame].
The ground is cracked open,
because no rain falls on the land.
The farmers are ·upset and sad [L ashamed],
so they ·cover [veil] their heads.
Even the mother deer in the field
·leaves her newborn fawn to die [L gives birth and leaves],
because there is no ·grass [vegetation].
Wild donkeys stand on the bare hills
and ·sniff the wind [pant] like ·wild dogs [jackals].
But their eyes go blind,
because there is no ·food [pasture].”

We know that we suffer because of our sins.
Lord, ·do something to help us for the good of your name [L act on behalf of your name/reputation].
·We have left you many times [L Many are our apostasies/infidelities];
    we have sinned against you.
The Hope of Israel [C God],
you have ·saved [rescued] it [C Israel] in times of ·trouble [distress].
Why are you like a ·stranger [alien resident] in the land,
or like a traveler who only stays one night?
Why are you like someone who has been attacked by surprise,
like a warrior who is not able to ·save anyone [be victorious]?
But you are among us, Lord,
and we are called by your name
so don’t ·leave us without help [forsake us]!

10 This is what the Lord says about this people [C of Judah]:

“They really love to wander from me;
they don’t ·stop themselves from leaving me [L restrain their feet].
So now the Lord will not ·accept [be pleased with] them.
He will now remember ·the evil they do [their iniquity]
and will punish them for their sins.”

1 Thessalonians 1:1-2:8

From Paul, Silas [Acts 15:22, 40], and Timothy [Acts 16:1–5; 1 Cor. 16:10–11; Phil. 2:19–24; 1 and 2 Timothy].

To the church in Thessalonica [L of the Thessalonians; C a city in Macedonia, present-day northern Greece], the church in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace and peace to you.

The Faith of the Thessalonians

We always thank God for all of you and mention you when we pray. We continually recall before God our Father ·the things you have done because of your faith [L your work of/from faith], ·the work you have done because of your love [L your labor of/from love] and your ·continuing strength because of your hope [L endurance of/from hope] in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Brothers and sisters, God loves you, and we know he has chosen you, because the ·Good News [Gospel] we brought to you came not only with words, but with power, with the Holy Spirit, and with ·sure knowledge that it is true [great conviction]. You know how we lived when we were with you ·in order to help you [for your sake]. And you became ·like us and like [imitators of us and of] the Lord. You ·suffered much [experienced many trials/much persecution], but still you accepted the teaching with the joy that comes from the Holy Spirit. So you became an ·example to [model for] all the believers in Macedonia [C the Roman province in which Thessalonica was located, present-day northern Greece] and Achaia [C present-day southern Greece]. And the Lord’s ·teaching [message; word] ·spread [rang out; sounded forth] from you not only into Macedonia and Achaia, but now your faith in God has ·become known [gone forth] everywhere. So we do not need to say anything about it. ·People everywhere [L For they themselves] are ·telling [reporting; announcing] about the way you ·accepted [welcomed] us when we were there with you. They tell how you ·stopped worshiping idols [L turned to God from idols] to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom God raised from the dead. He is Jesus, who ·saves [rescues; delivers] us from ·God’s angry judgment that is sure to come [L the coming wrath].

Paul’s Work in Thessalonica

Brothers and sisters, you ·know [yourselves know; are well aware that] our ·visit [coming] to you was not ·a failure [without results; in vain; Acts 17:1–9]. Before we came to you, we suffered and were ·insulted [mistreated] in Philippi [C a city in Macedonia (1:7); Acts 16:6–40], as you know. But ·our God helped us to be brave and [L we were emboldened in our God] to tell you ·his Good News [the Gospel of God] in spite of great opposition. [L For] Our ·appeal [encouragement; exhortation] does not come from ·lies [error] or ·wrong reasons [false motives; L impurity], nor ·were we trying to trick you [with guile/deceit]. But we speak the ·Good News [Gospel] because God ·tested [approved] us and ·trusted us to do [or entrusted us with] it. When we speak, we are not trying to please people, but God, who ·tests [examines; approves] our hearts. You know that we never ·tried to influence you by saying nice things about you [L came with words of flattery]. ·We were not trying to get your money; we had no selfishness to hide from you [L …nor with hidden motives of greed]. God ·knows that this is true [L is (our) witness]. We were not looking for human ·praise [glory], from you or anyone else, even though as apostles of Christ we could have ·used our authority over you [thrown our weight around; exercised our prerogatives].

But we were very gentle with you,[a] like a ·mother [nurse; nursing mother] caring for her [L own] little children. Because we ·loved [had such affection for/devotion to] you, we were ·happy [pleased; delighted] to share not only God’s ·Good News [Gospel] with you, but ·even [also] our own lives. You had become so ·dear [beloved] to us!

Psalm 79

The Nation Cries for Jerusalem

A psalm of Asaph [C a Levitical musician, a descendant of Gershon, at the time of David; 1 Chr. 6:39; 15:17; 2 Chr. 5:12].

79 God, nations have come against your ·chosen people [L inheritance].
They have ·ruined [profaned] your holy Temple.
They have turned Jerusalem into ·ruins [a dump; 2 Kin. 25:9–10].
They have given the bodies of your servants as food to the ·wild birds [L birds of the sky/heavens].
They have given the ·bodies [L flesh] of ·those who worship you [your faithful ones; saints] to the wild animals [Jer. 34:20].
They have spilled blood like water all around Jerusalem.
No one was left to bury the dead.
We are a ·joke [reproach; scorn] to the ·other nations [L residents];
·they [L the people around us] ·laugh [ridicule] and make fun of us.

Lord, how long?
    Will you be angry forever?
How long will your jealousy burn like a fire?
·Be angry with [L Pour out your wrath on] the nations that do not know you
and ·with [or on] the kingdoms that do not ·honor you [L call on your name].
They have ·gobbled up [devoured] the people of Jacob
and ·destroyed [desolated] their ·land [pasturage].
Don’t ·punish us for our past sins [L remember our former guilt].
Show your ·mercy [compassion] to us soon,
because we are ·helpless [very low]!
God our ·Savior [Victor], help us
·so people will praise you [L for the glory of your name].
·Save [Protect] us and ·forgive [atone for] our sins
·so people will honor you [L for your name].
10 Why should the nations say,
    “Where is their God?”
·Tell [Inform] the other nations ·in our presence [L before our eyes]
that you ·punish [avenge] ·those who kill your servants [L the blood of your servants that has been poured out].
11 ·Hear the moans of the prisoners [Let the groans of the prisoner come before you].
Use your great ·power [L arm]
to save those ·sentenced [doomed] to die.

12 Repay ·those around [L into the bosom of those around] us seven times over
for their ·insults to [reproach/scorn of] you, Lord.
13 We are your people, the sheep of your ·flock [pasture].
    We will ·thank [praise] you always;
·forever and ever [from generation to generation] we ·will praise you [L recount your praise].

Proverbs 24:30-34

30 I ·passed by [happened upon] a lazy person’s field
and by the vineyard of someone ·with no sense [L who lacks heart/sense].
31 Thorns had grown up everywhere.
The ground was covered with weeds,
and the stone walls had fallen down.
32 I ·thought about [took to heart] what I had seen;
I learned this lesson from what I saw.
33 ·You sleep a little; you take a nap [“A little sleep, a little slumber”].
·You fold your hands and [L “A little folding of the arms to…”] lie down to rest [6:10].
34 So ·you will be as poor as if you had been robbed [L poverty will come on you like a robber];
·you will have as little as if you had been held up [L deprivation (will come on you) like a shielded warrior].
