24 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, including all the women, “(A)Hear the word of Yahweh, all Judah who are (B)in the land of Egypt, 25 thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, saying: ‘As for you and your wives, you have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled it with your hands, saying, “We will (C)certainly perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her.” [a](D)Go ahead and establish your vows, and certainly perform your vows!’ 26 [b]Nevertheless, hear the word of Yahweh, all Judah who are living in the land of Egypt, ‘Behold, I have (E)sworn by My great name,’ says Yahweh, ‘(F)never shall My name be called upon again by the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, “(G)As Lord Yahweh lives.” 27 Behold, I am watching over them (H)for [c]evil and not for good, and (I)all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt will [d]meet their end by the sword and by famine until they [e]are completely consumed. 28 (J)Those who escape the sword will return out of the land of Egypt to the land of Judah [f](K)few in number. Then all the remnant of Judah who have gone to the land of Egypt to sojourn there will know (L)whose word will be established, Mine or theirs. 29 This will be the (M)sign to you,’ declares Yahweh, ‘that I am going to punish you in this place, so that you may know that (N)My words will surely be established against you for [g]evil.’ 30 Thus says Yahweh, ‘Behold, I am going to give over (O)Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt to the hand of his enemies, to the hand of those who seek his life, just as I gave over (P)Zedekiah king of Judah to the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who was his enemy and was seeking his life.’”
Word to Baruch
45 This is the message which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to (Q)Baruch the son of Neriah, when he had (R)written down these words in a book [h]at Jeremiah’s dictation, in the (S)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying: 2 “Thus says Yahweh the God of Israel to you, O Baruch: 3 ‘You said, “Ah, woe is me! For Yahweh has added sorrow to my pain; I am (T)weary with my sighing and have found no rest.”’ 4 Thus you are to say to him, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “Behold, (U)what I have built I am about to pull down, and what I have planted I am about to uproot, that is, the whole land.” 5 But as for you, are you (V)seeking great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for behold, I am going to (W)bring calamity on all flesh,’ declares Yahweh, ‘but I will (X)give your life to you as spoil in all the places where you may go.’”
Word Against Egypt
46 That which came as the word of Yahweh to Jeremiah the prophet (Y)concerning the nations.
2 To (Z)Egypt, concerning the military force of (AA)Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt, which was by the Euphrates River at (AB)Carchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon struck down in the (AC)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:
3 “(AD)Arrange the shield and large shield,
And draw near for the battle!
4 Harness the horses,
And [i]mount the steeds,
And take your stand with helmets on!
(AE)Polish the spears,
Put on the (AF)scale-armor!
5 Why have I seen it?
They are shattered;
They are (AG)drawing back,
And their (AH)mighty men are crushed
And have fled to refuge,
Without facing back;
[j](AI)Terror is on every side!”
Declares Yahweh.
6 Let not the (AJ)swift man flee,
Nor the mighty man escape;
In the north beside the river Euphrates
They have (AK)stumbled and fallen.
7 Who is this that (AL)rises like the Nile,
Like the rivers whose waters toss about?
8 Egypt rises like the Nile,
Even like the rivers whose waters toss about;
And He has said, “I will (AM)rise and cover that land;
I will surely (AN)cause the city to perish, as well as its inhabitants.”
9 Go up, you horses, and [k](AO)drive madly, you chariots,
That the mighty men may go forth:
[l]Ethiopia and [m](AP)Put, who seize the shield,
And the [n](AQ)Lydians, who seize and bend the bow.
10 Indeed, (AR)that day belongs to Lord Yahweh of hosts,
A day of (AS)vengeance, so as to avenge Himself on His adversaries;
And the (AT)sword will devour and be satiated
And [o]drink its fill of their blood;
For there will be a (AU)sacrifice to Lord Yahweh of hosts
In the land of the north by the river Euphrates.
11 Go (AV)up to Gilead and obtain balm,
(AW)O virgin daughter of Egypt!
In vain have you multiplied [p]remedies;
There is (AX)no healing for you.
12 The nations have heard of your (AY)disgrace,
And the earth is full of your (AZ)outcry;
For one (BA)warrior has stumbled over [q]another,
And both of them have fallen down together.
13 This is the [r]message which Yahweh spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the (BB)coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to (BC)strike down the land of Egypt:
14 “Declare in Egypt and cause it to be heard in (BD)Migdol;
Cause it to be heard also in Memphis and (BE)Tahpanhes;
Say, ‘Take your stand and get yourself ready,
For the (BF)sword has devoured those around you.’
15 Why are your (BG)mighty ones thrown down?
They do not stand because Yahweh has (BH)thrust them down.
16 They have repeatedly (BI)stumbled;
Indeed, they have fallen one against another.
Then they said, ‘Rise up! And (BJ)let us return
To our own people and land of our birth
Away from the [s](BK)sword of the oppressor.’
17 [t]They called out there, ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is but (BL)a rumbling;
He has let the appointed time pass by!’
18 As I live,” declares the (BM)King
Whose name is Yahweh of hosts,
“Surely one shall come who looms up like (BN)Tabor among the mountains,
Or like (BO)Carmel by the sea.
19 Make your baggage ready for (BP)exile,
O inhabitant of the (BQ)daughter of Egypt,
For (BR)Memphis will become a desolation;
It will even be turned into ruin and without inhabitants.
20 Egypt is a pretty (BS)heifer,
But a [u]horsefly is coming (BT)from the north—it is coming!
21 Also her (BU)mercenaries in her midst
Are like [v]fattened (BV)calves,
For even they have turned back and have fled away together;
They did not stand their ground.
For the day of their disaster has come upon them,
The time of their (BW)punishment.
22 Its sound moves along like a serpent;
For they move on [w]like a military force
And come to her as woodcutters with axes.
23 They have cut down her (BX)forest,” declares Yahweh;
“Surely it will no longer be searched out,
Even though [x]they are now more numerous than (BY)locusts
And are without number.
24 The daughter of Egypt has been put to shame,
Given over to the hand of the (BZ)people of the north.”
25 Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, says, “Behold, I am going to punish Amon of (CA)Thebes, and (CB)Pharaoh, and Egypt along with her (CC)gods and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who (CD)trust in him. 26 I shall give them into the hand of those who are (CE)seeking their lives, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of his servants. (CF)Afterwards, however, it will be dwelt in like in the days of old,” declares Yahweh.
27 “But as for you, O Jacob My servant, (CG)do not fear,
Nor be dismayed, O Israel!
For behold, I am going to (CH)save you from afar,
And your seed from the land of their captivity;
And Jacob will return and have (CI)quiet
And be at ease, with no one making him tremble.
28 O Jacob My servant, do not fear,” declares Yahweh,
“For (CJ)I am with you.
For I will make a complete destruction of all the nations
Where I have banished you,
Yet I will (CK)not make a complete destruction of you;
But I will (CL)discipline you with justice
And by no means leave you unpunished.”
Word Against Philistia
47 That which came as the word of Yahweh to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the (CM)Philistines, before Pharaoh struck down (CN)Gaza. 2 Thus says Yahweh:
“Behold, waters are going to rise from (CO)the north
And become an overflowing torrent,
And (CP)overflow the land as well as its fullness,
The city and those who inhabit it;
And the men will (CQ)cry out,
And every inhabitant of the land will wail.
3 Because of the noise of the [y](CR)galloping hoofs of his [z]valiant steeds,
The quaking of his chariots, and the tumult of his wheels,
The fathers have not turned back for their children,
Because of the limpness of their hands,
4 On account of the day that is coming
To (CS)destroy all the Philistines,
To cut off from (CT)Tyre and Sidon
Every ally that is left;
For Yahweh is going to destroy the Philistines,
The remnant of the coastland of (CU)Caphtor.
5 (CV)Baldness has come upon Gaza;
(CW)Ashkelon has been ruined.
O remnant of their valley,
How long will you (CX)gash yourself?
6 Ah, (CY)sword of Yahweh,
How long will you not be quiet?
Withdraw into your sheath;
[aa]Be at rest and stay still.
7 How can [ab]it be quiet?
Yahweh has (CZ)given it a command;
Against Ashkelon and against the seacoast—
There He has (DA)assigned it.”
22 Now (A)flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, (B)faith, love, and peace, with those who (C)call on the Lord (D)from a pure heart. 23 But refuse foolish and ignorant (E)speculations, knowing that they (F)produce [a]quarrels. 24 (G)And the Lord’s slave must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, (H)able to teach, patient when wronged, 25 (I)with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, (J)if perhaps God may give them repentance leading to (K)the full knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from (L)the snare of the devil, having been (M)held captive [b]by him to do his will.
Difficult Times Will Come
3 But know this, that (N)in the last days difficult times will come. 2 For men will be (O)lovers of self, (P)lovers of money, (Q)boastful, (R)arrogant, (S)blasphemers, (T)disobedient to parents, (U)ungrateful, (V)unholy, 3 (W)unloving, irreconcilable, [c](X)malicious gossips, without self-control, without gentleness, (Y)without love for good, 4 (Z)treacherous, (AA)reckless, (AB)conceited, (AC)lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 holding to a form of [d](AD)godliness, but having (AE)denied its power. (AF)Keep away from such men as these. 6 For among them are those who [e](AG)enter into households and take captive [f](AH)weak women weighed down with sins, being led on by (AI)various desires, 7 always learning and never able to (AJ)come to the [g]full knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as (AK)Jannes and Jambres (AL)opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, (AM)men of depraved mind, disqualified in regard to the faith. 9 But they will not make further progress, for their (AN)folly will be obvious to all, just (AO)as theirs was also.
10 But you (AP)followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, (AQ)love, [h]perseverance, 11 (AR)persecutions, and (AS)sufferings, such as happened to me at (AT)Antioch, at (AU)Iconium, and at (AV)Lystra. What (AW)persecutions I endured, and out of them all (AX)the Lord rescued me! 12 Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus (AY)will be persecuted.
13 But evil men and impostors (AZ)will proceed from bad to worse, (BA)deceiving and being deceived.
14 But you, (BB)continue in the things you learned and became convinced of, knowing from whom you learned them, 15 and that (BC)from childhood you have known (BD)the sacred writings which are able to (BE)make you wise unto (BF)salvation through faith which is in (BG)Christ Jesus. 16 (BH)All Scripture is [i]God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for [j]training in righteousness, 17 so that (BI)the man of God may be equipped, having been (BJ)thoroughly equipped for every good work.
God of Vengeance, Shine Forth
94 O Yahweh, God of [a](A)vengeance,
God of [b]vengeance, [c](B)shine forth!
2 (C)Be lifted up, O (D)Judge of the earth,
Render recompense (E)to the proud.
3 How long shall the wicked, O Yahweh,
How long shall the (F)wicked exult?
4 They pour forth words, they (G)speak arrogantly;
All workers of iniquity (H)vaunt themselves.
5 They (I)crush Your people, O Yahweh,
And (J)afflict Your inheritance.
6 They (K)slay the widow and the sojourner
And murder the orphans.
7 (L)They have said, “Yah does not see,
Nor does the God of Jacob discern.”
8 Discern, you (M)senseless among the people;
And when will you have insight, (N)you fools?
9 He who (O)planted the ear, [d]does He not hear?
He who formed the eye, [e]does He not see?
10 He who [f](P)disciplines the nations, will He not rebuke,
Even He who (Q)teaches man knowledge?
11 Yahweh (R)knows the thoughts of man,
[g]That they are vanity.
12 Blessed is the man whom (S)You discipline, O Yah,
And (T)whom You teach out of Your law;
13 That You may grant him (U)calm from the (V)days of calamity,
Until (W)a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For (X)Yahweh will not abandon His people,
Nor will He (Y)forsake His inheritance.
15 For [h](Z)judgment will [i]again be righteous,
And all the upright in heart will [j]follow it.
16 Who will (AA)arise for me against evildoers?
Who will take his stand for me (AB)against workers of iniquity?
17 If (AC)Yahweh had not been my help,
My soul would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence.
18 If I should say, “(AD)My foot has stumbled,”
Your lovingkindness, O Yahweh, will hold me up.
19 When my anxious thoughts [k]multiply within me,
Your (AE)consolations delight my soul.
20 Can a [l](AF)throne of destruction be allied with You,
One (AG)which forms [m]trouble by statute?
21 They (AH)band themselves together against the [n]life of the righteous
And (AI)condemn [o]the innocent to death.
22 But Yahweh has been my (AJ)stronghold,
And my God the (AK)rock of my refuge.
23 He has (AL)brought back their [p]iniquity upon them
And will [q](AM)destroy them in their evil;
Yahweh our God will [r]destroy them.
6 He cuts off his own feet and drinks violence
Who sends words by the hand of a fool.
7 Like the legs which hang limp on the lame,
So is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
8 Like [a]one who binds a stone in a sling,
So is he who gives glory to a fool.
