Ezekiel 16:42-17:24

42 So I (A)will [a]cause My wrath against you to be at rest, and My jealousy will depart from you, and I will be quiet, and I will (B)not be provoked anymore. 43 Because you have (C)not remembered the days of your youth but [b]have (D)enraged Me by all these things, behold, I in turn will (E)bring your way down on your own head,” declares Lord Yahweh, “so that you will not commit this lewdness on top of all your other abominations.

44 “Behold, everyone who quotes (F)proverbs will quote this proverb concerning you, saying, ‘[c]Like mother, [d]like daughter.’ 45 You are the daughter of your mother, who loathed her husband and children. You are also the (G)sister of your sisters, who (H)loathed their husbands and children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite. 46 Now your (I)older sister is Samaria, who lives [e]north of you with her [f]daughters; and your younger sister, who lives [g]south of you, is (J)Sodom with her daughters. 47 Yet you have not merely walked in their ways or done according to their abominations; but, as if that were (K)too little, you acted (L)more corruptly in all your ways than they. 48 As I live,” declares Lord Yahweh, “Sodom your sister and her daughters have (M)not done as you and your daughters have done. 49 Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had (N)lofty pride, (O)abundant food, and (P)quiet ease, but she did not strengthen the hand of the (Q)afflicted and needy. 50 Then they were haughty and committed (R)abominations before Me. So I (S)removed them [h]when I saw it. 51 Furthermore, Samaria did not commit half of your sins, for you have multiplied your abominations more than they. Thus you have made your sisters appear (T)righteous by all your abominations which you have done. 52 Also bear your dishonor in that you have [i]made judgment favorable for your sisters. Because of your sins in which you acted (U)more abominably than they, they are more in the right than you. Yes, be also ashamed and bear your dishonor, in that you made your sisters appear righteous.

53 “Nevertheless, I will [j]return their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, and [k]along with them [l]your own captivity, 54 in order that you may bear your dishonor and feel (V)dishonor for all that you have done when you become (W)a comfort to them. 55 Your sisters, Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, [m]will return to their former state, and you with your daughters will also return to your former state. 56 As the name of your sister Sodom was not heard in your mouth in your day of lofty pride, 57 before your (X)wickedness was uncovered, [n]so now you have become the (Y)reproach of the daughters of [o]Edom and of all who are around her, of the daughters of the Philistines—those all around you who despise you. 58 You have (Z)borne the penalty of your lewdness and abominations,” declares Yahweh. 59 For thus says Lord Yahweh, “I will also do with you as you have done, you who have (AA)despised the oath by breaking the covenant.

Yahweh’s Everlasting Covenant

60 “Nevertheless, I Myself will remember My covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an (AB)everlasting covenant with you. 61 Then you will (AC)remember your ways and feel dishonor when you receive your sisters, both your older and your younger; and I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of your covenant. 62 Thus I will (AD)establish My covenant with you, and you shall (AE)know that I am Yahweh, 63 so that you may (AF)remember and be ashamed and (AG)never open your mouth anymore because of your dishonor, when I have (AH)atoned for you for all that you have done,” declares Lord Yahweh.

Parable of Two Eagles and a Vine

17 Now the word of Yahweh came to me saying, “Son of man, propound a riddle and speak a (AI)parable to the house of Israel, and you will say, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “A great (AJ)eagle with (AK)great wings, long pinions, and a full plumage of [p]many colors came to (AL)Lebanon and took away the top of the cedar. He plucked off the topmost of its young twigs and brought it to a land of merchants; he set it in a city of traders. He also took some of the seed of the land and planted it in a (AM)field fit for seed. He [q]placed it beside abundant waters; he set it like a (AN)willow. Then it sprouted and became a low, spreading vine with its foliage turned toward him, but its roots remained under it. So it became a vine and yielded shoots and sent out branches.

“But there was [r]another great eagle with great wings and much plumage; and behold, this vine bent its roots toward him and sent out its foliage toward him from the beds where it was (AO)planted, that he might water it. It was planted in a good field beside abundant waters, that it might yield branches and bear fruit and become a majestic vine.”’ Say, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “Will it succeed? Will he not pull up its roots and cut off its fruit, so that it dries up—so that all its sprouting leaves dry up? And neither by great [s]strength nor by many people can it be raised from its roots again. 10 And behold, though it is planted, will it succeed? Will it not (AP)completely dry up as soon as the east wind strikes it—dry up on the beds where it sprouted?”’”

The King Shall Die in Babylon

11 Moreover, the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, 12 “Say now to the (AQ)rebellious house, ‘Do you not (AR)know what these things mean?’ Say, ‘Behold, the (AS)king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, took its king and princes, and brought them to him in Babylon. 13 He took one of the royal (AT)seed and cut a covenant with him and brought him under (AU)oath. He also took away the (AV)dominant one of the land, 14 that the kingdom might [t](AW)become lowly, not lifting itself up, but keeping his covenant that it might continue. 15 But he (AX)rebelled against him by sending his messengers to Egypt that they might give him horses and many [u]troops. Will he succeed? Will he who does such things (AY)escape? Can he indeed break the covenant and escape? 16 As I live,’ declares Lord Yahweh, ‘Surely in the [v]country of the king who made him king, whose oath he (AZ)despised and whose covenant he broke, [w](BA)in Babylon he shall die. 17 (BB)And Pharaoh with his mighty military force and great assembly will not [x]help him in the war, when they cast up ramps and build siege walls to cut off many lives. 18 Now he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, and behold, he [y](BC)pledged his allegiance, yet did all these things; he shall not escape.’” 19 Therefore, thus says Lord Yahweh, “As I live, surely My oath which he despised and My covenant which he broke, I will [z]put on his head. 20 I will spread My (BD)net over him, and he will be (BE)caught in My snare. Then I will bring him to Babylon and (BF)enter into judgment with him there regarding the unfaithful act which he has committed against Me. 21 All the [aa](BG)choice men in all his troops will fall by the sword, and the remnant will be scattered to every wind; and you will know that I, Yahweh, have spoken.”

22 Thus says Lord Yahweh, “I will also take a sprig from the lofty top of the cedar and set it out; I will pluck from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I will plant it on an (BH)exalted and lofty mountain. 23 On the high mountain of Israel I will plant it, that it may lift up [ab]boughs and yield fruit and become a majestic (BI)cedar. And birds of every [ac]kind will dwell under it; they will dwell in the shade of its [ad]branches. 24 And all the (BJ)trees of the field will know that I am Yahweh; I bring down the exalted tree, exalt the low tree, dry up the green tree, and make the dry tree (BK)flourish. I am Yahweh; I have spoken, and I will do it.”

Hebrews 8

Jesus, High Priest of a New Covenant

Now the main point in what is being said is this: we have such a (A)high priest, who sat down at (B)the right hand of the throne of the (C)Majesty in the heavens, a (D)minister [a]in the [b]holy places and [c]in the (E)true [d]tabernacle, which the Lord (F)pitched, not man. For every (G)high priest is appointed (H)to offer both gifts and sacrifices; so it is necessary that this high priest also have something to offer. Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest at all, since there are those who (I)offer the gifts according to the Law; who serve (J)a copy and (K)shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses [e]was (L)warned by God when he was about to erect the tabernacle; for, “(M)See,” He says, “that you make all things according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.” But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the (N)mediator of (O)a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises. For (P)if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second. For finding fault with them, He says,

(Q)Behold, days are coming, says the [f]Lord,
[g]When I will complete (R)a new covenant
With the house of Israel and with the house of Judah;
(S)Not like the covenant which I made with their fathers
In the day when I took them by the hand
To lead them out of the land of Egypt;
For they did not continue in My covenant,
And I did not care for them, says the [h]Lord.
10 (T)For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
After those days, says the [i]Lord:
[j]I will put My laws into their minds,
And (U)upon their hearts I will write them.
And I will be their God,
And they shall be My people.
11 (V)And they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen,
And everyone his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’
For (W)all will know Me,
From [k]the least to the greatest of them.
12 (X)For I will be merciful to their iniquities,
(Y)And I will remember their sins no more.”

13 [l]When He said, “(Z)A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. (AA)But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is [m]ready to disappear.

Psalm 106:13-31

13 They quickly (A)forgot His works;
They (B)did not wait for His counsel,
14 But (C)craved intensely in the wilderness,
And (D)put God to the test in the wasteland.
15 So He (E)gave them their request,
But (F)sent a [a]wasting disease against their lives.

16 Then they became (G)envious of Moses in the camp,
And of Aaron, the holy one of Yahweh,
17 The (H)earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,
And covered up the [b]company of Abiram.
18 And a (I)fire burned up in their company;
The flame consumed the wicked.

19 They (J)made a calf in Horeb
And worshiped a molten image.
20 Thus they (K)exchanged their glory
For the image of an ox that eats grass.
21 They (L)forgot God their Savior,
Who had done (M)great things in Egypt,
22 (N)Wondrous deeds in the land of Ham
And awesome things by the [c]Red Sea.
23 Therefore (O)He said that He would destroy them,
Had not (P)Moses His chosen one stood in the breach before Him,
To turn away His wrath from [d]eradicating them.
24 Then they (Q)despised the (R)pleasant land;
They (S)did not believe in His word,
25 But (T)grumbled in their tents;
They did not listen to the voice of Yahweh.
26 So He [e](U)swore to them
To make them fall in the wilderness,
27 And to (V)make their seed fall among the nations
And to (W)scatter them in the lands.

28 They then (X)joined themselves to [f]Baal-peor,
And ate (Y)sacrifices offered to the dead.
29 Thus they (Z)provoked Him to anger with their actions,
And the plague broke out among them.
30 Then Phinehas (AA)stood up and interceded,
And so the (AB)plague was checked.
31 And it was (AC)counted to him for righteousness,
From generation to generation forever.

Proverbs 27:7-9

A satisfied soul tramples the honeycomb,
But to a hungry soul any bitter thing is sweet.
Like a (A)bird that wanders from her nest,
So is a man who (B)wanders from his place.
(C)Oil and incense make the heart glad,
So counsel from the [a]soul is sweet to his friend.
