Ezekiel 29-30

Prophesy Against Egypt

29 In the (A)tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth of the month, the word of Yahweh came to me saying, “Son of man, set your face against (B)Pharaoh king of Egypt and prophesy against him and against all (C)Egypt. Speak and say, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

“Behold, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt,
The great [a](D)monster that lies in the midst of his canals of the Nile,
That (E)has said, ‘My Nile is mine, and I myself have made it.’
I will put (F)hooks in your jaws
And make the fish of your canals of the Nile cling to your scales.
And I will bring you up out of the midst of your canals of the Nile,
And all the fish of your canals of the Nile will cling to your scales.
I will (G)abandon you to the wilderness, you and all the fish of your canals of the Nile;
You will fall on the [b]open field; you will not be brought together or [c](H)gathered.
I have given you for (I)food to the beasts of the earth and to the birds of the sky.
Then all the inhabitants of Egypt will know that I am Yahweh
Because they have been only a (J)staff made of reed to the house of Israel.
When they seized you with the hand,
You (K)tore and split open all their [d]shoulders;
And when they leaned on you,
You broke and made all their loins [e]quake.”

‘Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh, “Behold, I will (L)bring upon you a sword, and I will cut off from you man and beast. The (M)land of Egypt will become a desolation and waste. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.

Because [f]you (N)said, ‘The Nile is mine, and I have made it,’ 10 therefore, behold, I am (O)against you and against your canals of the Nile, and I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, from Migdol to Syene and even to the border of [g]Ethiopia. 11 A man’s foot will (P)not pass through it, and the foot of a beast will not pass through it, and it will not be inhabited for forty years. 12 So I will make the land of Egypt a desolation in the (Q)midst of desolated lands. And her cities, in the midst of cities that are laid waste, will be desolate forty years; and I will (R)scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands.”

13 ‘For thus says Lord Yahweh, “At the end of forty years I will (S)gather the Egyptians from the peoples [h]among whom they were scattered. 14 I will return the fortunes of Egypt and make them return to the land of (T)Pathros, to the land of their origin, and there they will be a lowly kingdom. 15 It will be the (U)lowest of the kingdoms, and it will never again lift itself up above the nations. And I will make them so small that they will not (V)have dominion over the nations. 16 And it will never again be the (W)security of the house of Israel, (X)bringing to remembrance the iniquity of their having turned to go after Egypt. Then they will know that I am Lord Yahweh.”’”

17 Now in the (Y)twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 18 “Son of man, (Z)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made his military force [i]labor hard against Tyre; every head was made (AA)bald, and every shoulder was rubbed bare. But he and his military force had no wages from Tyre for the [j]labor that he had [k]labored against it.” 19 Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh, “Behold, I (AB)will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. And he will carry off her [l](AC)abundance and capture her spoil and seize her plunder; and it will be wages for his military force. 20 I have given him the land of Egypt for his work which he [m](AD)labored because they acted for Me,” declares Lord Yahweh.

21 “On that day I will make a (AE)horn sprout for the house of Israel, and I will [n](AF)open your mouth in their midst. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.”

Those Who Support Egypt Will Fall

30 The word of Yahweh came again to me saying, “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

(AG)Wail, ‘Alas for the day!’
For the day is near,
Even (AH)the day of Yahweh is near;
It will be a day of (AI)clouds,
A time of doom for the nations.
A sword will come upon Egypt,
And anguish will be in [o]Ethiopia;
When the slain fall in Egypt,
They (AJ)take away her multitude,
And her foundations are pulled down.

[p]Ethiopia, Put, Lud, all [q](AK)Arabia, [r]Libya, and the [s]people of the land [t]that is in covenant will fall with them by the sword.”

‘Thus says Yahweh,

“Indeed, those who support (AL)Egypt will fall,
And the pride of her strength will come down;
From Migdol to Syene
They will fall within her by the sword,”
Declares Lord Yahweh.
“They will be desolate
In the (AM)midst of the desolated lands;
And her cities will be
In the midst of the cities laid waste.
And they will (AN)know that I am Yahweh,
When I set a (AO)fire in Egypt
And all her helpers are broken.

On that day (AP)messengers will go forth from Me in ships to frighten (AQ)secure [u]Ethiopia; and (AR)anguish will be on them as on the day of Egypt; for behold, it is coming!”

10 ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

(AS)I will also make the multitude of Egypt cease
By the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
11 He and his people with him,
(AT)The most ruthless of the nations,
Will be brought in to make the land a ruin;
And they will draw their swords against Egypt
And fill the land with the slain.
12 Moreover, I will make the (AU)canals of the Nile dry
And (AV)sell the land into the hands of evil men.
And I will make the land desolate,
As well as its fullness,
By the hand of strangers; I, Yahweh, have spoken.”

13 ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

“I will also (AW)destroy the idols
And make the [v]images cease from [w](AX)Memphis.
And there will no longer be a prince in the land of Egypt;
And I will put fear in the land of Egypt.
14 I will make (AY)Pathros desolate,
Set a fire in (AZ)Zoan,
And execute judgments on [x](BA)Thebes.
15 I will pour out My wrath on [y]Sin,
The strong defense of Egypt;
I will also cut off the multitude of [z]Thebes.
16 I will set a fire in Egypt;
[aa]Sin will writhe in anguish;
[ab]Thebes will be breached,
And [ac]Memphis will have [ad]distresses daily.
17 The choice men of [ae](BB)On and of Pi-beseth
Will fall by the sword,
And [af]the women will go into captivity.
18 In (BC)Tehaphnehes the day will [ag]be (BD)dark
When I (BE)break there the bars of the yoke of Egypt.
Then the pride of her strength will cease in her;
A cloud will cover her,
And her daughters will go into captivity.
19 Thus I will (BF)execute judgments on Egypt,
And they will know that I am Yahweh.”’”

Yahweh Scatters the Egyptians

20 In the (BG)eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh of the month, the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 21 “Son of man, I have (BH)broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and behold, it has not been (BI)bound up to be given healing [ah]or wrapped with a bandage, that it may be strong to seize the sword. 22 Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh, ‘Behold, I am (BJ)against Pharaoh king of Egypt and will break his arms, both the strong and the (BK)broken; and I will make the sword (BL)fall from his hand. 23 I will (BM)scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands. 24 For I will (BN)strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put (BO)My sword in his hand; and I will break the arms of Pharaoh so that he will groan before him with the groanings of a wounded man. 25 Thus I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh will fall. Then they will know that I am Yahweh, when I put My sword into the hand of the king of Babylon and he (BP)stretches it out against the land of Egypt. 26 When I scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands, then they will know that I am Yahweh.’”

Hebrews 11:32-12:13

32 And what more shall I say? For time will fail me if I recount (A)Gideon, (B)Barak, (C)Samson, (D)Jephthah, as well as (E)David and (F)Samuel and the prophets, 33 who through faith (G)conquered kingdoms, (H)performed righteousness, (I)obtained promises, (J)shut the mouths of lions, 34 (K)quenched the power of fire, (L)escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong from weakness, (M)became mighty in war, (N)put foreign armies to flight. 35 (O)Women received back their dead by resurrection; and others were tortured, not accepting their [a]release, so that they might obtain a better resurrection; 36 and others [b]experienced mockings and floggings, yes, also (P)chains and imprisonment. 37 They were (Q)stoned, they were (R)sawn in two, [c]they were tempted, they were (S)put to death with the sword. They went about (T)in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, (U)mistreated 38 (of whom the world was not worthy), (V)wandering in desolate places and mountains and caves and holes [d]in the ground.

39 And all these, having [e](W)gained approval through their faith, (X)did not receive [f]what was promised, 40 because God had [g]provided (Y)something better for us, so that (Z)apart from us they would not be made perfect.

Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of Faith

12 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, (AA)laying aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, let us (AB)run with (AC)endurance the race that is set before us, [h]fixing our eyes on Jesus, the [i](AD)author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him (AE)endured the cross, (AF)despising the shame, and has (AG)sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

For (AH)consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary, (AI)fainting [j]in heart.

The Father’s Discipline

(AJ)You have not yet resisted [k](AK)to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin. And you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,

(AL)My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the [l]Lord,
Nor (AM)faint when you are reproved by Him;
(AN)For those (AO)whom the [m]Lord loves He disciplines,
And He flogs every son whom He receives.”

It is for discipline that you endure; (AP)God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, (AQ)of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Furthermore, we [n]had [o]earthly fathers to discipline us, and we (AR)respected them. Shall we not much rather be subject to (AS)the Father of [p]spirits, and (AT)live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our benefit, (AU)so that we may share His holiness. 11 And all discipline (AV)for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful, but to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the (AW)peaceful fruit of righteousness.

12 Therefore, [q](AX)strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble, 13 and (AY)make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather (AZ)be healed.
