Jesus' opponents prove too blind to recognize the signs he has already offered them (16:1-4), and even his own disciples are slow to understand (16:5-12). Peter finally recognizes Jesus' secret identity, though he misunderstands its character (16:13-28). Jesus reveals his glory more dramatically, and his inner circle (including Peter) gains insight (17:1-13). Yet the other disciples still are of little faith (17:14-23), and Peter himself requires further instruction in basic matters (17:25; 18:21).
