Adventure Bible Family Devotions

Duration: 365 days
Shaping Your Character

At his mom’s pottery studio, Alec was helping teach kids how to use a potter’s wheel. “This isn’t coming out right!” said a girl named Rhonda. She was trying to mold the clay as it spun on the wheel in front of her. “What’s wrong?” Alec asked.

She pointed at her bowl. “Look at how crooked the top is. You can’t eat cereal out of a bowl like that!”

Alec examined her work. “I see what you mean. Don’t get frustrated. As long as you keep the clay wet, you can keep working on it until it looks good to you.” He showed her how to use her fingers, then watched her reshape the bowl. “That’s better,” he said. “I bet it’ll hold your Froot Loops now!”

As God forms you into the person he wants you to be, don’t worry. There’s no permanent flaw in you that will ruin your usefulness to him. Just stay soft and pliable in God’s hands. He’ll keep reshaping your character until it’s pleasing to him. God can and will make you into someone he can use.

Bible Verse: You, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter. –Isaiah 64:8

Life in Bible Times: When a potter in ancient days made a bowl, he had a certain shape in mind. He kept forming the clay until it was just right. As long as the clay didn’t harden, he could fix any problems in it. (See Jeremiah 18:1-6.)
