“You have a life-threatening condition and need to get medical attention for this situation immediately.”

I sat staring at the dentist with a stunned look on my face. This appointment was supposed to be for a root canal, but an X-ray revealed a much bigger problem.

A life-threatening condition? I knew I had an infection, but I had ignored the symptoms, completely unaware that it was a serious sinus situation — one that could have had fatal consequences if not addressed.

Over the next two weeks, I saw several specialists and underwent surgery to fix the problem.

Thankfully, I’m fine today. But that experience shook me deeply, forcing me to ask some tough questions:

Am I really living? Am I doing the things that bring joy to my heart? Have I pursued the dreams and callings God has placed within me? Or have I been putting them off — waiting for a better time, a slower season, more confidence, or a stronger faith?

In Psalm 90:12, Moses prayed, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

It’s a sobering reminder that life is short and unpredictable. But it’s also deeply freeing. When we realize our days are numbered, we start to value them more. We stop treating our desires and our purpose like projects we’ll get to “someday.”

Too often, you and I push aside the things that bring us joy, calling them impractical, selfish, or not important enough. But what if those ideas that keep stirring in your heart, the passions that make you come alive, are part of how God designed you to glorify Him?

Maybe it’s writing a book. Starting a business. Going back to school. Leading a group. Creating space in your life for what lights you up. Spending more time with loved ones. But you’ve been waiting for the “right time” …

When we understand how precious time really is, we stop pushing off the good and godly things that stir in our hearts. The things that bring us joy. We stop waiting for life to slow down or line up perfectly. We step forward, trusting that God gave us that desire for a reason and that He has a plan.

Joy isn’t a distraction from your calling. It’s often a signpost pointing toward it. God’s not just calling you to work hard — He’s calling you to live well. Embrace the passions He’s placed on your heart that make you come alive. That spark of joy may be the very invitation He’s using to guide your next step.

You don’t have to wait for a wake-up call to start living intentionally. Stop waiting for someday, and start pursuing God’s call on your life today.

Lord, help me not to waste the time You’ve given me. Teach me to number my days, living with purpose instead of fear. Show me the things I’ve delayed that bring me both joy and meaning, and give me the courage to pursue them now. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
