Is Trusting God at All Times Even Possible?
LYSA TERKEURST

Lee en español

“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” Psalm 62:8 (NIV)

Trust is hard-won for me, and it’s doubly hard to rebuild. Especially when trust is broken by someone I truly thought I could depend on.

An added complication is that when my trust is broken in devastating ways, I find a deeper resistance in my heart to trust God as well. I wonder why a good God who could see what was happening didn’t stop it.

I have a feeling I’m not the only one who struggles with this. Maybe you’ve also experienced God allowing something that’s hard for you to process. Some place where you trusted the Lord, but then His timing, protection, or provision didn’t look at all like you thought it would.

You know God is trustworthy, but it doesn’t feel like you can personally trust Him with this situation. And that causes unwanted skepticism in your relationship with Him.

I don’t have quick, easy answers for you. But I’m learning a lot about what to pursue and what not to pursue in hard life circumstances.

Pursuing answers to why God allows hard things has never given me the peace I want. Even if God did tell me why, I probably wouldn’t see enough of His big picture to agree with Him. I don’t think answers to our “why” questions would make our circumstances better or give us peace.

Instead, I’m choosing to pursue daily reliance on God in the midst of circumstances that make me resistant to trust. Our key verse reminds us, “Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge” (Psalm 62:8).

But how do we begin doing that?

C.S. Lewis says, “Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing had yet been done.” When we rely on God daily, we can experience the fruit of trust. And one of the best places to start is by deciding to declare our God is trustworthy, not determining His trustworthiness based on our circumstances.

Here are three attributes of God we can bank on in declaring He is trustworthy:

  1. Changelessness. (See Hebrews 13:8, Deuteronomy 7:9, and Malachi 3:6.)
  2. Wisdom. (See Isaiah 55:8-9, Psalm 19:7, and Proverbs 3:5-6.)
  3. Peace. (See Colossians 1:20, Isaiah 26:3, and John 14:27.)

To trust God is to trust His character, timing, ways, and love for us. It’s the hardest lesson to learn but the most crucial. We don’t have to know the “how” to trust that He is working things out.

Let’s fix our eyes on Him … choosing to believe God is working out good even in our hard situations … and remind our fragile, human hearts that we can trust Him at all times.

Father God, thank You for reminding me that You are now and forever worthy of my trust. Today, I’m bringing You all of the places where I’m struggling to trust You, and I’m asking You to help me shift my focus from the difficulties in front of me to the unchanging truths about who You are. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
