Daniel 9:1 - Hosea 13:6

3 Daniel desireth to have that performed of God, which he had promised concerning the return of the people from their banishment in Babylon. 5 A true confession. 20 Daniel’s prayer is heard. 21 Gabriel the Angel expoundeth unto him the vision of the seventy weeks. 24 The anointing of Christ. 25 The building again of Jerusalem. 26 The death of Christ.

In the first year of Darius the son of [a]Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the [b]realm of the Chaldeans,

Even in the first year of his reign, I Daniel understood by [c]books the number of the years, whereof the Lord had spoken unto Jeremiah the Prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolation of Jerusalem.

And I turned my face unto the Lord God, and [d]sought by prayer and supplications with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession, saying, Oh Lord God which art [e]great and fearful, and keepest covenant and mercy toward them which love [f]thee, and toward them that keep thy commandments,

We have sinned and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, yea, we have rebelled, and have departed from thy precepts, and from thy judgments.

For we would not obey thy servants the Prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

O Lord, [g]righteousness belongeth unto thee, and unto us [h]open shame, as appeareth this day unto every man of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, yea, unto all Israel, both near and far off, through all the country, whither thou hast driven them, because of their offences, that they have committed against thee.

O Lord, unto us appertaineth open shame, to our [i]Kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.

Yet compassion and forgiveness is in the Lord our God, albeit we have rebelled against him.

10 For we have not obeyed the [j]voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his laws, which he hath laid before us by the ministry of his servants the Prophets.

11 Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy Law, and are turned back, and have not heard thy voice: therefore the [k]curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the Law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him.

12 And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that [l]judged us, by bringing upon us a great plague: for under the whole heaven hath not been the like, as hath been brought upon Jerusalem.

13 All this plague is come upon us, as it is written in the Law of Moses: yet made we not our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turn from our iniquities and understand thy truth.

14 Therefore hath the Lord [m]made ready the plague, and brought it upon us: for the Lord our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we would not hear his voice.

15 (A)And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as appeareth this day, we have sinned, we have done wickedly.

16 O Lord, according to all thy [n]righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy wrath be turned away from thy city Jerusalem thine holy Mountain: because of our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are a reproach to all that are about us.

17 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to [o]shine upon thy Sanctuary, that lieth waste for the [p]Lord’s sake.

18 O my God, incline thine ear and hear: open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city whereupon thy Name is called: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our own [q]righteousness, but for thy great tender mercies.

19 O Lord hear, O Lord forgive, O Lord [r]consider, and do it: defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy Name is called upon thy city, and thy people.

20 ¶ And while I was speaking and praying, and confessing my sin, and the sin of my people Israel, and did present my supplication before the Lord my God, for the holy Mountain of my God,

21 Yea, while I was speaking in prayer, even the man (B)Gabriel, whom I had seen before in the vision, came flying, and touched me about the time of the evening oblation.

22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee knowledge and understanding.

23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to show thee, for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter and consider the vision.

24 Seventy [s]weeks are determined upon [t]thy people and upon thine holy city, to finish the wickedness, and to seal up [u]the sins, and to reconcile the iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

25 Know therefore and understand that from [v]the going forth of the commandment to bring again the people, and to build Jerusalem, unto Messiah the Prince, shall be seven [w]weeks and [x]threescore and two weeks, and the street shall be built again, and the wall even in a [y]troublous time.

26 And after threescore and two [z]weeks, shall Messiah be slain, and shall [aa]have nothing, and the people of the [ab]prince that shall come, shall destroy the city and the Sanctuary, and the end thereof shall be with a flood: and unto the end of the battle it shall be destroyed by desolations.

27 And he [ac]shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to [ad]cease, [ae]and for the overspreading of the abominations, he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

10 1 There appeareth unto Daniel a man clothed in linen, 11 which showeth him wherefore he is sent.

In the [af]third year of Cyrus King of Persia, a thing was revealed unto Daniel (whose name was called Belteshazzar) and the word was true, but the time appointed was [ag]long, and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision.

At the same time I Daniel was in heaviness for three weeks of days.

I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three weeks of days were fulfilled.

And in the four and twentieth day of the [ah]first month, as I [ai]was by the side of that great river, even Hiddekel,

And I lifted mine eyes, and looked, and behold, there was a man [aj]clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of (C)Uphaz.

His body also was like the Chrysolite, and his face (to look upon) like the lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet were like in color to polished brass, and the voice of his words was like the voice of a multitude.

And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me, saw not the vision: but a great fear fell upon them, so that they fled away and hid themselves.

Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for [ak]my strength was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no power.

Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, I slept on my face, and my face was toward the ground.

10 And behold, an [al]hand touched me, which set me up upon my knees, and upon the palms of mine hands,

11 And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand in thy place: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had said this word unto me, I stood trembling.

12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to humble thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.

13 But the [am]prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but lo, [an]Michael one of the chief princes, came to help me, and I remained there by the Kings of Persia.

14 Now I am come to show thee what shall come to thy people in the latter days: for yet the [ao]vision is for many days.

15 And when he spake these words unto me, I set my face toward the ground, and held my tongue.

16 And behold, [ap]one like the similitude of the sons of man touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my Lord, [aq]by the vision my sorrows are returned upon me, and I have retained no strength.

17 For how can the servant of this my Lord talk with my Lord being such one? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me.

18 Then there came again, and touched me, one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me,

19 And said, O man, greatly beloved, fear not: [ar]peace be unto thee: be strong and of good courage. And when he had spoken unto me, I [as]was strengthened, and said, Let my Lord speak: for thou hast strengthened me.

20 Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I am come unto thee? but now will I return to fight with the Prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the [at]Prince of Greece shall come.

21 But I will show thee that which is decreed in the Scripture of truth: [au]and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.

11 A prophecy of the kingdoms, which should be enemies to the Church of God, as of Persia, 3 Of Greece, 5 of Egypt, 28 of Syria, 36 and of the Romans.

Also I, in the first year of Darius of the Medes, even I [av]stood to encourage and to strengthen him.

And now will I show thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet [aw]three kings in Persia, and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength, and by his riches he shall stir up [ax]all against the realm of Greece.

But a [ay]mighty King shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his pleasure.

And when he shall stand up, [az]his kingdom shall be broken, [ba]and shall be divided toward the [bb]four winds of heaven: and not to his [bc]posterity, nor according to [bd]his dominion, which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up even to be for others besides [be]those.

And the [bf]King of the South shall be mighty, and one of [bg]his princes, and shall prevail against him, and bear rule: his dominion shall be a great dominion.

And in the end of years they shall be joined together: for the King’s [bh]daughter of the South shall come to the King of the North to make an agreement, but she shall not retain the power of the [bi]arm, neither shall [bj]he continue, nor his [bk]arm: but she shall be delivered to death, and they that brought her, and he [bl]that begat her, and he that comforted her, in these times.

But out of the bud of her [bm]roots shall one stand up in his stead, [bn]which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the King of the North, and do with them as he list, and shall prevail,

And shall also carry captives into Egypt their gods: with their molten images, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold, and he shall continue [bo]more years than the king of the North.

So the king of the South shall come into his kingdom, and shall return into his own land.

10 Wherefore his [bp]sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a mighty great army: and one [bq]shall come, and overflow, and pass through: then shall he [br]return, and be stirred up at his fortress.

11 And the King of the South shall be angry, and shall come forth, and fight with him, even with the king of the North: for he shall set forth a great [bs]multitude, and the multitude shall be given into his hand.

12 Then the multitude shall be proud, and their heart shall be lifted up: for he shall cast down thousands: but he shall not still prevail,

13 For the King of the North [bt]shall return, and shall set forth a greater multitude than afore, and shall come forth (after certain years) with a mighty army, and great riches.

14 And at the same time there shall [bu]many stand up against the king of the South: also the rebellious children of thy [bv]people shall exalt themselves to establish the vision, but they shall fall.

15 So the King of the North shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the strong city: and the arms of the South shall [bw]not resist, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand.

16 But he that shall come, shall do unto him as he list, and none shall stand against him: and he shall stand in the [bx]pleasant land, which by his hand shall be consumed.

17 Again he shall [by]set his face to enter with the power of his whole kingdom, and his confederates with him: thus shall he do, and he shall give him the [bz]daughter of women to destroy [ca]her: but [cb]she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him.

18 After this shall he turn his face unto the [cc]isles, and shall take many, but a prince [cd]shall cause his shame to light upon him, besides that he shall cause his own shame to turn upon [ce]himself.

19 For he shall turn his face toward the forts of [cf]his own land: but he shall be overthrown and fall, and be no more [cg]found.

20 [ch]Then shall stand up in his place in the glory of the kingdom, one that shall raise taxes: but after few days he shall be destroyed, neither in [ci]wrath, nor in battle.

21 And in his place shall stand up a [cj]vile person, to whom they shall not give the honor of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

22 And the [ck]arms shall be overthrown with a flood before him, and shall be broken: and also the prince of the [cl]covenant.

23 And after [cm]the league made with him, he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and overcome with a [cn]small people.

24 He shall enter into the quiet and plentiful province, and he shall do that which his fathers [co]have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers: he shall divide among them the prey and the spoil, and the substance, yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strongholds, even for a [cp]time.

25 Also he shall stir up his power, and his courage against the King of the South with a great army, and the King of the South shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army: but he shall not [cq]stand: for they shall forecast and practice against him.

26 Yea, they that feed of the portion of [cr]his meat, shall destroy him: and his army [cs]shall overflow: and many shall fall, and be slain.

27 And both these Kings’ hearts shall be to do [ct]mischief, and they shall talk of deceit at one table: but it shall not avail: for [cu]yet the end shall be at the time appointed.

28 Then shall he return into his land with great [cv]substance: for his heart shall be against the holy covenant: so shall he do and return to his own land.

29 At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the South: but the last shall not be as the first.

30 For the ships [cw]of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be sorry and return and fret against the holy covenant: so shall he do, he shall even return [cx]and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.

31 And arms [cy]shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the Sanctuary [cz]of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall set up the abominable desolation.

32 And such as wickedly [da]break the covenant, shall he cause to sin by flattery: but the people that do know their God, shall prevail and prosper.

33 And they that understand among the [db]people, shall instruct many: [dc]yet they shall fall by sword, and by flame, by captivity and by spoil many days.

34 Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a [dd]little help: but many shall cleave unto them [de]feignedly.

35 And some of them [df]of understanding shall fall to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, till the time be out: for there is a time appointed.

36 And the [dg]king shall do what him list: he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself against all, that is God, and shall speak marvelous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper, till the wrath [dh]be accomplished: for the determination is made.

37 Neither shall he regard the [di]God of his fathers, nor the desires [dj]of women, nor care for any God: for he shall magnify himself above all.

38 But in his place shall he honor the [dk]god Mauzzim, and the god whom his fathers knew not, shall he honor with [dl]gold and with silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.

39 Thus shall he do in [dm]the holds of Mauzzim with a strange god whom he shall acknowledge: he shall increase his glory, and shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.

40 And at the end of time shall the king of the [dn]South push at him, and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships, and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass through.

41 He shall enter also into the [do]pleasant land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.

42 He shall stretch forth his hands also upon the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape.

43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt, and of the Libyans, and of the black Mores where he shall pass.

44 But the tidings out of the East and the North shall [dp]trouble him: therefore he shall go forth [dq]with great wrath to destroy and root out many.

45 And he shall plant the tabernacles [dr]of his palace between the seas in the glorious and holy mountain, yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.

12 1 Of the deliverance of the Church by Christ.

And at that [ds]time shall Michael stand up, the great prince, which standeth for the children of thy people, and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there began to be a nation unto that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, everyone that shall be found written in the book.

And many [dt]of them that sleep in the dust of the earth, shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and perpetual contempt.

And they that be [du]wise, shall shine, as the brightness of the firmament: and they that [dv]turn many to righteousness, shall shine as the stars, forever and ever.

But thou, O Daniel, [dw]shut up the words, and seal the book [dx]till the end of the time: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

¶ Then I Daniel looked, and behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the brink of the [dy]river, and the other on that side of the brink of the river.

And one said unto the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, When shall be the end of these wonders?

And I heard the man clothed in linen which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his [dz]right hand, and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth forever, that it shall tarry for a [ea]time two times and an half: and when he shall have accomplished [eb]to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

Then I heard it, but I understood it not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things?

And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up, and sealed, till the end of the time.

10 Many shall be purified, made white, and tried: but the wicked shall do wickedly, and none of the wicked shall have understanding: but the wise shall understand.

11 And from the time that the [ec]daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abominable desolation set up, there [ed]shall be a thousand, two hundred and ninety days.

12 Blessed is he that waiteth and cometh to the thousand, three hundred and [ee]five and thirty days.

13 But go [ef]thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest and stand up in thy lot, at the end of the days.

Hosea

1 The time wherein Hosea prophesied. 2 The idolatry of the people. 10 The calling of the Gentiles. 11 Christ is the head of all people.

The word of the Lord that came unto Hosea the son of Beeri, in the days [eg]of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, [eh]kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel.

At the beginning the Lord spake by Hosea, and the Lord said unto Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife [ei]of fornications, and children of fornications: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord.

So he went, and took [ej]Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, which conceived and bare him a son.

And the Lord said unto him, Call his name [ek]Jezreel: for yet a little, and I will visit the blood of Jezreel upon the house of [el]Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel.

And at that [em]day will I also break the bow of Israel in the valley of Jezreel.

She conceived yet again, and bare a daughter, and God said unto him, Call her name [en]Lo-Ruhamah: for I will no more have pity upon the house of Israel: but I will utterly [eo]take them away.

Yet I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will [ep]save them by the Lord their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen.

Now when she had weaned Lo-Ruhamah, she conceived, and bare a son.

Then said God, Call his name [eq]Lo-Ammi: for ye are not my people: therefore will I not be yours.

10 Yet the number of the [er]children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor told: and in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

11 Then shall the children of Judah, and the children of Israel be [es]gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great is the [et]day of Jezreel.

1 The people is called to repentance. 5 He showeth their idolatry and threateneth them except they repent.

Say unto your [eu]brethren, Ammi, and to your sisters, Ruhamah,

Plead with your [ev]mother: plead with her: for she is not my wife, neither am I her husband: but let her take away her fornications out of her sight, and her adulteries [ew]from between her breasts.

Lest I strip her naked, and [ex]set her as in the day that she was [ey]born, and make her as a wilderness, and leave her like a dry land, and slay her for thirst.

And I will have no pity upon her children: for they be the [ez]children of fornication.

For their mother hath played the harlot: she that conceived them, hath done shamefully: for she said, I will go after thy [fa]lovers that give me my bread and my water, my wool, and my flax, mine oil and my drink.

Therefore behold, I will stoop [fb]thy way with thorns, and make an hedge, that she shall not find her paths.

Though she follow after her lovers, yet shall she not come at them: though she seek them, yet shall she not find them: then shall she say, [fc]I will go and return to my first husband: for at that time was I better than now.

Now she did not know that I [fd]gave her corn, and wine, and oil, and multiplied her silver and gold, which they bestowed upon Baal.

Therefore will I return, and take away [fe]my corn in the time thereof, and my wine in the season thereof, and will recover my wool and my flax lent, to cover her shame.

10 And now will I discover her [ff]lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and no man shall deliver her out of mine hand.

11 I will also cause all her mirth to cease, her feast days, her new moons, and her Sabbaths, and all her solemn feasts.

12 And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees, whereof she hath said, These are my rewards that my lovers have given me: and I will make them as a forest, and the wild beasts shall eat them.

13 And I will visit upon her the days of [fg]Baal, wherein she burnt incense to them: and she decked herself with her [fh]earrings and her jewels, and she followed her lovers, and forgot me, saith the Lord.

14 Therefore behold, I will [fi]allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak friendly unto her.

15 And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley [fj]of Achor for the door of hope, and she shall [fk]sing there as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.

16 And at that day, saith the Lord, thou shalt call me [fl]Ishi, and shalt call me no more [fm]Baali.

17 For I will take away the names of Baal out of her mouth, and they shall be no more remembered by their [fn]names.

18 And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the [fo]wild beasts, and with the fowls of the heaven, and with that that creepeth upon the earth: and I will break the bow, and the sword and the battle out of the earth: and will make them to sleep safely.

19 And I will marry thee unto me forever: yea, I will marry thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in mercy, and in compassion.

20 I will even marry thee unto me in [fp]faithfulness, and thou shalt know the Lord.

21 And in that day I will hear, saith the Lord, I will even hear [fq]the heavens, and they shall hear the earth,

22 And the earth shall hear the corn, and the wine, and the oil, and they shall hear Jezreel.

23 And I will sow her unto me in the earth, and I will have mercy upon her, that was not pitied, (D)and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people. And they shall say, Thou art my God.

1 The Jews shall be cast off for their idolatry. 5 Afterward they shall return to the Lord.

Then said the Lord to me, [fr]Go yet, and love a woman (beloved of her husband, and was an harlot) according to the love of the Lord toward the children of Israel: yet they looked to other gods, and [fs]loved the wine bottles.

So [ft]I bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of barley, and an half homer of barley.

And I said unto her, Thou shalt abide with [fu]me many days: thou shalt not play the harlot, and thou shalt be to none other man, and I will be so unto thee.

For the children of Israel shall [fv]remain many days without a king and without a [fw]prince, and without an offering, and without an image, and without an Ephod, and without Teraphim.

Afterward shall the children of Israel convert and seek the Lord their God, and [fx]David their king, and shall fear the Lord and his goodness in the latter days.

A complaint against the people and the priests of Israel.

Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel: for the Lord [fy]hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.

By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and whoring, they break out, and [fz]blood toucheth blood.

Therefore shall the land mourn, and everyone that dwelleth therein shall be cut off, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of the heaven, and also the fishes of the sea shall be taken away.

Yet [ga]let none rebuke, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that rebuke the Priest.

Therefore shalt thou fall in the [gb]day, and the Prophet shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy [gc]mother.

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because [gd]thou hast refused knowledge, I will also refuse thee that thou shalt be no Priest to me: and seeing [ge]thou hast forgotten the Law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

As they were [gf]increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.

[gg]They eat up the sins of my people, and lift up their minds in their iniquity.

And there shall be like people like [gh]priest: for I will visit their ways upon them, and reward them their deeds.

10 For they shall eat, and not have enough, they shall [gi]commit adultery, and shall not increase, because they have left off to take heed to the Lord.

11 [gj]Whoredom, and wine, and new wine take away their heart.

12 My [gk]people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff teacheth them: for the [gl]spirit of fornications hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.

13 They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills under the oaks, and the poplar tree, and the elm, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall be [gm]harlots, and your spouses shall be whores.

14 I will not [gn]visit your daughters when they are harlots: nor your spouses, when they are whores: for they themselves are separated with harlots, and sacrifice with whores: therefore the people that doth not understand, shall fall.

15 Though thou Israel, play the harlot, yet [go]let not Judah sin: come not ye unto [gp]Gilgal, neither go ye up to [gq]Beth Aven, nor swear, The Lord liveth.

16 For Israel is rebellious as an unruly heifer. Now the Lord will feed them as a [gr]lamb in a large place.

17 Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.

18 Their drunkenness stinketh: they have committed whoredom: their rulers love to say with shame, [gs]Bring ye.

19 The wind hath [gt]bound them up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed of their sacrifices.

1 Against the Priests and rulers of Israel. 13 The help of man is in vain.

O ye Priests, hear this, and hearken ye, O house of Israel, and give ye ear, O house of the King: for judgment is toward you, because you have been a [gu]snare on Mizpah, and a net spread upon Tabor.

Yet they were profound to decline to [gv]slaughter, though I have been a [gw]rebuker of them all.

I know [gx]Ephraim, and Israel is not hid from me: for now, O Ephraim, thou art become an harlot, and Israel is defiled.

They will not give their minds to turn unto their God: for the spirit of fornication is in the midst of them, and they have not known the Lord.

And the [gy]pride of Israel doth testify to his face: therefore shall Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity: Judah also shall fall with them.

They shall go with their sheep, and with their bullocks, to seek the Lord: but they shall not find him: for he hath withdrawn himself from them.

They have transgressed against the Lord: for they have begotten [gz]strange children: now shall [ha]a month devour them with their portions.

Blow ye the trumpet in Gibeah, and the shame in Ramah: cry out at Beth Aven, after thee, O [hb]Benjamin.

Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of Israel have I caused to [hc]know the truth.

10 The princes of Judah were like them that [hd]remove the bound: therefore will I pour out my wrath upon them like water.

11 Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after the [he]commandment.

12 Therefore will I be unto Ephraim as a moth, and to the house of Judah as a rottenness.

13 When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah his wound, then went Ephraim unto [hf]Assyria, and sent unto King [hg]Jareb: yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound.

14 For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a lion’s whelp, to the house of Judah: I, even I will spoil and go away: I will take away, and none shall rescue it.

15 I will go, and return to my place, till they acknowledge their fault, and seek me: in their affliction, they will seek me diligently.

1 Affliction causeth a man to turn to God. 9 The wickedness of the Priests.

Come, and let [hh]us return to the Lord: for he hath spoiled, and he will heal us: he hath wounded us, and he will bind us up.

After two days will [hi]he revive us, and in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.

Then shall we have knowledge, and endeavor ourselves to know the Lord: his going forth is prepared as the morning, and he shall come unto us as the rain, and as the latter rain unto the earth.

O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, how shall I entreat thee? for [hj]your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the morning dew it goeth away.

Therefore have I [hk]cut down by the Prophets: I have slain them by the words of my mouth, and thy [hl]judgments were as the light that goeth forth.

For I desired [hm]mercy, and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

But they [hn]like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they trespassed against me.

[ho]Gilead is a city of them that work iniquity, and is polluted with blood.

And as the thieves wait for a man, so the company of Priests murder in the way by consent: for they work mischief.

10 I have seen villainy in the house of Israel: there is the whoredom of Ephraim: Israel is defiled.

11 Yea, Judah hath set a [hp]plant for thee, while I would return the captivity of my people.

1 Of the vices and wantonness of the people. 12 Of their punishment.

When I would have healed Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim was discovered, and the wickedness of Samaria: for they have dealt falsely: and [hq]the thief cometh in, and the robber spoileth without.

And they consider not in their hearts, that I remember all their wickedness: now their own inventions have beset them about: they are in my sight.

They make the [hr]king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies.

They are all adulterers, and as a very [hs]oven heated by the baker, which ceaseth from raising up, and from kneading the dough until it be leavened.

This is the [ht]day of our king: the princes have made him sick with flagons of wine: he stretcheth out his hand to scorners.

For they have made ready their heart like an oven while they lie in wait: their baker sleepeth all the night: in the morning it burneth as a flame of fire.

They are all hot as an oven, and have [hu]devoured their judges: all their kings are fallen: there is none among them that calleth unto me.

Ephraim hath [hv]mixed himself among the people. Ephraim is as a cake on the hearth not turned.

Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, [hw]gray hairs are here, and there upon him, yet he knoweth not.

10 And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face, and they do not return to the Lord their God, nor seek him for all this.

11 Ephraim also is like a dove deceived without [hx]heart: they call to Egypt: they go to Assyria.

12 But when they shall go, I will spread my net upon them, and draw them down as the fowls of the heaven: I will chastise them as their [hy]Congregation hath heard.

13 Woe unto them: for they have fled away from me: destruction shall be unto them, because they have transgressed against me: though I have [hz]redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against me.

14 And they have not cried unto me with their hearts, [ia]when they howled upon their beds: [ib]they assembled themselves for corn, and wine, and they rebel against me.

15 Though I have bound and strengthened their arm, yet do they imagine mischief against me.

16 They return, but not to the most high: they are like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword, for the rage [ic]of their tongues: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.

1 The destruction of Judah and Israel, because of their idolatry.

Set the trumpet to thy [id]mouth: he shall come as an eagle against the House of the Lord, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my Law.

Israel shall [ie]cry unto me, My God, we know thee.

Israel hath cast off the thing that is good: the enemy shall pursue him.

They have set up a [if]king, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols: therefore shall they be destroyed.

Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off: mine anger is kindled against them: how long will they be without [ig]innocency!

[ih]For it came even from Israel: the workman made it, therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.

For they have [ii]sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall bring forth no meal: if so be it brought forth, the strangers shall devour it.

Israel is devoured, now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein is no pleasure.

For they are gone up to Assyria: they are as a [ij]wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers.

10 Yet though they have hired among the nations, now will I gather them and they shall sorrow a little for the [ik]burden of the king and the princes.

11 Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin, his altars shall be to sin.

12 I have written to them the great things of my Law: but they were counted as a [il]strange thing.

13 They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat it: but the [im]Lord accepteth them not: now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.

14 For Israel hath forgotten his maker, and buildeth Temples, and Judah hath increased strong cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.

Of the hunger and captivity of Israel.

Rejoice not, O Israel for joy [in]as other people: for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God: thou hast loved [io]a reward upon every corn floor.

[ip]The floor, and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail in her.

They will not dwell in the Lord’s land, but Ephraim will return to Egypt, and they will eat unclean things in Assyria.

They shall not offer [iq]wine to the Lord, neither shall their sacrifices be pleasant unto him: but they shall be unto them as the bread of mourners: all that eat thereof, shall be polluted: for their bread [ir]for their souls shall not come into the house of the Lord.

What will ye do [is]then in the solemn day, and in the day of the feast of the Lord?

For lo, they are gone from [it]destruction: but Egypt shall gather them up, and Memphis shall bury them: the nettle shall possess the pleasant places of their silver, and the thorn shall be in their tabernacles.

The days of visitation are come: the days of recompense are come: Israel shall know it: [iu]the Prophet is a fool: the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity: therefore the hatred is great.

The watchman of Ephraim [iv]should be with my God: but the Prophet is the snare of a fowler in all his ways, and hatred in the house of his God.

They [iw]are deeply set: they are corrupt as in the days of Gibeah: therefore he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins.

10 I found Israel like [ix]grapes in the wilderness: I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to Baal Peor, and separated themselves unto that shame, and their abominations were according to [iy]their lovers.

11 Ephraim their glory shall flee away like a bird: from the birth [iz]and from the womb, and from the conception.

12 Though they bring up their children, yet I will deprive them from being men: yea, woe to them, when I depart from them.

13 Ephraim, as I saw, is as a tree [ja]in Tyre planted in a cottage: but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the murderer.

14 O Lord, give them: what wilt thou give them? give them a [jb]barren womb and dry breasts.

15 All their wickedness is in [jc]Gilgal: for there do I hate them: for the wickedness of their inventions, I will cast them out of mine House: I will love them no more: all their princes are rebels.

16 Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up: they can bring no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the dearest of their body.

17 My God will cast them away, because they did not obey him: and they shall wander among the nations.

10 1 Against Israel and his idols. 14 His destruction for the same.

Israel is a [jd]empty vine, yet hath it brought forth fruit unto itself, and according to the multitude of the fruit thereof he hath increased the altars: according to the [je]goodness of their land they have made fair images.

Their heart is [jf]divided: now shall they be found faulty: he shall break down their altars; he shall destroy their images.

For now they shall say, We have no [jg]King because we feared not the Lord: and what should a King do to us?

They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making [jh]a covenant: thus [ji]judgment groweth as wormwood in the furrows of the field.

The inhabitants of Samaria shall [jj]fear because of the calf of Beth Aven: for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the [jk]Chemarims thereof, that rejoiced on it for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it.

It shall be also brought to Assyria, for a present unto king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel.

Of Samaria, the king thereof is destroyed, as the foam upon the water.

The high places also of [jl]Aven shall be destroyed, even the sin of Israel: the thorn and the thistle shall grow upon their altars, and they shall say to the mountains, (E)Cover us, and to the hills, Fall upon us.

O Israel, thou hast [jm]sinned from the days of Gibeah: there they [jn]stood: the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not [jo]touch them.

10 It is my desire [jp]that I should chastise them, and the people shall be gathered against them, when they shall gather themselves in their two [jq]furrows.

11 And Ephraim is as a heifer used to delight in [jr]threshing: but I will pass by her [js]fair neck: I will make Ephraim to ride: Judah shall plow, and Jacob shall break his clods.

12 Sow to yourselves in righteousness: reap after the measure of mercy: [jt]break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.

13 But you have plowed wickedness: ye have reaped iniquity: you have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thine own ways, and in the multitude of thy strong men,

14 Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy munitions shall be destroyed, as [ju]Shalman destroyed Beth Arbel in the day of battle: the mother with the children was dashed in pieces.

15 So shall Bethel do unto you, because of your malicious wickedness: in a morning shall the king of Israel be destroyed.

11 1 The benefits of the Lord toward Israel. 5 Their ingratitude against him.

When Israel [jv]was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

They called them, but they [jw]went thus from them: they sacrificed unto Baal, and burnt incense to images.

I led Ephraim also, as one should bear them in his arms: but they knew not that I healed them.

I led them with cords [jx]of a man, even with bands of love, and I was to them, as he was taketh off the yoke from their jaws, and I laid the meat unto them.

He shall no more return into the land of Egypt: but Assyria shall be his [jy]King, because they refused to convert.

And the sword shall fall on his cities, and shall consume his bars, and devour them, because of their own counsels.

And my people are bent to rebellion against me: though [jz]they called them to the most high, yet none at all would exalt him.

[ka]How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee, as [kb]Admah? how shall I set thee, as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me: [kc]my repentings are rouled together.

I will not execute the fierceness of my wrath: I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man, the holy one in the midst of thee, and I will not [kd]enter into the city.

10 They shall walk after the Lord: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children of the West shall fear.

11 [ke]They shall fear as a sparrow out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria, and I will place them in their houses, saith the Lord.

12 Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with [kf]God, and is faithful with the Saints.

12 He admonisheth by Jacob’s example to trust in God, and not in riches.

Ephraim is fed [kg]with the wind, and followeth after the East wind: he increaseth daily lies and destruction, and they do make a covenant with Assyria, and [kh]oil is carried into Egypt.

The Lord hath also a controversy with [ki]Judah, and will visit Jacob, according to his ways: according to his works, will he recompense him.

He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had [kj]power with God,

And had [kk]power over the Angel, and prevailed: he wept and prayed unto him: [kl]he found him in Bethel, and there he spake with us.

Yea, the Lord God of hosts, the Lord is himself his memorial.

Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and hope still in thy God.

He is [km]Canaan: the balances of decree are in his hand: he loveth to oppress.

And Ephraim said, Notwithstanding I am rich, I have found me out riches in all my labors: they shall find none iniquity in me, [kn]that were wickedness.

Though I am the Lord thy God, from the land of Egypt, yet will I make thee to dwell in the tabernacles, as in [ko]the days of the solemn feast.

10 I have also spoken by the Prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes by the ministry of the Prophets.

11 Is there [kp]iniquity in Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal, and their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the field.

12 [kq]And Jacob fled into the country of Aram, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep,

13 And by a [kr]Prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a Prophet was he reserved.

14 But Ephraim provoked him with high places: therefore shall his blood be poured upon him, and his reproach shall his Lord reward him.

13 1 The abomination of Israel, 9 and cause of their destruction.

When Ephraim spake, there was [ks]trembling: he [kt]exalted himself in Israel, but he hath sinned in Baal, [ku]and is dead.

And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding: they were all the work of the craftsmen: they say one to another while they sacrifice a [kv]man, Let them kiss the calves.

Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the morning dew that passeth away, as the chaff that is driven with a whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke that goeth out of the chimney.

Yet I am the Lord thy God [kw]from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no God but me: for there is no Savior beside me.

I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of drought.

As in their pastures, so were they filled: they were filled, and their heart was exalted: therefore have they forgotten me.
