1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timothy, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace.

² We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers; ³ remembering without ceasing your work of faith and labor of love and ^[a]patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, before ^[b]our God and Father; ⁴ knowing, brethren beloved of God, your election, ^5 [c]how that our ^[d]gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much ^[e]assurance; even as ye know what manner of men we showed ourselves toward you for your sake. ⁶ And ye became imitators of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit; ⁷ so that ye became an ensample to all that believe in Macedonia and in Achaia. ⁸ For from you hath sounded forth the word of the Lord, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith to God-ward is gone forth; so that we need not to speak anything. ⁹ For they themselves report concerning us what manner of entering in we had unto you; and how ye turned unto God from idols, to serve a living and true God, ¹⁰ and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, who delivereth us from the wrath to come.

2 For yourselves, brethren, know our entering in unto you, that it hath not been found vain: ² but having suffered before and been shamefully treated, as ye know, at Philippi, we waxed bold in our God to speak unto you the ^[f]gospel of God in much conflict. ³ For our exhortation is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: ⁴ but even as we have been approved of God to be intrusted with the ^[g]gospel, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God who proveth our hearts. ⁵ For neither at any time were we found using words of flattery, as ye know, nor a cloak of covetousness, God is witness; ⁶ nor seeking glory of men, neither from you nor from others, when we might have ^[h]claimed authority as apostles of Christ. ⁷ But we were ^[i]gentle in the midst of you, as when a nurse cherisheth her own children: ⁸ even so, being affectionately desirous of you, we were well pleased to impart unto you, not the ^[j]gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were become very dear to us. ⁹ For ye remember, brethren, our labor and travail: working night and day, that we might not burden any of you, we preached unto you the ^[k]gospel of God. ¹⁰ Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and righteously and unblamably we behaved ourselves toward you that believe: ¹¹ as ye know how we dealt with each one of you, as a father with his own children, exhorting you, and encouraging you, and testifying, ¹² to the end that ye should walk worthily of God, who ^[l]calleth you into his own kingdom and glory.

¹³ And for this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when ye received from us ^[m]the word of the message, even the word of God, ye accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also worketh in you that believe. ¹⁴ For ye, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judaea in Christ Jesus: for ye also suffered the same things of your own countrymen, even as they did of the Jews; ¹⁵ who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove out us, and please not God, and are contrary to all men; ¹⁶ forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved; to fill up their sins always: but the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.

¹⁷ But we, brethren, being bereaved of you for ^[n]a short season, in presence not in heart, endeavored the more exceedingly to see your face with great desire: ¹⁸ because we would fain have come unto you, I Paul once and again; and Satan hindered us. ¹⁹ For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of glorying? Are not even ye, before our Lord Jesus at his ^[o]coming? ²⁰ For ye are our glory and our joy.

3 Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left behind at Athens alone; ² and sent Timothy, our brother and ^[p]God’s minister in the ^[q]gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith; ³ that no man be moved by these afflictions; for yourselves know that hereunto we are appointed. ⁴ For verily, when we were with you, we told you ^[r]beforehand that we are to suffer affliction; even as it came to pass, and ye know. ⁵ For this cause I also, when I could no longer forbear, sent that I might know your faith, lest by any means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor should be in vain. ⁶ But when Timothy came even now unto us from you, and brought us glad tidings of your faith and love, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, longing to see us, even as we also to see you; ⁷ for this cause, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our distress and affliction through your faith: ⁸ for now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord. ⁹ For what thanksgiving can we render again unto God for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God; ¹⁰ night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face, and may perfect that which is lacking in your faith?

¹¹ Now may ^[s]our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way unto you: ¹² and the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we also do toward you; ¹³ to the end he may establish your hearts unblamable in holiness before ^[t]our God and Father, at the ^[u]coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. ^[v]

4 Finally then, brethren, we beseech and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that, as ye received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, even as ye do walk,—that ye abound more and more. ² For ye know what ^[w]charge we gave you through the Lord Jesus. ³ For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye abstain from fornication; ⁴ that each one of you know how to possess himself of his own vessel in sanctification and honor, ⁵ not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who know not God; ⁶ that no man ^[x]transgress, and wrong his brother in the matter: because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we ^[y]forewarned you and testified. ⁷ For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification. ⁸ Therefore he that rejecteth, rejecteth not man, but God, who giveth his Holy Spirit unto you.

⁹ But concerning love of the brethren ye have no need that one write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another; ¹⁰ for indeed ye do it toward all the brethren that are in all Macedonia. But we exhort you, brethren, that ye abound more and more; ¹¹ and that ye ^[z]study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your hands, even as we charged you; ¹² that ye may walk becomingly toward them that are without, and may have need of nothing.

¹³ But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning them that fall asleep; that ye sorrow not, even as the rest, who have no hope. ¹⁴ For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also that are fallen asleep ^[aa]in Jesus will God bring with him. ¹⁵ For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we that are alive, that are left unto the ^[ab]coming of the Lord, shall in no wise precede them that are fallen asleep. ¹⁶ For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven, with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first; ¹⁷ then we that are alive, that are left, shall together with them be caught up in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. ¹⁸ Wherefore ^[ac]comfort one another with these words.

5 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that aught be written unto you. ² For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. ³ When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall in no wise escape. ⁴ But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you ^[ad]as a thief: ⁵ for ye are all sons of light, and sons of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness; ⁶ so then let us not sleep, as do the rest, but let us watch and be sober. ⁷ For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that are drunken are drunken in the night. ⁸ But let us, since we are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation. ⁹ For God appointed us not unto wrath, but unto the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, ¹⁰ who died for us, that, whether we ^[ae]wake or sleep, we should live together with him. ¹¹ Wherefore ^[af]exhort one another, and build each other up, even as also ye do.

¹² But we beseech you, brethren, to know them that labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; ¹³ and to esteem them exceeding highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves. ¹⁴ And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the disorderly, encourage the faint-hearted, support the weak, be longsuffering toward all. ¹⁵ See that none render unto any one evil for evil; but always follow after that which is good, one toward another, and toward all. ¹⁶ Rejoice always; ¹⁷ pray without ceasing; ¹⁸ in everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus to you-ward. ¹⁹ Quench not the Spirit; ²⁰ despise not prophesyings; ^21 [ag]prove all things; hold fast that which is good; ²² abstain from every form of evil.

²³ And the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved entire, without blame at the ^[ah]coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. ²⁴ Faithful is he that calleth you, who will also do it.

²⁵ Brethren, pray for us^[ai].

²⁶ Salute all the brethren with a holy kiss. ²⁷ I adjure you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the ^[aj]brethren.

³ We are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, even as it is meet, for that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the love of each one of you all toward one another aboundeth; ⁴ so that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your ^[ak]patience and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions which ye endure; ⁵ which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God; to the end that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer: ⁶ if so be that it is a righteous thing with God to recompense affliction to them that afflict you, ⁷ and to you that are afflicted rest with us, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with the angels of his power in flaming fire, ⁸ rendering vengeance to them that know not God, and to them that obey not the ^[al]gospel of our Lord Jesus: ⁹ who shall suffer punishment, even eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might, ¹⁰ when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be marvelled at in all them that believed (because our testimony unto you was believed) in that day. ¹¹ To which end we also pray always for you, that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfil every ^[am]desire of goodness and every work of faith, with power; ¹² that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Now we beseech you, brethren, ^[an]touching the ^[ao]coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together unto him; ² to the end that ye be not quickly shaken from your mind, nor yet be troubled, either by spirit, or by word, or by epistle as from us, as that the day of the Lord is just at hand; ³ let no man beguile you in any wise: for it will not be, except the falling away come first, and the man of ^[ap]sin be revealed, the son of perdition, ⁴ he that opposeth and exalteth himself against all that is called God or ^[aq]that is worshipped; so that he sitteth in the ^[ar]temple of God, setting himself forth as God. ⁵ Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? ⁶ And now ye know that which restraineth, to the end that he may be revealed in his own season. ⁷ For the mystery of lawlessness doth already work: ^[as]only there is one that restraineth now, until he be taken out of the way. ⁸ And then shall be revealed the lawless one, whom the Lord ^[at]Jesus shall ^[au]slay with the breath of his mouth, and bring to nought by the manifestation of his ^[av]coming; ⁹ even he, whose ^[aw]coming is according to the working of Satan with all ^[ax]power and signs and lying wonders, ¹⁰ and with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that ^[ay]perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. ¹¹ And for this cause God sendeth them a working of error, that they should believe a lie: ¹² that they all might be judged who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

¹³ But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, for that God chose you ^[az]from the beginning unto salvation in sanctification of the Spirit and ^[ba]belief of the truth: ¹⁴ whereunto he called you through our ^[bb]gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. ¹⁵ So then, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye were taught, whether by word, or by epistle of ours.

¹⁶ Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, ¹⁷ comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

3 Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run and be glorified, even as also it is with you; ² and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and evil men; for all have not faith. ³ But the Lord is faithful, who shall establish you, and guard you from ^[bc]the evil one. ⁴ And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command. ⁵ And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the ^[bd]patience of Christ.

⁶ Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which ^[be]they received of us. ⁷ For yourselves know how ye ought to imitate us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you; ⁸ neither did we eat bread for nought at any man’s hand, but in labor and travail, working night and day, that we might not burden any of you: ⁹ not because we have not the right, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you, that ye should imitate us. ¹⁰ For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, If any will not work, neither let him eat. ¹¹ For we hear of some that walk among you disorderly, that work not at all, but are busybodies. ¹² Now them that are such we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. ¹³ But ye, brethren, be not weary in well-doing. ¹⁴ And if any man obeyeth not our word by this epistle, note that man, that ye have no company with him, to the end that he may be ashamed. ¹⁵ And yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

¹⁶ Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways. The Lord be with you all.

¹⁷ The salutation of me Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write. ¹⁸ The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Saviour, and Christ Jesus our hope; ² unto Timothy, my true child in faith: Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

³ As I exhorted thee to tarry at Ephesus, when I was going into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge certain men not to teach a different doctrine, ⁴ neither to give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questionings, rather than a ^[bf]dispensation of God which is in faith; so do I now. ⁵ But the end of the charge is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and faith unfeigned: ⁶ from which things some having ^[bg]swerved have turned aside unto vain talking; ⁷ desiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say, nor whereof they confidently affirm. ⁸ But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully, ⁹ as knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and unruly, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for ^[bh]murderers of fathers and ^[bi]murderers of mothers, for manslayers, ¹⁰ for fornicators, for abusers of themselves with men, for menstealers, for liars, for false swearers, and if there be any other thing contrary to the ^[bj]sound ^[bk]doctrine; ¹¹ according to the ^[bl]gospel of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

¹² I thank him that ^[bm]enabled me, even Christ Jesus our Lord, for that he counted me faithful, appointing me to his service; ¹³ though I was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: howbeit I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief; ¹⁴ and the grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief: ¹⁶ howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me as chief might Jesus Christ show forth all his longsuffering, for an ensample of them that should thereafter believe on him unto eternal life. ¹⁷ Now unto the King ^[bn]eternal, ^[bo]immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory ^[bp]for ever and ever. Amen.

¹⁸ This charge I commit unto thee, my child Timothy, according to the prophecies which led the way to thee, that by them thou mayest war the good warfare; ¹⁹ holding faith and a good conscience; which some having thrust from them made shipwreck concerning the faith: ²⁰ of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I delivered unto Satan, that they might be taught not to blaspheme.

2 I exhort therefore, first of all, ^[bq]that supplications, prayers, intercessions, thanksgivings, be made for all men; ² for kings and all that are in high place; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and gravity. ³ This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; ⁴ who would have all men to be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth. ⁵ For there is one God, one mediator also between God and men, himself man, Christ Jesus, ⁶ who gave himself a ransom for all; the testimony to be borne in its own times; ⁷ whereunto I was appointed a ^[br]preacher and an apostle (I speak the truth, I lie not), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

⁸ I desire therefore that the men pray in every place, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and ^[bs]disputing. ⁹ In like manner, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefastness and sobriety; not with braided hair, and gold or pearls or costly raiment; ¹⁰ but (which becometh women professing godliness) through good works. ¹¹ Let a woman learn in quietness with all subjection. ¹² But I permit not a woman to teach, nor to have dominion over a man, but to be in quietness. ¹³ For Adam was first formed, then Eve; ¹⁴ and Adam was not beguiled, but the woman being beguiled hath fallen into transgression: ¹⁵ but she shall be saved through ^[bt]her child-bearing, if they continue in faith and love and sanctification with sobriety.

3 ^[bu]Faithful is the saying, If a man seeketh the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. ² The ^[bv]bishop therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, orderly, given to hospitality, apt to teach; ^3 [bw]no brawler, no striker; but gentle, not contentious, no lover of money; ⁴ one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; ⁵ (but if a man knoweth not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) ⁶ not a novice, lest being puffed up he fall into the ^[bx]condemnation of the devil. ⁷ Moreover he must have good testimony from them that are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. ⁸ Deacons in like manner must be grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; ⁹ holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. ¹⁰ And let these also first be proved; then let them serve as deacons, if they be blameless. ¹¹ Women in like manner must be grave, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. ¹² Let deacons be husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. ¹³ For they that have served well as deacons gain to themselves a good standing, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

¹⁴ These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly; ¹⁵ but if I tarry long, that thou mayest know ^[by]how men ought to behave themselves in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ^[bz]ground of the truth. ¹⁶ And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness;

4 But the Spirit saith expressly, that in later times some shall fall away from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons, ² through the hypocrisy of men that speak lies, ^[cc]branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron; ³ forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by them that believe and know the truth. ⁴ For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it be received with thanksgiving: ⁵ for it is sanctified through the word of God and prayer.

⁶ If thou put the brethren in mind of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished in the words of the faith, and of the good doctrine which thou hast followed until now: ⁷ but refuse profane and old wives’ fables. And exercise thyself unto godliness: ⁸ for bodily exercise is profitable ^[cd]for a little; but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life which now is, and of that which is to come. ⁹ Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation. ¹⁰ For to this end we labor and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of them that believe. ¹¹ These things command and teach. ¹² Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an ensample to them that believe, in word, in manner of life, in love, in faith, in purity. ¹³ Till I come, give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching. ¹⁴ Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. ¹⁵ Be diligent in these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy progress may be manifest unto all. ¹⁶ Take heed to thyself, and to thy teaching. Continue in these things; for in doing this thou shalt save both thyself and them that hear thee.

5 Rebuke not an elder, but exhort him as a father; the younger men as brethren: ² the elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, in all purity. ³ Honor widows that are widows indeed. ⁴ But if any widow hath children or grandchildren, let them learn first to show piety towards their own family, and to requite their parents: for this is acceptable in the sight of God. ⁵ Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, hath her hope set on God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day. ⁶ But she that giveth herself to pleasure is dead while she liveth. ⁷ These things also command, that they may be without reproach. ⁸ But if any provideth not for his own, and specially his own household, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever. ⁹ Let none be enrolled as a widow under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man, ¹⁰ well reported of for good works; if she hath brought up children, if she hath used hospitality to strangers, if she hath washed the saints’ feet, if she hath relieved the afflicted, if she hath diligently followed every good work. ¹¹ But younger widows refuse: for when they have waxed wanton against Christ, they desire to marry; ¹² having condemnation, because they have rejected their first ^[ce]pledge. ¹³ And withal they learn also to be idle, going about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. ¹⁴ I desire therefore that the younger ^[cf]widows marry, bear children, rule the household, give no occasion to the adversary for reviling: ¹⁵ for already some are turned aside after Satan. ¹⁶ If any woman that believeth hath widows, let her relieve them, and let not the church be burdened; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.

¹⁷ Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and in teaching. ¹⁸ For the scripture saith, ^[cg]Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn. And, The laborer is worthy of his hire. ¹⁹ Against an elder receive not an accusation, except at the mouth of two or three witnesses. ²⁰ Them that sin reprove in the sight of all, that the rest also may be in fear. ²¹ I charge thee in the sight of God, and Christ Jesus, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without ^[ch]prejudice, doing nothing by partiality. ²² Lay hands hastily on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure. ²³ Be no longer a drinker of water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities. ²⁴ Some men’s sins are evident, going before unto judgment; and some men also they follow after. ²⁵ In like manner also ^[ci]there are good works that are evident; and such as are otherwise cannot be hid.

6 Let as many as are ^[cj]servants under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, that the name of God and the doctrine be not blasphemed. ² And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but let them serve them the rather, because they that ^[ck]partake of the benefit are believing and beloved. These things teach and exhort.

³ If any man teacheth a different doctrine, and consenteth not to ^[cl]sound words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; ⁴ he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but ^[cm]doting about questionings and disputes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, ⁵ wranglings of men corrupted in mind and bereft of the truth, supposing that godliness is a way of gain. ⁶ But godliness with contentment is great gain: ⁷ for we brought nothing into the world, for neither can we carry anything out; ⁸ but having food and covering ^[cn]we shall be therewith content. ⁹ But they that are minded to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts, such as drown men in destruction and perdition. ¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all ^[co]kinds of evil: which some reaching after have been led astray from the faith, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

¹¹ But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, ^[cp]patience, meekness. ¹² Fight the good fight of the faith, lay hold on the life eternal, whereunto thou wast called, and didst confess the good confession in the sight of many witnesses. ¹³ I charge thee in the sight of God, who ^[cq]giveth life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed the good confession; ¹⁴ that thou keep the commandment, without spot, without reproach, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: ¹⁵ which in ^[cr]its own times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of ^[cs]kings, and Lord of ^[ct]lords; ¹⁶ who only hath immortality, dwelling in light unapproachable; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honor and power eternal. ¹⁷ Charge them that are rich in this present ^[cu]world, that they be not highminded, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; ¹⁸ that they do good, that they be rich in good works, that they be ready to distribute, ^[cv]willing to communicate; ¹⁹ laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on the life which is life indeed.

²⁰ O Timothy, guard ^[cw]that which is committed unto thee, turning away from the profane babblings and oppositions of the knowledge which is falsely so called; ²¹ which some professing have ^[cx]erred concerning the faith.

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, according to the promise of the life which is in Christ Jesus, ² to Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

³ I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers in a pure conscience, how unceasing is my remembrance of thee in my supplications, night and day ⁴ longing to see thee, remembering thy tears, that I may be filled with ^[cy]joy; ⁵ having been reminded of the unfeigned faith that is in thee; which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and, I am persuaded, in thee also. ⁶ For which cause I put thee in remembrance that thou ^[cz]stir up the gift of God, which is in thee through the laying on of my hands. ⁷ For God gave us not a spirit of fearfulness; but of power and love and ^[da]discipline. ⁸ Be not ashamed therefore of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but suffer hardship with the ^[db]gospel according to the power of God; ⁹ who saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus ^[dc]before times eternal, ¹⁰ but hath now been manifested by the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death, and brought life and ^[dd]immortality to light through the ^[de]gospel, ¹¹ whereunto I was appointed a ^[df]preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher. ¹² For which cause I suffer also these things: yet I am not ashamed; for I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard ^[dg]that which I have committed unto him against that day. ¹³ Hold the pattern of ^[dh]sound words which thou hast heard from me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. ^14 [di]That good thing which was committed unto thee guard through the Holy Spirit which dwelleth in us.

¹⁵ This thou knowest, that all that are in Asia turned away from me; of whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. ¹⁶ The Lord grant mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus: for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; ¹⁷ but, when he was in Rome, he sought me diligently, and found me ¹⁸ (the Lord grant unto him to find mercy of the Lord in that day); and in how many things he ministered at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

2 Thou therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. ² And the things which thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. ^3 [dj]Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. ⁴ No soldier on service entangleth himself in the affairs of this life; that he may please him who enrolled him as a soldier. ⁵ And if also a man contend in the games, he is not crowned, except he have contended lawfully. ⁶ The husbandman that laboreth must be the first to partake of the fruits. ⁷ Consider what I say; for the Lord shall give thee understanding in all things. ⁸ Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my ^[dk]gospel: ⁹ wherein I suffer hardship unto bonds, as a malefactor; but the word of God is not bound. ¹⁰ Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sake, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. ¹¹ Faithful is the ^[dl]saying: For if we died with him, we shall also live with him: ¹² if we endure, we shall also reign with him: if we shall deny him, he also will deny us: ¹³ if we are faithless, he abideth faithful; for he cannot deny himself.

¹⁴ Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them in the sight of ^[dm]the Lord, that they strive not about words, to no profit, to the subverting of them that hear. ¹⁵ Give diligence to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, ^[dn]handling aright the word of truth. ¹⁶ But shun profane babblings: for they will proceed further in ungodliness, ¹⁷ and their word will ^[do]eat as doth a gangrene: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; ¹⁸ men who concerning the truth have ^[dp]erred, saying that ^[dq]the resurrection is past already, and overthrow the faith of some. ¹⁹ Howbeit the firm foundation of God standeth, having this seal, ^[dr]The Lord knoweth them that are his: and, ^[ds]Let every one that nameth the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness. ²⁰ Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some unto honor, and some unto dishonor. ²¹ If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, meet for the master’s use, prepared unto every good work. ²² But flee youthful lusts, and follow after righteousness, faith, love, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. ²³ But foolish and ignorant questionings refuse, knowing that they gender strifes. ²⁴ And the Lord’s ^[dt]servant must not strive, but be gentle towards all, apt to teach, forbearing, ²⁵ in meekness ^[du]correcting them that oppose themselves; if peradventure God may give them repentance unto the knowledge of the truth, ²⁶ and they may ^[dv]recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, having been ^[dw]taken captive ^[dx]by him unto his will.

3 But know this, that in the last days grievous times shall come. ² For men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, railers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, ³ without natural affection, implacable, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, no lovers of good, ⁴ traitors, headstrong, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; ⁵ holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power thereof: from these also turn away. ⁶ For of these are they that creep into houses, and take captive silly women laden with sins, led away by divers lusts, ⁷ ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. ⁸ And even as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also withstand the truth; men corrupted in mind, reprobate concerning the faith. ⁹ But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be evident unto all men, as theirs also came to be. ¹⁰ But thou didst follow my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, ^[dy]patience, ¹¹ persecutions, sufferings; what things befell me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: and out of them all the Lord delivered me. ¹² Yea, and all that would live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. ¹³ But evil men and impostors shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. ¹⁴ But abide thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of ^[dz]whom thou hast learned them; ¹⁵ and that from a babe thou hast known the sacred writings which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. ^16 [ea]Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for ^[eb]instruction which is in righteousness: ¹⁷ that the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.

4 ^[ec]I charge thee in the sight of God, and of Christ Jesus, who shall judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: ² preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; ^[ed]reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. ³ For the time will come when they will not endure the ^[ee]sound ^[ef]doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts; ⁴ and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside unto fables. ⁵ But be thou sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil thy ministry. ⁶ For I am already being ^[eg]offered, and the time of my departure is come. ⁷ I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith: ⁸ henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to me at that day; and not to me only, but also to all them that have loved his appearing.

⁹ Give diligence to come shortly unto me: ¹⁰ for Demas forsook me, having loved this present ^[eh]world, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to ^[ei]Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. ¹¹ Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee; for he is useful to me for ministering. ¹² But Tychicus I sent to Ephesus. ¹³ The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, bring when thou comest, and the books, especially the parchments. ¹⁴ Alexander the coppersmith ^[ej]did me much evil: the Lord will render to him according to his works: ¹⁵ of whom do thou also beware; for he greatly withstood our words. ¹⁶ At my first defence no one took my part, but all forsook me: may it not be laid to their account. ¹⁷ But the Lord stood by me, and ^[ek]strengthened me; that through me the ^[el]message might be fully proclaimed, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. ¹⁸ The Lord will deliver me from every evil work, and will save me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be the glory ^[em]for ever and ever. 1 Paul, a ^[en]servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, ² in hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised ^[eo]before times eternal; ³ but in ^[ep]his own seasons manifested his word in the ^[eq]message, wherewith I was intrusted according to the commandment of God our Saviour; ⁴ to Titus, my true child after a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour.

⁵ For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that were wanting, and appoint elders in every city, as I gave thee charge; ⁶ if any man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children that believe, who are not accused of riot or unruly. ⁷ For the ^[er]bishop must be blameless, as God’s steward; not self-willed, not soon angry, ^[es]no brawler, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; ⁸ but given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled; ⁹ holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able both to exhort in the ^[et]sound ^[eu]doctrine, and to convict the gainsayers.

¹⁰ For there are many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision, ¹¹ whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake. ¹² One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said,

¹³ This testimony is true. For which cause reprove them sharply, that they may be ^[ew]sound in the faith, ¹⁴ not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men who turn away from the truth. ¹⁵ To the pure all things are pure: but to them that are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled. ¹⁶ They profess that they know God; but by their works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

2 But speak thou the things which befit the ^[ex]sound ^[ey]doctrine: ² that aged men be temperate, grave, sober-minded, ^[ez]sound in faith, in love, in ^[fa]patience: ³ that aged women likewise be reverent in demeanor, not slanderers nor enslaved to much wine, teachers of that which is good; ⁴ that they may train the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, ⁵ to be sober-minded, chaste, workers at home, kind, being in subjection to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed: ⁶ the younger men likewise exhort to be sober-minded: ⁷ in all things showing thyself an ensample of good works; in thy doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, ⁸ sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of us. ⁹ Exhort ^[fb]servants to be in subjection to their own masters, and to be well-pleasing to them in all things; not gainsaying; ¹⁰ not purloining, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. ¹¹ For the grace of God ^[fc]hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men, ¹² instructing us, to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly and righteously and godly in this present ^[fd]world; ¹³ looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory ^[fe]of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; ¹⁴ who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a people for his own possession, zealous of good works.

¹⁵ These things speak and exhort and reprove with all ^[ff]authority. Let no man despise thee.

3 Put them in mind to be in subjection to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready unto every good work, ² to speak evil of no man, not to be contentious, to be gentle, showing all meekness toward all men. ³ For we also once were foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. ⁴ But when the kindness of God our Saviour, and his love toward man, appeared, ⁵ not by works done in righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy he saved us, through the ^[fg]washing of regeneration ^[fh]and renewing of the Holy Spirit, ⁶ which he poured out upon us richly, through Jesus Christ our Saviour; ⁷ that, being justified by his grace, we might be made ^[fi]heirs according to the hope of eternal life. ⁸ Faithful is the saying, and concerning these things I desire that thou affirm confidently, to the end that they who have believed God may be careful to ^[fj]maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men: ⁹ but shun foolish questionings, and genealogies, and strifes, and fightings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. ¹⁰ A factious man after a first and second admonition ^[fk]refuse; ¹¹ knowing that such a one is perverted, and sinneth, being self-condemned.

¹² When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, give diligence to come unto me to Nicopolis: for there I have determined to winter. ¹³ Set forward Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them. ¹⁴ And let our people also learn to ^[fl]maintain good works for necessary ^[fm]uses, that they be not unfruitful.

¹⁵ All that are with me salute thee. Salute them that love us in faith.

⁴ I thank my God always, making mention of thee in my prayers, ⁵ hearing of ^[fp]thy love, and of the faith which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all the saints; ⁶ that the fellowship of thy faith may become effectual, in the knowledge of every good thing which is in ^[fq]you, unto Christ. ⁷ For I had much joy and comfort in thy love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through thee, brother.

⁸ Wherefore, though I have all boldness in Christ to enjoin thee that which is befitting, ⁹ yet for love’s sake I rather beseech, being such a one as Paul ^[fr]the aged, and now a prisoner also of Christ Jesus: ¹⁰ I beseech thee for my child, whom I have begotten in my bonds, ^[fs]Onesimus, ¹¹ who once was unprofitable to thee, but now is profitable to thee and to me: ¹² whom I have sent back to thee in his own person, that is, my very heart: ¹³ whom I would fain have kept with me, that in thy behalf he might minister unto me in the bonds of the ^[ft]gospel: ¹⁴ but without thy mind I would do nothing; that thy goodness should not be as of necessity, but of free will. ¹⁵ For perhaps he was therefore parted from thee for a season, that thou shouldest have him for ever; ¹⁶ no longer as a ^[fu]servant, but more than a ^[fv]servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much rather to thee, both in the flesh and in the Lord. ¹⁷ If then thou countest me a partner, receive him as myself. ¹⁸ But if he hath wronged thee at all, or oweth thee aught, put that to mine account; ¹⁹ I Paul write it with mine own hand, I will repay it: that I say not unto thee that thou owest to me even thine own self besides. ²⁰ Yea, brother, let me have ^[fw]joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my heart in Christ.

²¹ Having confidence in thine obedience I write unto thee, knowing that thou wilt do even beyond what I say. ²² But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I hope that through your prayers I shall be granted unto you.

²³ Epaphras, my fellow-prisoner in Christ Jesus, saluteth thee; ²⁴ and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow-workers.
