Psalm 109[a]
Prayer of a Person Falsely Accused
1 For the leader. A psalm of David.
I
2 O God, whom I praise, do not be silent,(A)
for wicked and treacherous mouths attack me.
They speak against me with lying tongues;
3 with hateful words they surround me,
attacking me without cause.
4 In return for my love they slander me,
even though I prayed for them.
5 They repay me evil for good,
hatred for my love.(B)
II
6 Appoint an evil one over him,
an accuser[b] to stand at his right hand,
7 That he may be judged and found guilty,
that his plea may be in vain.
8 May his days be few;
may another take his office.(C)
9 May his children be fatherless,
his wife, a widow.(D)
10 May his children wander and beg,
driven from their hovels.
11 May the usurer snare all he owns,
strangers plunder all he earns.
12 May no one treat him with mercy
or pity his fatherless children.
13 May his posterity be destroyed,(E)
their name rooted out in the next generation.
14 May his fathers’ guilt be mentioned to the Lord;
his mother’s sin not rooted out.(F)
15 May their guilt be always before the Lord,(G)
till their memory is banished from the earth,(H)
16 For he did not remember to show mercy,
but hounded the wretched poor
and brought death to the brokenhearted.
17 He loved cursing; may it come upon him;
he hated blessing; may none come to him.
18 May cursing clothe him like a robe;
may it enter his belly like water,
his bones like oil.
19 May it be near as the clothes he wears,
as the belt always around him.
20 [c]May this be the reward for my accusers from the Lord,
for those speaking evil against me.
III
21 But you, Lord, are my Lord,
deal kindly with me for your name’s sake;
in your great mercy rescue me.
22 For I am poor and needy;
my heart is pierced within me.
23 Like a lengthening shadow I am gone,
I am shaken off like the locust.
24 My knees totter from fasting;(I)
my flesh has wasted away.
25 I have become a mockery to them;
when they see me, they shake their heads.
26 Help me, Lord, my God;
save me in your mercy.
27 Make them know this is your hand,
that you, Lord, have done this.
28 Though they curse, may you bless;
arise, shame them, that your servant may rejoice.
29 Clothe my accusers with disgrace;
make them wear their shame like a mantle.
30 I will give fervent thanks to the Lord;
before a crowd I will praise him.(J)
31 For he stands at the right hand of the poor
to save him from those who pass judgment on him.
Psalm 110[d]
God Appoints the King both King and Priest
1 A psalm of David.
The Lord says to my lord:[e]
“Sit at my right hand,
while I make your enemies your footstool.”(K)
2 The scepter of your might:
the Lord extends your strong scepter from Zion.
Have dominion over your enemies!
3 Yours is princely power from the day of your birth.
In holy splendor before the daystar,
like dew I begot you.(L)
4 The Lord has sworn and will not waver:
“You are a priest forever in the manner of Melchizedek.”[f](M)
5 At your right hand is the Lord,
who crushes kings on the day of his wrath,(N)
6 Who judges nations, heaps up corpses,
crushes heads across the wide earth,
7 [g]Who drinks from the brook by the wayside
and thus holds high his head.(O)

6 For he shall never be shaken;
the righteous shall be remembered forever.(U)
7 He shall not fear an ill report;
his heart is steadfast, trusting the Lord.
8 His heart is tranquil, without fear,
till at last he looks down on his foes.
9 Lavishly he gives to the poor;
his righteousness shall endure forever;(V)
his horn[n] shall be exalted in honor.
10 The wicked sees and is angry;
gnashes his teeth and wastes away;
the desire of the wicked come to nothing.

II
4 High above all nations is the Lord;
above the heavens his glory.(Y)
5 Who is like the Lord our God,
enthroned on high,
6 (Z)looking down on heaven and earth?
7 He raises the needy from the dust,
lifts the poor from the ash heap,(AA)
8 Seats them with princes,
the princes of the people,
9 Gives the childless wife a home,
the joyful mother of children.(AB)
Hallelujah!

3 [q]The sea saw and fled;
the Jordan turned back.(AD)
4 The mountains skipped like rams;
the hills, like lambs.(AE)
5 Why was it, sea, that you fled?
Jordan, that you turned back?
6 Mountains, that you skipped like rams?
You hills, like lambs?
7 Tremble, earth, before the Lord,(AF)
before the God of Jacob,
8 [r]Who turned the rock into pools of water,
flint into a flowing spring.(AG)

Thanksgiving to God Who Saves from Death
I

to my voice in supplication,
2 Who turned an ear to me
on the day I called.
3 I was caught by the cords of death;[y](AQ)
the snares of Sheol had seized me;
I felt agony and dread.
4 Then I called on the name of the Lord,
“O Lord, save my life!”
II
5 Gracious is the Lord and righteous;

13 I will raise the cup of salvation[ab]

7 The Lord is with me as my helper;
I shall look in triumph on my foes.
8 Better to take refuge in the Lord(BF)

in the Lord’s name I cut them off.

in the Lord’s name I cut them off.

nor the moon by night.(CU)
7 The Lord will guard you from all evil;
he will guard your soul.(CV)
8 The Lord will guard your coming and going
both now and forever.(CW)
Psalm 122[au]
A Pilgrim’s Prayer for Jerusalem
1 A song of ascents. Of David.
I
I rejoiced when they said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”(CX)
2 And now our feet are standing
within your gates, Jerusalem.
3 Jerusalem, built as a city,
walled round about.[av](CY)
4 There the tribes go up,
the tribes of the Lord,
As it was decreed for Israel,
to give thanks to the name of the Lord.(CZ)
5 There are the thrones of justice,
the thrones of the house of David.
II
6 For the peace of Jerusalem pray:
“May those who love you prosper!
7 May peace be within your ramparts,
prosperity within your towers.”(DA)
8 For the sake of my brothers and friends I say,
“Peace be with you.”(DB)
9 For the sake of the house of the Lord, our God,
I pray for your good.
Psalm 123[aw]
Reliance on the Lord
1 A song of ascents.
To you I raise my eyes,
to you enthroned in heaven.(DC)
2 Yes, like the eyes of servants
on the hand of their masters,
Like the eyes of a maid
on the hand of her mistress,
So our eyes are on the Lord our God,
till we are shown favor.
3 Show us favor, Lord, show us favor,
for we have our fill of contempt.(DD)
4 Our souls are more than sated
with mockery from the insolent,
with contempt from the arrogant.
Psalm 124[ax]
God, the Rescuer of the People
1 A song of ascents. Of David.
Had not the Lord been with us,
let Israel say,(DE)
2 Had not the Lord been with us,
when people rose against us,
3 Then they would have swallowed us alive,(DF)
for their fury blazed against us.
4 Then the waters would have engulfed us,
the torrent overwhelmed us;(DG)
5 then seething water would have drowned us.
6 Blessed is the Lord, who did not leave us
to be torn by their teeth.
7 We escaped with our lives like a bird
from the fowler’s snare;
the snare was broken,
and we escaped.
8 [ay]Our help is in the name of the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.(DH)
Psalm 125[az]
Israel’s Protector
1 A song of ascents.
Those trusting in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
unshakable, forever enduring.(DI)
2 As mountains surround Jerusalem,
the Lord surrounds his people
both now and forever.(DJ)
3 The scepter of the wicked will not prevail
in the land allotted to the just,[ba]
Lest the just themselves
turn their hands to evil.
4 Do good, Lord, to the good,
to those who are upright of heart.(DK)
5 But those who turn aside to crooked ways
may the Lord send down with the evildoers.(DL)
Peace upon Israel!(DM)
Psalm 126[bb]
The Reversal of Zion’s Fortunes
1 A song of ascents.
I
When the Lord restored the captives of Zion,(DN)
we thought we were dreaming.
2 Then our mouths were filled with laughter;
our tongues sang for joy.(DO)
Then it was said among the nations,
“The Lord had done great things for them.”
3 The Lord has done great things for us;
Oh, how happy we were!
4 Restore our captives, Lord,
like the dry stream beds of the Negeb.[bc]
II
5 Those who sow in tears
will reap with cries of joy.(DP)
6 Those who go forth weeping,
carrying sacks of seed,
Will return with cries of joy,
carrying their bundled sheaves.
Psalm 127[bd]
The Need of God’s Blessing
1 A song of ascents. Of Solomon.
I
Unless the Lord build the house,
they labor in vain who build.
Unless the Lord guard the city,
in vain does the guard keep watch.
2 It is vain for you to rise early
and put off your rest at night,
To eat bread earned by hard toil—
all this God gives to his beloved in sleep.(DQ)
II
3 Certainly sons are a gift from the Lord,
the fruit of the womb, a reward.(DR)
4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the sons born in one’s youth.
5 Blessed is the man who has filled his quiver with them.
He will never be shamed
for he will destroy his foes at the gate.[be]
Psalm 128[bf]
The Blessed Home of the Just
1 A song of ascents.
I
Blessed are all who fear the Lord,
and who walk in his ways.(DS)
2 What your hands provide you will enjoy;
you will be blessed and prosper:(DT)
3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within your home,
Your children like young olive plants
around your table.(DU)
4 Just so will the man be blessed
who fears the Lord.
II
5 May the Lord bless you from Zion;
may you see Jerusalem’s prosperity
all the days of your life,(DV)
6 and live to see your children’s children.(DW)
Peace upon Israel!(DX)
Psalm 129[bg]
Against Israel’s Enemies
1 A song of ascents.
I
Viciously have they attacked me from my youth,
let Israel say now.(DY)
2 Viciously have they attacked me from my youth,(DZ)
yet they have not prevailed against me.
3 Upon my back the plowers plowed,
as they traced their long furrows.(EA)
4 But the just Lord cut me free
from the ropes of the wicked.[bh]
II
5 May they recoil in disgrace,
all who hate Zion.
6 May they be like grass on the rooftops[bi]
withered in early growth,(EB)
7 Never to fill the reaper’s hands,
nor the arms of the binders of sheaves,
8 And with none passing by to call out:
“The blessing of the Lord be upon you![bj]
We bless you in the name of the Lord!”(EC)
Psalm 130[bk]
Prayer for Pardon and Mercy
1 A song of ascents.
I
Out of the depths[bl] I call to you, Lord;
2 Lord, hear my cry!
May your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.(ED)
3 If you, Lord, keep account of sins,
Lord, who can stand?(EE)
4 But with you is forgiveness
and so you are revered.[bm]
II
5 I wait for the Lord,
my soul waits
and I hope for his word.(EF)
6 My soul looks for the Lord
more than sentinels for daybreak.(EG)
More than sentinels for daybreak,
7 let Israel hope in the Lord,
For with the Lord is mercy,
with him is plenteous redemption,(EH)
8 And he will redeem Israel
from all its sins.(EI)
Psalm 131[bn]
Humble Trust in God
1 A song of ascents. Of David.
Lord, my heart is not proud;
nor are my eyes haughty.
I do not busy myself with great matters,
with things too sublime for me.(EJ)
2 Rather, I have stilled my soul,
Like a weaned child to its mother,
weaned is my soul.(EK)
3 Israel, hope in the Lord,
now and forever.
Psalm 132[bo]
The Covenant Between David and God
1 A song of ascents.
I
Remember, O Lord, for David
all his hardships;
2 How he swore an oath to the Lord,
vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:[bp]
3 “I will not enter the house where I live,(EL)
nor lie on the couch where I sleep;
4 I will give my eyes no sleep,
my eyelids no rest,
5 Till I find a place for the Lord,
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
6 “We have heard of it in Ephrathah;[bq]
we have found it in the fields of Jaar.
7 Let us enter his dwelling;
let us worship at his footstool.”(EM)
8 “Arise, Lord, come to your resting place,(EN)
you and your mighty ark.
9 Your priests will be clothed with justice;
your devout will shout for joy.”
10 For the sake of David your servant,
do not reject your anointed.
II
11 The Lord swore an oath to David in truth,
he will never turn back from it:(EO)
“Your own offspring(EP) I will set upon your throne.
12 If your sons observe my covenant,
and my decrees I shall teach them,
Their sons, in turn,
shall sit forever on your throne.”
13 Yes, the Lord has chosen Zion,
desired it for a dwelling:
14 “This is my resting place forever;
here I will dwell, for I desire it.
15 I will bless Zion with provisions;
its poor I will fill with bread.
16 I will clothe its priests with salvation;
its devout shall shout for joy.(EQ)
17 There I will make a horn sprout for David;[br](ER)
I will set a lamp for my anointed.
18 His foes I will clothe with shame,
but on him his crown shall shine.”
Psalm 133[bs]
A Vision of a Blessed Community
1 A song of ascents. Of David.
How good and how pleasant it is,
when brothers[bt] dwell together as one!
2 Like fine oil on the head,[bu](ES)
running down upon the beard,
Upon the beard of Aaron,
upon the collar of his robe.
3 Like dew[bv] of Hermon coming down
upon the mountains of Zion.(ET)
There the Lord has decreed a blessing,
life for evermore!(EU)
Psalm 134[bw]
Exhortation to the Night Watch to Bless God
1 A song of ascents.
