Zechariah 11 - Matthew 4

11 The destruction of the Temple. 4 The care of the faithful is committed to Christ. 7 A grievous vision against Jerusalem and Judah.

Open thy doors, O [a]Lebanon, and the fire shall devour thy cedars.

Howl, [b]fir trees: for the cedar is fallen, because all the mighty are destroyed: howl ye, O oaks of Bashan, for the [c]defenced forest is cut down.

There is the voice of the howling of the shepherds: for their [d]glory is destroyed: the voice of the roaring of lion’s whelps: for the pride of Jordan is destroyed.

Thus saith the Lord my God, Feed the sheep of the [e]slaughter.

They that possess them, slay them [f]and sin not: and they that sell them, say, [g]Blessed be the Lord: for I am rich, and their own shepherds spare them not.

Surely I will no more spare those that dwell in the land, saith the Lord: but lo, [h]I will deliver the men every one into his neighbor’s hand, and into the hand of his [i]king: and they shall smite the land, and out of their hands I will not deliver them.

For I fed the sheep of slaughter, even the [j]poor of the flock, and I took unto me [k]two staves: the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bands, and I fed the sheep.

[l]Three shepherds also I cut off in one month, and my soul loathed [m]them, and their soul abhorred me.

Then said I, I will not feed you: that that dieth, let it die: and that that perisheth, let it perish: and let the remnant eat, everyone the flesh of his neighbor.

10 And I took my staff, even Beauty, and brake it, that I might disannul my covenant, which I had made with all people.

11 And it was broken in that day: and so the [n]poor of the sheep that waited upon me, knew that it was the word of the Lord.

12 And I said unto them, If ye think it good, give me [o]my wages: and if no, leave off: so they weighed for my wages thirty pieces of silver.

13 And the Lord said unto me, Cast it unto the [p]potter: a goodly price, that I was valued at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the Lord.

14 Then brake I mine other staff: even the Bands, that I might dissolve the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.

15 And the Lord said unto me, Take to thee yet [q]the instruments of a foolish shepherd.

16 For lo, I will raise up a shepherd in the land, which shall not look for the thing that is lost, nor seek the tender lambs, nor heal that that is hurt, nor feed that that [r]standeth up, but he shall eat flesh of the fat, and tear their claws in pieces.

17 O idol shepherd that leaveth the flock: the sword shall be upon his [s]arm, and upon his right eye. His arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.

12 Of the destruction and building again of Jerusalem.

The burden of the word of the Lord upon [t]Israel, saith the Lord, which spread the heavens, and laid the foundation of the earth, and formed the spirit of man within him.

Behold, I will make Jerusalem a[u]cup of poison unto all the people round about: and also with Judah will he be in the siege against Jerusalem.

And in that day will I make Jerusalem an heavy stone for all people: all that lift it up, shall be torn, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.

In that day, saith the Lord, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness, and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.

And the princes of Judah shall say in their hearts, The [v]inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the Lord of hosts their God.

In that day will I make the princes of Judah like coals of fire among the wood, and like a firebrand in the sheaf, and they shall devour all the people round about on the right hand, and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem.

The Lord also shall preserve the [w]tents of Judah, as afore time: therefore the glory of the house of David shall not boast, nor the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem against Judah.

In that day shall the Lord defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and he that is feeble among them, in that day shall be as David: and the house of David shall be as God’s house, and as the Angel of the Lord before them.

And in that day will I seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of [x]grace and of compassion, and they shall look upon me, whom they have [y]pierced, and they shall lament for [z]him, as one mourneth for his only son, and be sorry for him as one is sorry for his firstborn.

11 In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the [aa]mourning of [ab]Hadad Rimmon in the valley of Megiddo.

12 And the [ac]land shall bewail every family [ad]apart, the family of the [ae]house of David apart, and their wives apart: the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart:

13 The family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart: the family of [af]Shemei apart, and their wives apart:

14 All the families that [ag]remain, every family apart, and their wives apart.

13 1 Of the fountain of grace. 2 Of the clean riddance of idolatry. 3 The zeal of the godly against false prophets.

In that day there [ah]shall be a fountain opened to the house of David, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.

And in that day, saith the Lord of hosts, I will cut off the [ai]names of the idols out of the land: and they shall no more be remembered: and I will cause the [aj]prophets, and the unclean spirit to depart out of the land.

And when any shall yet [ak]prophesy, his father and his mother that begat him, shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live: for thou speakest lies in the Name of the Lord: and his father and his mother that begat him, [al]shall thrust him through, when he prophesieth.

And in that day shall the prophets [am]be ashamed everyone of his vision, when he hath prophesied: neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive.

But he shall say, I am no [an]Prophet: I am an husbandman: for man taught me to be an herdsman from my youth up.

And one shall say unto him, What are these [ao]wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Thus was I wounded in the house of my friends.

¶ Arise, O sword, upon my [ap]shepherd, and upon the man, that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

And in all the land, saith the Lord, [aq]two parts therein shall be cut off, and die: but the third shall be left therein.

And I will bring that third part through the fire, and will fine them as the silver is fined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my Name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people, and they shall say, The Lord is my God.

14 8 Of the doctrine that shall proceed out of the Church, and of the restoration thereof.

Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be [ar]divided in the midst of thee.

For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken, and the houses spoiled, and the women defiled, and half of the city shall go into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

Then the Lord shall go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he [as]fought in the day of battle.

And his feet shall stand in that day upon the [at]mount of olives, which is before Jerusalem on the Eastside, and the mount of olives shall cleave in the midst thereof: toward the East and toward the West there shall be a very great [au]valley, and half of the mountain shall remove toward the North, and half of the mountain toward the South.

And ye shall flee unto the [av]valley of the mountains: for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee like as ye fled from the [aw]earthquake, in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord [ax]my God shall come, and all the Saints with thee.

And in that day shall there be no clear light but dark.

And there shall be a day (it is known to the Lord) [ay]neither day nor night, but about the evening time it shall be light.

And in that day shall there [az]waters of life go out from Jerusalem, half of them toward the East sea, and half of them toward the uttermost sea, and shall be, both in summer and winter.

And the Lord shall be King over all the earth: in that day shall there be one [ba]Lord, and his Name shall be one.

10 All the land shall be turned [bb]as a plain from Geba to Rimmon, toward the South of Jerusalem, and it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place: from Benjamin’s gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananiel unto the king’s winepresses.

11 And men shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more destruction, but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited.

12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all people, that have fought against Jerusalem: their flesh shall consume away, though they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume in their holes, and their tongue shall consume in their mouth.

13 But in that day [bc]a great tumult of the Lord shall be among them, and everyone shall take [bd]the hand of his neighbor, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbor.

14 And Judah shall fight also against Jerusalem, and the arm of all the heathen shall be gathered round about, with [be]gold and silver, and great abundance of apparel.

15 Yet this shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel and of the ass, and of all the beasts that be in these tents at this [bf]plague.

16 But it shall come to pass that everyone that is left of all the nations, which came against Jerusalem, shall go up from year to year to worship the King the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of Tabernacles.

17 And who so will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King the Lord of hosts, even upon them shall come no rain.

18 And if the family of [bg]Egypt go not up, and come not, it shall not rain upon them. This shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the heathen, that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.

19 This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all the nations that come not up to keep the feast of Tabernacles.

20 In that day shall there be written upon the [bh]bridles of the horses, The holiness unto the Lord, and the [bi]pots in the Lord’s house shall be like the bowls before the altar.

21 Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holy unto the Lord of hosts, [bj]and all they that sacrifice, shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the Lord of hosts.

Malachi

A complaint against Israel, and chiefly the Priests.

The [bk]burden of the word of the Lord to Israel by the ministry of Malachi.

I have loved you, saith the Lord: yet ye say, [bl]Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob’s brother, saith the Lord? Yet I loved Jacob,

And I [bm][bn]hated Esau, and made his mountains waste, and his heritage a wilderness for dragons.

Though Edom say, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places: yet saith the Lord of hosts, They shall build, but I will destroy it, and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and the people, with whom the Lord is angry forever.

And your eyes shall see it, and ye shall say, The Lord will be magnified upon the border of Israel.

A son honoreth his father, and a servant his master. If then I be a father, where is my honor? and if I be a master, where is my fear, saith the Lord of hosts unto you, [bo]O Priests that despise my Name? and ye say, [bp]Wherein have we despised thy Name?

Ye offer [bq]unclean bread upon mine altar: and you say, Wherein have we polluted thee? in that ye say, The table of the Lord is not [br]to be regarded.

And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, it is [bs]not evil: and if ye offer the lame and sick, it is not evil: offer it now unto thy princes: will he be content with thee, or accept thy person, saith the Lord of hosts?

And now I pray you, [bt]pray before God that he may have mercy upon us: this hath been by your means: will he regard [bu]your persons, saith the Lord of hosts?

10 Who is there even among you [bv]that would shut the doors, and kindle not fire on mine altar in vain? I have no pleasure in you, saith the Lord of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand.

11 For from the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same, my Name is [bw]great among the Gentiles, and in every place incense shall be offered unto my Name, and a pure offering: for my Name is great among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts.

12 But ye have polluted it, in that ye say, [bx]The table of the Lord is polluted, and the fruit thereof even his meat is not to be regarded.

13 Ye said also, Behold, it is a [by]weariness, and ye have snuffed at it, saith the Lord of hosts, and ye offered that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick: thus ye offered an offering: should I accept this of your hand, saith the Lord?

14 But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock [bz]a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing: for I am a great king, saith the Lord of hosts, and my Name is terrible among the heathen.

1 Threatenings against the Priests, being seducers of the people.

And now, O ye [ca]Priests, this commandment is for you.

If ye will not hear it, nor consider it in your heart, to give glory [cb]unto my Name, saith the Lord of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and will curse your [cc]blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not consider it in your heart.

Behold, I will corrupt [cd]your seed, and cast dung upon your faces, even the [ce]dung of your solemn feasts, and you shall be like unto it.

And ye shall know, that I have [cf]sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant, which I made with Levi, might stand, saith the Lord of hosts.

My [cg]covenant was with him of life and peace, and I [ch]gave him fear, and he feared me, and was afraid before [ci]my Name.

The Law of [cj]truth was in his mouth, and there was no iniquity found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity.

For the Priest’s [ck]lips should preserve knowledge, and they should seek the Law at his mouth: for he is the [cl]messenger of the Lord of hosts.

But ye are gone out of the way: ye have caused many to fall by the Law: ye have broken the covenant of Levi, saith the Lord of hosts.

Therefore have I also made you to be despised, and vile before all the people, because ye kept not my ways, but have been partial in the Law.

10 Have we not all one [cm]father? hath not one God made us? why do we transgress everyone against his brother, and break the covenant of [cn]our fathers?

11 Judah hath transgressed, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: for Israel hath defiled the holiness of the Lord, which he loved, and hath married the [co]daughter of a strange god.

12 The Lord will cut off the man that doeth this: both the master and the servant out of the Tabernacle of Jacob, and him that [cp]offereth an offering unto the Lord of hosts.

13 And this have ye done again, and [cq]covered the altar of the Lord with tears, with weeping and with mourning: because the offering is no more regarded, neither received acceptably at your hands.

14 Yet ye say, [cr]Wherein? Because the Lord hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast transgressed: yet is she thy [cs]companion, and the wife of thy [ct]covenant.

15 And did not [cu]he make one? yet had he [cv]abundance of spirit: and wherefore one? because he sought a godly [cw]seed: therefore keep yourselves in your [cx]spirit, and let none trespass against the wife of his youth.

16 If thou hatest her, [cy]put her away, saith the Lord God of Israel, yet he covereth [cz]the injury under his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore keep yourselves in your spirit, and transgress not.

17 Ye have [da]wearied the Lord with your words: yet ye say wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, Everyone that doeth [db]evil, is good in the sight of the Lord, and he delighteth in them. Or where is the God of [dc]judgment?

1 Of the messenger of the Lord, John Baptist, and of Christ’s office.

Behold, I will send my [dd]messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the [de]Lord whom ye seek, shall speedily come to his Temple: even the [df]messenger of the Covenant, whom ye desire: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.

But who [dg]may abide the day of his coming? and who shall endure, when he appeareth? for he is like a purging fire, and like fuller’s soap.

And he shall sit down to try and fine the silver: he shall even fine the sons of [dh]Levi and purify them as gold and silver, that they may bring offerings unto the Lord in righteousness.

Then shall the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem be acceptable unto the Lord, as in old time and in the years afore.

And I will come near to you to judgment, and I will be a swift witness against the soothsayers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that wrongfully keep back the hireling’s wages, and vex the widow, and the fatherless, and oppress the stranger, and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts.

For I am the Lord: I change not, and ye sons of Jacob [di]are not consumed.

From the days of your fathers, ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them: [dj]return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts: but ye said, Wherein shall we return?

Will a [dk]man spoil his gods? yet have ye spoiled me: but ye say, Wherein have we spoiled thee? In [dl]tithes and offerings.

Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have spoiled me, even this whole nation.

10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in my house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven unto you, and pour you out a blessing [dm]without measure.

11 And I will rebuke the [dn]devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruit of your ground, neither shall your vine be barren in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.

12 And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a pleasant land, saith the Lord of hosts.

13 Your words have been stout [do]against me, saith the Lord: yet ye say, What have we spoken against thee?

14 Ye have said, It is in vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his commandment, and that we walked humbly before the Lord of hosts?

15 Therefore we count the proud blessed: even they that work wickedness, are set up, and they that tempt God, yea, they are [dp]delivered.

16 [dq]Then spake they that feared the Lord, everyone to his neighbor, and the Lord hearkened and heard it, and a [dr]book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his Name.

17 And they shall be to me, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day [ds]that I shall do this, for a flock, and I will [dt]spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.

18 Then shall you return, and discern between the righteous and wicked, between him that serveth God, and him that serveth him not.

The day of the Lord before the which Elijah should come.

For behold, the day cometh that shall [du]burn as an oven, and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble, and the day that cometh, shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, and shall leave them neither root nor branch.

But unto you that fear my name, shall the [dv]sun of righteousness arise, and health shall be under his wings, and ye shall go [dw]forth and grow up as fat calves.

And ye shall tread down the wicked: for they shall be dust under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the Lord of hosts.

[dx]Remember the Law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel with the statutes and judgments.

Behold, I will send you [dy]Elijah the Prophet before the coming of the great and [dz]fearful day of the Lord.

And he shall [ea]turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and [eb]smite the earth with cursing.

The Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ, According to Matthew

1 That Jesus is that Messiah, the Savior promised to the Fathers. 18 The nativity of Christ.

The (A)[ec][ed]book of the [ee]generation of Jesus Christ the son of David, the [ef]son of Abraham.

(B)Abraham begat Isaac. (C)And Isaac begat Jacob. And (D)Jacob begat Judah and his brethren.

(E)And Judah begat Perez, and Zerah of Tamar. And Perez begat Hezron. And Hezron begat Ram.

And Ram begat Amminadab. And Amminadab begat Nahshon. And Nahshon begat Salmon.

And Salmon begat (F)Boaz of Rahab. And Boaz begat Obed of Ruth. And Obed begat Jesse.

And (G)Jesse begat David the King. And David the King begat Solomon of her that was (H)the wife of Uriah.

And (I)Solomon begat Rehoboam. And Rehoboam begat Abijah. And Abijah begat Asa.

And Asa begat Jehoshaphat. And Jehoshaphat begat Joram. And Joram begat Uzziah.

And Uzziah begat Jotham. And Jotham begat Ahaz. And Ahaz begat Hezekiah.

10 And (J)Hezekiah begat Manasseh. And Manasseh begat Amon. And Amon begat Josiah.

11 And (K)Josiah begat Jakim. And Jakim [eg]begat Jeconiah and his brethren about the time they were carried away to Babylon.

12 And after they were carried away into Babylon, (L)Jeconiah begat Shealtiel. And (M)Shealtiel be-gat Zerubbabel.

13 And Zerubbabel begat Abiud. And Abiud begat Eliakim. And Eliakim begat Azor.

14 And Azor begat Zadok. And Zadok begat Achim. And Achim begat Eliud.

15 And Eliud begat Eleazar. And Eleazar begat Matthan. And Matthan begat Jacob.

16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, that is called Christ.

17 So [eh]all the generations from Abraham to David, are fourteen generations. And from David until they were carried away into Babylon, fourteen generations: and after they were carried away into Babylon until Christ, fourteen generations.

18 ¶ Now the birth of [ei]Jesus Christ was thus, When as his mother Mary was (N)betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the holy Ghost.

19 Then Joseph her husband being a just man, and not willing to (O)make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.

20 But while he thought these things, behold, the Angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, the son of David, fear not to [ej]take Mary thy [ek]wife: for that which is [el]conceived in her, is of the holy Ghost.

21 And she shall bring [em]forth a son, and thou shalt (P)call his name JESUS: for he shall (Q)[en]save his people from their sins.

22 And all this was done that it might be fulfilled, which is spoken of the Lord by the Prophet, saying,

23 (R)Behold, a [eo]virgin shall be with child, and shall bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which is by interpretation, God with us.

24 ¶ Then Joseph being raised from sleep, did as the Angel of the Lord had enjoined him, and took his wife.

25 But he knew her not, [ep]till she had brought forth her first born son, and he called his name JESUS.

The wise men, who are the firstfruits of the Gentiles, worship Christ. 14 Joseph fled into Egypt with Jesus and his mother. 16 Herod slayeth the children.

When (S)[eq]Jesus then was born at Bethlehem in [er]Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came [es]Wise men from the East to Jerusalem,

Saying, Where is the King of the Jews that is born? for we have seen his star in the East, and are come to worship him.

When king Herod heard this, he was [et]troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

And gathering together all the [eu]chief Priests and [ev]Scribes of the people, he asked of them, where Christ should be born.

And they said unto him, At Bethlehem in Judea: for so it is written by the Prophet,

(T)And thou Bethlehem in the land of Judah, art not the [ew]least among the Princes of Judah: for out of thee shall come the governor that [ex]shall feed my people Israel.

Then Herod privily called the Wise men, and diligently inquired of them the time of the star that appeared,

And sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go, and search diligently for the babe: and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come also, and worship him.

¶ So when they had heard the king, they departed: and lo, the star which they had seen in the East, went before them, till it came and stood over the place where the babe was.

10 And when they saw the star, they rejoiced with an exceeding great joy,

11 And went into the house, and found the babe with Mary his mother, and [ey]fell down, and worshipped him, and opened their [ez]treasures, and presented unto him gifts, even gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

12 And after they were [fa]warned of God in a dream, that they should not go again to Herod, they returned into their country another way.

13 [fb]After their departure, behold, the Angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the babe and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there till I bring thee word, for Herod will seek the babe to destroy him.

14 So he arose and took the babe and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt.

15 And was there unto the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled, which is spoken of the Lord by the (U)Prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

16 ¶ Then Herod, seeing that he was mocked of the Wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently searched out of the Wise men.

17 Then was that fulfilled which is spoken [fc]by the Prophet Jeremiah, saying,

18 (V)In Ramah was [fd]a voice heard, mourning, and weeping, and great howling: [fe]Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they were not.

19 [ff]And when Herod was dead, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

20 Saying, Arise, and take the babe and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the babe’s life.

21 Then he arose up, and took the babe and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: yet after he was warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee.

23 And went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Prophets, which was, That he should be called a Nazarite.

1 John preacheth. 4 His apparel and meat. 5 He baptizeth. 8 The fruits of repentance. 10 The axe at the root of the trees. 12 The fan and the chaff. 13 Christ is baptized.

And (W)in [fg]those days, [fh]John the Baptist came and preached in the [fi]wilderness of Judea,

And said, [fj]Repent: for the [fk]kingdom of heaven is at hand.

For this is he of whom it is spoken by the Prophet Isaiah, saying, (X)The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord: [fl]make his paths straight.

(Y)And this John had his garment of camel’s hair, and a girdle of a skin about his loins, his meat was also [fm]locusts and wild honey.

(Z)Then went out to him [fn]Jerusalem and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan,

And they were baptized of him in Jordan, [fo]confessing their sins.

[fp]Now when he saw many of the Pharisees, and of the Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, (AA)O generation of vipers, who hath forewarned you to flee from the anger to come?

[fq]Bring forth therefore fruit worthy amendment of life,

[fr]And [fs]think not to say [ft]with yourselves, (AB)We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able even of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

10 And now also is the axe put to the root of the trees: (AC)therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

11 (AD)[fu]Indeed I baptize you with water to [fv]amendment of life, but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear, he will baptize you with the holy Ghost, and with fire.

12 [fw]Which hath his fan in his hand, and will [fx]make clean his floor, and gather his wheat into his garner, but will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

13 (AE)[fy]Then came Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John to be baptized of him.

14 But John earnestly put him back, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

15 Then Jesus answering, said to him, Let be now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill [fz]all righteousness. So he suffered him.

16 And Jesus when he was baptized, came straight out of the water. And lo, the heavens were opened unto [ga]him, and John saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and [lighting] upon him.

17 [gb]And lo, a voice came from heaven, saying, (AF)This is my beloved Son, in whom I am [gc]well pleased.

1 Christ is tempted. 4 He vanquisheth the devil with Scripture. 11 The Angels minister unto him. 12 He preacheth repentance, and that himself is come. 18 The calling of Peter, Andrew. 21 James and John. 24 He preacheth the Gospel, and healeth the diseased.

Then (AG)was [gd]Jesus led aside of the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted of the devil.

And when he had fasted [ge]forty days, and forty nights, he was afterward hungry.

Then came to him the tempter, and said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

But he answering, said, It is written, (AH)Man shall not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Then the devil took him up into the holy city, and set him on a [gf]pinnacle of the Temple.

And said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down, for it is written, (AI)that he will give his Angels charge over thee, and with their hands they shall lift thee up, lest at any time thou shouldest dash thy foot against a stone.

Jesus said unto him, It is written again, (AJ)Thou shalt not [gg]tempt the Lord thy God.

Again the devil took him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them,

And said to him, All these will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down, and worship me.

10 Then said Jesus unto him, Avoid Satan: for it is written, (AK)Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

11 (AL)Then the devil left him: and behold, the Angels came, and ministered unto him.

12 (AM)[gh]And when Jesus had heard that John was committed to prison, he returned into Galilee,

13 And leaving Nazareth, went and dwelt in [gi]Capernaum, which is near the sea in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali,

14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the Prophet, saying,

15 (AN)The land of Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali by the way of the [gj]sea, beyond Jordan, [gk]Galilee of the Gentiles:

16 The people which sat in darkness, saw great light: and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death, light is risen up.

17 (AO)From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Amend your lives: for the kingdom of heaven is at [gl]hand.

18 [gm]And Jesus walking by the sea of Galilee saw two brethren, Simon, which was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishers.)

19 (AP)And he said unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

20 And they straightway leaving the nets, followed him.

21 And when he was gone forth from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them.

22 And they without tarrying, leaving the ship and their father, followed him.

23 So [gn]Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in [go]their [gp]Synagogues, and preaching the Gospel of the [gq]kingdom, and healing [gr]every sickness, and every [gs]disease among the people.

24 And his fame spread abroad through all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people, that were taken with divers diseases, and [gt]torments, and them that were possessed with devils, and those which were [gu]lunatic, and those that had the [gv]palsy: and he healed them.

25 And there followed him great multitudes out of Galilee, and Decapolis, and Jerusalem, and Judea, and from beyond Jordan.
