Version
Galatians 3:26 - Colossians 4:18

26 For through faith you are all children of God[a] in Christ Jesus.(A) 27 [b]For all of you who were baptized into Christ(B) have clothed yourselves with Christ.[c] 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.(C) 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendant, heirs according to the promise.(D)

Chapter 4

God’s Free Children in Christ.[d] I mean that as long as the heir is not of age,[e] he is no different from a slave, although he is the owner of everything, but he is under the supervision of guardians and administrators until the date set by his father. (E)In the same way we also, when we were not of age, were enslaved to the elemental powers of the world.[f] But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,(F) to ransom those under the law, so that we might receive adoption.(G) As proof that you are children,[g] God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”(H) So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.(I)

Do Not Throw This Freedom Away.[h] (J)At a time when you did not know God, you became slaves to things that by nature are not gods;[i] but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and destitute elemental powers? Do you want to be slaves to them all over again?(K) 10 You are observing days,(L) months, seasons, and years.[j] 11 I am afraid on your account that perhaps I have labored for you in vain.[k]

Appeal to Former Loyalty.[l] 12 I implore you, brothers, be as I am, because I have also become as you are.[m] You did me no wrong;(M) 13 you know that it was because of a physical illness[n] that I originally preached the gospel to you, 14 and you did not show disdain or contempt because of the trial caused you by my physical condition, but rather you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. 15 Where now is that blessedness of yours?[o] Indeed, I can testify to you that, if it had been possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me. 16 So now have I become your enemy by telling you the truth? 17 They show interest in you, but not in a good way; they want to isolate you,[p] so that you may show interest in them.(N) 18 Now it is good to be shown interest for good reason at all times, and not only when I am with you. 19 My children, for whom I am again in labor until Christ be formed in you!(O) 20 I would like to be with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed because of you.

An Allegory on Christian Freedom.[q] 21 Tell me, you who want to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the freeborn woman.(P) 23 The son of the slave woman was born naturally, the son of the freeborn through a promise.(Q) 24 Now this is an allegory. These women represent two covenants. One was from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; this is Hagar.(R) 25 Hagar represents Sinai,[r] a mountain in Arabia; it corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery along with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is freeborn, and she is our mother.(S) 27 For it is written:

“Rejoice, you barren one who bore no children;(T)
    break forth and shout, you who were not in labor;
for more numerous are the children of the deserted one
than of her who has a husband.”[s]

28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of the promise.(U) 29 But just as then the child of the flesh persecuted the child of the spirit, it is the same now. 30 But what does the scripture say?

“Drive out the slave woman and her son!
For the son of the slave woman shall not share the inheritance with the son”(V)

of the freeborn. 31 Therefore, brothers, we are children not of the slave woman but of the freeborn woman.(W)

V. Exhortation to Christian Living

Chapter 5

The Importance of Faith.[t] For freedom[u] Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.(X)

It is I, Paul, who am telling you that if you have yourselves circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you.(Y) Once again I declare to every man who has himself circumcised(Z) that he is bound to observe the entire law.[v] You are separated from Christ, you who are trying to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. (AA)For through the Spirit, by faith, we await the hope of righteousness. (AB)For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.[w]

Be Not Misled.[x] You were running well;[y] who hindered you from following [the] truth? (AC)That enticement does not come from the one who called you.[z] A little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough.(AD) 10 I am confident of you in the Lord that you will not take a different view, and that the one who is troubling you will bear the condemnation, whoever he may be.(AE) 11 As for me, brothers, if I am still preaching circumcision,[aa] why am I still being persecuted? In that case, the stumbling block of the cross has been abolished.(AF) 12 Would that those who are upsetting you might also castrate themselves![ab]

Freedom for Service.[ac] 13 For you were called for freedom, brothers.(AG) But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve[ad] one another through love. 14 For the whole law(AH) is fulfilled in one statement, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”[ae] 15 But if you go on biting and devouring one another, beware that you are not consumed by one another.

16 (AI)I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh.[af] 17 For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want.(AJ) 18 But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.(AK) 19 [ag]Now the works of the flesh are obvious: immorality, impurity, licentiousness,(AL) 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions,(AM) 21 occasions of envy,[ah] drinking bouts, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,(AN) 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.(AO) 24 Now those who belong to Christ [Jesus] have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires.(AP) 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit.(AQ) 26 Let us not be conceited, provoking one another, envious of one another.(AR)

Chapter 6

Life in the Community of Christ.[ai] Brothers, even if a person is caught in some transgression, you who are spiritual should correct that one in a gentle spirit, looking to yourself, so that you also may not be tempted.(AS) Bear one another’s burdens,(AT) and so you will fulfill the law of Christ.[aj] (AU)For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he is deluding himself. [ak]Each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason to boast with regard to himself alone, and not with regard to someone else; for each will bear his own load.(AV)

(AW)One who is being instructed in the word should share all good things with his instructor.[al] Make no mistake: God is not mocked, for a person will reap only what he sows, because the one who sows for his flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows for the spirit will reap eternal life from the spirit.(AX) Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up.(AY) 10 So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all,(AZ) but especially to those who belong to the family of the faith.[am]

VI. Conclusion

Final Appeal.[an] 11 See with what large letters[ao] I am writing to you in my own hand!(BA) 12 [ap]It is those who want to make a good appearance in the flesh who are trying to compel you to have yourselves circumcised, only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.(BB) 13 Not even those having themselves circumcised[aq] observe the law themselves; they only want you to be circumcised so that they may boast of your flesh. 14 But may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which[ar] the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.(BC) 15 For neither does circumcision mean anything, nor does uncircumcision,(BD) but only a new creation.[as] 16 Peace and mercy be to all who follow this rule[at] and to the Israel of God.(BE)

17 From now on, let no one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus[au] on my body.(BF)

18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.(BG)

I. Address

Chapter 1

Greeting.[av] Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the holy ones who are [in Ephesus][aw] faithful in Christ Jesus:(BH) grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.(BI)

The Father’s Plan of Salvation. [ax]Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,(BJ) who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens,[ay] as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him.(BK) In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor of his will,(BL) for the praise of the glory of his grace that he granted us in the beloved.(BM)

Fulfillment Through Christ. In him we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace(BN) that he lavished upon us. In all wisdom and insight,(BO) he has made known to us the mystery[az] of his will in accord with his favor that he set forth in him(BP) 10 as a plan for the fullness of times, to sum up all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth.(BQ)

Inheritance Through the Spirit. 11 In him we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will,(BR) 12 so that we might exist for the praise of his glory, we who first hoped[ba] in Christ. 13 In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed[bb] with the promised holy Spirit,(BS) 14 which is the first installment[bc] of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s possession, to the praise of his glory.(BT)

II. Unity of the Church in Christ

The Church as Christ’s Body.[bd] 15 Therefore, I, too, hearing of your faith in the Lord Jesus and of your love[be] for all the holy ones,(BU) 16 do not cease giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers,(BV) 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of him.(BW) 18 May the eyes of [your] hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones,(BX) 19 and what is the surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe, in accord with the exercise of his great might,(BY) 20 which he worked in Christ, raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens,(BZ) 21 far above every principality, authority, power, and dominion, and every name that is named not only in this age but also in the one to come.(CA) 22 And he put all things beneath his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,(CB) 23 which is his body,[bf] the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way.(CC)

Chapter 2[bg]

Generosity of God’s Plan.[bh] (CD)You were dead in your transgressions and sins[bi] in which you once lived following the age of this world,[bj] following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the disobedient.(CE) All of us once lived among them in the desires of our flesh, following the wishes of the flesh and the impulses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like the rest.(CF) But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, (CG)even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ[bk] (by grace you have been saved), raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus,(CH) that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.(CI) For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God;(CJ) it is not from works, so no one may boast.(CK) 10 For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.(CL)

One in Christ.[bl] 11 Therefore, remember that at one time you, Gentiles in the flesh, called the uncircumcision by those called the circumcision, which is done in the flesh by human hands, 12 were at that time without Christ, alienated from the community of Israel[bm] and strangers to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world.(CM) 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have become near by the blood of Christ.(CN)

14 [bn]For he is our peace, he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, through his flesh,(CO) 15 abolishing the law with its commandments and legal claims, that he might create in himself one new person[bo] in place of the two, thus establishing peace,(CP) 16 and might reconcile both with God, in one body, through the cross, putting that enmity to death by it.(CQ) 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near,(CR) 18 for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.(CS)

19 So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God,(CT) 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,(CU) with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone.[bp] 21 Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord;(CV) 22 in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.(CW)

III. World Mission of the Church

Chapter 3

Commission to Preach God’s Plan.[bq] Because of this,(CX) I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ[br] [Jesus] for you Gentiles— if, as I suppose, you have heard of the stewardship[bs] of God’s grace that was given to me for your benefit,(CY) [namely, that] the mystery[bt] was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly earlier.(CZ) When you read this you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to human beings in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit,(DA) that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.(DB)

Of this I became a minister by the gift of God’s grace that was granted me in accord with the exercise of his power.(DC) To me, the very least of all the holy ones, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the inscrutable riches of Christ,(DD) and to bring to light [for all][bu] what is the plan of the mystery hidden from ages past in God who created all things,(DE) 10 so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the principalities and authorities[bv] in the heavens.(DF) 11 This was according to the eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness of speech and confidence of access through faith in him.(DG) 13 So I ask you not to lose heart over my afflictions for you; this is your glory.(DH)

Prayer for the Readers.[bw] 14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family[bx] in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that he may grant you in accord with the riches of his glory to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self,(DI) 17 and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, rooted and grounded in love,(DJ) 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones what is the breadth and length and height and depth,(DK) 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.(DL)

20 Now to him who is able to accomplish far more than all we ask or imagine, by the power at work within us,(DM) 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Chapter 4

Unity in the Body. [by]I, then, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received,(DN) with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love,(DO) striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace:(DP) [bz]one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call;(DQ) one Lord, one faith, one baptism;(DR) one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.(DS)

Diversity of Gifts. But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.(DT) Therefore, it says:

“He ascended[ca] on high and took prisoners captive;
    he gave gifts to men.”(DU)

What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended into the lower [regions] of the earth? 10 The one who descended is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.

11 [cb]And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers,(DV) 12 to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry,[cc] for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood,[cd] to the extent of the full stature of Christ,(DW) 14 so that we may no longer be infants, tossed by waves and swept along by every wind of teaching arising from human trickery, from their cunning in the interests of deceitful scheming.(DX) 15 Rather, living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who is the head,(DY) Christ,[ce] 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, with the proper functioning of each part, brings about the body’s growth and builds itself up in love.(DZ)

Renewal in Christ.[cf] 17 So I declare and testify in the Lord that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds;(EA) 18 darkened in understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their ignorance, because of their hardness of heart,(EB) 19 they have become callous and have handed themselves over to licentiousness for the practice of every kind of impurity to excess.(EC) 20 That is not how you learned Christ, 21 assuming that you have heard of him and were taught in him, as truth is in Jesus, 22 that you should put away the old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires,(ED) 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your minds,(EE) 24 and put on[cg] the new self, created in God’s way in righteousness and holiness of truth.(EF)

IV. Daily Conduct, an Expression of Unity[ch]

Rules for the New Life. 25 Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak the truth, each one to his neighbor, for we are members one of another.(EG) 26 Be angry but do not sin;(EH) do not let the sun set on your anger,[ci] 27 and do not leave room for the devil.(EI) 28 The thief must no longer steal, but rather labor, doing honest work[cj] with his [own] hands, so that he may have something to share with one in need.(EJ) 29 No foul language should come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for needed edification, that it may impart grace to those who hear.(EK) 30 And do not grieve the holy Spirit of God, with which you were sealed for the day of redemption.[ck] 31 All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice.(EL) 32 [And] be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.(EM)

Chapter 5

So be imitators of God,[cl] as beloved children,(EN) and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma.(EO) Immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is fitting among holy ones,(EP) no obscenity or silly or suggestive talk, which is out of place, but instead, thanksgiving.(EQ) Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure or greedy person, that is, an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.(ER)

Duty to Live in the Light. (ES)Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the disobedient.[cm] So do not be associated with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light,(ET) for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth.(EU) 10 Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.(EV) 11 Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them,(EW) 12 for it is shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret; 13 but everything exposed by the light becomes visible,(EX) 14 for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says:(EY)

“Awake, O sleeper,
    and arise from the dead,
and Christ will give you light.”[cn]

15 [co]Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise,(EZ) 16 making the most of the opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore, do not continue in ignorance, but try to understand what is the will of the Lord. 18 And do not get drunk on wine, in which lies debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,(FA) 19 addressing one another [in] psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts,(FB) 20 giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.(FC)

Wives and Husbands. 21 [cp]Be subordinate to one another(FD) out of reverence for Christ.[cq] 22 Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord.(FE) 23 For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body.(FF) 24 As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her(FG) 26 to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word,(FH) 27 that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.(FI) 28 So [also] husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body.(FJ)

31 “For this reason a man shall leave [his] father and [his] mother
and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh.”(FK)

32 This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.(FL) 33 In any case, each one of you should love his wife as himself, and the wife should respect her husband.

Chapter 6

Children and Parents. Children, obey your parents [in the Lord], for this is right.(FM) “Honor your father and mother.”(FN) This is the first commandment with a promise, “that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on earth.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up with the training and instruction of the Lord.(FO)

Slaves and Masters. Slaves, be obedient to your human masters with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ,(FP) not only when being watched, as currying favor, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,(FQ) willingly serving the Lord and not human beings, knowing that each will be requited from the Lord for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. Masters, act in the same way toward them, and stop bullying, knowing that both they and you have a Master in heaven and that with him there is no partiality.(FR)

Battle Against Evil. 10 [cr]Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. 11 Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil.(FS) 12 For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens.(FT) 13 Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground.(FU) 14 So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate,(FV) 15 and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace.(FW) 16 In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all [the] flaming arrows of the evil one.(FX) 17 And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.(FY)

Constant Prayer. 18 With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit. To that end, be watchful with all perseverance and supplication for all the holy ones(FZ) 19 and also for me, that speech may be given me to open my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel(GA) 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, so that I may have the courage to speak as I must.(GB)

V. Conclusion

A Final Message.[cs] 21 So that you also may have news of me and of what I am doing, Tychicus, my beloved brother and trustworthy minister in the Lord, will tell you everything.(GC) 22 I am sending him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know about us and that he may encourage your hearts.(GD)

23 Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ in immortality.(GE)

I. Address

Chapter 1

Greeting.[ct] Paul and Timothy, slaves[cu] of Christ Jesus, to all the holy ones in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the overseers and ministers:(GF) (GG)grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.[cv]

Thanksgiving.[cw] I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you,(GH) praying always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for the gospel from the first day until now. (GI)I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.[cx] It is right that I should think this way about all of you, because I hold you in my heart, you who are all partners with me in grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.(GJ) And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception,(GK) 10 to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,(GL) 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.(GM)

II. Progress of the Gospel[cy]

12 (GN)I want you to know, brothers, that my situation has turned out rather to advance the gospel, 13 so that my imprisonment has become well known in Christ throughout the whole praetorium[cz] and to all the rest,(GO) 14 [da]and so that the majority of the brothers, having taken encouragement in the Lord from my imprisonment, dare more than ever to proclaim the word fearlessly.

15 Of course, some preach Christ from envy and rivalry, others from good will. 16 The latter act out of love, aware that I am here for the defense of the gospel; 17 the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not from pure motives, thinking that they will cause me trouble in my imprisonment. 18 What difference does it make, as long as in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is being proclaimed?(GP) And in that I rejoice.[db]

Indeed I shall continue to rejoice, 19 [dc]for I know that this will result in deliverance for me[dd] through your prayers and support from the Spirit of Jesus Christ.(GQ) 20 My eager expectation and hope is that I shall not be put to shame in any way, but that with all boldness, now as always, Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.(GR) 21 For to me life is Christ, and death is gain.(GS) 22 If I go on living in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. And I do not know which I shall choose.(GT) 23 I am caught between the two. I long to depart this life and be with Christ, [for] that is far better.(GU) 24 Yet that I remain [in] the flesh is more necessary for your benefit. 25 And this I know with confidence, that I shall remain and continue in the service of all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that your boasting in Christ Jesus may abound on account of me when I come to you again.

III. Instructions for the Community

Steadfastness in Faith.[de] 27 Only, conduct yourselves in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear news of you, that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind struggling together for the faith of the gospel,(GV) 28 not intimidated in any way by your opponents. This is proof to them of destruction, but of your salvation. And this is God’s doing. 29 For to you has been granted, for the sake of Christ, not only to believe in him but also to suffer for him.(GW) 30 Yours is the same struggle(GX) as you saw in me and now hear about me.[df]

Chapter 2

Plea for Unity and Humility.[dg] If there is any encouragement in Christ, any solace in love, any participation in the Spirit, any compassion and mercy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing.(GY) Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves,(GZ) each looking out not for his own interests, but [also] everyone for those of others.(HA)

Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus,[dh]

Who,[di] though he was in the form of God,(HB)
did not regard equality with God something to be grasped.[dj]
    Rather, he emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
    coming in human likeness;[dk]
    and found human in appearance,(HC)
    he humbled himself,(HD)
        becoming obedient to death,
        even death on a cross.[dl]
Because of this, God greatly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name[dm]
    that is above every name,(HE)
10     that at the name of Jesus
    every knee should bend,[dn]
of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth,(HF)
11     and every tongue confess that
    Jesus Christ is Lord,[do]
to the glory of God the Father.(HG)

Obedience and Service in the World.[dp] 12 (HH)So then, my beloved, obedient as you have always been, not only when I am present but all the more now when I am absent, work out your salvation with fear and trembling.[dq] 13 For God is the one who, for his good purpose, works in you both to desire and to work.(HI) 14 Do everything without grumbling or questioning,(HJ) 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation,[dr] among whom you shine like lights in the world,(HK) 16 as you hold on to the word of life, so that my boast for the day of Christ may be that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.(HL) 17 But, even if I am poured out as a libation[ds] upon the sacrificial service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with all of you.(HM) 18 In the same way you also should rejoice and share your joy with me.(HN)

IV. Travel Plans of Paul and His Assistants[dt]

Timothy and Paul. 19 I hope, in the Lord Jesus, to send Timothy[du] to you soon, so that I too may be heartened by hearing news of you.(HO) 20 For I have no one comparable to him for genuine interest in whatever concerns you. 21 For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.(HP) 22 But you know his worth, how as a child with a father he served along with me in the cause of the gospel. 23 He it is, then, whom I hope to send as soon as I see how things go with me, 24 but I am confident in the Lord that I myself will also come soon.[dv]

Epaphroditus. 25 With regard to Epaphroditus,[dw] my brother and co-worker and fellow soldier, your messenger and minister in my need, I consider it necessary to send him to you.(HQ) 26 For he has been longing for all of you and was distressed because you heard that he was ill. 27 He was indeed ill, close to death; but God had mercy on him, not just on him but also on me, so that I might not have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 I send him therefore with the greater eagerness, so that, on seeing him, you may rejoice again, and I may have less anxiety. 29 Welcome him then in the Lord with all joy and hold such people in esteem,(HR) 30 because for the sake of the work of Christ he came close to death, risking his life to make up for those services to me that you could not perform.

Chapter 3

Concluding Admonitions. Finally, my brothers, rejoice[dx] in the Lord. Writing the same things to you is no burden for me but is a safeguard for you.(HS)

V. Polemic: Righteousness and the Goal in Christ[dy]

Against Legalistic Teachers. [dz]Beware of the dogs! Beware of the evil-workers!(HT) Beware of the mutilation![ea] For we are the circumcision,[eb] we who worship through the Spirit of God, who boast in Christ Jesus and do not put our confidence in flesh,(HU) although I myself have grounds for confidence even in the flesh.(HV)

Paul’s Autobiography. If anyone else thinks he can be confident in flesh, all the more can I. Circumcised on the eighth day,[ec] of the race of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrew parentage, in observance of the law a Pharisee,(HW) in zeal I persecuted the church, in righteousness based on the law I was blameless.(HX)

Righteousness from God. [But] whatever gains I had, these I have come to consider a loss[ed] because of Christ.(HY) More than that, I even consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having any righteousness of my own based on the law but that which comes through faith in Christ,(HZ) the righteousness from God, depending on faith 10 to know him and the power of his resurrection and [the] sharing of his sufferings by being conformed to his death,(IA) 11 if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead.(IB)

Forward in Christ.[ee] 12 (IC)It is not that I have already taken hold of it or have already attained perfect maturity,[ef] but I continue my pursuit in hope that I may possess it, since I have indeed been taken possession of by Christ [Jesus]. 13 Brothers, I for my part do not consider myself to have taken possession. Just one thing: forgetting what lies behind but straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God’s upward calling, in Christ Jesus.(ID) 15 Let us, then, who are “perfectly mature” adopt this attitude. And if you have a different attitude, this too God will reveal to you. 16 Only, with regard to what we have attained, continue on the same course.[eg]

Wrong Conduct and Our Goal.[eh] 17 Join with others in being imitators of me,[ei] brothers, and observe those who thus conduct themselves according to the model you have in us.(IE) 18 For many, as I have often told you and now tell you even in tears, conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ.(IF) 19 Their end is destruction. Their God is their stomach; their glory is in their “shame.” Their minds are occupied with earthly things.(IG) 20 But our citizenship[ej] is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.(IH) 21 He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body by the power that enables him also to bring all things into subjection to himself.(II)

VI. Instructions for the Community[ek]

Chapter 4

Live in Concord. Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, in this way stand firm in the Lord, beloved.(IJ)

I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche[el] to come to a mutual understanding in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you also, my true yokemate,[em] to help them, for they have struggled at my side in promoting the gospel, along with Clement and my other co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.(IK)

Joy and Peace. Rejoice[en] in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice!(IL) Your kindness[eo] should be known to all. The Lord is near.(IM) Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.(IN) Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.(IO)

(IP)Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.[ep] Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me.(IQ) Then the God of peace will be with you.[eq]

VII. Gratitude for the Philippians’ Generosity[er]

10 I rejoice greatly in the Lord that now at last you revived your concern for me. You were, of course, concerned about me but lacked an opportunity.(IR) 11 Not that I say this because of need, for I have learned, in whatever situation I find myself, to be self-sufficient.(IS) 12 I know indeed how to live in humble circumstances; I know also how to live with abundance. In every circumstance and in all things I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. 13 I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me.(IT) 14 Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress.

15 You Philippians indeed know that at the beginning of the gospel,[es] when I left Macedonia, not a single church shared with me in an account of giving and receiving, except you alone. 16 For even when I was at Thessalonica you sent me something for my needs, not only once but more than once. 17 It is not that I am eager for the gift; rather, I am eager for the profit that accrues to your account. 18 I have received full payment and I abound. I am very well supplied because of what I received from you through Epaphroditus, “a fragrant aroma,” an acceptable sacrifice,[et] pleasing to God.(IU) 19 My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.(IV) 20 To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen.(IW)

VIII. Farewell[eu]

21 Give my greetings to every holy one in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me send you their greetings; 22 (IX)all the holy ones send you their greetings, especially those of Caesar’s household.[ev] 23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

I. Address

Chapter 1

Greeting.[ew] Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,(IY) to the holy ones and faithful brothers in Christ in Colossae: grace to you and peace from God our Father.

Thanksgiving.[ex] We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you,(IZ) for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love that you have for all the holy ones because of the hope reserved for you in heaven. Of this you have already heard through the word of truth, the gospel,(JA) that has come to you. Just as in the whole world it is bearing fruit and growing, so also among you, from the day you heard it and came to know the grace of God in truth, (JB)as you learned it from Epaphras[ey] our beloved fellow slave, who is a trustworthy minister of Christ on your behalf and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.

Prayer for Continued Progress.[ez] Therefore, from the day we heard this, we do not cease praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding(JC) 10 to live in a manner worthy of the Lord, so as to be fully pleasing, in every good work bearing fruit and growing in the knowledge of God, 11 strengthened with every power, in accord with his glorious might, for all endurance and patience, with joy 12 [fa]giving thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light.(JD) 13 He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.(JE)

II. The Preeminence of Christ

His Person and Work

15 [fb]He is the image[fc] of the invisible God,
    the firstborn of all creation.(JF)
16 For in him[fd] were created all things in heaven and on earth,
    the visible and the invisible,
    whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers;
all things were created through him and for him.(JG)
17 He is before all things,
and in him all things hold together.
18 He is the head of the body, the church.[fe]
He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead,
that in all things he himself might be preeminent.(JH)
19 For in him all the fullness[ff] was pleased to dwell,
20 and through him to reconcile all things for him,
making peace by the blood of his cross[fg]
[through him], whether those on earth or those in heaven.(JI)

21 [fh]And you who once were alienated and hostile in mind because of evil deeds(JJ) 22 he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through his death, to present you holy, without blemish, and irreproachable before him, 23 provided that you persevere in the faith, firmly grounded, stable, and not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, am a minister.

Christ in Us.[fi] 24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking[fj] in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church, 25 of which I am a minister in accordance with God’s stewardship given to me to bring to completion for you the word of God, 26 the mystery hidden from ages and from generations past. But now it has been manifested to his holy ones,(JK) 27 to whom God chose to make known the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; it is Christ in you, the hope for glory.(JL) 28 It is he whom we proclaim, admonishing everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.(JM) 29 For this I labor and struggle, in accord with the exercise of his power working within me.(JN)

Chapter 2

For I want you to know how great a struggle I am having for you and for those in Laodicea[fk] and all who have not seen me face to face, that their hearts may be encouraged as they are brought together in love, to have all the richness of fully assured understanding, for the knowledge of the mystery of God, Christ,(JO) in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.(JP)

III. Warnings Against False Teachers[fl]

A General Admonition. I say this so that no one may deceive you by specious arguments.(JQ) For even if I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing as I observe your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.(JR) So, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in him, rooted in him and built upon him and established in the faith as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.(JS) See to it that no one captivate you with an empty, seductive philosophy according to human tradition, according to the elemental powers of the world[fm] and not according to Christ.(JT)

Sovereign Role of Christ. (JU)For in him dwells the whole fullness of the deity[fn] bodily, 10 and you share in this fullness in him, who is the head of every principality and power. 11 (JV)In him[fo] you were also circumcised with a circumcision not administered by hand, by stripping off the carnal body, with the circumcision of Christ. 12 You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.(JW) 13 (JX)And even when you were dead [in] transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions; 14 [fp]obliterating the bond against us, with its legal claims, which was opposed to us, he also removed it from our midst, nailing it to the cross;(JY) 15 despoiling the principalities and the powers, he made a public spectacle of them,(JZ) leading them away in triumph by it.[fq]

Practices Contrary to Faith. 16 (KA)Let no one, then, pass judgment on you in matters of food and drink or with regard to a festival or new moon or sabbath.[fr] 17 These are shadows of things to come; the reality belongs to Christ.(KB) 18 Let no one disqualify you, delighting in self-abasement and worship of angels, taking his stand on visions,[fs] inflated without reason by his fleshly mind,(KC) 19 and not holding closely to the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and bonds, achieves the growth that comes from God.(KD)

20 If you died with Christ to the elemental powers of the world, why do you submit to regulations as if you were still living in the world? 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!” 22 These are all things destined to perish with use; they accord with human precepts and teachings.(KE) 23 While they have a semblance of wisdom in rigor of devotion and self-abasement [and] severity to the body, they are of no value against gratification of the flesh.

IV. The Ideal Christian Life in the World

Chapter 3

Mystical Death and Resurrection.[ft] If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.(KF) Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.(KG) When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.

Renunciation of Vice.[fu] Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly:(KH) immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry.[fv] Because of these the wrath of God[fw] is coming [upon the disobedient].(KI) By these you too once conducted yourselves, when you lived in that way. But now you must put them all away:[fx] anger, fury, malice, slander, and obscene language out of your mouths.(KJ) Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices(KK) 10 [fy]and have put on the new self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its creator.(KL) 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian,[fz] slave, free; but Christ is all and in all.(KM)

12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,(KN) 13 bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do.(KO) 14 And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection.(KP) 15 And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful.(KQ) 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.(KR) 17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.(KS)

The Christian Family. 18 [ga]Wives, be subordinate to your husbands, as is proper in the Lord.(KT) 19 Husbands, love your wives, and avoid any bitterness toward them. 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord.(KU) 21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they may not become discouraged.(KV)

Slaves and Masters. 22 Slaves,[gb] obey your human masters in everything, not only when being watched, as currying favor, but in simplicity of heart, fearing the Lord.(KW) 23 Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others, 24 knowing that you will receive from the Lord the due payment of the inheritance; be slaves of the Lord Christ. 25 For the wrongdoer will receive recompense for the wrong he committed, and there is no partiality.(KX)

Chapter 4

Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly, realizing that you too have a Master in heaven.

Prayer and Apostolic Spirit. Persevere in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving;(KY) at the same time, pray for us, too, that God may open a door to us for the word, to speak of the mystery of Christ, for which I am in prison,(KZ) that I may make it clear, as I must speak. Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity.(LA) Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you know how you should respond to each one.

V. Conclusion[gc]

Tychicus and Onesimus. Tychicus,[gd] my beloved brother, trustworthy minister, and fellow slave in the Lord, will tell you all the news of me.(LB) I am sending him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know about us and that he may encourage your hearts, together with Onesimus, a trustworthy and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you about everything here.(LC)

From Paul’s Co-Workers. 10 Aristarchus,[ge] my fellow prisoner, sends you greetings, as does Mark the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have received instructions; if he comes to you, receive him),(LD) 11 and Jesus,[gf] who is called Justus, who are of the circumcision; these alone are my co-workers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me. 12 Epaphras[gg] sends you greetings; he is one of you, a slave of Christ [Jesus], always striving for you in his prayers so that you may be perfect and fully assured in all the will of God.(LE) 13 For I can testify that he works very hard for you and for those in Laodicea[gh] and those in Hierapolis. 14 Luke[gi] the beloved physician sends greetings, as does Demas.(LF)

A Message for the Laodiceans. 15 Give greetings to the brothers in Laodicea and to Nympha and to the church in her house.[gj] 16 And when this letter is read before you, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans, and you yourselves read the one from Laodicea.[gk] 17 And tell Archippus, “See that you fulfill the ministry[gl] that you received in the Lord.”(LG)

18 The greeting is in my own hand,[gm] Paul’s. Remember my chains. Grace be with you.(LH)
