18 Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men were they whom you killed at Tabor?” And they said, “They were like you, each one [a]resembling the son of a king.” 19 And he said, “They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As Yahweh lives, if only you had let them live, I would not kill you.” 20 So he said to Jether his firstborn, “Rise, kill them.” But the youth did not draw his sword, for he was afraid because he was still a youth. 21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Rise up yourself, and smite us; for as the man, so is his might.” (A)So Gideon arose and killed Zebah and Zalmunna and (B)took the crescent ornaments which were on their camels’ necks.
Gideon Makes an Ephod
22 Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us, both you and your son, also your son’s son, for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.” 23 But Gideon said to them, “I will not rule over you, nor shall my son rule over you; (C)Yahweh shall rule over you.” 24 Yet Gideon said to them, “I would [b]make one request of you, that each of you give me [c]an earring from his spoil.” (For they had gold earrings because they were (D)Ishmaelites.) 25 And they said, “We will surely give them.” So they spread out a garment, and every one of them threw an earring there from his spoil. 26 And the weight of the gold earrings that he requested was 1,700 shekels of gold, besides the crescent ornaments and the pendants and the purple robes which were on the kings of Midian, and besides the neck bands that were on their camels’ necks. 27 Then Gideon made it into (E)an ephod and placed it in his city, Ophrah, and all Israel played the harlot with it there, so that it became a snare to Gideon and his household. 28 So Midian was subdued before the sons of Israel, and they did not lift up their heads anymore. And the land was quiet for forty years in the days of Gideon.
The Death and Burial of Gideon
29 Then (F)Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and lived in his own house. 30 Now Gideon had (G)seventy sons who [d]were his direct descendants, for he had many wives. 31 And his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he [e]named him Abimelech. 32 Then Gideon the son of Joash died at a good old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
33 Then it happened, as soon as Gideon was dead, (H)that the sons of Israel turned back and played the harlot with the Baals and made (I)Baal-berith their god. 34 Thus the sons of Israel (J)did not remember Yahweh their God, who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side; 35 (K)nor did they show lovingkindness to the household of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) in accord with all the good that he had done to Israel.
Abimelech Kills His Brothers
9 And (L)Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s [f]relatives and spoke to them and to the whole family of the household of his mother’s father, saying, 2 “Speak, now, in the hearing of all the lords of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you, that (M)seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or that one man rule over you?’ Also, remember that I am (N)your bone and your flesh.” 3 And his mother’s [g]relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the hearing of all the lords of Shechem; and [h]they were inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is (O)our [i]relative.” 4 So they gave him seventy pieces of silver from the house of (P)Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, and they followed him. 5 Then he came to his father’s house at Ophrah and (Q)killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, (R)seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself. 6 Then all the lords of Shechem and all [j]Beth-millo assembled together, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the [k]oak of the pillar which was in Shechem.
7 Then they told Jotham, so he went and stood on the top of (S)Mount Gerizim and lifted his voice and called out. Thus he said to them, “Listen to me, O lords of Shechem, that God may listen to you. 8 The trees surely went forth to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us!’ 9 But the olive tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my fatness, with [l]which God and men are honored, and go to wave over the trees?’ 10 Then the trees said to the fig tree, ‘You come, reign over us!’ 11 But the fig tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my sweetness and my good produce and go to wave over the trees?’ 12 Then the trees said to the vine, ‘You come, reign over us!’ 13 But the vine said to them, ‘Shall I leave my new wine, which makes God and men glad, and go to wave over the trees?’ 14 Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘You come, reign over us!’ 15 And the bramble said to the trees, ‘If in [m]truth you are anointing me as king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, may fire come out from the bramble and consume the cedars of Lebanon.’
16 “So now, if you have dealt in [n]truth and integrity and made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with (T)Jerubbaal and his house and [o]have dealt with him according to the bountiful works of his hands— 17 for my father fought for you and [p]risked his life and delivered you from the hand of Midian; 18 but you have risen against my father’s house today and have killed (U)his sons, seventy men, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, (V)the son of his maidservant, king over the lords of Shechem, because he is your [q]relative— 19 if then you have dealt in [r]truth and integrity with Jerubbaal and his house this day, be glad in Abimelech, and let him also be glad in you. 20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and consume the lords of Shechem and [s]Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the lords of Shechem and from [t]Beth-millo and consume Abimelech.” 21 Then Jotham escaped and fled and went to Beer and remained there because of Abimelech his brother.
44 (A)And it was now about [a](B)the sixth hour, and darkness [b]fell over the whole land until [c]the ninth hour, 45 [d]because the sun was obscured. And (C)the veil of the [e]sanctuary was torn [f]in two. 46 And Jesus, (D)crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, (E)into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Having said this, He breathed His last. 47 (F)Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began (G)praising God, saying, “Certainly this man was righteous.” 48 And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, when they observed what had happened, were returning, [g](H)beating their chests. 49 (I)And all His acquaintances and (J)the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, watching these things.
Jesus Is Buried
50 (K)And behold, a man named Joseph, who was a (L)Council member, a good and righteous man 51 (he had not consented to their counsel and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was (M)waiting for the kingdom of God; 52 this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain. 54 It was [h](N)Preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to [i]begin. 55 Now (O)the women, who had come with Him from Galilee, followed and beheld the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 Then after they returned, they (P)prepared spices and perfumes.
And (Q)on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
Jesus Is Risen!
24 (R)Now on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of (S)the Lord Jesus. 4 And it happened that while they were perplexed about this, behold, (T)two men suddenly (U)stood near them in dazzling clothing, 5 and when the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? 6 He is not here, but He (V)has [j]risen. Remember how He spoke to you (W)while He was still in Galilee, 7 saying that (X)the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” 8 And (Y)they remembered His words, 9 and when they returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now (Z)Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the rest of the women with them were there; they were telling these things to (AA)the apostles. 11 But these words appeared [k]to them as nonsense, and they (AB)were not believing them. 12 But Peter stood up and (AC)ran to the tomb; and stooping to look in, he *saw the linen wrappings [l]only. And he went away (AD)by himself, marveling at what had happened.
Holy Is Yahweh Our God
99 (A)Yahweh reigns, let the peoples tremble;
He (B)sits enthroned above the cherubim, let the earth quake!
2 Yahweh is (C)great in Zion,
And He is (D)exalted above all the peoples.
3 Let them praise Your (E)great and awesome name;
(F)Holy is [a]He.
4 [b]The strength of the King (G)loves [c]justice;
You have established [d](H)equity;
You have (I)done [e]justice and righteousness in Jacob.
5 (J)Exalt Yahweh our God
And (K)worship at the footstool of His feet;
(L)Holy is He.
6 (M)Moses and Aaron were among His (N)priests,
And (O)Samuel was among those who (P)called on His name;
They (Q)would call upon Yahweh and He would answer them.
7 He (R)would speak to them in the pillar of cloud;
They (S)kept His testimonies
And the statute that He gave them.
8 O Yahweh our God, You (T)answered them;
You were a (U)forgiving God to them,
And yet an (V)avenger of their evil deeds.
9 Exalt Yahweh our God
And worship at His holy mountain,
For holy is Yahweh our God.
