Deuteronomy 7-8

Warnings

(A)When the Lord your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, (B)seven nations greater and stronger than you, and when the Lord your God delivers them before you and you [a]defeat them, (C)then you shall [b]utterly destroy them. (D)You shall make no covenant with them (E)and show no favor to them. Furthermore, (F)you shall not intermarry with them; you shall not give your [c]daughters to [d]their sons, nor shall you take [e]their daughters for your [f]sons. For [g]they will turn your [h]sons away from [i]following Me to serve other gods; then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you and (G)He will quickly destroy you. But thus you shall do to them: (H)you shall tear down their altars, and smash their sacred pillars, and hew down their [j]Asherim, and burn their graven images with fire. For you are (I)a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be (J)a people for His [k]own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the [l]earth.

(K)The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the Lord loved you and kept the (L)oath which He swore to your forefathers, (M)the Lord brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of [m]slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God, (N)He is God, (O)the faithful God, (P)who keeps [n]His covenant and [o]His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who (Q)love Him and keep His commandments; 10 but (R)repays those who hate Him to [p]their faces, to destroy [q]them; He will not delay [r]with him who hates Him, He will repay him to his face. 11 Therefore, you shall keep the commandment and the statutes and the judgments which I am commanding you today, to do them.

Promises of God

12 (S)Then it shall come about, because you listen to these judgments and keep and do them, that the Lord your God will keep with you [s]His covenant and [t]His lovingkindness which He swore to your forefathers. 13 He will (T)love you and bless you and (U)multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock, [u]in the land which He swore to your forefathers to give you. 14 You shall be blessed above all peoples; there will be no male or female (V)barren among you or among your cattle. 15 (W)The Lord will remove from you all sickness; and He will not put on you any of the harmful diseases of Egypt which you have known, but He will lay them on all who hate you. 16 You shall consume all the peoples whom the Lord your God will deliver to you; (X)your eye shall not pity them, nor shall you serve their gods, for that would be (Y)a snare to you.

17 “If you should say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I; how can I (Z)dispossess them?’ 18 you shall not be afraid of them; you shall well (AA)remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt: 19 (AB)the great trials which your eyes saw and the signs and the wonders and the mighty hand and the outstretched arm by which the Lord your God brought you out. So shall the Lord your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid. 20 Moreover, the Lord your God will send (AC)the hornet against them, until those who are left and hide themselves from you perish. 21 You shall not dread [v]them, for (AD)the Lord your God is in your midst, (AE)a great and awesome God. 22 (AF)The Lord your God will clear away these nations before you little by little; you will not be able to put an end to them quickly, for the [w]wild beasts would grow too numerous for you. 23 (AG)But the Lord your God will deliver them before you, and will [x]throw them into great confusion until they are destroyed. 24 (AH)He will deliver their kings into your hand so that you will make their name perish from under heaven; (AI)no man will be able to stand before you until you have destroyed them. 25 The graven images of their gods you are to (AJ)burn with fire; you shall (AK)not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, or you will be (AL)snared by it, for it is an (AM)abomination to the Lord your God. 26 You shall not bring an abomination into your house, and like it come under the (AN)ban; you shall utterly detest it and you shall utterly abhor it, for it is something banned.

God’s Gracious Dealings

“All the commandments that I am commanding you today you shall be careful to do, that you (AO)may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the Lord swore to give to your forefathers. (AP)You shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has (AQ)led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, (AR)testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you [y]understand that (AS)man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord. (AT)Your clothing did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years. (AU)Thus you are to know in your heart that the Lord your God was disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son. Therefore, you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to [z]fear Him. For (AV)the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey; a land where you will eat food without scarcity, in which you will not lack anything; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. 10 When (AW)you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land which He has given you.

11 [aa]Beware that you do not (AX)forget the Lord your God by not keeping His commandments and His ordinances and His statutes which I am commanding you today; 12 otherwise, (AY)when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them, 13 and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies, 14 then your heart will become [ab]proud and you will (AZ)forget the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of [ac]slavery. 15 He led you through (BA)the great and terrible wilderness, with its (BB)fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water; He (BC)brought water for you out of the rock of flint. 16 In the wilderness He fed you manna (BD)which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might (BE)test you, to do good for you [ad]in the end. 17 Otherwise, (BF)you may say in your heart, ‘My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.’ 18 But you shall remember the Lord your God, for (BG)it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. 19 It shall come about if you ever forget the Lord your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, (BH)I testify against you today that you will surely perish. 20 Like the nations that the Lord makes to perish before you, so (BI)you shall perish; because you would not listen to the voice of the Lord your God.

Luke 7:36-8:3

36 Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to [a]dine with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 (A)And there was a woman in the city who was a [b]sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume, 38 and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were (B)a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a [c]sinner.”

Parable of Two Debtors

40 And Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he [d]replied, “Say it, Teacher.” 41 “A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred [e](C)denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they (D)were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.” 44 Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you (E)gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You (F)gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet. 46 (G)You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume. 47 For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 Then He said to her, (H)Your sins have been forgiven.” 49 Those who were reclining at the table with Him began to say [f]to themselves, “(I)Who is this man who even forgives sins?” 50 And He said to the woman, (J)Your faith has saved you; (K)go in peace.”

Ministering Women

Soon afterwards, He began going around from one city and village to another, (L)proclaiming and preaching the kingdom of God. The twelve were with Him, and also (M)some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: (N)Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna the wife of Chuza, (O)Herod’s (P)steward, and Susanna, and many others who were contributing to their support out of their private means.

Psalm 69:1-18

A Cry of Distress and Imprecation on Adversaries.

For the choir director; according to [a]Shoshannim. A Psalm of David.

69 Save me, O God,
For the (A)waters have [b]threatened my life.
I have sunk in deep (B)mire, and there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters, and a [c](C)flood overflows me.
I am (D)weary with my crying; my throat is parched;
My (E)eyes fail while I wait for my God.
Those (F)who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head;
Those who would [d]destroy me (G)are powerful, being wrongfully my enemies;
(H)What I did not steal, I then have to restore.

O God, it is You who knows (I)my folly,
And (J)my wrongs are not hidden from You.
May those who wait for You not (K)be ashamed through me, O Lord [e]God of hosts;
May those who seek You not be dishonored through me, O God of Israel,
Because (L)for Your sake I have borne reproach;
(M)Dishonor has covered my face.
I have become (N)estranged [f]from my brothers
And an alien to my mother’s sons.
For (O)zeal for Your house has consumed me,
And (P)the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
10 When I wept (Q)in my soul with fasting,
It became my reproach.
11 When I made (R)sackcloth my clothing,
I became (S)a byword to them.
12 Those who (T)sit in the gate talk about me,
And I am the [g](U)song of the drunkards.

13 But as for me, my prayer is to You, O Lord, (V)at an acceptable time;
O God, in the (W)greatness of Your lovingkindness,
Answer me with [h]Your saving truth.
14 Deliver me from the (X)mire and do not let me sink;
May I be (Y)delivered from [i]my foes and from the [j](Z)deep waters.
15 May the [k](AA)flood of water not overflow me
Nor the deep swallow me up,
Nor the (AB)pit shut its mouth on me.

16 Answer me, O Lord, for (AC)Your lovingkindness is good;
(AD)According to the greatness of Your compassion, (AE)turn to me,
17 And (AF)do not hide Your face from Your servant,
For I am (AG)in distress; answer me quickly.
18 Oh draw near to my soul and (AH)redeem it;
(AI)Ransom me because of my enemies!

Proverbs 12:1

Contrast the Upright and the Wicked

12 Whoever loves [a]discipline loves knowledge,
But he who hates reproof is stupid.
