Bible in 90 Days
14 And he came to his disciples and saw crowds of people about them, and the scribes disputing with them. 15 And straightaway all the people, when they saw Jesus, were moved with wonder, and ran to him and greeted him. 16 And he said to the scribes, What are you disputing with them? 17 A man from the crowd answered and said, Teacher, I have brought my son to you, who has a dumb spirit, 18 and whenever it takes him, it tears him, and he foams and gnashes with his teeth, and collapses. And I spoke to your disciples, to cast it out, but they could not.
19 Jesus answered him and said, O generation without faith, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him to me. 20 And they brought the boy to him. And as soon as the spirit saw him, it tore the boy, and he fell down on the ground, wallowing and foaming. 21 And Jesus asked his father, How long has this been happening to him? And he said, Since childhood. 22 And often it casts him into the fire, and also into the water, to kill him. But if you can do anything, have mercy on us and help us! 23 And Jesus said to him, If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes. 24 And straightaway the father of the child exclaimed with tears, saying, Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!
25 When Jesus saw that the people came running to gather to him, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying to him, Deaf and dumb spirit, I charge you to come out of him, and enter no more into him! 26 And the spirit cried out, and rent him badly, and came out. And the boy was as one dead, insomuch that many said, He is dead. 27 But Jesus caught his hand and lifted him up, and he arose.
28 And when Jesus had entered into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could we not cast him out? 29 And he said to them, This kind can come out no other way but by prayer and fasting.
30 And they left that place, and took their journey through Galilee. But Jesus did not want anyone to know of it, 31 because he was teaching his disciples. And he said to them, The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And after he has been killed, he will arise again on the third day. 32 But they did not comprehend what that saying meant, and were afraid to ask him.
33 And they came to Capernaum. And once he was indoors, he asked them, What was it that you were disputing between yourselves along the way? 34 And they held their peace, for on the road they had been debating among themselves who should be chief. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve to him and said to them, If any man desires to be first, let him be last of all, and servant to all. 36 And he took a child and set him in the midst of them, and took him in his arms and said to them, 37 Whosoever receives any such a child in my name, receives me. And whosoever receives me, receives not me, but him who sent me.
38 John answered him, saying, Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out devils in your name, and we told him not to because he does not follow us. 39 But Jesus said, Do not forbid him. For no one who does a miracle in my name can lightly speak evil of me. 40 Whosoever is not against you, is on your side.
41 And whosoever gives you a cup of water to drink for my name’s sake, because you belong to Christ, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward. 42 But whoever hurts one of these little ones that believe in me, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea. 43 Therefore if your hand causes you to offend, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed than, having two hands, to go into hell, into fire that never shall be quenched, 44 where their worm dies not and the fire never goes out. 45 Likewise, if your foot causes you to offend, cut it off. For it is better for you to go lame into life than, having two feet, to be cast into hell, into fire that never shall be quenched, 46 where their worm dies not and the fire never goes out. 47 So also if your eye causes you to offend, tear it out. It is better for you to go into the kingdom of God with one eye than, having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire, 48 where their worm dies not and the fire never goes out.
49 Every man therefore must be salted with fire. And every sacrifice must be seasoned with salt. 50 Salt is good. But if the salt is unsavoury, what can you salt with it? See that you have salt in yourselves. And have peace among yourselves, one with another.
On divorce. The rich man questions Christ. Of the sons of Zebedee. Bartimaeus the blind man.
10 And he arose from there and went into the borders of Judea, through the region that is beyond the Jordan. And the people resorted to him afresh, and as his custom was, he taught them again. 2 And the Pharisees came and asked him a question, whether it was lawful for a man to put away his wife, in order to prove him. 3 And he answered and said to them, What did Moses tell you to do? 4 And they said, Moses permitted us to write a testimonial of divorce and to put her away.
5 And Jesus answered and said to them, For the hardness of your hearts he wrote this precept for you. 6 But at the first creation, God made them man and woman. 7 And for the sake of this, a man must leave his father and mother and abide by his wife, 8 and the two shall be one flesh. So then they are now not two, but are one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.
10 And in the house, his disciples asked him again about that matter. 11 And he said to them, Whoever puts away his wife and marries another, breaks wedlock to her. 12 And if a woman forsakes her husband and is married to another, she commits adultery.
13 And they brought children to him, for him to touch them. And his disciples rebuked the people who brought them. 14 When Jesus saw that, he was displeased, and said to them, Suffer the children to come to me, and forbid them not. For of such is the kingdom of God. 15 Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child, he shall not enter therein. 16 And he took them up in his arms, and put his hands upon them, and blessed them.
17 And when he had gone out to the road, a man came running, and kneeled to him and asked him, Good Teacher, what should I do so that I may inherit eternal life? 18 Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? There is none good but one, who is God. 19 You know the commandments: do not break matrimony, do not kill, do not steal, bear no false witness, defraud no man, honour your father and mother. 20 He answered and said to him, Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth.
21 Jesus regarded him with favour and said to him, One thing is lacking to you. Go and sell all that you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. And come and follow me, and take up the cross.
22 But the man was downcast with that saying, and went away grieved, for he had great possessions.
23 And Jesus looked round about and said to his disciples, What a hard thing it is for those who have riches to enter into the kingdom of God. 24 And his disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus spoke again and said to them, Children, how hard is it for those who trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God? 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying between themselves, Who then can be saved? 27 Jesus looked upon them and said, With men it is impossible, but not with God. For with God, all things are possible.
28 And Peter began to say to him, Lo, we have left everything and have followed you. 29 Jesus answered and said, Truly I say to you, there is no one who gives up house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake and the gospel’s, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this life: houses and brethren and sisters and mothers and children and lands – with persecutions – and in the world to come, eternal life. 31 But many that are first will be last, and the last, first.
32 And they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus went before them. And they were amazed, and as they followed, were afraid. And Jesus took the twelve again, and began to tell them the things that would happen to him: 33 Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man will be delivered to the high priests and to the scribes. And they will condemn him to death, and will deliver him to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock him, and scourge him, and spit upon him, and kill him. And the third day he will rise again.
35 And then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him, saying, Teacher, we would like you to do for us whatever we ask. 36 He said to them, What would you like me to do for you? 37 They said to him, Grant to us that we may sit one on your right hand, and the other on your left hand, in your glory. 38 But Jesus said to them, You know not what you ask. Can you drink of the cup that I must drink of, and be baptized in the baptism that I must be baptized in? 39 And they said to him, That we can. Jesus said to them, You will drink of the cup that I will drink of, and be baptized with the baptism that I will be baptized in. 40 But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give, but is for them for whom it is prepared.
41 And when the ten heard this, they began to be much displeased with James and John. 42 But Jesus called them to him and said to them, You know that those who are seen to bear rule among the Gentiles reign as lords over them. And those who are great among them exercise authority over them. 43 It shall not be this way among you, but whoever would be great among you shall minister to you, 44 and whoever would be chief shall be servant to all. 45 For even the Son of man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life for the redemption of many.
46 And they came to Jericho. And as he was going out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, Bartimaeus the son of Timeus, who was blind, sat by the side of the high road, begging. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to call out and to say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! 48 And many people admonished him to hold his peace. But he cried the more a great deal, Son of David, have mercy on me!
49 And Jesus stood still and directed that he be called. And they called the blind man, saying to him, Be of good comfort. Rise, he has called you.
50 And he threw away his cloak, and rose and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus spoke and said to him, What do you want me to do for you? The blind man said to him, Teacher, that I could see! 52 Jesus said to him, Go your way; your faith has saved you.
And immediately the man received his sight, and followed Jesus in the road.
Christ rides into Jerusalem. The fig tree dries up. The buyers and sellers are cast out of the temple. The Pharisees question Christ.
11 And when they came near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany beside the Mount of Olives, he sent forth two of his disciples 2 and said to them, Go your ways into the town that is in front of you. And as soon as you have entered into it, you will find a colt tied, on which no man ever sat. Untie him and bring him here. 3 And if anyone asks you why you are doing this, say that the Lord has need of him, and straightaway he will send him here.
4 And they went their way and found a colt tied by the door outside, in a place where two roads met, and they untied him. 5 And some of the people standing there said to them, What are you doing, untying the colt? 6 And they answered just as Jesus had instructed, and the people let them go. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on it, and he sat upon it. 8 And many spread their garments in the way. Others cut down branches of the trees and strew them in the way. 9 And those who went before, and those who followed, cried out, saying, Hosanna! Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the kingdom that comes in the name of him who is Lord of our father David: Hosanna in the highest!
11 And the Lord entered into Jerusalem and into the temple. And when he had looked round about upon everything, and now that evening time was come, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.
12 And on the morrow, when they had left Bethany, he hungered. 13 And afar off he spotted a fig tree in leaf, and went to see whether he might find anything on it. But when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for the time of figs was not yet. 14 And Jesus spoke and said to it, Never may man eat fruit from you hereafter while the world stands. And his disciples heard it.
15 And they came to Jerusalem. And Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out the sellers and buyers in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the stools of those who sold doves, 16 and would not suffer anyone to carry a vessel through the temple. 17 And he taught, saying to them, Is it not written: My house shall be called the house of prayer for all nations? But you have made it a den of thieves! 18 And the scribes and high priests heard this, and sought how to destroy him. For they feared him, because all the people marvelled at his doctrine.
19 And when evening came, he went out of the city. 20 And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. 21 And Peter remembered and said to him, Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered away.
22 And Jesus answered and said to them, Have confidence in God. 23 Truly I say to you that whoever says to this mountain, Take yourself away and cast yourself into the sea, and who does not waver in his heart, but believes that those things which he says will come to pass – whatever he says will be done for him. 24 Therefore I say to you, whatever you ask when you pray, believe that you will have it, and it will be done for you. 25 And when you stand and pray, forgive, if you have anything against any person, so that your Father who is in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.
27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he walked in the temple, there came to him the high priests and the scribes and the elders, 28 and they said to him, By what authority do you do these things? And who gave you this authority, to do these things? 29 Jesus answered and said to them, I will also ask of you a certain thing. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 The baptism of John: was it from heaven, or of men? Answer me.
31 They thought in themselves, saying, If we say from heaven, he will say, Why then did you not believe him? 32 But if we say of men, then we fear the people. (For everyone counted John to be a very prophet.) 33 And they answered and said to Jesus, We don’t know. And Jesus answered and said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
The vineyard is let out. Give to Caesar that which belongs to Caesar. Of the Sadducees and of the doctor of law. Hypocrites must be eschewed. The offering of the poor widow.
12 And he began to speak to them in similitudes: A certain man planted a vineyard, and compassed it about with a hedge, and made a winepress, and built a tower in it. And he let it out on hire to husbandmen, and went into a far country. 2 And when the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, in order to receive from the tenants some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3 And they caught him and beat him, and sent him back empty-handed. 4 And moreover he sent to them another servant, and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him back utterly reviled. 5 And again he sent another, and him they killed; and many others, beating some and killing some.
6 He had yet one son, whom he loved tenderly. Him also he sent to them at the last, saying, They will respect my son. 7 But the tenants said amongst themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours. 8 And they took him and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.
9 What then will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants, and let out the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not read this scripture: The stone which the builders refused is made the chief stone in the corner; 11 this was done by the Lord, and is marvellous in our eyes?
12 And they went about to apprehend him, but they feared the people. For they perceived that he had spoken that similitude against them. And they left him and went their way.
13 And they sent to him certain of the Pharisees, along with Herod’s servants, to take him in his words. 14 And as soon as they arrived, they said to him, Teacher, we know that you are true, and mind no man, for you do not consider the degree of men, but teach the way of God truly. Is it lawful to remit tribute to Caesar, or not? 15 Ought we to give, or ought we not to give?
He understood their simulation and said to them, Why do you bait me? Bring me a denarius so that I may see it. 16 And they brought one. And he said to them, Whose image and superscription is this? And they said to him, Caesar’s. 17 And Jesus answered and said to them, Then give to Caesar that which belongs to Caesar, and to God that which belongs to God. And they marvelled at him.
18 Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him. And they asked him, saying, 19 Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if any man’s brother dies and leaves his wife behind him, and leaves no children, that then his brother should take his wife and raise up seed for his brother. 20 There were seven brethren. The first took a wife, and when he died left no seed behind him. 21 And the second took her, and died also not leaving any seed. And the third likewise. 22 And all seven had her, but left no seed behind them. Last of all, the wife died also. 23 In the resurrection then, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For seven of them had her as wife.
24 Jesus answered and said to them, Are you not therefore deceived, and do not understand the scriptures, nor the power of God? 25 For when they rise again from death, people neither marry nor are married, but are as the angels who are in heaven. 26 And concerning the dead, that they will rise again, have you not read in the book of Moses how in the bush God spoke to him, saying, I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? 27 He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. You are therefore greatly deceived.
28 And there came one of the scribes who had heard them disputing together. He perceived that Jesus had answered them well, and asked him, Which is the first of all the commandments?
29 Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is: Hear, O Israel, the Lord God is one Lord. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.
32 And the scribe said to him, Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth: that there is one God, and that there is none but he. 33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the mind, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbour as oneself, is a greater thing than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.
34 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God.
And after that, no one dared ask him any question.
35 And Jesus spoke and said, teaching in the temple, How is it the scribes say that Christ is the son of David? 36 For David himself, inspired with the Holy Spirit, said, The Lord said to my Lord, sit on my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool. 37 So David himself calls him Lord. By what means then is he David’s son?
And the crowds of people heard him gladly. 38 And he said to them as he taught them, Beware of the scribes, who love to go about in long clothing, and love salutations in the market places, 39 and the chief seats in the synagogues, and to sit in the uppermost places at feasts; 40 and who devour widows’ houses, and that under a colour of long praying. These shall receive greater damnation.
41 Jesus sat across from the treasury and observed how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich cast in much. 42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two small coins worth a pittance. 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, Truly I say to you that this poor widow has cast in more than all the others who have cast into the treasury. 44 For they all gave from their surplus, but she, in her poverty, did cast in all that she had, even all her living.
The destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. The end of the world; the day and the hour is unknown.
13 And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, Teacher, see what stones and what buildings are here! 2 And Jesus answered and said to him, Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.
3 And as he sat on the Mount of Olives across from the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things are going to be fulfilled?
5 And Jesus answered them and began, saying, Take heed, lest anyone deceive you. 6 For many will come in my name saying, I am Christ, and will deceive many.
7 When you hear of war and reports of war, do not be troubled. For such things must be. But the end is not yet. 8 For nation will arise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in all quarters, and famines and troubles. These are the beginning of sorrows.
9 But take heed to yourselves. For they will bring you up before the councils and into the synagogues, and you will be beaten; yea, and will be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached among all nations. 11 But when they lead you and present you, do not be anxious about what you will say, nor prepare ahead. But whatever is given you at that same time, that speak. For it will not be you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.
12 Yea and brother will deliver brother to death, and the father the son; and the children will rise against their fathers and mothers, and will put them to death. 13 And you will be hated by all men for my name’s sake. But whosoever endures to the end, the same shall be saved.
14 Moreover, when you see the abomination that betokens desolation, of which Daniel the prophet has spoken, standing where it ought not, let him who reads, understand. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 And let him who is on the housetop not descend down into the house, neither enter in to fetch anything out of his house. 16 And let him who is in the field not turn back again to those things that he left behind him, to take his clothes with him. 17 Woe shall be then to women that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days. 18 But pray that your flight be not in the winter. 19 For there shall be in those days such tribulation as was not from the beginning of creatures that God created to this time, nor will be again. 20 And if the Lord did not shorten those days, no one would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened those days.
21 And then if anyone says to you, Lo, here is Christ! Lo, he is there! – believe it not. 22 For false Christs will arise, and false prophets, and they will show miracles and wonders, to deceive if it were possible even the elect. 23 But take heed: behold, I have told you all things beforehand.
24 Moreover in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will grow dark, and the moon will not give her light, 25 and the stars of heaven will fall; and the powers which are in heaven shall move. 26 And then will they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then he will send his angels, and will gather together his elect from the four winds, and from one end of the world to the other.
28 Learn from a similitude of the fig tree. When its branches are yet tender and it has brought forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also in like manner, when you see these things come to pass, understand that it is near, even at the doors. 30 Truly I say to you that this generation will not pass till all these things be done.
31 Heaven and earth shall pass, but my words will not pass. 32 But of that day and hour no one knows, no, not the angels who are in heaven, nor the Son himself, but the Father only. 33 Take heed. Watch and pray, for you know not when the time is. 34 It is as a man who has gone into a far country, and has left his house, and given authority to his servants, and to each his work, and instructed the porter to watch.
35 Watch therefore. For you know not when the master of the house will come – whether at evening or midnight, whether at the cock-crowing or in the dawning – 36 lest, if he come suddenly, he should find you sleeping. 37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!
Mary Magdalene anoints Christ. The Passover lamb is eaten. Christ is taken. Peter denies him, with many other things that were demanded of Christ.
14 After two days followed Passover, and the days of sweet bread. And the high priests and the scribes were seeking means to apprehend Jesus by craft and put him to death. 2 But, they said, not in the feast day, lest any uproar arise among the people.
3 When he was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, even as he sat at food, there came a woman having an alabaster jar of anointing oil called nard, which was pure and costly. And she broke the jar and poured it on his head. 4 And there were some who were displeased in themselves and said, Why this waste of oyntment? 5 For it could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor. And they grudged against her.
6 And Jesus said, Let her be in rest. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work on me. 7 For you will have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish, you may do them good. But me you will not have always. 8 She has done what she could: she came beforehand to anoint my body for the burial. 9 Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the whole world, this also that she has done will be told, in remembrance of her.
10 And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went away to the high priests, to betray him to them. 11 When they heard that, they were glad, and promised that they would give him money. And he sought an opportune way to betray him.
12 And the first day of sweet bread, when people offer the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples said to him, Where would you like us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover lamb? 13 And he sent forth two of his disciples and said to them, Go into the city, and there a man will meet you bearing a pitcher of water. Follow him. 14 And wherever he goes in, say to the head of the house, The Teacher asks, Where is the guest chamber where I may eat the Passover lamb with my disciples? 15 And he will show you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.
16 And his disciples went forth, and came to the city, and found things as he had said to them, and made ready the Passover lamb.
17 And in the evening, he came with the twelve. 18 And as they sat at the table and ate, Jesus said, Truly I say to you that one of you who eats with me will betray me. 19 And they began to mourn, and to say to him one by one, Is it I? And another said, Is it I?
20 He answered and said to them, It is one of the twelve, and the same dips with me in the platter. 21 The Son of man goes as it is written of him. But woe is to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed. It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.
22 And as they ate, Jesus took bread, blessed, and broke, and gave to them and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 23 And he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. 25 Truly I say to you, I will drink no more of this fruit of the vine until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
26 And when they had sung praises, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27 And Jesus said to them, All of you will fall away because of me this night. For it is written: I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered. 28 But after I am risen up again, I will go into Galilee ahead of you. 29 But Peter said to him, Even if all were to fall away, yet I would not. 30 And Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you, this day – even this night, before the cock crows twice – you will deny me three times. 31 And Peter spoke more boldly: No; if I must die with you, I will not deny you. Likewise also said all the others.
32 And they came to a place named Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, Sit here, while I go apart and pray. 33 And he took with him Peter, James, and John. And he began to be horrified, and to be in an agony, 34 and said to them, My soul is very heavy, even to the death. You stay here and watch. 35 And he went forward a little, and fell down on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible to you; take away this cup from me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will, be done.
37 And he came and found them sleeping and said to Peter, Simon, are you sleeping? Could not you watch with me one hour? 38 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit is ready, but the flesh is weak.
39 And again he went away and prayed, and spoke the same words. 40 And he returned and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; neither did they know what to answer him. 41 And he came the third time, and said to them, Sleep on now, and take your ease! It is enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise up, let us go. Lo, he who betrays me is at hand.
43 And immediately, while he yet spoke, came Judas, one of the twelve. With him was a large band of people with swords and clubs, sent from the high priests and scribes and elders. 44 And he who betrayed him had arranged a sign, saying, Whomever I kiss, he it is; take him and lead him away warily.
45 And as soon as Judas had come, he went straightaway to Jesus and said to him, Master, Master! and kissed him. 46 And they laid their hands on him and took him. 47 And one of those who stood by drew out a sword and struck a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
48 And Jesus spoke and said to them, You have come out as if to a thief, with swords and with clubs to capture me. 49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not take me. But the scriptures must be fulfilled.
50 And they all forsook him, and ran away. 51 And he had a follower, a certain young man clothed in linen upon the bare. And the young men caught him, 52 but he left his linen cloth and fled from them naked.
53 And they led Jesus away to the highest priest of all, and to him came all the high priests and the elders and the scribes. 54 And Peter followed him a great way off, right into the palace courtyard of the high priest, and sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.
55 And the high priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus, to put him to death, and found none. 56 Yet many bore false witness against him, but their testimonies did not agree together. 57 And certain men arose and brought false witness against him, saying, 58 We heard him say, I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands. 59 But their testimonies did not agree together.
60 And the highest priest stood up amongst them and asked Jesus, saying, Do you answer nothing? How is it that these men bear witness against you? 61 And he held his peace and answered nothing. Again the highest priest asked him and said to him, Are you Christ, the Son of the Blessed? 62 And Jesus said, I am; and you will see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power and coming in the clouds of heaven.
63 Then the highest priest tore his clothes and said, Why do we need any further witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?
And they all gave sentence that he was worthy of death. 65 And some began to spit at him, and to cover his face, and to beat him with fists, and to say to him, Prophesy to us! And the servants struck him on the face.
66 And as Peter was below in the interior courtyard, there came one of the servant girls of the highest priest. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked on him and said, Were you not also with Jesus of Nazareth? 68 And he denied it, saying, I do not know him, or understand what you are saying. And he went out into the porch, and the cock crew. 69 And a maidservant saw him and again began to say to those who stood by, This is one of them. 70 And he denied it again. And soon after, those standing by said again to Peter, Surely you are one of them, for you are from Galilee and your speech is the same. 71 And he began to curse and to swear, saying, I do not know this man of whom you speak. 72 And again the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said to him – Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times – and he began to weep.
The passion of Christ. Of his death and burial.
15 And early in the dawning, the high priests consulted with the elders and the scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus and led him away, and delivered him to Pilate.
2 And Pilate asked him, Are you the king of the Jews? And he answered and said to him, It is as you say. 3 And the high priests accused him of many things. 4 So Pilate asked him again, saying, Do you answer nothing? Look how many things they lay to your charge. 5 But Jesus still answered never a word, so that Pilate marvelled.
6 At that feast it was Pilate’s custom to release to the people, at their pleasure, a prisoner – whomever they desired. 7 And there was one named Barabbas, who lay bound with those who had made insurrection, and in the insurrection had committed murder. 8 And the people called to Pilate and began to ask that he do as usual for them. 9 Pilate answered them and said, Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews? 10 For he knew that the high priests had delivered him out of envy. 11 But the high priests had moved the people to have Barabbas released to them instead.
12 And Pilate answered again and said to them, What will you have me do then with him whom you call the king of the Jews? 13 And they cried again, Crucify him! 14 Pilate said to them, What evil has he done? And they cried the more fervently, Crucify him!
15 And so Pilate, choosing to appease the people, released Barabbas to them, and delivered Jesus, when had scourged him, to be crucified.
16 And the soldiers led him away into the common hall, and called together the whole company. 17 And they clothed him with purple, and they plaited a crown of thorns and crowned him with it, 18 and began to pay mock homage to him: Hail, King of the Jews! 19 And they struck him on the head with a reed, and spat upon him, and kneeled down and worshipped him.
20 And when they had mocked him, they took the purple off him and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him. 21 And they compelled a man who was passing by, called Simon of Cyrene (who was coming out of the field, and was the father of Alexander and Rufus), to bear his cross. 22 And they brought him to a place named Golgotha (which translated is, the place of dead men’s skulls). 23 And they offered him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but he would not receive it.
24 And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots for them, what every man should have. 25 And it was about the third hour, and they crucified him. 26 And the notice of his accusation was written: the king of the jews. 27 And they crucified with him two thieves, one on the right hand and the other on his left. 28 And the scripture was fulfilled which says, He was counted among the wicked.
29 And people who were going by railed on him, wagging their heads and saying, Ah, wretch, who destroys the temple and builds it in three days! 30 Save yourself, and come down from the cross!
31 Likewise also the high priests mocked him among themselves with the scribes, and said, He saved other men; himself he cannot save. 32 Let Christ the King of Israel now descend from the cross, so that we may see and believe.
And those who were crucified with him reviled him also.
33 And when the sixth hour was come, darkness arose over all the earth until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, if it be translated, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
35 And some of the people who were standing by, when they heard that, said, Look, he is calling for Elijah. 36 And one ran and filled a sponge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed and gave him to drink, saying, Let him alone. Let’s see if Elijah will come and take him down.
37 But Jesus cried out with a loud voice and gave up the spirit. 38 And the veil of the temple did tear in two pieces, from the top to the bottom. 39 And when the centurion who stood before Jesus saw that he so cried out and gave up the spirit, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
40 There were also women a good way off beholding him, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Little and of Joses, and Mary Salome, 41 who also, when he was in Galilee, had followed him and ministered to him, and many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.
42 And now when night was come (because it was the Preparation, the day before the Sabbath), 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a noble councillor, who also looked for the kingdom of God. He went in bravely to Pilate and requested the body of Jesus. 44 And Pilate marvelled that he was already dead, and called for the centurion, and asked him if Jesus was already dead. 45 And when he knew the truth from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.
46 And Joseph bought a linen cloth, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone to the opening of the sepulchre. 47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary Joses saw where he was laid.
Christ is risen up again. He appears to the apostles, to whom he commits the preaching of the gospel.
16 And when the Sabbath day was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary Jacobi, and Salome bought sweet spices so that they could come and anoint him. 2 And early in the morning of the day after the Sabbath day, they came to the sepulchre when the sun was risen. 3 And they said to one another, Who will roll the stone away from the opening of the sepulchre for us? 4 But when they looked, they saw that the stone had been rolled away; for it was a very great one.
5 And they went into the sepulchre, and saw a young man clothed in a long white garment sitting on the right side, and they were afraid. 6 But he said to them, Do not be afraid. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen; he is not here. Behold the place where they put him. 7 But go your way and tell his disciples, and especially Peter. He will go before you into Galilee; there you will see him, as he said to you.
8 And they went out quickly and fled from the sepulchre. For they trembled and were amazed. And they did not say anything to anyone, because they were afraid.
9 After Jesus had risen on the day after the Sabbath day, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. 10 And she went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. 11 And though they heard that he was alive and he had appeared to her, yet they did not believe it.
12 After that, he appeared to two of them as a stranger when they were walking and going into the country. 13 And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either.
14 After that, he appeared to the eleven as they sat at food, and cast in their teeth their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they would not believe those who had seen him after his resurrection. 15 And he said to them, Go into all the world, and preach the glad tidings to all creatures. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be damned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: in my name they will cast out devils, and will speak with new tongues, 18 and will kill serpents. And if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them. They will lay their hands on the sick and they will recover.
19 So then, when the Lord had spoken to them, he was received into heaven and sat down on the right hand of God. 20 And they went forth and preached everywhere. And the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word with miracles that followed.
The end of the gospel
of St Mark.
The conception and birth of John the Baptist. The conception of Christ. The thankful songs of Mary and Zacharias.
1 Since many have taken in hand to compile an account of those things that are known for certain among us, 2 as told to us by those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning, and ministered at the doing of them, 3 I determined also that, as soon as I had searched out diligently all things from the beginning, then I would write to you, good Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of those things of which you are informed.
5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the shift of Abijah. And his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 Both were perfect before God, and walked in all the laws and observances of the Lord, and no man could find fault with them. 7 And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were well stricken in age.
8 And it came to pass as he executed the priest’s office before God, when his shift came 9 according to the custom of the priest’s office, the lot fell to him to burn incense. And he went into the temple of the Lord, 10 and the whole host of the people were outside in prayer while the incense was a-burning. 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was startled, and fear came on him.
13 And the angel said to him, Fear not, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard. And your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. And he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even in his mother’s womb. 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to their Lord God. 17 And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the unbelievers to the wisdom of the just men: to make the people ready for the Lord.
18 And Zacharias said to the angel, How may I be sure of this, seeing that I am old, and my wife well stricken in years?
19 And the angel answered and said to him, I am Gabriel who stands in the presence of God, and have been sent to speak to you and to show you these glad tidings. 20 And behold, you shall be dumb and not able to speak until the time that these things are performed, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their season.
21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and wondered that he was so long in the temple. 22 And when he came out, he could not speak to them, whereby they perceived that he had seen some vision in the temple. And he gestured to them and remained speechless.
23 And eventually, as soon as the time of his ministration was up, he departed home to his own house. 24 And after those days, his wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, 25 Thus has God dealt with me in the days when he looked on me, to take from me the disgrace that I suffered among men.
26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And the angel went in to her and said, Hail, thou full of grace! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.
29 When she saw him, she was bewildered at his words, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this could be. 30 And the angel said to her, Fear not, Mary, for you have found grace with God. 31 Lo, you shall conceive in your womb, and shall bear a son, and shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest. And the Lord God will give to him the seat of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom shall be no end.
34 Then said Mary to the angel, How will this be, seeing I do not know a man?
35 And the angel answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you. Therefore also, that holy thing which will be born of you will be called the Son of God. 36 And behold: your cousin Elizabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age. And this is her sixth month, though she be called barren. 37 For with God, nothing is impossible.
38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaiden of the Lord! Be it unto me even as you have said.
And the angel departed from her.
39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the mountains with haste, into a town of Judea, 40 and entered into the house of Zacharias, and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And it happened, as Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe sprang in her belly. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 and cried out with a loud voice and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And how does it happen that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For lo, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe sprang in my belly for joy. 45 And blessed are you who believed, for those things will be performed that were told you from the Lord.
46 And Mary said, My soul does magnify the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my saviour. 48 For he has looked on the poor degree of his handmaiden. Behold, now from henceforth all generations will call me blessed. 49 For he who is mighty has done great things unto me, and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is on them who fear him, throughout all generations. 51 He shows strength with his arm. He scatters those who are proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52 He puts down the mighty from their seats and exalts those of low degree. 53 He fills the hungry with good things and sends the rich away empty. 54 He remembers mercy and helps his servant Israel, 55 even as he promised to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever.
56 And Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months, and returned again to her own house.
57 Elizabeth’s time came to be delivered, and she brought forth a son. 58 And her neighbours and her relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy upon her, and they rejoiced with her.
59 And when it was the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and were calling him by the name Zacharias, after his father. 60 However his mother spoke and said, Not so, but he shall be called John. 61 And they said to her, There is no one in your family called by this name.
62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. 63 And he asked for writing tablets and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they all marvelled. 64 And Zacharias’ mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue also, and he spoke, lauding God.
65 And awe came on all those who dwelt near to them. And also these stories were spread abroad throughout all the hill country of Judea, 66 and everyone who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child will this be? And the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 And his father, Zacharias, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, 68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people. 69 And he has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, 70 just as he promised by the mouth of his holy prophets, who have been since the world began: 71 that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hands of all who hate us, 72 to fulfil the mercy promised to our fathers, to remember his holy covenant, 73 and to perform the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, 74 to give us, so that we, delivered out of the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear all the days of our life, 75 in such holiness and righteousness as are accepted before him.
76 And thou, child, shall be called the prophet of the Highest. For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways, 77 and to give knowledge of salvation to his people for the remission of sins, 78 through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the Dayspring from on high has visited us, 79 to give light to those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and was out in the wilderness till the day came when he was to show himself to the Israelites.
