²⁰ And they watched him, and sent forth spies who would pretend to be sincere, to take him in his words, and to deliver him to the power and authority of the governor. ²¹ And they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that you say and teach right, and do not consider any man’s degree, but teach the way of God truly. ²² Is it lawful for us to pay tribute to Caesar, or no?

²³ He perceived their craftiness and said to them, Why do you bait me? ²⁴ Show me a denarius. Whose image and superscription does it have?

They answered and said, Caesar’s.

²⁵ And he said to them, Give then to Caesar that which belongs to Caesar, and to God that which belongs to God.

²⁶ And they could not reprove his saying before the people. But they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

²⁷ Then there came to him certain of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection. ²⁸ And they asked him, saying, Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if any man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no issue, then his brother should take his wife and raise up seed for his brother. ²⁹ There were seven brethren, and the first took a wife, and died without children. ³⁰ And the second took the wife, but he died childless. ³¹ And the third took her, and so on likewise the rest of the seven, leaving no children behind them, and died. ³² Last of all, the woman died also. ³³ Now at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the brothers? For seven had her as wife.

³⁴ Jesus answered and said to them, The children of this world marry and are married, ³⁵ but those who will be made worthy to enjoy that world, and the resurrection from death, neither marry, nor are married, ³⁶ nor yet can die any more. For they are like the angels, and are the sons of God inasmuch as they are the children of the resurrection. ³⁷ And that the dead shall rise again, even Moses signified in his account of the bush when he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. ³⁸ For he is not the God of the dead, but of the living. For all live in him.

³⁹ Then certain of the Pharisees answered and said, Teacher, you have well said. ⁴⁰ And after that they dared not ask him any question at all.

⁴¹ Then he said to them, How is it they say that Christ is David’s son? ⁴² And David himself says in the book of the Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, ⁴³ till I make your enemies your footstool. ⁴⁴ Seeing David calls him Lord, how is he then his son?

⁴⁵ Then, in the hearing of all the people, Jesus said to his disciples, ⁴⁶ Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long clothing, and love greetings in the markets, the highest seats in the synagogues, and the places of honour at feasts; ⁴⁷ who devour widows’ houses, and that under a colour of long praying. The same shall receive greater damnation.

Christ commends the poor widow. He tells of the destruction of Jerusalem, of false teachers, of the signs and troubles to come, of the end of the world, and of his own coming.

21 As he looked on, he saw the rich, how they cast their offerings into the treasury. ² And he saw also a certain poor widow who cast in two small coins, ³ and he said, Of a truth I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. ⁴ For they all have added to the offering to God out of their surplus, but she, of her penury, has cast in all the substance that she had.

⁵ When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and jewels, Jesus said, ⁶ The days will come when of these things that you see, there will not be left stone upon stone that shall not be thrown down. ⁷ And they asked him, saying, Teacher, when will these things be? And what sign will there be when such things are about to happen?

⁸ And he said, Take heed that you be not deceived. For many will come in my name, saying, I am he. And the time draws near. You must not follow them therefore. ⁹ But when you hear of war and dissension, do not be afraid. For these things must come first. But the end will not follow immediately.

¹⁰ Then he said to them, Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. ¹¹ And great earthquakes will be in all quarters, and hunger and pestilence, and fearful things. And there will be great signs from heaven. ¹² But before all these, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and into prison, and will bring you before kings and rulers for my name’s sake. ¹³ And this will happen to you for a testimony.

¹⁴ Let it therefore stick fast in your hearts not once to concern yourselves beforehand what to answer, ¹⁵ for I will give you a mouth and wisdom against which none of your adversaries will be able to speak or resist.

¹⁶ Yea and you will be betrayed by your fathers and mothers, and by your brethren and kinsmen and friends, and some of you they will put to death. ¹⁷ And you will be hated by all men for my name’s sake. ¹⁸ Yet not one hair of your heads shall perish. ¹⁹ With your patience possess your souls.

²⁰ And when you see Jerusalem besieged with a host, then understand that its desolation is near. ²¹ Then let the people who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are in the city get out. And let not those who are in other countries enter in. ²² For these are the days of vengeance, to fulfil all the things that are written. ²³ But woe will be to women who are with child and to those who give suck in those days, for there will be great trouble in the land, and wrath over all this people. ²⁴ And they will fall on the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trodden under foot by the Gentiles, until the time of the Gentiles is fulfilled.

²⁵ And there will be signs in the sun and in the moon and in the stars, and in the earth the people will be in such perplexity that they will not know which way to turn. The sea and the waters will roar, ²⁶ and men’s hearts will fail them for fear, and for the dread of those things which shall come on the earth. For the powers of heaven shall move. ²⁷ And then shall they see the Son of man come in a cloud, with power and great glory. ²⁸ When these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads, for your redemption draws near.

²⁹ And he told them a similitude: Consider the fig tree, and all other trees. ³⁰ When they shoot forth their buds, you see and can tell for your own selves that summer is then nigh at hand. ³¹ So likewise, when you see these things come to pass, understand that the kingdom of God is near. ³² Truly I say to you, this generation shall not pass till all be fulfilled. ³³ Heaven and earth shall pass, but my words shall not pass.

³⁴ Take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be overcome with excess of eating, and drunkenness, and worldly cares, and that day come on you unawares. ³⁵ For as a snare shall it come upon all who sit on the face of the earth. ³⁶ Watch therefore continually, and pray that you may obtain grace to escape all this that is to come, and that you may stand before the Son of man.

³⁷ In the daytime he taught in the temple, and at night he went out and stayed on the Mount of Olives. ³⁸ And all the people came to him in the morning in the temple, to hear him.

Christ is betrayed. They eat the Passover lamb. The institution of the sacrament. They dispute who should be greatest; he reproves them. He prays three times upon the mount. They seize him and bring him to the high priest’s house. Peter denies him three times, and they bring Jesus before the council.

22 The feast of sweet bread drew near, which is called the Passover. ² And the high priests and scribes were seeking how to kill Jesus, but they feared the people. ³ Then Satan entered into Judas, whose surname was Iscariot (who was of the number of the twelve), ⁴ and he went his way and communed with the high priests and officers, how he might betray Jesus to them. ⁵ And they were glad, and promised to give him money. ⁶ And he accepted, and sought an opportunity to betray Jesus to them when the people were away.

⁷ Then came the day of sweet bread, when of necessity the Passover lamb must be offered. ⁸ And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare for us the Passover lamb so that we may eat. ⁹ They said to him, Where would you like us to prepare it? ¹⁰ And he said to them, When you have entered into the city, there a man bearing a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him into the same house that he enters in, ¹¹ and say to the head of the house, The Master says to you, where is the guest chamber, where I may eat my Passover lamb with my disciples? ¹² And he will show you a large upper room furnished. There make ready.

¹³ And they went and found things as he had said to them, and made ready the Passover lamb.

¹⁴ And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. ¹⁵ And he said to them, I have inwardly desired to eat this Passover lamb with you before I suffer. ¹⁶ For I say to you, henceforth I will not eat of it any more until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God. ¹⁷ And he took the cup and gave thanks and said, Take this, and divide it among you. ¹⁸ For I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God has come.

¹⁹ And he took bread, gave thanks, and gave to them, saying, This is my body, which is given for you. This do in the remembrance of me. ²⁰ Likewise also, when they had supped, he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which shall be shed for you. ²¹ Yet behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. ²² And the Son of man goes as it is appointed; but woe be to that man by whom he is betrayed.

²³ And they began to enquire among themselves which of them it could be that would do that. 

²⁴ And there was a dispute among them, which of them should be taken for the greatest. ²⁵ And he said to them, The kings of the Gentiles reign over them, and those who bear rule over them are called gracious lords. ²⁶ But you shall not be like this. Rather, he who is greatest among you shall be as the youngest, and he who is chief shall be as the servant. ²⁷ For who is greater: he who sits at food, or he that serves? Is it not he who sits at food? But I am among you as he that serves. ²⁸ And you are those who have stayed with me in my trials. ²⁹ And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father has appointed to me, ³⁰ so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit upon seats, and judge the twelve tribes of Israel.

³¹ And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold: Satan has desired you all, to sift you like wheat. ³² But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. And when you have turned back again, strengthen your brethren. ³³ And Peter said to him, Lord, I am ready to go with you into prison, and to death. ³⁴ And he said, I tell you, Peter, the cock will not crow this day till you have three times denied that you knew me.

³⁵ And he said to them, When I sent you out without wallet or bag or shoes, did you lack anything? And they said, No. ³⁶ And he said to them, But now, let him who has a wallet take it up, and likewise his bag. And he who has no sword, let him sell his coat and buy one. ³⁷ For I say to you that that which is written must yet be performed in me: Even with the wicked was he numbered. For those things which are written of me have their fulfilment.

³⁸ And they said, Lord, see, here are two swords.

And he said to them, It is enough.

³⁹ And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of  Olives. And the disciples followed him. ⁴⁰ And when he came to the place, he said to them, Pray, lest you fall into temptation. ⁴¹ And he went apart by himself, about a stone’s throw from them, and kneeled down and prayed, saying, ⁴² Father, if you will, withdraw this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours be fulfilled.

⁴³ And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, comforting him. ⁴⁴ And he was in an agony, and prayed somewhat longer. And his sweat was like drops of blood trickling down to the ground.

⁴⁵ And he rose up from prayer and came to his disciples, and found them sleeping for sorrow, ⁴⁶ and said to them, Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you fall into temptation.

⁴⁷ While he was yet speaking, behold, there came a band of men, and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. And he pressed near to Jesus to kiss him. ⁴⁸ And Jesus said to him, Judas, do you betray the Son of man with a kiss?

⁴⁹ When those who were with Jesus saw what would follow, they said to him, Lord, shall we smite with swords? ⁵⁰ And one of them struck a servant of the most high priest, and cut off his right ear. ⁵¹ But Jesus answered and said, Let it come to this. And he touched the servant’s ear and healed him.

⁵² Then Jesus said to the high priests and officers of the temple, and the elders who had approached him, Have you come out as if to a thief, with swords and clubs? ⁵³ When I was daily with you in the temple, you did not stretch forth hands against me. But this is even your very hour, and the power of darkness.

⁵⁴ Then they took him and led him, and brought him to the home of the high priest. And Peter followed afar off.

⁵⁵ When they had kindled a fire in the centre courtyard of the palace and were sitting together, Peter also sat down among them. ⁵⁶ And one of the servant girls saw him as he sat by the fire, and took a good look at him and said, This man was also with him. ⁵⁷ Then he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. ⁵⁸ And after a little while another saw him and said, You are also one of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not. ⁵⁹ And about the space of an hour afterwards, another affirmed, saying, Surely this fellow was with him, for he is from Galilee. ⁶⁰ And Peter said, Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.

And immediately, while he yet spoke, the cock crew. ⁶¹ And the Lord turned back and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the words of the Lord, how he said to him, Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times. ⁶² And Peter went out and wept bitterly.

⁶³ And the men that stood about Jesus mocked him and beat him, ⁶⁴ and blindfolded him, and struck his face. And they asked him, saying, Prophesy! Who it is that hit you? ⁶⁵ And they said many other things despitefully against him.

⁶⁶ And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the high priests and scribes came together, and they led him into their council, saying, ⁶⁷ Are you the very Christ? Tell us.

And he said to them, If I tell you, you will not believe. ⁶⁸ And also if I ask you, you will not answer me or let me go. ⁶⁹ Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.

⁷⁰ Then they all said, Are you then the Son of God?

He said to them, As you say, I am.

⁷¹ Then they said, Why do we need any further testimony? We ourselves have heard from his own mouth.

Jesus is brought before Pilate and Herod. The women make lamentation for him. He prays for his enemies, forgives the thief upon his right hand, and dies on the cross and is buried.

23 And the whole number of them arose, and led Jesus to Pilate. ² And they began to accuse him, saying, We have found his fellow upsetting the people, and forbidding to pay tribute to Caesar, saying that he is Christ, a king. ³ And Pilate questioned him, saying, Are you the king of the Jews? He answered him and said, It is as you say.

⁴ Then Pilate said to the high priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man. ⁵ But they were all the more fierce, saying, He stirs up the people, teaching throughout Judea, beginning at Galilee, and even to this place.

⁶ When Pilate heard mention of Galilee, he asked whether the man was from Galilee. ⁷ And as soon as he knew he was of Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also at Jerusalem in those days.

⁸ And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad. He had desired to see him for a long time, because he had heard many things about him, and trusted to see some miracle done by him. ⁹ Then he questioned him concerning many things, but Jesus answered him not one word. ¹⁰ The high priests and scribes stood forth and accused him vehemently. ¹¹ And Herod with his men of war derided him and mocked him, and arrayed him in white, and sent him again to Pilate.

¹² And that same day, Pilate and Herod were brought together as friends. For before, they were at variance.

¹³ And Pilate called together the high priests, the rulers, and the people, ¹⁴ and said to them, You have brought this man to me as one who incited uprising among the people. But I have examined him before you, and have found no fault in this man concerning those things that you accuse him of. ¹⁵ No, nor did Herod; for I sent you to him, and lo, nothing worthy of death was determined against him. ¹⁶ I will therefore chastise him and let him go. ¹⁷ (For custom constrained Pilate to release one prisoner to them at that feast.)

¹⁸ And all the people cried out at once, saying, Away with him, and release Barabbas to us! ¹⁹ (who for insurrection made in the city and for murder had been cast into prison).

²⁰ Pilate spoke again to them, wanting to let Jesus go free. ²¹ But they shouted, saying, Crucify him! Crucify him!

²² He said to them the third time, What evil has he done? I find no cause of death in him. I will therefore chastise him and release him.

²³ But they called with loud voices for him to be crucified.

And the voice of the people and of the high priests prevailed, ²⁴ and Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required, ²⁵ and released to them the one who for insurrection and murder had been cast into prison, whom they desired, and delivered Jesus to do with him what they would. ²⁶ And as they led him away, they caught one Simon of Cyrene coming out of the field, and on him they laid the cross, to bear it after Jesus.

²⁷ And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which women bewailed and lamented him. ²⁸ But Jesus turned back to them and said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. ²⁹ For behold, the days will come when men will say, Happy are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the paps that never gave suck. ³⁰ Then will they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us! and to the hills, Cover us! ³¹ For if they do this to a green tree, what shall be done to the dry?

³² And there were two evil-doers led with him to be slain. ³³ And when they came to the place that is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the evil-doers also, one on the right hand and the other on the left. ³⁴ Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

And they divided up his garments and cast lots for them. ³⁵ And the people stood and looked on. And the leaders mocked him with them, saying, He helped other men; let him help himself, if he is Christ, the chosen of God. ³⁶ The soldiers also mocked him, and came and gave him vinegar, ³⁷ and said, If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself. ³⁸ And a superscription was written over him in Greek, in Latin, and Hebrew: this is the king of the jews.

³⁹ And one of the evil-doers who hung there railed on him, saying, If you are the Christ, save yourself and us. ⁴⁰ But the other answered and rebuked him, saying, Do you not fear God, seeing that you are under the same sentence? ⁴¹ We are rightly punished, for we receive according to our deeds, but this man has done nothing amiss. ⁴² And he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom. ⁴³ And Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you, today you shall be with me in Paradise.

⁴⁴ And it was about the sixth hour. And there came a darkness over all the land until the ninth hour, ⁴⁵ and the sun was darkened. And the veil of the temple did tear, right through the middle. ⁴⁶ And Jesus cried with a great voice and said, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. And when he had thus spoken, he gave up the spirit.

⁴⁷ When the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, Surely this was a just man. ⁴⁸ And all the people who came together to that sight, beholding the things that were done, smote their breasts and returned home. ⁴⁹ And all those who knew him, and the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood afar off beholding these things.

⁵⁰ And there was a man named Joseph, a member of the council, and he was a good man and just. ⁵¹ He had not consented to their counsel and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, and he was also waiting for the kingdom of God. ⁵² He went to Pilate and requested the body of Jesus, ⁵³ and took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb hewn out in stone, in which no man had ever before been laid. ⁵⁴ And that day was the day of preparation; and the Sabbath drew on.

⁵⁵ The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed after, and saw the sepulchre and how his body was laid. ⁵⁶ And they returned and prepared spices and oyntments, but rested on the Sabbath day according to the commandment.

The women come to the grave. Christ appears to the two disciples on their way to Emmaus, stands in the midst of his disciples, opens their understanding in the scriptures, gives them a charge, and ascends up to heaven.

24 On the morrow after the Sabbath, early in the morning, the women went to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared and other women with them. ² And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre, ³ and went in, but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. ⁴ And it happened as they wondered at this, behold, two men stood by them in shining vestures.

⁵ And as the women became afraid and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said to them, Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen. ⁶ Remember how he spoke to you when he was yet with you in Galilee, ⁷ saying that the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and the third day rise again?

⁸ And they remembered his words, ⁹ and returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. ¹⁰ It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary Jacobi, and others that were with them, who told these things to the apostles. ¹¹ But their words seemed to them like vain things, and they did not believe them.

¹² Then Peter arose and ran to the sepulchre, and stooped in and saw the linen cloths laid by themselves. And he departed, wondering in himself at that which had happened.

¹³ And behold, two of them set out that same day for a town called Emmaus, which was about sixty furlongs from Jerusalem, ¹⁴ and they talked together about all these things that had happened. ¹⁵ And it so was, as they conversed together and discussed, that Jesus himself drew near and went alongside them. ¹⁶ But their eyes were held, so they could not know him. ¹⁷ And he said to them, What sort of conversations are these that you are having with each other as you walk and are sad?

¹⁸ And the one named Cleopas answered and said to him, Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem, and do not know about the things that have happened there in these days?

¹⁹ Jesus said to them, What things?

And they said to him, Of Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, ²⁰ and how the high priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. ²¹ But we trusted that it was he who would deliver Israel. And regarding all these things, today is just the third day since they happened. ²² Yea, and also certain women of our company have us mystified. They went early to the sepulchre, ²³ but did not find his body, and came saying that they had seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. ²⁴ And some of those who were with us went their way to the sepulchre and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him.

²⁵ And he said to them, O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! ²⁶ Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory?

²⁷ And he began at Moses and at all the prophets, and interpreted to them all the scriptures that were written about him. ²⁸ And they drew near the town they were headed to, and Jesus made as though he would have gone further. ²⁹ But they constrained him, saying, Stay with us, for it is drawing towards night and the day is far past. And he went in to stay with them.

³⁰ And it came to pass, as he sat at food with them, he took bread, blessed it, broke, and gave to them. ³¹ And their eyes were opened and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. ³² And they said between themselves, Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked with us along the road and as he opened to us the scriptures?

³³ And they rose up the same hour and returned again to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them, ³⁴ who said, The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!

³⁵ And the two told what things had happened along the road, and how they knew him in the breaking of bread.

³⁶ As they were thus speaking, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them and said to them, Peace be with you. ³⁷ And they were startled and afraid, supposing they saw a spirit. ³⁸ And he said to them, Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? ³⁹ Behold my hands and my feet, that it is even I myself. Handle me and see. For spirits do not have flesh and bones, as you see me to have.

⁴⁰ And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and his feet. ⁴¹ And while they still could not believe for joy and wonderment, he said to them, Have you any food here? ⁴² And they gave him a piece of broiled fish and some honeycomb. ⁴³ And he took it and ate it before them.

⁴⁴ And he said to them, These are the things that I told to you while I was still with you: that all must be fulfilled that was written about me in the law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms.

⁴⁵ Then he opened their wits to understand the scriptures, ⁴⁶ and said to them, Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for Christ to suffer, and to rise again from death the third day, ⁴⁷ and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, and must begin at Jerusalem. ⁴⁸ And you are witnesses of these things. ⁴⁹ And behold, I will send the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.

⁵⁰ And he led them out into Bethany, and lifted up his hands and blessed them. ⁵¹ And it came to pass, as he blessed them, he departed from them and was carried up into heaven.

⁵² And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, ⁵³ and were continually in the temple, praising and lauding God.

⁶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. ⁷ This man came as a witness to bear witness of the light, so that all through him might believe. ⁸ He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of the light ⁹ that was the true light, who lights all men that come into the world. ¹⁰ He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and yet the world knew him not.

¹¹ He came among his own, and his own received him not. ¹² But as many as received him, to them he gave power to be the children of God, in that they believed on his name – ¹³ who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor yet of the will of man, but of God.

¹⁴ And the word was made flesh and dwelt among us. And we saw the glory of it, as the glory of the only begotten Son of the Father, which word was full of grace and truth. ¹⁵ John bore witness of him and cried out, saying, This was he of whom I spoke, who, though he came after me, went before me, because he was before me. ¹⁶ And of his fullness we have all received, even grace for grace. ¹⁷ For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. ¹⁸ No man has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.

¹⁹ And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you? ²⁰ He acknowledged, and did not deny but said plainly, I am not the Christ.

²¹ And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah?

And he said, I am not.

Are you a prophet?

And he answered, No.

²² Then said they to him, Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us: what do you say about yourself?

²³ He said, I am the voice of a crier in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord! as the prophet Isaiah said.

²⁴ And those who were sent were of the Pharisees. ²⁵ And they asked him and said to him, Why do you baptize then, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor a prophet?

²⁶ John answered them, saying, I baptize with water, but one is come among you whom you do not know. ²⁷ He it is that comes after me, who was before me, whose shoe latchet I am not worthy to loose.

²⁸ These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John did baptize.

²⁹ The next day, John saw Jesus coming to him and said, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! ³⁰ This is he of whom I said, after me comes a man who went before me, because he was before me. ³¹ And I did not know him. But in order that he should be declared to Israel, I have come baptizing with water.

³² And John bore witness, saying, I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove and rest upon him. ³³ And I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize in water, the same said to me, Upon whom you see the Spirit descend and remain still on him, the same is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. ³⁴ And I saw and bore witness that this is the Son of God.

³⁵ The next day after, John was standing again with two of his disciples. ³⁶ And he saw Jesus as he walked by and said, Behold the Lamb of God! ³⁷ And the two disciples heard him speak, and followed Jesus.

³⁸ And Jesus turned about and saw them following and said to them, What are you seeking? They said to him, Rabbi (which means, Teacher), where are you staying? ³⁹ He said to them, Come and see.

They went and saw where he was lodging, and stayed with him that day. For it was about the tenth hour.

⁴⁰ One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. ⁴¹ He found his brother Simon first and said to him, We have found the Messiah! (which translated is, the Anointed). ⁴² And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus regarded him and said, You are Simon, the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas (which translated is, a rock).

⁴³ The day following, Jesus decided to go into Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, Follow me. ⁴⁴ Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter. ⁴⁵ And Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him of whom Moses in the law and the prophets did write: Jesus, the son of Joseph of Nazareth. ⁴⁶ And Nathanael said to him, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see.

⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him and said of him, Behold a right Israelite, in whom there is no guile. ⁴⁸ Nathanael said to him, Where did you know me? Jesus answered and said to him, Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you. ⁴⁹ Nathanael answered and said to him, Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the king of Israel!

⁵⁰ Jesus answered and said to him, Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, you believe. You will see greater things than these.

⁵¹ And he said to him, Truly truly I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending over the Son of man.

Christ turns the water into wine, and drives the buyers and sellers out of the temple.

2 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana, a village of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. ² And Jesus was invited also, and his disciples, to the marriage. ³ And when the wine failed, Jesus’ mother said to him, They have no wine. ⁴ Jesus said to her, Woman, what have I to do with you? My hour is not yet come. ⁵ And his mother said to the servants, Whatever he says to you, do it.

⁶ And there were standing there six waterpots of stone, for the purification rites of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. ⁷ And Jesus said to them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. ⁸ And he said to them, Draw some out now, and bring it to the master of the feast. And they brought it.

⁹ When the master of the feast tasted the water that was turned to wine, and did not know where it was from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), he called the bridegroom ¹⁰ and said to him, All men at the beginning set out good wine, and when people have drunk, then that which is worse. But you have kept back the good wine until now.

¹¹ This beginning of miracles Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and showed his glory, and his disciples believed on him. ¹² After that, he descended into Capernaum with his mother and his brethren and his disciples, but continued not many days there.

¹³ And the Jews’ Passover was near at hand. And Jesus went up to Jerusalem, ¹⁴ and found sitting in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money-changers. ¹⁵ And he made a scourge of small cords and drove them all out of the temple with the sheep and oxen, and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables, ¹⁶ and said to those who sold doves, Take these things away from here, and do not make my Father’s house a house of merchandise! ¹⁷ And his disciples remembered that it was written: The zeal of your house has consumed me.

¹⁸ Then the Jews said to him, What sign can you show to us, seeing that you do these things? ¹⁹ Jesus answered and said to them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will rear it up again.

²⁰ Then the Jews said, This temple was forty-six years in building, and will you rear it up in three days?

²¹ But he was speaking of the temple of his body. ²² As soon therefore as he was risen up again from death, his disciples remembered that he had said this. And they believed the scripture, and the words that Jesus had spoken.

²³ When he was at Jerusalem, at Passover in the feast, many believed on his name when they saw the miracles that he did. ²⁴ But Jesus did not put himself in their hands, ²⁵ because he knew all men, and needed not that anyone should testify of man. For he knew what was in man.

The conversation of Christ with Nicodemus. The teaching and baptism of John, and what witness he bears of Christ.

3 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler among the Jews. ² He came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God. For no man could do such miracles as you do unless God were with him.

³ Jesus answered and said to him, Truly truly I say to you, unless a man be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

⁴ Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter into his mother’s womb and be born again?

⁵ Jesus answered, Truly truly I say to you, unless a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. ⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. ⁷ Marvel not that I said to you, you must be born anew. ⁸ The wind blows where it will, and you hear its sound, but cannot tell from whence it comes and where it goes. That is how it is with everyone that is born of the Spirit.

⁹ And Nicodemus answered and said to him, How can these things be?

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to him, Are you a teacher in Israel, and do not know these things? ¹¹ Truly truly I say to you, we speak what we know and testify what we have seen, and you people do not receive our witness. ¹² If when I tell you all earthly things, you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you of heavenly things? ¹³ And no man ascends up to heaven but he who came down from heaven; that is to say, the Son of man who is in heaven. ¹⁴ And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up, ¹⁵ so that no one who believes in him will perish, but will have eternal life.

¹⁶ For God so loves the world that he has given his only Son, so that none who believe in him should perish, but should have everlasting life. ¹⁷ For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but so that the world through him could be saved. ¹⁸ Whoever believes on him shall not be condemned. But whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he does not believe in the name of the only Son of God. ¹⁹ And this is the condemnation: that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness more than light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light lest his deeds should be reproved. ²¹ But whoever does truth comes to the light, so that his deeds may be known, that they are wrought in God.

²² After these things, Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and there he spent time with them and baptized. ²³ And John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there, and people came and were baptized. ²⁴ For John had not yet been cast into prison.

²⁵ And there arose a question between John’s disciples and the Jews about purifying. ²⁶ And they came to John and said to him, Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, of whom you bear witness, behold, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.

²⁷ John answered and said, A man can receive nothing at all unless it is given to him from heaven. ²⁸ You yourselves are witnesses that I said I am not the Christ, but have been sent before him. ²⁹ He who has the bride is the bridegroom. But the friend of the bridegroom, who stands by and hears him, rejoices greatly to hear the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this my joy is fulfilled. ³⁰ He must increase in renown, and I must decrease.

³¹ He who comes from on high is above all. He who is of the earth is earthly, and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all, ³² and what he has seen and heard, that he testifies; but no one receives his testimony. ³³ However, the person who has received his testimony has set to his seal that God is true. ³⁴ For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God. For God does not give the Spirit by measure (to him). ³⁵ The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. ³⁶ The person who believes on the Son has everlasting life, and the person who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

The loving conversation of Christ with the woman from Samaria by the well’s side. How he heals the ruler’s son.

4 As soon as the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard how Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John ² (though Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples), ³ he left Judea and went back to Galilee. ⁴ And it so was that he had to go through Samaria. ⁵ Then he came to a village of Samaria called Sychar, near the parcel of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. ⁶ And there was Jacob’s well.

Jesus, then wearied in his journey, sat on the well. And it was about the sixth hour, ⁷ and there came a woman of Samaria to draw water. And Jesus said to her, Give me to drink. ⁸ For his disciples had gone away to the town to buy food. ⁹ Then the woman of Samaria said to him, How is it that you, being a Jew, ask drink of me, a Samaritan? (For the Jews will have nothing to do with the Samaritans.)

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that says to you, Give me to drink, you would have asked of him, and he would have given you the water of life.

¹¹ The woman said to him, Sir, you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where then do you have that water of life from? ¹² Are you greater than our father Jacob who gave us the well, and he himself drank from it, and his children and his animals?

¹³ Jesus answered and said to her, Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again. ¹⁴ But whoever drinks of the water that I give him shall never more thirst, but the water that I give him will be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

¹⁵ The woman said to him, Sir, give me of that water so that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw. ¹⁶ Jesus said to her, Go and call your husband, and come here. ¹⁷ The woman answered and said to him, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have well said, I have no husband. ¹⁸ For you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband. This you have said truly.

¹⁹ The woman said to him, Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. ²⁰ Our fathers worshipped in this mountain, but you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.

²¹ Jesus said to her, Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. ²² You Samaritans worship you know not what. We know what we worship, for salvation comes of the Jews. ²³ But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth. For indeed, the Father seeks such to worship him. ²⁴ God is a spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and truth.

²⁵ The woman said to him, I know well the Messiah will come, who is called Christ. When he is come, he will tell us all things.

²⁶ Jesus said to her, I who speak to you am he.

²⁷ And at that point his disciples came, and were surprised that he talked with the woman. Yet no one said to him, What are you asking? or, Why are you talking with her? ²⁸ The woman then left her water-pot, and went her way into the village and said to the people, ²⁹ Come see a man who told me all that I ever did. Is he not the Christ? ³⁰ Then they went out of the village and came to him.

³¹ And in the meanwhile his disciples urged him, saying, Rabbi, eat! ³² He said to them, I have food to eat that you know not of. ³³ Then the disciples said between themselves, Has anyone brought him food?

³⁴ Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to finish his work. ³⁵ Do you not say, There are yet four months and then comes the harvest? Behold, I say to you: lift up your eyes and look on the fields, for they are already white for harvest. ³⁶ And he who reaps receives reward, and gathers fruit unto life eternal, so that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. ³⁷ And this saying is true, that one sows and another reaps. ³⁸ I sent you to reap that whereon you bestowed no labour. Other men laboured, and you have entered into their labours.

³⁹ Many of the Samaritans of that village believed on him because of the word of the woman who testified, He told me all that I ever did. ⁴⁰ Then when the Samaritans had come to him, they besought him to stay with them. And he stayed there two days. ⁴¹ And many more believed because of his own words, ⁴² and said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of what you said, but because we have heard him ourselves and know that this is even indeed Christ, the Saviour of the world.

⁴³ After two days he departed from there and went away into Galilee. ⁴⁴ And Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honour in his own country. ⁴⁵ Then, as soon as he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast. For they had also gone to the feast day.

⁴⁶ And Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. ⁴⁷ As soon as he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to him and besought him to come down and heal his son, for he was even ready to die. ⁴⁸ Then Jesus said to him, Unless you see signs and wonders, you cannot believe. ⁴⁹ The nobleman said to him, Sir, come away before my child dies! ⁵⁰ Jesus said to him, Go your way, your son lives.

And the man believed the words that Jesus had spoken to him, and went his way. ⁵¹ And as he was going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, Your child lives. ⁵² Then he enquired of them the hour when the child began to recover. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. ⁵³ And the father knew that it was the same hour in which Jesus had said to him, Your son lives. And he believed, and all his household. ⁵⁴ This is again the second miracle that Jesus did after he had come out of Judea into Galilee.

He heals the man who had been sick for 38 years. The Jews accuse him. He answers for himself and reproves them.

5 After that there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. ² And there is at Jerusalem, by the slaughterhouse, a pool called in the Hebrew tongue Bethseda, having five porches, ³ in which lay a great number of sick folk, of the blind, lame, and paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. ⁴ For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water. Whoever then first after the stirring of the water stepped in, was made whole of whatever disease he had.

⁵ And a certain man was there who had been diseased 38 years. ⁶ When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that for a long time now he had been diseased, he said to him, Do you want to be made whole? ⁷ The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up. But in the meantime, when I am about to come, another steps down before me. ⁸ And Jesus said to him, Rise, take up your bed, and walk. ⁹ And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed and walked.

And that day was the Sabbath day. ¹⁰ The Jews therefore said to him who had been healed, It is the Sabbath day; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed. ¹¹ He answered them, The man who made me whole said to me, Take up your bed and walk. ¹² Then they asked him, What man is it that said to you, Take up your bed and walk? ¹³ But the man that was healed did not know who it was. For Jesus had gotten himself away, because there was a press of people in the place.

¹⁴ And after that, Jesus found the man in the temple and said to him, Behold, you are made whole. Sin no more, lest a worse thing happen to you. ¹⁵ The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole. ¹⁶ And therefore the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought means to slay him, because he had done these things on the Sabbath day.

¹⁷ And Jesus told them, My Father works until now, and I work.

¹⁸ Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill him, not only because he had broken the Sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, and made himself equal with God.

¹⁹ Then Jesus said to them, Truly truly I say to you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but that which he sees the Father do. For whatsoever he does, that the Son does also. ²⁰ For the Father loves the Son and shows him all things, whatever he himself does. And he will show him greater works than these, because you should marvel. ²¹ For likewise as the Father raises up the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he will. ²² Neither does the Father judge any man, but has committed all judgment to the Son, ²³ because all should honour the Son fully as they honour the Father. He who does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who has sent him. ²⁴ Truly truly I say to you, he who hears my words and believes on him who sent me, has everlasting life, and shall not come into damnation, but is escaped from death to life.

²⁵ Truly truly I say to you, the time shall come, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God. And those who hear will live. ²⁶ For as the Father has life in himself, so likewise has he given to the Son to have life in himself, ²⁷ and has given him power also to judge, in that he is the Son of man. ²⁸ Do not be surprised at this. And the hour shall come in which all who are in the graves will hear his voice, ²⁹ and will come forth – those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of damnation.

³⁰ I can of my own self do nothing at all. As I hear, I judge. And my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father who has sent me.

³¹ If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. ³² There is another who bears witness of me, and I know that the witness he bears of me is true: ³³ you sent to John, and he bore witness to the truth. ³⁴ But I do not need the testimony of man. Nevertheless, I say these things so that you might be saved. ³⁵ He was a burning and a shining light, and you were willing for a season to enjoy his light.

³⁶ But I have greater witness than the witness of John. For the works which the Father has given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father sent me.

³⁷ And the Father himself who has sent me bears witness of me. You have not heard his voice at any time, nor have you seen his nature, ³⁸ and his words you do not have abiding in you. For whom he has sent, him you do not believe.

³⁹ Search the scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life, and it is they that testify of me. ⁴⁰ And yet you will not come to me so that you might have life. ⁴¹ I do not need praise from men, ⁴² but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. ⁴³ I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, him you will receive. ⁴⁴ How can you believe, who receive honour from one another, and do not seek the honour that comes from God only?

⁴⁵ Do not think that I will accuse you to my Father. There is one who accuses you: even Moses, in whom you trust. ⁴⁶ For had you believed Moses, you would have believed me. For he wrote of me. ⁴⁷ But seeing you do not believe his writing, how will you believe my words?
